This guy is just so amazing. I literally cannot watch enough footage of him. His answers to questions are so brutally honest, yet he is so polite and almost child-like. I love how he shook hands with the interviewer at the end LOL. He might be my favorite famous person ever.
His reply to his angry dad during the Help Me Rhonda session, "Why?" really resonates.
Damn. He's been through hell. Jim Morrison died. Kurt Cobain died. Elvis died. Brian lived.

You beat me to it and said it better than I could. Not to disparage the other members of the band, but Brian was clearly the creative engine that made them what they were.
Years ago I saw an interview with him. At one point he sat down at a keyboard and played and sang the opening of 'Good Vibrations'. He captured the entire feel of the song all by himself in just a matter of seconds.
paul newman I think it's helped as in others wrote the parts to other instruments. I see how it sounds like a down play of his talent, but I think it's more just a matter of giving some credit where due.

He didn't do all the lyrics, afaik. I'm just reading 'Heroes and Villians.' 'I am Brian Wilson' is next on my reading list. I feel very sad for the man. I have serious doubts his mental illness began with smoking dope. The voices seem to be an externalization of his father's abusiveness.
You have to give credits to the lyricists as well. You can't say that Love, Asher and Parks didn't do anything. Mike Love came up with the hook for i get around also wrote all the lyrics for Cal girls and Good vibrations and thats just some of the thing he has done
How can you not love Brian Wilson. So calm and collected, and one of the best songwriters ever.
Brian was a genius and writing amazing music long before LSD. I guess the drugs expanded his creativity a bit, but he had over 20 #1 hit songs before he even smoked a joint. Thank you Brian for enriching our lives to which you wrote the soundtrack to. God bless you Brian and Love and Mercy always.
I think you mean over 20 hits that made it to the charts. The Beach Boys only had 4 #1 hits
Plus, songs like Warmth of The Sun and In My Room already hint at his future songs and their richness. At this same time, he was fully producing records for Jan & Dean, The Honeys and Glen Campbell that already hit a high level of studio mastery. The influence of the 50's and early 60's were still in effect in 1964 and he was one of the first to break that mold. The Beatles were still doing Mersey Beat sounds that were new but easily traced back to their roots. One guy who broke away early was British producer Joe Meek, the Everly Brothers did some unique things too heading into '65, but there's a scant few that truly broke through. 1965 changed a lot and doesn't get the credit '66 and '67 do. But look at Beach Boys Today! Wowwww.

Why does everyone who interviews him insist on throwing the interview away by asking him the same questions he's been asked a million times? All these people need to do is spend a few minutes on youtube doing a bit of research to find out he's answered these same questions so many times before. Stop focusing on the things that make him sad, since we already know all about it, and ask him about things that get him excited and happy. The interview would likely be much more enjoyable for everyone, and maybe we'd learn something new. I just hate seeing him having to go down the same path every single time he's interviewed. There is so much more to him than the sad parts of his life.
Id be asking him more about composing,producing, the fans, the legacy of The Beach Boys etc rather than 'the drugs'. Id try and make him feel happy as possible.
Agreed. It's like they just want to get their scoop on his drug use and see if he says anything new about it, and he never does. He isn't stupid. He isn't making it up. You heard what he has said in the past so don't deny it!

He is so soft spoken and modest he'd probably reply, "I don't know...I just did my best to have a good voice and put out good music and that's what I want to be remembered for." I think he has even stated he doesn't think he is a "genius" and that he just wrote what he felt and did the best he could.
What you would ask him so?
I have seen a billion interviews in my life of various celebrities, etc. This woman in my humble opinion, handled herself better than any interviewer I have ever seen! She's just so sweet, and knew exactly how to treat Brian in her questions, etc. Bravo!!

This man has been through so much in his life with drugs,parental abuse from Murray and just dealing with the demons from all the effects of the drug use over time.. but yet,he is the most gifted and talented songwriter and producer you have ever seen.not to mention a man with so much love and forgiveness in his heart and being humbled.. will always be a beach boy fan because of this man and his talent.. the world is lucky to have his music to enjoy.. thank you Brian.....
Brian is much-loved in the UK. I've seen him onstage four times, and I don't know how long he can keep doing it, but I'm grateful for all the wonderful music he and the 'Boys' have made over the years.
Me too. Seen him on the 2002 Pet Sounds tour, SMiLE in 2004 and twice on this year's Pet Sounds tour. A remarkable man and musician.

He most certainly would need to hear that. He is the type of person, mostly because of his mental illness, that needs to hear good things said *to his face* about him, he's a vulnerable soul, who craves affection.

I must respectfully disagree with your self-appraisal, Mr. Wilson. Millions upon millions of people have taken psychedelics. Only one person took psychedelics then wrote "Good Vibrations."
Actually I think you make a very good point. The drugs might have helped HIM specifically to write those songs or tap into certain creative energies but that’s only because of his brilliant mind in the first place.

Brian Wilson is so congenial and polite to everyone. He is about as much a regular nice guy that you could have but with this unbelievably incredible talent.
Whomever this gal is, she did a calming and respectful interview. Also, looked like Mr. Wilson took a bit of a shine towards her. :)

Brian said it right at the end: he'll most be remembered for inspiring vocal harmonies, which was the genius that lay under his songwriting since he was trying to create new ways for those to rise out of the music.

This is one of the best interviews with Brian in ages. I think it might be because the interviewer seems really interested in Brian and asks interesting questions about the drugs no one has really asked him before
Who doesn’t love Brian Wilson? No one. Anyone who knows about him, loves the guy. Genius; America’s modern era composer.
In the film Love and Mercy his character says "I have been hearing voices since 1963" which would predate his introduction to psychedelic drugs. I'm not doubting the man, just an anomaly.
Anthony Monaghan from what I can tell, he was hearing voices (but not voices that said things, more like sounds, he once said he heard screams in his sleep, along with literal music during the day) as early as 1963, and then when he did the LSD the voices became more clear and he was able to make out what they were saying
_Love & Mercy_ has numerous inaccuracies or outright lies. Kind of to be expected with a film biopic, but it's still annoying. Don't take it as gospel.

@@StatusQuonald he suffers from bi-polar disorder, brought on by paranoid-schizophrenia, which manifests as auditory hallucinations. The poor guy has been suffering *most* of his life.
I need to hug Brian so bad. It would help us both.
Psychedelics didn't give me voices but I did get crazier sure. I have less depression now actually. Just a personal anecdote.

I love Brian & of course he will be remembered for his harmony . Saw him in 1978 or maybe it was 79 in Philly. My friend & I loved to party as much as the next person , being in our early 20's. But we had a sip of what was left in the back of the limo. Tasted like iced tea. BUT LORD have Mercy, 1 sip & we were tripping out of our minds. Don't know how Brian was able to do that concert , but he did. He kept getting on top of the piano & his mates kept getting him down like it was part of the act. I too have mental illness so I can relate, however, I DO NOT have the talent of BRIAN WILSON, & neither does ANYONE ELSE. So glad U R still with us Brian. the world loves U. Stay safe !

I was terrified of my dad when I was a kid also Brian. My dad was super tough on me. I live with the memories every day and night. I still have nightmares about my dad to this day. Horrible nightmares. I am now an adult, and even though the memories of my past with him are still very much alive, and will probably haunt me forever, I have come to loved my dad and am also very protective of him. If there are any psychologists out there please explain this to me.
I’m not a psychologist but I think it’s because you are a naturally good person. Nature vs. nurture and nature won.

I think it makes sense for people to feel a strong attachment to the only parent figures they know, or what may have been at a time the only parent figures they knew, even if their parents hurt them badly.
Possibly also you protect him because he's defined your identity, even if that is a complicated one, and you feel you must preserve that to know who you are. Another related reason may be guilt: you protect him to avoid the guilt of defining yourself independently of him. Freud believed guilt is the price of independence. Relatedly still, you may blame yourself for his abusive ways, perhaps especially if guilt was directed at you, which it probably was; in any case, it was likely internalized and thus formed part of your psyche, in which case you must, as in the first point above, defend him to know/preserve yourself; this is why the effects of abuse are so obstinate and often life-long. Hope this may help.

Most of the people's says that the Beatles defined that era in Music, but I think Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys did it,a Genius that did all by Himself and let his Boys sang it,especially when the Great Vibration song came out, he wrote it arranged it all by Himself,love his songs.

He seems like a very genuine and warm person. Interesting what he says about how drugs contribute to creativity. I've heard a lot of professionals like lawyers, surgeons etc take drugs to improve performance.

He made wonderful music BEFORE taking drugs, so I think he is overvaluating drugs.

Kyle Taylor it is genetic. his deceased brothers and his father also had such great hair. probably your father or uncle is bald just like you. stress doesn't cause baldness. brian wilson lived his life in emotional pain, stress. he had several nervous breakdowns but still has a great hair. it is simply genetic.
@@hakancevikel7368 Well, Murry had less hair than Dennis and Brian (Carl inherited Murry's hairline, you can check some photos of Carl in 1988 and afterwards and you can see that Brian had more hair than Carl)
Yeah the Wilson brothers have amazing hair genetics, Murry had a full head of hair too.
That proves that, as Hakan said, stress doesn't cause hair loss, it's all genetic.

I don't know what the reputation of the interviewer is in Canada, but she strikes me as a decent gal. The questions were trite, of course, but she was still polite and classy.

Brian doesn't give his natural ability enough credit. He was writing wonderfully before the drugs. They may have given him a turbo boost for a bit, but he already had the knack.

Whenever i bring up to people that I like the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson they never seem to get it or appreciate what i'm on about, so now i'm just going to keep the relationship I have with this band to myself.

What a shame. I feel so horrible yet happy for him at the same time. Those demons continue to haunt him but yet, he's found a way to fight them off. Well, Mr Wilson, YOU MADE THE BEST HARMONIES I personally have ever heard and I am a huge Beatles fan, who arguably had similar harmonies, BUT, Brian's are far far far better in my humble opinion. I hope he looks back on his life and doesn't carry that feeling that it wasn't worth it. Everything you do in life has a purpose. Unfortunately, his purpose had been tainted with drugs but he was able to touch THE WORLD and that's not something everyone can do.
