    THANK YOU!!! For your time and kindness of showing folks how to make their very own, Natural shampoo bars. I am a Soap Maker and appreciate the kindness and patience of others posting their videos. You are better than I am as I could NOT take some of the comments and nonsense that some people post as I would lash out. You have made a beautiful, hair loving bar. Yes, cost effective as they last long and are not full of the chemical nasties that most people are so numb to in their daily routine of commercial products. People need to educate themselves on the crap they are slathering themselves in for vain sake.

      And some need to educate themselves on what is healthy for hair vs what is healthy for skin. Believe it or not there is a wealth of knowledge out there from cosmetic chemists that explain very easily why the pH of soap is NOT healthy for hair.

    Hello Bonnie!! I received my order from you today. The Shampoo Bar for oily hair looks and smells amazing; I could smell the essential oils the moment I opened the package. The Rose Hydrosol is lovely; I spritzed a light mist on my face for the healing properties of rose and it is beautiful and light. Thank you for the sample of Yum Yum Dum Dum Lollipop Soap. A 3.8 ounce of sample soap is quite generous. And my son will absolutely love the frog. What a pleasure!! You made my day.

    This video and recipe couldn't have come at a better time.
    I made some shampoo soap a while back that works great for my husband's short thin hair. For my long and thick hair, it was horrendous. It left my hair a little greasy feeling and was difficult to rinse out even with a peppermint vinegar and water rinse.
    Thanks so much, Bonnie! I'm sure your recipe will fare better for me!

    Thanks, I just wanted to say about the water that we have well water and it is naturally recycled here. We are on a self sustainable system so it's not wasting water. I understand most people are hooked up to the city water but I let it run at the end because I was doing a PH test and holding the camera at the same time and my hands were all soapy as I was fumbling around. I also wanted you guys to be able to see all those bubbles.

    I've used Tea Tree Oil on my hair as well as many clients for varying issues. I use Tea Tree Oil in shampoos to cleanse the scalp of impurities, excess build up but also for itchy or dry scalp. What I love about it is it soothes the scalp without drying it. You could probably try adding .5oz to an ounce into a shampoo recipe, but make sure to run in through a soap calculator to even the recipe back out. Great video! The lather is fantastic looking, I cannot wait to try this. :)

    My shampoos got wiped out recently. I'm making more today but they won't be ready for some weeks. I make a hair and scalp cream salve that I use for myself. When my hair is long I use it on the tips but it's shorter now so I melt it into my fingers and rub it in my scalp and roots. I don't sell the hair salve. I make it with almond oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, aloe, vitamin e, lavender and clary sage eos. Shea is a little too greasy for my hair but I love it for my skin.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That depends on your hair type and specific hair issues. I do not need a separate conditioner but I occasionally do oil treatments. When I had chlorine in my water, I needed a conditioner all the time no matter what I used. Our hair and our water is so different from one person to the next. We kind of have to find our own perfect routine that gives us the results we want.

    Yes! All of these ingredients are commonly used for ethnic hair types and I've had lots of positive response from people with ethnic hair. That being said, we are all unique and different so it may work better for some over others. Even though I have white normal hair type, I've grown up using many ethnic hair shampoos growing up because my step-mom was a black woman and I grew up in a mixed cultural family. This shampoo has great moisturizing oils which I need for my dry scalp issues.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ibislee Yes, it is because castor has solvent like properties that wash away the oils more cleanly. It's hard to get a good shampoo without using castor, especially if you have longer hair. Shorter hair people can often use any bar of soap.

  • @Skaldi3
    @Skaldi3 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jeff Roy, the shelf life would be roughly 4 years plus the expiration date on the products you used to make it. Glycol which is actually what you are making is a preservative in itself. However, it can have mold and other issues develop so store it in a cool, dry place.

    Your videos are just great. You have a wonderful voice for doing this, and I thank you so much for sharing your recipes and knowledge about soap making.. I have made some HP soap, and bought from other shops, then I tried shampoo bars, and for about a year now, have used nothing else, but... store bought conditioner on my super fine, very curly hair. Now, I just have to try your shampoo bars, and make my own. This is just so much fun, and is so incredibly addictive. I love it!!!!

    @valbakke No, I do not always CPOP soaps. Only for quick curing or loaves made to order, etc. Usually not in my regular soaps. You can shave off the tops and do another lather PH test or taste test and see how that goes.

    I sometimes use hydrosols in soap making and they are usually fine. Once or twice I have noticed things did not come out right and that was from using a fir hydrosol. You can give it a try. They are distilled but will contain some water soluble scented particles from the plant. But, you generally can't smell the hydrosol in the final soap so it might not be worth it. I'm currently experimenting in using 2X, 3X etc strength hydrosols in soap making.

    Thanks for the tutorial. I just made it yesterday and mine seems a little too soft. It is getting harder by the hour, hope, hope. I live 1000yds from the ocean & have had other products be difficult. Should I have waited longer to remove the mold? One of the corners was mushy. It is also going through gel phase.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lovethyscent Try washing with the lather and not rubbing the bar on your head. This will prevent too much soap from getting into your hair. This bar washes out very easily and cleanly. Liquid shampoo is about 1/4 soap or detergent with 3/4 water and thickeners. Shampoo bars use less plastic and last about 4 times longer than watered down liquid shampoos.

    I must have said fragrance and meant EO. I've never purchased or used tea tree fragrance. I used Australian tea tree essential oil. In this shampoo video I think I did lavender EO blended with other FOs. But yes, I only use tea tree distilled essential oil, not fragrance. Glad to clear this up. Sometimes I think one thing and say another. I don't always catch it... like the time I said frosting and meant fragrance when describing chocolate LOL.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you perform a PH test and the soap is mild, then you don't really need any cure time at all to safely use the shampoo. However, if you let the shampoo bar fully cure, it will be harder and longer lasting.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ibislee Yes, castor rinses out of the hair much better. This recipe is more for dry hair. You could play around with the oils and lye or add clay to adjust for specific hair types.

    You could try to make it into liquid that way but usually with making any type of liquid soap we would use Potassium Hydroxide as our alkali instead of Sodium Hydroxide as it dissolves better. But the calculations would change. For dry scalp, avoid palm oil. Almond, Rice Bran, Avocado or Shea butter may help.

    Hi, you said in the video it has a PH of 8. Isn't that a bit alkaline for the acidic human hair? Would it lead to a ph swing especially if you adding acidic products after the shampoo. I love the video though. Its very similar to how we make bar of soap in West Africa which are sold very cheaply in the markets. Thanks.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I also cannot use sulfates and this is a good alternative. This lather you will find is much more gentle than sulfates. Sulfates are super harsh. No bueno!

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Distilled water is used in soap-making because other waters contain impurities that will bond with the sodium hydroxide instead of your oils. This leaves extra oils in the soap that you were not planning for. For example, minerals may react with the sodium hydroxide before it ever touches the oils and will cause your solution to be weaker than desired.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    @mukwah1111 as for oils for thinning hair... essential oils tea tree, lavender and cedarwood are all great for cleaning follicles which would help prevent thinning due to blocked follicles. You can swap any of those for the scenting oils.

  • @GoodEarthSpa
    @GoodEarthSpa  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @valbakke If it zaps in the soap tasting test after a week, that is not good. It's most likely because you used less oil than the recipe called for. You can shred it and rebatch in a crockpot, add in the jojoba oil that you forgot, remold and it should be fine. If you shampoo did not gel, then let it sit a few days longer. It may need more time.

    Glycerin is completely water soluble. You are probably more likely having an oil residue from shampoo bars on your hair, perhaps from too much superfatting. The reason I use so much castor is because of it's oil soluble qualities. I use jojoba oil since it is the closest to our natural sebum. I never have a problem with my shampoo bars rinsing out. I have had that problem with other handmade shampoo bars. It might be okay for some, but you may require a higher castor formulation.

  • @GoodEarthSpa

    I made this recipe, I did forget to add the jojoba oil. I put mine into silicone cupcake molds. I made them over a week ago and I am finding the tops to have what I thought was ash, is zapping when I give it the tongue zap test. The bottom of the bar does not zap. Have you ever had this happen? I have found some say the soap could have sweated? How long do you let your lye mixture cool before mixing with oils? I don't take temps and haven't had a problem.

    When Sodium and Chlorine combine they are no longer what they were. They instead turn into something new, table salt. We need it to live but either of it's components separately could do us harm. Soap is a salt made with oils and lye. The oils and lye combine chemically to make something totally new, soap! The lye is completely used up in the reaction and soapmakers use extra oils to leave your skin feeling nice. Glycerin is also made simultaneously while making soap.

    Just as with soap, the shampoo needs to be cured until it is a PH of 8-10 before it is considered safe to use. This is often mild enough the very next day but I also give it a few weeks to cure out moisture.

I was wondering if this shampoo bar would be ok on supers sensitive skin, I can only use about 1/4 of the shampoos on the market without my scalp scabbing up so I kinda want to try something like this , for all I know its all the extra nasty stuff they put in my skin has a problem with.

    Question. If I don't use any essential oils should I add some extra Jojoba Oil to ensure the ph isn't too alkaline? For example instead of 1.5oz of scenting oils would I need to neutralise with an extra 1.5oz of Jojoba Oil?

    The water discount describes how much water is mixed into your lye. I like to think of it in ratios. For example 1 to 1 would be 50% lye and 50% water. 2:1 water:lye would be 33.3% lye and 66.7% water. 3:1 would be 25% lye and 75% water and so on depending on how much lye and water you use. Most soap makers are using a 20% to 40% lye solution. Note the higher your percent of lye the stronger the solution is. You would want a stronger lye solution to reduce cure time. A weaker to do fluid swirls.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! I bought two types of shampoo from you for oily hair and for normal hair. I loved both of them! I am going to try and make them myself. I couldn't find a tutorial for making a shampoo for oily hair. Did you use 35% of castor oil in that one? Can you tell me how much coconut and palm oils you used? I would very much appreciate if you advised me on this. Also, is gel stage absolutely necessary?

    Why do you have to put LYE in the soap? I would think that would be to harsh on the hair and skin. Just wondering?

    Really great video! I would love to try this but I had a question(for us newbies). What is a PH test for? Is there a "bad" ph test outcome?

    Beautiful demonstration and very good explanation of the ingredients! Do you think that is possible using murumuru butter instead of jojoba oil? Thank you very much!

    I see that you have a few different types of shampoo bars. What type of hair is this one best for? And is there some sort of conditioner as well? Thanks!

    Do you know of an oil that aids with dry scalp like a conventional dandruff shampoo would? Also could this bar be melted and diluted with water to make a liquid shampoo?

    @EdentiaFarms Thanks, So far I haven't had any problems using it. What lye calc do you use? I will look into more info on the castor oil. The highest amount of castor is 10% and it is a nice bubbly bar.
