I use 1/4 cup per load. I also add vinegar to the rinse cycle for softness. Works amazing! This soap cost approx $5 to make which averages out to $.37 per load of laundry. IMO, it works just as well as commercial brands without any harsh chemicals. Four days for laundry.... that is insane!
You could substitute olive oil for the coconut oil... smaller amount of bubbles. But be sure to run your recipe through the soap calculator. Because we neutralized it, you could use this for hand soap but it may be a bit on the drying side.
I am a tester. lol :) The transparent soap is fun. A great way to add embeds to cp soap without have to worry about the m+p melting during the gel phase.
Yay.. I love this video. I can try to make this because my family can't use detergents on the market. I buy from a crafter for my laundry detergent and now I can make my own. Thank you. Can't wait for the next video
Interesting to see the soap go from opaque to translucent. I'm basically pretty darned lazy and selfish with my off hours, but the idea of being able to add my own fragrance and use a product with controlled ingredients is really appealing. This was a great tutorial, CB - not just in the making of the soap, but in the testing as well. Looking forward to transparent soap next week! xxMMM
Thanks so much !!! Vinegar is good for the machine too ! LOVE your vids ... they are super teaching and really really outstanding PLUS BONUS - lots of fun with other viewers having a go at each other and friendly funnier than heck comments eh !!!
Oh, we are so fortunate for what we have, that's for sure. Your sister used a wringer washer and had young kids....Bless her! I thought I was complicating life by using cloth diapers when mine were young. I've been without my phone all weekend and realized what an addiction it is for me - always checking, looking things up, hitting Facebook - it's been a relaxing weekend without it, actually. We're so spoiled by technology and conveniences, aren't we? ~Suzy
Yes I will give this one a try, excellent tutorial, thank you. Pity about the loud 'ticking noise' in the room it was a bit distracting, do you think it might be mice? Rene x
I LOVE your channel and you :p...Thanks for all the great tips and videos..Ive been soaping for about 6 months now and I have been using your videos as my guides. Thanks so much, keep the vids coming PLEASE!!
since the soap suds more would it be OK for an HE washer? or is there a way to get the suds down and still have the cleaning ability? would this be too harsh for hand soap? thank you :)
Thank you for the interesting and informative video. I'm going to adapt this for hand soap. If you wanted to add an exfoliant, like poppy seed or ground walnut shells, would you add that at the stage where you said to add the fragrance? Also, what was the pH of your final product? Many thanks!
You say you are adding citric at 1%. Is that 1% of the weight of your paste or 1% of the oils in your recipe? Also, were you adding powdered citric, or did you have it diluted in water?
soaping101 -- thanks for all your great vids!--my question is...if you got carried away and overmixed your soap, and even though it didn't get to the volcano stage, it got solid far faster (within 30 minutes), and then was cooked but still seemed a bit like some oils weren't fully saponified...and then was neutralized (with borax)...and it separates when cool..is it salvagable? I know I didn't do it right, but is my soap wasted and should i just start over? Thanks!
I personally think it's a fabulous idea....let's get the mouse!! Yeah, overslept a bit today being a holiday and all, but eventually made it to class. There weren't any seats in your area, so I just grabbed one in back and was happy to not have to hold the wall up. :-D
My grandmother used a wringer dryer (replaced the washer with a "contemporary" one) until she moved into a retirement home in the 80's. I thought THAT was time intensive, My husband irons his shirts (says it's relaxing) which is just fine with me. I don't mind doing laundry, but don't care to iron. 4 days...yeow!
@George McNair ...thanks for the tip! I will try the borax, if I don't find citric acid. the only thing is I am sure I won't use it for skin. But I am afraid my other users will so I'll take the borax. thank you again.
Hi breezy! Just think ~ those women couldn't just zap a microwave dinner or zip out to Mc'D's to grab fast food for her family either. She still had to cook from scratch over a wood fire that was a job in itself. My older sister used a wringer washer when her kids were young ~ she swore by it...said the automatics didnt clean properly HEE Fill it at the laundry tubs with scalding water....sheets, whites, towels first then gradually darker colours...wring into rinse water, then on& on phew
Great tut teach ! What volume of this soap is used per load? Is it friendlier than commercial brands? In terms of chemical makeup? I saw a show on TV - Victorian Farm & it took the lady of the house 4 days to do the laundry - wash, dry, starch, iron. Imagine that ? Thanks for another great vid !!!
Hi Linda, Phil ran out of his posh packaging and has had to resort to sending his soap out wrapped in duck tape. He had a roll left and brought it to class this week. Somewhere among these comments Teach mentioned that she wants us all to bring our sneakers and shorts next week because she has been imagining the whole class together physically exercising. Should be fun, that and watching Phil apologise to the class with his little hairy legs on show, hey bring your tweezers he,he,. Luv Rene x
Hi Suzy, didn't think you would hear it you were so far back in class. I mentioned it to a friend and he has given me a couple of mouse traps (they are deadly) to take to next class with an offer of a huge 'Rat Trap' (he tells me it's a killer!) what do you think? Luv Rene x
Like ants at a picnic, we have our first uninvited guest! Class, please help me in welcoming our new disliker as I know you only you all can. xx, The Teach
Great tutorial, as always! I've seen videos and read recipes that use Borax rather than the citric acid to neutralize the soap. Are there advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other?
Yes I will be I suppose, I fell back in the corner where there was a big spiders web and it got all over my hair. Some of it got in my eye and when I tried to back up and get out of it the spider landed on my nose. I flicked it off and now it is in my shoe but I can't turn around and bend over at the same time the closet is too small. So I kicked off my shoe and can't find it. The soap molds went everywhere and my shoe is in that pile. Phil wait till I get my hands on you GRRRR.
The offender is now in detention, his stars have been taken away + he will have to stand before the class with a formal apology to you in order to get them back. I am very sorry his happened to you... I have such a hard time controlling that rascal!
That project better not be for my package, I want fancy ribbon not duck tape!! If I find Monty I will take him home to play with my kittens! I can't believe that you were soooo mean to Linda - paying for it now though eh deeeeeeeeetention!!!! he,he,he, LOL and fall over backwards!!
Hey, Hi Hater, what is your problem? Tell me! Don't be nasty, life is too short, come and join us you are missing all the fun... honest, aww come on, you know you want to really, just don't wear a Micky Mouse Watch or hog all the Gold Stars. Luv, Rene x
Shocking behavior....just shocking. I came late today (I do have a note excusing me...in case you were wondering). Did you loosen the tape yourself? Did someone find you in the closet?
Yes you did, we got rid of all the duct tape in class and you smuggled more in. Shameful Phil. As far as the mouse if anyone find it, we will hold it hostage from Phil.
This is turning out to be the best youtube soaping channel for newbies and the soap-challenged. Thank you so much!!

Borax is also a great alternative for neutralizing the soap. I use citric acid because it is just what I prefer.
Yes, distilled water is used for this type of soap. The coconut oil I used was 76... the 92 was a typo.

Imagine what it would be like it we were all physically in a classroom together... chaos, pure fun + chaos!

You are an angel sent from Soap heaven. Thank you so much for these tutorials!

Tell Mr Suzy that I have a closet full of relaxation for him!!!!!!!
Yes I will give this one a try, excellent tutorial, thank you. Pity about the loud 'ticking noise' in the room it was a bit distracting, do you think it might be mice? Rene x
Sure, I'll add to our list of videos
3 hours you are lucky mine would take 6! I make the glycerin way now, I couldn't stand the wait lol. Can't wait for transparent soap!
Thanks for making me smile!

looks good, but what do mean mean 1% how much is that in OZ?

Thank you Teach, got it now, thought I had missed something or was just loosing it.
It did make me LOL though, won't forget that one. Luv, Rene x
The same process applies for hand soap just using different oils.
I gotta try this!!! Thank you sooooo much for your videos!
Love watching your tutorials! thanks

It is very easy just takes a bit of time.
Do you mind explaining when you say that you neutralize the soap what does that mean and why? I am new to soaping and I have soap fever.
Could you tell me if I could use lemon juice in place of the citrus acid? Thank You
You can do a double boiler method or cook it in the oven also :)
Thank you so much!! Been looking forward to this one! ~Heather
Great video, very interesting, will certainly give this a try, thanks, xxLinda

*climbs down off chair* I'll help you find him, Phil. "Heeeere Monty...here boy"
Can't wait to make this!

I am here too teach, Phil had me in the closet with the duct tape. But I am here.
:-D It was terribly loud on my end as well, Rene. Nothing worse than a mouse in the house!
*gasps in horror* Are you OKAY??? *shaking head*
A present for me??!! Well then, you are off the hook Phil.
Hello there..I love your videos.
Could you please let me know the recipe for Milk- Honey Soap and also Lavendar Soap?
Naturalization means that you are making the lye neutral and not caustic. There are many ways to do this. I have seen recipes with borax in it.
Yeah, the Mickey Mouse watch is working :)
What would happen if you didn't add the citric acid? Or is there a way to go around the citric acid if I can't find it? Thanks : )
im here for todays Lesson!!!! wooot! *taps pencil*
Like ants at a picnic, we have our first uninvited guest!
Class, please help me in welcoming our new disliker as I know you only you all can.
xx, The Teach
I think she means the class was so full it was "standing room only". Am I right Suzy? This may be an American term.
I don't LOL. I use glycerin for the water to mix with the KOH & it's literally minutes let it sit and it's ready to dilute the next day :)
Great tutorial, as always!
I've seen videos and read recipes that use Borax rather than the citric acid to neutralize the soap. Are there advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other?
i really enjoy the no-talking, but I think you forgot to add the ingredient labels to the video as you were adding them. Thanks for sharing
At 7:45 why does the water from your clarity test look powdery? It looks clear liquid in the jar, but looks like powder in the crock.
Have you ever made salt bars :) Yummo! Could you do a tutorial please :)
Thanks :x
Be careful of the noise... some of the girls are pretty sensitive. They made Phil turn his watch off :)
Please turn your watch on silent. Some of the sisters are being disrupted :)

*jumps up on chair*
What is the shelf-life of this detergent?
The oil chart needs to be added to the facebook site. Please.
This seems allot harder than bar soap...
Perfect... please do so... heheh
He's laughing!! You know that he'd do it for YOU.
should it be distilled water?
That project better not be for my package, I want fancy ribbon not duck tape!! If I find Monty I will take him home to play with my kittens! I can't believe that you were soooo mean to Linda - paying for it now though eh deeeeeeeeetention!!!! he,he,he, LOL and fall over backwards!!
Bad Phil!
Sorry, Rene. The imaginary classroom wall ...the one in the back of the class!
:-D
Your caught now Phil.
That Phil is incorrigible !!
Forgot to mention that I can give you the number for a good pest control company
hahaha ! well said, Rene xx Suzy
You've lost me Suzy - what wall??
Hey, Hi Hater, what is your problem? Tell me! Don't be nasty, life is too short, come and join us you are missing all the fun... honest, aww come on, you know you want to really, just don't wear a Micky Mouse Watch or hog all the Gold Stars.
Luv, Rene x
Shocking behavior....just shocking. I came late today (I do have a note excusing me...in case you were wondering). Did you loosen the tape yourself? Did someone find you in the closet?
I know he is bad. Louise and I thought we got rid of all the duct tape, but he smuggled it into class.
like :)
Yes you did, we got rid of all the duct tape in class and you smuggled more in. Shameful Phil. As far as the mouse if anyone find it, we will hold it hostage from Phil.
poor phil!!!!!!
oh noes!!!!!! how terrible!
