I really like the joinery involved in ship wheels so I decided to make one to hang in the workshop. I'm really not the best woodturner and the wood was far from ideal but even with those challenges I think it came out well.

Will this wheel be connected to your large gears?
From where I am sitting. it looks pretty dam beautiful.
Your little mistake on the front turned into an awesome detail
Great job. Thanks for sharing. 👍
It´s beautifull! Please please also show how you make the brass work! Been a big fan since years now. Don´t even now how I found your chanell, but I love it :-) Please continue :-) Greetings from Germany; Saarland. ruben
That's one great project! And your wobbly router resulted in a nice feature with the lighter wood strips.
Hi Neil. I originally subscribed because of the scrap wood challenge videos. I stayed because I like your other videos as well. I particularly like how you always include the hiccups and how you figure out the workarounds to get to where you want to be in the end.
Same thing, I stayed because interesting content 👍
Same
Glad to see I'm not alone - the scrapwood challenge is awesome and shows what you can make with wood that otherwise would end up in the garbage. One reason I've stayed with this channel.
Same. I love the entire idea of Scrapwood Challenge. I've even walked around the house mumbling the song to myself 😂
@@OriginalRaveParty Oh great! Now I can't get that jingle out of my head.
Yes! I want to see you finish it with all the brass. Gone to far to not see it to the end.
I'll get to it as soon as I get the chance. I've been working on an epic project with two very good friends since finishing the wheel. I need to get that one finished first. :)
Me too.
me too!
Mr. Paskin I believe this mean you need to build the rest of the boat! Beautiful work sir.
... the rest of the boat, out of scrap wood.
That would be epic but maybe a little too epic! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
@@PaskMakes It doesn't have to be a galleon, we would be happy with a decent sized sloop 🙂
@@PaskMakes Just make a very small boat with this giant wheel on it, you'd be the talk of the seven seas!
@@PaskMakes nono, don't let that stop you :D go for it :)
Most definitely NOT a waste of time! I missed the scrap wood challenge. Glad it’s back. I find myself singing the song every once in a while. 😄 Thanks so much for all you do.
I think I'll always make more scrapwood challenge videos, when I get a decent idea for them. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great video, yes would love to see the brass work!! What a way to start a Sunday morning!!
Monday for Neil…
Thanks very much David - Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Art is never, ever a waste of time, but one of the reasons to live for. Spectacular work, specially you fixing your "mistakes". Thanks!!
Thanks very much - Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Scrapwood Challenge is one of the things that got me hooked on your channel years ago @PaskMakes ! Always happy to see these projects and how you solve problems. Thanks for all your hard work in entertaining us armchair woodworkers!
Glad you enjoy the projects - I'll definitely make more scrapwood challenges when I get the ideas for them. :)
Making a ships wheel for no reason is no bigger waste of time than sitting on my couch and Watching someone build a ships wheel for no reason! This is awesome! As always, great work, Pask!
Yes! Definitely want to see the mounting, hub, etc! Very, very nice!
Thanks very much Dale! :)
Art is never wasted time, neither for the producer nor for the consumer. And this was a great piece of art, as always. I was really impressed that you made a virtue out of necessity with the bright rings.
Hear hear.
Well said.
Thanks very much! It was never a waste of time for me but always curious to hear what others think. :)
@@PaskMakes Just like the propeller, I'll bet many people would love to have one in their mancave, and self made too makes it an heirloom piece. Don't worry about the slightly crappy wood on the back - I've seen on the insides of several Thomas Chippendale pieces and you'd be amazed at the reality of furniture making in those days - all the "good stuff" was on the visual side and the carcasses had often quite ropey wood and joints, no-one ever looked at the inside and back :) You're in the very best of company.
Love the ending the most. We indeed are the captain's of our shops.
Glad you enjoyed that! :)
I was Captain of the Head once. 😮
36:11 I just knew you couldn't resist, I couldn't have, either. Rudder port 20! 🤣 Honestly this is a beautiful project and never a waste of time. I'd love to see the completed build with the brass hardware!
Something so beautiful could never be considered a waste of time!
Congratulations!
Not to mention the joinery practice.
Thanks very much Damian - Glad you enjoyed it! :)
"And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by"! Beautiful job, Pask! Thanks for taking us along! Looking forward to the Brass.
Thanks very much Marty! :)
Just about every TH-camr is all about the fastest easiest way of doing a thing man you couldn’t be more different. The amount of effort you put into each project is astounding.
Most of them never actually make anything. Their channels exist to “review” tools they don’t know how to use. The other slightly less obnoxious variant is the never ending shop organization channels where project after project are 3D printed to organize tools that never make anything but doodads for further organization. This guy and a few others are actually really talented and interesting.
The channel "epic upcycling" does the same too. Huge Effort, no BS.
He does make almost all Projects out of Palletwood and occasionally other Dumpsterstuff, and he doesn't even talk on his Videos!
Can recommend :)
i wish the people designing furniture from the factory i bought my couch from spent even 1% of the attention to detail that you do or even just watched your videos. (every piece of my couch is made with really sharp 90 degree angle that are a just a sarcastic joy to lean on). as bad as this couch is, it was the best i could find at the time ;(
Glad you enjoy the projects Steve! :)
One of the many things I love about your videos is that you _always_ wear protective gear, like masks, eye protection, and hearing protection. This really stands out compared to other woodworking channels. Thank you for being such a positive inspiration and a great role model.
Beautiful build , anything you enjoy is never a waste of time
Thanks Jason - there wasn't any doubt that I enjoyed it but wondered how others felt about it. :)
The look on my wife's face as she heard the intro, i think we were both transported back to covid lockdown where she was subjected to the entire back catalogue of scrapwood challenge videos back to back, days on end.
For me, it felt good to be back, up the scrap wood i say! Thank you Neil, a nice little memory for us both.
A real stunner this is, Neil. Definitely, film the making the brass pieces. This must be as hard as working with wenge!
How could doing something you love ever be called a waste of time? It’s a work of art and id be proud to display it ❤
There is so much precise joinery in this! Really well executed!
I believe that I have watched every one of your videos. Not a single one has been a waste of time for either of you or me. In the medieval times of Europe, you would have been the King's craftsman. Your work is amazing, and if I can borrow an Australian term... Good on you! I hope I got that right because you deserve it.
Super cool! Absolutely not a waste of time. I love that you chose it for the joinery.❤😊
The joinery really interested me and I was super keen to give it a go. :)
have been following you for several years and I keep thinking how great it would be to have a mentor like you. Because of you, I built a small workshop for myself during my roof renovation and started woodworking. The workshop is not finished yet, but I am eagerly looking forward to copying your methods. Wishing you a long life, TH-cam mentor. ☺️
Yes to the brass joinery and wall mount video!!
The wheel is outstanding. Absolutely NOT a waste of time. looking forward to the next episode. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Definitely worthwhile. It's art, and has unique joinery aspects to it, so you're learning and improving skills at the same time.
I totally agree with all of your reasons! :)
No project is waisting time, as you are challenging your skill set.
The wheel turned out beautiful.
You are a great artisan, and I’m sure you find great pleasure in all your projects. It sure pleasures us to watch.
The Scrapwood Challenge is my favorite type of video on your channel and the main reason I subscribed all those years ago so it's great to see a new one.
Thank you! :)
It's a pleasure to watching you, It's never ever wasting time It is really deserved your work even you don't have ship. It's enough to put it on the wall in your living room to be proudly of this peic of work.
What a wonderful project. Just last week, I was wondering when we’d see a new scrapwood challenge. I was wearing my scrapwood challenge t-shirt in my shop, when a student came to me and exclaimed how much she enjoyed watching your videos. Keep on it, and cheers from California!
That's awesome Ron - thanks for sharing it with me, made my day! :)
31:45 there are no mistakes, only happy accidents. The fix made it even better. Congrats, you are a very good craftsman.
It’s been years since we had a scrap wood challenge. I hope this means you’re bringing them back.
I have made a couple over the last couple years. I'll still make more as I get a decent idea for one. :)
That was definitely not a waste of time, I really like the way you treat every piece of wood with respect. There's no such thing as scrap they're just waiting for someone to make them art. I'd love to see you finish it with the brass.
Until next time, thank you.
Pask, you are FEARLESS.
Well done.
Nice job Mr Paskin. The original ships wheel was a work of art. Most captains of years gone by were quite proud of their ships wheel. The traditional ships wheel was made to be dismantled for cleaning. My old Dad had done a couple in his day. The wood had to be well seasoned and all cuts accurate as there wasn't much room for shrinkage etc. Some of the really old wheels were quite creaky with a lot of movement from wear with the wood being compressed. The bronze center hub had the spokes tennoned into it. I suggest you Put a clock in the centre of yours. Cheers and G'day from Tasmania.
Beautiful piece! Hard to believe that came from the scrap pile. Glad to see you're back to building components for your steam powered airship Neil!
Gotta steer the thing somehow 👍
#1. Art is NEVER a waste of time..
#2. How many times one of my mistakes turned out to be cool design element....
#3. Keep up the Scrapwood challenges, they are the best!
Whooo. Another scrapwood challenge!
100 percent worthwhile. And thoroughly enjoyable too. Your problem solving skills are as epic as the builds, and an excellent learning experience. Thank you.
Not only does it look great, but you have made it from wood that otherwise would have been left for the fire and had and value. You continue to amaze me with your abilities and ideas, please keep this up as I look forward to your next installment.
Thanks John! It was very good wood but leaving it outside wasn't the best for it and deteriorated pretty badly. At least I saved some of it and made something from it. :)
Nothing is a waste of time if you enjoy what you’re doing. I’ve been watching for years and lately I see you enjoying yourself more and dedicating your time to something that makes you happy. I love it!
Yay, scrap wood challenge is back! The original is what brought me to the channel, I love watching the problem solving. Definitely film the finishing touches I for sure want to see that!
Projects like this are what I call sanity projects. It is beautiful, a work of art. The personal satisfaction is immeasurable. Thank you, Les.
Yes please film it!! I loved this project, it came out beautifully!! Please keep them coming!!
I definitely do not think it was a waste of time! I really enjoy watching you create stuff like this from scrap wood and I also enjoy watching you figure out how to fix a mistake or work around an issue that pops up. Great work!
Outstanding as always Neil 😊! Never a waste of time, these are classic skill-builder projects that greatly benefit other makers who watch your videos, and as you’re always saying, you always learn so much too.
+1 on being terrified of larger router bits in powerful router tables. I’m an experienced maker, I know what I’m doing, but occasional catches are inevitable and very scary.
Belt grinder with template-following jog is already very high on my wish list 👍🏻, it’s clearly much safer.
Thanks very much and glad you like the belt grinder method. :)
This is a real "Scrapwood Challenge". A beautiful object created from some very unpromising raw material. As your intro says "but some of the wood is good" - and it was certainly good enough - when put together with skill. It certainly ticked the box of "well worth watching" and, for you, I think it ticks the box of developing your already awesome skill set. Keep them coming!
Neil, art piece or not, nothing you make is a waste of time. You are easily my favorite youtube woodworker/maker. Your skills and patience are incredible. You are truly gifted.
A Pirate walks into a bar with a ship wheel on his belt, bartender says "HEY BUDDY! you know youse gots a Wheel on your belt?! Pirate says, "Yaaarrr, its drivin' me nuts."
🐑🥁🐍
"I'm no Turner" he says. Then knocks out a bunch of stunning spokes!
Glad to see another scrapwood challenge dude.
Definitely show the trims going together. Thanks for another seriously good video!
I appreciate your craft, even when it is just for a wall hanging piece, it is good enough to be used in real life! Many captains in the past would literally kill for a wheel of such fine craftsmanship. Most TH-camrs are in it for the views you are in it for the craft. I appreciate you and all you stand for! Thank you.
It's never a waste of time just to make something you like, it's exercising your skills. Nicely done!
"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking."
Good job and I want to see the bass go on!!
A GORGEOUS 'waste of time'! The kind of time you only regret if you DON'T waste it on projects like this!! I'd like to see both the final result and how you do it. I love watching you work and some of the unique things you think up are epic, just like this one.
The mark of a real artist: Make your mistakes look intentional 🙂
This was definitely a worthwhile project. You challenged yourself, learned some new techniques, and turned poor quality materials into a beautiful decoration. Well done!
You crafted beautifully this wheel, your attention to detail is impressive, with smooth curves and a polished finish that bring out its nautical charm. It’s a timeless piece that captures the spirit of the sea, blending craftsmanship and elegance perfectly. thank you for this video, you're a true artist
Never a waste of time. An inspiration to other budding woodworkers and an interesting build which might help us tackle similar projects. Thanks.
This is a fantastic video! Challenging oneself is never a waste of time. I greatly appreciate that you shared the whole process. The joinery, round over process, and assembly techniques are something that I can apply to many projects. Making interesting items from wood that most people would throw away is pure joy for me. I've enjoyed all your videos!
Not a waste of time. It's wonderful. Looks amazing. You have a lot of confidence in yourself to take on a project like this. It's wild.
I just got to the finished product. Unbelievable. The right choice on the finishing. That wood looks beautiful.
If it brings you joy, and harms no-one, it's never a waste of time. It was fascinating to see the process, but the bit I loved the most was how you dealt with the hiccup. Adjusting a glitch into a feature is a brilliant way to deal with it. :D Looking forward to seeing it with the brass on.
I love this series so much 😊
Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. Nothing one does is a waste of time, especially when it comes to your projects. This was a wonderful journey you brought us on so thank you. Keeping to custom joinery used to make these items, and your methodology behind it all, leaves something to be desired. This put in mind of the propeller project. Awesome. I would like to see the brass finishing, thanks. Keep inspiring us to step beyond our perceived limits.
Nice save with the veneer inset on the ring - well done. So good, it looks intentional!
If life's a competition, and the goal is to develop as much skill as possible: Definitely not a waste of time. Not to mention the entertainment factor.
There is no way its the same scrapwood. The scrapwood was straight, that wheel is round...
Great job.... man has the patience I will never have.
This is a fantastic build. I don't think it was a waste of time because anything you enjoy in life is never a waste of time. I wish I was as talented as you are. I love the wheel and I am sure there would even be a market for them. great job and fun to watch you building it. I would like to see this finished.
These kind of projects are never a waste of time, you get joy from the process and the end result and that's all the reason you need. 👍
I always have made extra projects like these my whole life with no practical use whatsoever and they have never been a waste of time in my opinion. Projects such as these honed my skills and helped develope problem solving abilities that came in handy for projects I did for paying customers! I love all your videos and am jealous of your talents! Keep up the good work
Thank you so much for your amazing work! I have been following your work since the very beginning of your youtube channel and it is still my absolute favourite by a mile. I love how calmly and accurately you describe your work process -- without the silly stories, jokes and music and whatever else one finds on other youtube channels. It's been an amazing journey. I am always waiting in great anticipation for the next video. Thank you for doing what you are doing. Dominic
I once was told that every craftsman makes mistakes. What differs the good ones from the mediocre ones is how well you can hide them.
Beautiful work as usual. Thank you for chairing
The best kind of mistake: when the repair is more beautiful than the design! I love the look of that inlay around the front. Great build and wonderful to see another scrap wood challenge. Thanks!
This looks awesome Neil! I love how such a beautiful item can be crafted from not only reclaimed wood, but reclaimed wood that most people would have just assumed they wasted to rot. I'd definitely love to see you do the hardware to it. Thank you for another great scrapwood challenge!
I’ve been following you for years and absolutely love your builds and videos. You have inspired me in more ways than you know!!! Thank you!! The wheel? Great idea! Nothing you do is a waste of time!
Love it. Dont care if it has no use, it showcases your skills as a builder/maker. Nicely done.
I think I speak for everyone when I say "We absolutely want to see the rest of this build"
I live vids like this (your propeller build is in the same category) because I would love to build random stuff like this just for fun. While tools, materials, and skills can be acquired and developed, I lack the discipline and focus for suck a task - we're I to start, it would get forgotten about halfway through.
Your videos allow me to vicariously live out that dream instead. I might not have built these things, but I feel better about our world knowing someone has, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to see it happen.
So please keep it up.
This project was certainly not a waste of time. My Australian mother had a Norwegian father who was a ship's carpenter. At one point, we had a lamp with a miniature ships' wheel very similar to this. I sat watching this video thinking about the grandfather I never knew. According to my mother, he made that for her. You helped me recognise his skills with great appreciation for your demonstration. Thank you for bringing a precious memory to life for me. PS, please show us the brasswork as well.
Great video and a truly awesome project.
I'd love to see how you'll finish it with the brass details as well.
I often say that if you have fun or enjoy doing something it can not be a waste of time.
Some people don't see the meaning in making something that has no practical use, while some of us love to see the artistry behind the making of such beautiful objects. 🤩
What a brilliant project. Yes put it on your wall for all to see, you are very good at what you do and you should be proud to show it.
Thank you, Neil, for introducing us to these truly original and amazing projects. You won't find this anywhere else on TH-cam. Your craftsmanship is at an incredible level!
Excellent project, and I really do enjoy how you show the screw ups along with the work. So many makers on youtube pretend they are perfect and edit that stuff out. That's a shame because those are the parts that really teach us things right?
I'd love to see a video of this project being finished out completely.
Thanks again for another awesome project. Your videos really help be disconnect from reality for a bit, a well needed mental rest.
You can never consider anything a waste of time when you love what your doing!! Excellent job Brother!!
Another epic project. I love how the “mistake” lead to a solution that made the wheel even better. It’s awesome to make something just because you want to. And yes, show the hardware video too please. Amazing piece of wall art all from scrap wood.
Hey Neil! I grew up watching your videos and you’ve been a huge inspiration to me in the world of woodworking. Last year I started going to school for wooden sailboat restoration. This video felt perfect targeted to me, and I appreciate it.
Any time you create something so beautiful there is no way it is a waste of time. Well done!😊
Ah yes, just some old scrap wood that I turned into a stunning ship's wheel! Wow, it looks amazing. Yes, I would very much like to see it with all the brass fittings etc. I really appreciate that you show us the errors and then how you made it look even better because of them, thanks for sharing with us.
I'm really fascinated with old wooden ships, watching you make this piece is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.. thank you so much for sharing!
Absolutely worthwhile project in your capable hands Neil, you made a thing of beauty from material that would've rotted away without your trademark careful attention. Magnificent as always!
Up until watching this there has been no point in my life where I had thought I needed to build a ships wheel… bravo Mr. P.!
I have heard it said that the mark of a good carpenter is how well he covers his mistakes. You do great work!
What a great project! I think building something beautiful just because you want to is the essence of being an artist/woodworker. Your projects are so diverse I truly look forward to all your content. The little ‘hiccup’ you fixed with the filler strip was not only clever but appealing as well. Thank you so much for your efforts to share your talents, it is much appreciated.
Hi Neil,
thanks for the great video. What a beautiful project again.
Waste of time? Absolutely not. You had a great time building it. Isn't that what it's all about? Plus the end result is gorgeous.
Which can be sad for most of your projects. You just like to go the extra mile to make something special although it's not necessary for functionality.
That's why I appreciate you as a maker.
I wish you all the best. Keep up the great work.
And yes please make another video about finishing it. I'd love to see it.
Beautiful job Neil
Well done mate, as usual, the error became the nicest design point on the build. I am guilty of silently enjoying your work while I comment on all the smaller makers I watch... not sure why, I suppose I figure you don't need 1,282 (current) comments, but that is doing a disservice I intend to rectify. I finally got to meet Corin who visited my shop the other week, what a lovely fella. He even fixed my block plane for me. These personal builds for fun are what really matters, keep them coming.
Your honesty is both brutal and refreshing….”its looks like theres plenty of wood, but most of it really is bad quality”.
…..but keeps right on sawing and planing 🤣🤣🤣
That looks great! I really enjoy your wood working videos, when the pieces are for fun, like this and the propellers and gears!
No such thing as a waste of time when it comes to a project such as this. At very minimum, you learned something, and so did we!
If you learned something, or had fun doing it, or both, it's absolutely not a waste of your time. That looks amazing Sir.
Artistry is never a waste of time. This is surely something to be proud of!
Doesn’t matter what we think of the project. You make great content and obviously enjoy sharing your projects with the community. Great work and meticulous as always. Keep it up!
