    I just made my second batch of this soap and I know why your husband wanted it so much! I have NEVER used ANY dish soap that cleans everything and cuts grease like this does - so fast and easily! I was shocked. The first time I washed my glasses, they were actually squeaking as I rinsed them. Seriously...SQUEAKY CLEAN!!! I tried grated soap in one batch, but I have a tip that you may have come across since making this vid years ago. I used a dual lye solution in both batches - which gets you to a thickish trace in about 5 minutes! My ratio is approximately 4 to 1 (80%/20%) of Potassium Hydroxide to Sodium Hydroxide - keeping the water amount the same. I used 5.5oz KOH and 1.5oz NaOH. I hope this will help someone. I'm thrilled with your recipe...thank you so very much!

    You can use borax, sure but it will thicken the soap so that it will require further diluting making a less concentrated soap. Half an ounce of cold process soap shavings is totally worth it to cut out 30 mins or so of stirring and it will also save the life of your mixer. I use the dish soap for cleaning a lot more than dishes! It's my all-purpose kitchen and bathroom cleaner. Does't really do glass but cleans everything else nicely.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience. Just made this recipe using the glycerin method and adding castor oil. Yielded a lovely soap that I can use as a handsoap by the kitchen sink, scented with lemongrass essential oil--just amazing. Thank you!

    Bonnie - your tip to add soap shavings is awesome and it makes sense: glycerin (i.e. the "glycerin method") speeds trace in liquid soap and since regular soap contains glycerin as a by-product, it makes sense that it would help trace. I've now made five batches of liquid soap: one batch castile, three batches coconut/lard for laundry soap/mechanic hand soap and one batch shampoo base. For each I added just a bit of shaved coconut oil CP soap. I've never had to wait more than 5-10 min for trace. Works awesome!!!!! I (and my stick blender) thank you :).

      @@lisal8887 true castile is only olive oil, but you could use all lard. You won't end up with clear soap though. I"ve made an all beef tallow liquid soap and it was pearlescent and lovely.

    Newbie soap maker here. Thank you so much for sharing this detailed video. I just made it yesterday, and it went about the same as you showed. I had my crockpot on the warm setting, and that seemed to work well. But at the end I wonder if I should have cooked it a little longer, even though it seemed pretty clear in the test water. After diluting (and neutralizing), the soap doesn't seem as clear as yours. I also added more water to dilute it more, as it seemed pretty thick. It still has a nice thick consistency. My husband really likes it. It's great for handwashing as well as dishes. Thank you again, and I'd love any further tips you may have to share with us.

    Thank you for sharing this recipe. I made it last night, works great. it turned out thick even though I added more water than the recipe called for. I tried it in the shower, was really good. citric acid is very hard to find, probably try lemon juice or vinegar to keep costs down. the smell is amazing with nothing added. This will make a great birthday gifts for the coming year. I appreciate the recipes you share.

    That is interesting. I recommend Distilled Water. You can try and switch to boric acid. I sometimes use that in liquid soaps, too. Mine always turns out cloudy but it is from the essential oils I add, especially since I use citrus oils. Before that, it's always pretty clear but my bubbles up a lot. If you have hard water, some washing soda might help, too, also called soda ash.

    Hello Bonnie....I plan to try to make this liquid dishwashing soap as soon as I get back home. We are at our daughter's house for a week or two, dog sitting till she returns home from work trip. I make a few of your other things like liquid laundry soap & dishwasher TABS! They both work out GREAT! So, thank you for them. I am so looking forward to making this healthy liquid dishwashing soap because we presently use Dawn & Palmolive Dishwashing Soap. Stay tune...😛

    My lather doesn't last long either. Yes, I used all of mine even though it separated. It worked great right up to the last drop. I made it again and it is starting to separate. It is warm enough here now (and I added more water to make it a little thinner this time) that I can shake it enough to mix back together.

    Thanks for such a helpful comment! The price will vary depending on where you get supplies and cost. This recipe really makes a LOT of concentrated soap, too. You really could add a lot more water but I like mine super concentrated. My husband says I should market this for carpet cleaner, too. He steams the carpet with my dish soap!

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you hit the vaseline stage but it doesn't dilute clear than it could be that you have unsaponified oil in the soap which clouds it. You could try taking a PH test and adding more lye to adjust in order to make it clear. However, that is not necessary. The soap doesn't have to be clear to work. Cloudy will also work, it just means that you could use a little more lye next time.

    Yes, I usually let it cool down before adding the EOs but some will start vaporizing due to low flash points. I blend lemongrass with lemon for this reason but some lemon must remain because I can smell it in there. The lemon has more of a lemon fruit smell. I can smell the lemon seed type note that lemongrass doesn't have. Once it's cooled whatever is left remains kind of "locked in".

    I buy essential oils in bulk so my Lemongrass costs considerably less. I have to make my own because I am allergic to sulfates and cannot handle detergents regularly. But yes, it's real essential oil. This recipe yields a lot of soap that is ultra concentrated. A lot of people feel that even more water should be used to dilute it. I prefer mine very concentrated. If you consider how thin and watered down the bottles in the store are, there is a huge money savings & it's natural/organic.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @MyWoodenBucket It should clean up your greasy things just fine without the citrus. It's because of the structure of the molecule. One side attaches to water and the other attaches to the grease and it washes away. This dish soap works better for me than any store brand I have tried.

  • @judydolash8832

    Hi, I made this soap the other day and followed the same directions except for the soap shavings. I had a couple of problems: For the dilution step, I mixed the citric acid the 30 oz of hot water as shown in the formula. It took so long for the paste to dissolve, that it needed more water for dilution. I kept it in the slow cooker on low. When it finally dissolved and was finished, it would not suds up well in the sink, and leaves a milky color in the water.

    Yes, perfectly safe. I had a septic for years. It's not oil any more after you're done with it. The lye and oils break down into their chemical components and reorganize into soap and glycerin molecules.

    This soap rocks! Following your video made the process easy. I know it is meant for dishes but I have been experimenting with it. It is very versatile; Better than Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap It is so much more concentrated. It tests at a PH of 7, so I don’t have to worry about it being too harsh on my skin. I have very sensitive reactive skin but decided to try using it as a body wash. So far it doesn't make me itch or break out and it gets the job done! I’m tickled pink! Thank you for this video

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @snowballzt The grated soap is optional. You do not need it at all. I do not know if Ivory would work. I do not know it's chemical composition. You need to use a superfatted soap. This recipe is meant for advanced soap makers. I recommend making cold process bar soap before attempting making a potassium soap. And, if you make some bar soap you'll have some to shred down to make this with. No Vegetable Glycerine is a different kind of soap. It must be one made with oils.

  • @GoodEarthSpa

    This one bubbles like crazy. Coconut bubbles fast but doesn't last! :-)
    But, I was actually TRYING to get a low suds dish soap at first... for the dishwasher. But it ended up being super bubbly. My kids use it for bubble baths. I use it to clean my dishes, kitchen, floors, permanent marker and remove adhesives. This stuff works great for me.

    I have made this soap twice now and I love it. The first time it started separating into 2 layers after about 2 months. There was a small amber colored layer on the bottom of the creamy white soap (I use lavender & tea tree EO). Do you ever have problems with any of your liquid soaps separating after a couple of months or so? I was told it was because I didn't discount the lye 25%.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @valbakke No, it's not necessary in a hot process soap. You can let it cool or add it hot, whichever you prefer.

  • @TJ-if9vm

    I made this recipe with some variations. I didn't have the octagon soap I used castile. I didn't have soy oil so I used safflower oil just to see what happened. I got the same results as everyone else. It did seperate with a more liquid appearance at the bottom but I just shake it before use. Got a good lather but didn't last long but it seems to have done a pretty good job on my dishes. .

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you blended it with a blender and it got milky-looking after it was clear then it could be tiny bubbles all through. When they settle, it becomes clear again.

    Wow I just made this liquid dish soap and it's not clear it's so thick like honey even kind of the color of honey, or as someone else mentioned like butterscotch syrup. It's really really concentrated. A little drop will do ya! Amazing dish soap. This was my first attempt and I'm not sure it's suppose to be this thick but honestly I like it because it will last me a very long time. Question? Can I dilute it if needed and how do I dilute it? Thanks for sharing amazing video Bonnie!!!!

    @valbakke I get my organic soybean oil from Soaper's Choice. You can check them out. If you swap out another oil, it must be a liquid oil with the same SAP value (unless you want to recalculate the lye). You could get away with swapping Peach Kernel, Peanut or Safflower (not high oleic) in this recipe. Diluting may require more or less water.

    @valbakke KOH soaps are just different when it comes to diluting and there is no calculator that I know of that will calculate this right. It's trial and error, depending on the ingredients you use. It can be anywhere from 1/2 soap to 1/5th soap. It just depends. Wish I could help more, it's just complex and every recipe needs to be tested. That is just diluting water. Stay on the lower end for lye-mixing water. You'll have to cook it longer if you add more.

  • @valbakke
    @valbakke 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry for all the questions, you have been very helpful. What is best way to figure out the amount of water needed for diluting soap paste? Also what lye calc would you recommend? I have gotten large differences when trying to figure lye and water amounts for a 100% coconut oil soap. One said 19 oz of water and the other ( soapcalc) said 9 oz.
    Thanks so much!

    @valbakke If it is too thick you can add more water until it is at the desired consistency. You could double or triple the water in this recipe with good results. Mine is thick also. I like mine just thin enough to be able to pump it in the bottle but you might like yours thinner. I figured my citric acid by trial and error with PH testing strips. You should not need to add any more citric acid than the recipe calls for.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it's normal. This is really concentrated liquid soap and you'll get that film on top because the soap coagulates. You can add more water, making a thinner consistency and this will solve the problem. As for me, I like it concentrated so I just deal with having a thick surface from time to time.

    @EdentialFarms...I did the test with the phenophthalein and it did NOT turn pink so that means it was neutralized. Didn't do the zap test I just can't see me putting this soap in my mouth to test it for a bite. But it does not hurt my hands when I use it. I still use it for washing the pots and stuff. It will lather great on a sponge but only a slight bit in the running water then the water goes cloudy and the bubbles go away in about 30 seconds. I am at a loss.

    @Mrssoapmistress I'm not sure. When I make mine it's great. It is thick but it bubbles and cleans off practically anything. It's my general household cleaner! Its still white/milky but that is o.k. All that matters to me is that it cleans and it does have a rich lather. It is super-concentrated and I noticed when I added more water to water it down it was the color in your video. Thank you for the resource. Next on my list is your laundry soap. Although I was wondering could this be used for laundry as well? Thanks.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, that is a good sign. I did formulate this to be a low-suds recipe but mine ended up being very bubbly. I wonder if there is a difference between the organic soybean and regular. I know they are now genetically different since the non-organic soy has been altered. From personal experience, I tend to observe and believe that organic soy oil produces more glycerin, which could mean there is more glycerol in the fatty acids but I never looked up the molecular structures to compare them.

    In checking for full saponification, even a superfatted or not-fully-reacted mixture should fully dissolve in water as the soap should have no issue emulsifying a few percent of unreacted fats.

    Great demo. I'd like to try this recipe to cut back on CO. I'm assuming I could also use borax to nuetralize. No citric acid. Oh, thanx for the tip on adding the shredded soap, I like the shortcut, but I'd hate to waste glycerine on dish soap ;)

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @valbakke I do set mine to high but more important than temperature is whether or not the soap went from creamy to translucent. When it is translucent that is when you know all the fatty acids have been neutralized by the lye and your soap is fully saponified. Does/did your soap look see-through or cloudy (before adding FO or EO)? If cloudy, it needs more cooking. If see-through (or just a tiny bit cloudy) then its finished.

    @Grimmnir65 Bummer! It's really odd that it is not bubbling. The cloudiness is odd, too. For the cloudiness, that would normally indicate that the oils did not fully saponify but you tested it, so it is strange. You can substitute out some of your water for alcohol to enhance the clarity but the fact that it doesn't bubble worries me. Have you done a PH test at all? Mine is about the bubbliest stuff I have around here. My kids use it for bubble bath.

  • @MyWoodenBucket
    @MyWoodenBucket 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @EdentiaFarms Yes I used KOH. I'm thinking now maybe I just didn't measure right because that was almost all day making the soap cooking on high. Then after adding water and citric acid and it didn't bubble anymore I let it cook all night. Pretty much all the water cooked out of it and the constancy is like butterscotch syrup. I'm not really that disappointed, it was fun and a first. I will try again. Thanks Bonnie.

    @soapmaking2011 But for the lathering, I'm not sure. Mine lathers so much we sometimes use it for bubble bath for the kids. :)

    You can sub out for grapeseed oil. They have the same SAP value and similar properties.

    Sometimes small bubbles make it look milky. The blender can cause this and if that is the case just cook it longer to let bubbles settle.

    Kind of the same as the paste you can buy. A Castile Paste should be made with 100% Olive Oil. But yes, you can make your own paste. I have a few jars of paste around for when I need liquid soap immediately.

    @soapmaking2011 It sounds like, since it was not clear, you might need more cooking time before diluting. It will still clean just fine like it is but next time try cooking it longer. Yes, this does make a very thick and concentrated soap. In colder weather it may solidify some or run thicker. You can dilute it more if you want to.

    Bonnie, I made this soap and thought it was fully cooked but it really is still cloudy. Should I be putting it back in the crock pot to heat it and cook it some more. Not really sure how long it should cook - mine really looked like taffy (it cooked for over 4 hours). Should I cook it on high heat or leave it on minimum. Thanks for video, it was inspiring!

    Hello I would like to make this soap but wonder about the soap shavings. Can I use shavings from my homemade soap bars. These bars do have essentials oils etc...in them will that work. If I want to use glycerine instead would this also work and when would I add it? Thank you

    I was wondering why superfat only to neuturalize? Does a dish soap or laundry soap clean as well if using a 0% superfat? Thanks for all your wonderful videoes.

    @MyWoodenBucket Hm, sounds like it did not fully saponify. You are using KOH and not NaOH, right? Several hours should have been long enough but cloudiness is the way you tell if it's fully saponifed or not. You could put it back in a cook it some more but with adding the water it might take forever to cook it out.

    Hi, is this safe for use in organic gardening vegetables and on our body? And could I use Pork fat instead of oil, due to allergies I have to avoid coconut and soybean oil? Thank you for sharing

    Hi Bonnie--very grateful for all your expertise and enthusiam! New soap maker here: can I use any hard soap as my shredded sodium soap that you added to your KOH water? I am trying to be as low-budget as poosible. Mahalo!

      samuel coble I use 1oz of my homemade soap shredded, per 30oz of oils added to crock pot after the oils have been heated and I've added my KOH, it helps come to trace faster. Hope this helps.

      Yes, Samuel. I have no concerns due to the fact that I've made the soap myself-I know what is in it.

    Just made this. Followed process exactly. My soap did not come out as clear as Bonnie's, but it was clear when tested. Not sure what I might have done wrong. But I have lots of bubbles..

    Try using a little more water then. The water evaporates as you cook so you might need to start with a little extra.

    When I made this soap, I guess I should have used a larger container for my soapy water. When I added the lye, it bubbled up and over the lip of my container. It didn't spill much, so I used it like it was. It went to trace very quickly, 5 minutes or less. Everything else seemed to work just as you describe. At the end, it was a little cloudy, which I somewhat expected since I was shorter on lye than I should have been, but I tested the PH of it and it was perfect. The soap was super bubbly in the pot, but overnight the bubbles moved to the top and the soap was clear underneath. It DID turn a little cloudy once I added the essential oils though. The soap itself works great, though the bubbles in the water fizzle out very quickly. Do you think it would make a difference if I were to just let the soap paste kind of melt into the water rather than use my stick blender on it?
    Also, I've made shampoo bars using your recipe and love them. If I were to use the same ingredients that I use to make hard shampoo bars and just substitute KOH, would I then get liquid shampoo that works as well as my hard shampoo bars. I've noticed that most people use alcohol and are extra careful to be sterile when them make a liquid shampoo. Why is it not that important with this liquid soap?
    Sorry for this super long post. And thanks for all the wonderful videos you post! I could watch them all day long!

    Thank you so much for uploading this great video. Do you have any suggestion for soy bean oil substitution? Just in case someone doesn't want to use anything soy? Also I may have missed it but do you put it in the slow cooker immediately after you mix the lye solution with oils? How long was it in the slow cooker? Do you check the pH?

    Ok.. thanks. I always cook my HP on low. My crock only has a low and high. Seems it always gets to a temp of 170 when I put it on low. Its a smaller crock. I will try it on low then and see how it goes. Thanks again :)

    I assume the crockpot is used to cook at a low controlled temperature. If that is the case, could the cooking also be done in an oven which has very precise temperature control? And if so, what temperature should the oven be set at? Thanks!

    I just made a batch for the first time and it too has seperated as well. It does however seem to work well, the lather didn't last long as I see from reading the other posts is normal. I was wondering if you used all of yours even though it had seperated? I thought maybe I had used a bit too much essential oil at the end?

    love this, could you use just coconut oil to avoid GMO soybean oil. I can't buy organic soy oil here. Would sunflower oil work in it's place.
