He always did. The Bee Gees, David Lee Roth (Van Halen) and even Paul McCartney were some of his biggest fans. Paul often said that Pet Sounds inspired Sargent Pepper. Also Diana Ross & Brian Wilson have so much in common, they both did The T.A.M.I. Show, American Bandstand and Ed Sullivan. Traci was getting into it but her Brother Ross was kind of perplexed. This year also marks a bittersweet time in both of their lives. Brian has a nervous breakdown in 1964, and that same week in a pretaped performance The Supremes make their national tv debut on Ed Sullivan. Now a whole new generation of fans are discovering Ed Sullivan's legacy. He, Dick Clark and Alan Freed did alot for black artists over the years.

There isn't a single musician of any worth who doesn't recognise Brian's extraordinary talent. It doesn't matter who you ask, whether it be mainstream pop, R&B stars or creators of heavy rock; they all place Brian on another level to themselves. Art Garfunkel called him the 'Mozart of Pop' and it's impossible to argue with that term of affection. When you get McCartney, Clapton, Elton John and Ronnie Wood et al all acknowledging Brian's immeasurable skillset in creativity then you have to buckle under the accolades bestowed upon him. It's that simple.

This is very touching, and well deserved!
I am a native coastal southern Californian and I grew up on Beach Boys music; being drawn into the sound and words created by Brian, the Boys and some help from "The Wrecking Crew", as did so many groups.......the sound that both exemplified and influenced aspects of lifestyles.

Brian looks very sad. Not sure exactly why, but I think I know and it's nothing to do with drugs. This man has been through hell most of his life. He has given us so much through his music. If he never wants to perform or make another album, I'm totally fine with that. He's 70 yrs old and he's been at this since he was 20. He's a national treasure, they'll never be another like him, not ever. I just want him to be happy and healthy. We owe him that. God bless you, Wilson brothers. Truly amazing.

I read his expression as shy and not comfortable with that level of praise/being the center of attention. Maybe he just wants to smile and play music with no pressure. He looks like he'd rather be there for the music, and I'm sure to reconnect with old friends, hopefully one on one. I know what it's like to have too much stimulus. It was probably very hard for him to sit through it.

It reminds you of when they performed together on the TAMI Show with the Beach Boys and the Supremes in 1964: two young groups about to change the face of music. I’m forever going to remember a co worker I used to work with recently who lost her hearing gradually, which means that the last time she heard music or any sound was around 2002.
We had a boombox In our department to hear music and she always ask me to play “surfer girl” for her. She would go and place her hand right on top of the boombox to feel the rhythm of the song. It was heartbreaking to me and at the same time I learned to appreciate my senses more than ever thanks to her.

I remember flying home to O.C. one night when planes still gave you earphones - 'In My Room' was playing just as I was flying over Marina del Rey. Landed to find out Dennis had drowned around the time we flew over MDR. Now Carl gone with lung cancer. Brian and the Wrecking Crew were, in our opinion, the greatest talents in existence, still are. My first Beach Boys experience was hearing I Get Around on my sister's pocket transistor radio walking to a neighborhood park to play horseshoes. We lived on 26th St in Terre Haute, IN, and that was my introduction to Rock & Roll. I recall every moment of that short few minutes of time because it was so impressive. Thank you, Brian & the Boys, you are America's Band forever.

Brian's father Murry used to beat him and his brothers within an inch of their lives. Brian had a severe mental breakdown as an adult and couldn't get out of bed or write music for several years. He was then taken over, controlled and abused by his caretaker/therapist Eugene Landy and eventually had to be rescued from him through legal and family intervention. He lives today on an even keel only with the help of numerous and high doses of psychopharmaceutical drugs. On the other hand, he's also one of the most gifted musical composers of this or any time, and leaves other musicians from every generation in total awe of what he creates. Brian has retained that rare sense of childlike wonder and openness that characterized other geniuses like Mozart or Matisse or Einstein or St. Francis of Assisi. He's married to a beautiful woman who loves him deeply and has gladly given her whole life over to his care and safety. He's got a whole new set of children through Melinda , and a whole new generation out there becoming aware of his music, which will be remembered and played long after he and the rest of us are gone. A national treasure. All in all, Brian Wilson is the luckiest unlucky bastard on the planet.

+DivineSimply You can't compare the compositional power of popular music to the classic composers obviously... but still Brian didn't have the musical knoledge of Mozart, Beethoven or any of those classic composers, he was a songwriter mostly and they were masters of composition and had deep knowledge plus genius talent. Brian just have the divine spark of genuine music understanding, that's why a sophisticated pop album like Pet Sounds came out, if He would have started young in a classical music career we don't know what could have happenened, but most probably would be a great classic composer, with that talent + studying.

you are almost perfectly right, it was the abuse too but alot of it was the emotional abuse from his father.
Brian Wilson has Divergent Personality disorder, if his family was supportive he might have been bipolar but his soul was metaphorically drained by his father and then his doctor so people can make him uncomfortable. it doesnt help that his cousin Mike Love was a constant bully and doubter.
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are two sides of the same coin and well although he constantly fought for what he believed in, since the pressure came from the one place you would expect support your family, so he crumbled.
but he build himself back together with his new and true family, there is too much of a stigma toward mental disorders so people are so unclear on what it truly is and people or so opinionated on what they think it is...
