Still love this lesson and it’s where I discovered the genius of Trev. Ironically a year ago I wasn’t ready for this lesson. This week I was and it’s magnificent control. Relaxed and control.
`This is probably one of the 10 best golf instruction videos I have ever seen. The way Trevor lays it out, and the light switch demonstration. The "feel" I have always been told is to wait for it, at the top (keep your back to the target longer). The problem with that, for me, is that while I wait for a moment, after that, I'm going hard with arms/hands, before the left side clears.
@@CogornoGolf thanks! I appreciate how you bring in other instructors from time to time. The way the two of you fed off of each other is very cool. I also liked how each of you said you’re working on your swing. It’s not just us…. 🙌🏻

Outstanding piece of instruction by Trevor and yourself. I had an instructor years ago in Johannesburg, South Africa, who had me imagining hitting a 3 iron 50 yards. It was taking aerial shots at 180..! Thanks, William

More Expanding/Stretching phase is the key. We all seem to put more emphasis on contracting thinking we will increase or accelerate club head speed. Decelerating to 100mph is a great swing thought. Awesome detailed explanation of something Ive been trying to do with my swing over the last year. Thanks
Great tips gents! I've been trying forever to learn how to slow backswing and downswing. Great ideas here! Thanks for helping us duffers get around the course better. Subscribed to both EC and TS channels.
Very good video. What you advocate is one of three keys I focus on. #1 slow backswing. Quite honestly you really can’t go to slow. This also helps you get a good stretch and extension. #2 slow downswing which this video does a good job of explaining. Finally #3. As you are swinging the club, focus on always having the club out in front of you. This goes for the backswing, the strike and the follow through. Just my two cents worth. It’s served me well over the years!
This is a common swing flaw of mine (rushing from the top). Byron Nelson said 'Be leisurely at the top.' It's just something I keep forgetting. Funny enough, I remembered it last night during a practice session and was hammering shots straight and long (vs pull-hooks and the occasional shank). Night and day. Like everything with golf, you need other things to be going right for a swing key to be useful but an easy transition is kind of fundamental to a good swing. Thanks, EC!
Excellent instruction Eric and Trevor. The modification of the box training device works better for me this way, than the original does. A very effective image, for me, is to picture an off switch that I want to push with the right/trail shoulder blade and an on switch that I want to trigger, by turning back the left/lead side oblique.. This feel encourages passive arms that are whipped through impact by the lower body turn.
Golf ain't like baseball insofar as generating the speed at impact. This video has absolutely nailed this fact. A golf club is swung in a pendulum motion with gravity helping you but you have to give it the time to help you, and you can not rush it. You will feel that club pulling the hardest right before impact and it's going to surprise you how high and far that ball goes, and I ain't kidding either.
This, and the previous video, are really insightful and well put together - thanks chaps. Transition and downswing sequencing is something that I'm working on. Until I saw this video, I could rationally explain to others the benefit of slowing down. But despite that, I really struggled to do it myself. My brain on the downswing would ALWAYS tell my body "screw the theory, you don't create speed by going slower. Let's go as quick as we can!!! yeehaw!!!" resulting in my hands/arms rushing my body and getting an inconsistent strike. Your video help reinforces the concept and the drill is really helpful to overcome the natural instinct of doing something that (initially) feels so counter-intuitive. Eric - you're a great educator and you are doing some amazing work. Thank you and keep it up buddy!
Great video lads. I can avoid 'hitting from the top' with my shorter irons but when i've got say a 180 6 iron distance that's when it gets impossibly difficult and it's so easy to revert back to the 'hit from the top swing' So I'd recommend a short iron first and plan to get longer once the technique is mastered.
Very helpful. My body parts often get out of sync or out of order during the downswing and I can’t figure out why. I am definitely going to work on slowing down my arms.
this video clicked for me when i was pushing my daughter on the swing today. Same principle, for maximum speed for minimal effort, don't pull down until the swing is just beyond the rear apex. It's funny how golf makes us forget basic physics that most preschoolers understand. Thanks Eric!
Love this topic. On video, leaving my arms at the top tends to get my right arm angle very narrow on the way down. Aren't we "supposed" to maintain/increase width on the way down?
Thats correct....the right arm needs to straighten on the way down relative to the top...I go through that in detail here... th-cam.com/video/hJ5scchaRPQ/w-d-xo.html Also....keep in mind the "keeping the arms up" is just a FEEL....in reality they WILL for sure be coming down.....we just want to time that correctly with the body motions
@@CogornoGolf Thanks for the follow up and the reference video. Good stuff there. Would you consider the right arm straightening an active/conscious triceps action or more centrifugal force (biproduct of other things happening correctly)?
Jack Nicholas said it this way...To start my down swing I let my arms drop like an old worn in ragedy anne doll. Rather than start the down swing with arm muscles. The guy in the bay in front was pureing every shot , every single shot sounded amazing . I noticed he was not rushed at all and thought why dont you just slow it all down and get some contact as a start point . I literally felt like i was hitting as slow as i could and hey presto my contact returned and the balls were rocketing again . This is the most bizarre and contradictory game ever invented . Really good to get some confirmation , beautifully explained 👍
I definitely speed up the arms when I have a longer, tougher shot--- drive into the wind on a long hole. Nothing good results from that-- I will try it out this weekend
Dude - love the video and wish you continued success in golf. This lesson and the previous one about losing tension in the arms are very helpful. That being said, I hope you're not planning on making a million on the G-box b/c I don't know anyone who would be caught dead strapping that thing on at the range - LOL.
It's called a Gee Whiz box 📦 because it teaches your arms to be lose as a goose for maximum speed without boxing yourself in with forcing it. The arms do NOT generate power, they only transmit it. Think of power lines over head. All that electricity / power going through them but they're relatively quiet. Sure, they may move a little bit under a heavy breeze but they're generally quiet throughout the transmission process, while the long poles they're attached to are anchored to the ground to with stand the forces of nature being transmitted through them. Hope this helps you generate all the power you need with little effort. Thanks
Mind blown. I create a lot of tension to get my right wrist to hold up the pie plate. As soon as the snow clears here in Denver, which has lingered about 6 freaking weeks(no exaggeration as the snow hasn't melted from the driving range in that long), I look forward to testing out these swing thoughts. Thanks.

Side note: I really enjoy listening to Trevor’s voice and how he speaks (I know that sounds crazy. Haha). The way he enunciates his words and the tone of his voice lends itself to a very authoritative speaking style. If I were listening to him in person, I would be like, “Oh shit, this guy really knows what the hell he is talking about. I better pay close attention and soak in every word!” Thanks for having him on your channel.
Great points about how Trevor is thoughtful about the words he uses, and cadence he speaks them. Great instructor. As I think about it, his verbal delivery is very relaxed, smooth...
No matter who Eric has on (all great guests) he takes a turn swinging to implement the mechanics. His swing is already perfect so hard to see before/after.
I agree with the feel of a smooth, slow start to the ds but the reality is that most top pros quickly reach maximum hand speed of about 25mph (not 30) before P6 then the hands decelerate as the club accelerates. Wilco Nienaber gets to 28.5 mph, maybe Bryson and long drive guys get to 30.
So I am grasping it as on the backswing, it goes hands, shoulders, hips, and then on the downswing, hips, shoulders, hands. EDIT: I hit a 100% pure shot after watching this video. I hit good but now with my hips going first in the swing its so different and effortless! wow!
Thinking "Effortless power" vs "powerless effort". How often do we watch someone make an effortless looking swing that sends the ball flying. We've also experienced the feeling ourselves (usually with the 'wow I hardly swung at that'). Good ideas on body part speeds. Trying to focus on body rotation with quiet/connected arms in transition.
This is a lot like the Gravity Golf swing, which I used to love and probably need to get back to. You'd probably like a lot about it. The best part is the smooth rhythm and letting "gravity do the work."
@@ericdumont610 I agree, but also Paul Wilson's "powerless arms" and Milo Lines. There are differences but the intent is to stop trying to "hit at" the ball, turn off the arms and let the body drag them through the ball. Tom Rezendes also had a video up (a long time ago and not available anymore) where he emphasized never applying force across the target line but always along it. Very good stuff and free! Thank you Eric!
Eric all i have been working on is chin to shoulder separation, i feel like this is the opposite of that. Can you explain to me if i am confused on this or are these two thoughts in the swing completely opposite. I see guys like Maslaska, Bender and others talk about starting with the arms and this video the gentleman appears to have that shoulder and chin glued through rotation which 99/100 pros dont do. Is this just a feel or??
@@CogornoGolf To me it looks like its right at the top of the backswing, which is the opposite of the chin to shoulder and begin rotation i see in the video above. I am attempting to share a link but i cant as it keeps deleting it. Ill share a reel with you on there.
Definitely struggle with the issue, especially first few holes when I tend to be super tense. Curious how grip pressure comes into play here? I feel the tighter i grip, the faster I go.
I like the concept of allowing more rotation by slowing down the arms, but my personal experience resulted in a loss of club head speed and distance. Any thoughts on maintaining club head speed?
Hey! Not really to be honest.....other than turn on the speed more at the bottom with the arm. I would really need to see your swing to say for sure. Can send in to www.cogornogolf.com if you ever want some specific guidance
Hey Dustin! Its really a FEEL vs a REAL thing. You want things to be in "sync" is one way to look at it So each player needs whatever they need relative to where they are currently at This video may help clear up more: th-cam.com/video/CvAN608kqz0/w-d-xo.html
Hello Eric, little confused ,this opposite of what Athletic Motion golf says about the pro golf swing. They said in pro golf swing hand speed reach it's max speed 80 degrees on downswing from there the hands slow down, What is your opinion ? Thanks
When I watch your swing Eric although you are attempting to “let” go in the rotation and swing I see you still having that ingrained swing control. I wonder if your actual grip on the club is a little tight ? Just my observation. I do love this lesson as indeed it amplifies the previous lesson whereby the swing speed is indeed approx 6 times faster than that of the body. As I suffer from swinging too fast I have seen me attempting to get my body out of the way and in due course come over the top resulting in a shot left. Thank you again for this great insight to the golf swing.
@@CogornoGolf It did! Played a very consistent round of golf. A slight variation: I start slowing down the hands as I reach the top on the backswing. Or at least this is what I think. I think you should emphasize this in your teaching, although you probably have. thanks again.
I do this great at the range, but when I golf because of group pressure in front and back of me, I rush and shank on my 8 iron up. Need to follow this badly.
I’m confused, because the guys at Athletic Motion Golf say the opposite. They claim that all their gears data shows pros are accelerating their hands and arms as early as possible. So which is it?
Eric, why do some golf instructors on TY saids if just turn and leave your arms at the top your swing will be out of sync and arms will get stuck behind you.? The more i watch different instructors on TY the more i get confused.
Ever been on a rollercoaster. Where to go when you want to go the fastest down the first biggest hill? It's a rhetorical question. It's the last seats at the back. Where do you want to go to go the slowest? Again, rhetorical. It's the front. So the front goes slow and the very back gathers all the momentum. Think about that when swinging a golf club next time.
I am pretty sure that most people have trouble with these technics because they can't get the legs work properly and with this the hips. Only if you have that basic especially the left leg 95 % correct then you ll be able to improve on other topics.
My biggest gripe about golf videos on youtube is that us hackers aren't going to look anything like this doing this drill. Sure it will help fine tune 2 great swings, but it feels hopeless that I will ever be able to put this into practical use with so many other issues.
@@CogornoGolf how come Porzak golf talks about everything moving together? I don’t understand telling viewers to move your body sooner if your hands need to catch up to reach the “finish line” at the same time.
FEELS vs REALS....key to video you're swing to see where YOU are compared to normal. Not everyone will FEEL the same thing to get to the same end goal....if depends on where they are starting from
While this a great video, they failed to mention that the hands move A LOT FURTHER in the golf swing than the body. So, while the body is moving much slower, it does have to travel near as far. GEARS has proven how Tour Pros increase hand speed FROM THE TOP! Just sayin…
Why am I suddenly reminded of that scene from 'The Running Man' when Jesse -The Body- Ventura comes out in the phony bullshit armor and rips it off while bitching about how it's all a big scam and he just wants to get at his target?
To see much more accurate information on this subject and more, see the Athletic Motion Golf videos on this and many more subjects where they actually measure what is happening with the world’s top golfers. I’m sure Eric is a nice guy but this video is not correct.
Idk Eric. I love your videos you do, but on this one I have to cry foul. After looking at the Pros on gears, their awesome club speed is obtained right from the beginning of the downswing. Their arms are firing. There is no leaving the arms up. Maybe just as a feel a golfer might need this, but otherwise I think this is horrible advice. All the evidence totally contradicts this guy. Some golf instructors want to take away the greatest speed producer we have, which is the hands. Like I said I still love your videos, but this one seems out of bounds, no pun intended.

Hey Salgado!
When you say chin to shoulder separation---tell me what exactly you mean and WHEN you mean it.
@@CogornoGolf To me it looks like its right at the top of the backswing, which is the opposite of the chin to shoulder and begin rotation i see in the video above. I am attempting to share a link but i cant as it keeps deleting it. Ill share a reel with you on there.
Gankas says to leave the hands in a circle at the top of the swing and let the lower body take over.
Agreed---Trevor and George ideas seem very aligned! Great coaches
Definitely struggle with the issue, especially first few holes when I tend to be super tense. Curious how grip pressure comes into play here? I feel the tighter i grip, the faster I go.
Agreed! Thoughts on grip pressure here:
th-cam.com/video/VQ2fVOx6re8/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUaRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIEdyaXAgcHJlc3N1cmU%3D
Trying the "stay" the same pressure as you start is a good key
I like the concept of allowing more rotation by slowing down the arms, but my personal experience resulted in a loss of club head speed and distance. Any thoughts on maintaining club head speed?
Hey!
Not really to be honest.....other than turn on the speed more at the bottom with the arm. I would really need to see your swing to say for sure. Can send in to www.cogornogolf.com if you ever want some specific guidance
such a brilliant video that addresses my personal nightmare ha
Hope it helps! Thank you!
Where did you get the g box with the alignment stick coming out of it? I can only find the g box without the stick!
Hi Eric is this move opposite to what Justin Rose practices in his preshot routine?
Hey Dustin!
Its really a FEEL vs a REAL thing.
You want things to be in "sync" is one way to look at it
So each player needs whatever they need relative to where they are currently at
This video may help clear up more: th-cam.com/video/CvAN608kqz0/w-d-xo.html
That was good!
Thanks!
This is good video!
Thank you James!
Is the belt and box link available?
Hey! The box is from George Gankas if you want to check him out you can see all his products!!
Happen to have a link to "the box" aid?
I believe that is from George Gankas
How did Trevor mod the Gbox to insert the alignment rod? Was it just slid into the cover or into the foam box itself?
I was wondering the same thing.
Does this correlate with early extension in any way?
it does. if you're early extending, the box/stick still won't get out of the way because you're not turning
It does....probably a longer conversation then I can condense into text here
@@CogornoGolf link to that product? didn't see it in the description unless i missed it. thanks!
@@CogornoGolf that's good enough for me! I'm working on more rotation to not extend early. Thanks Eric
Thank Arthur! Not sure on my own swing but hopefully the concepts are helpful!
It’s very good and you having such talented guests helps us all. Have a great weekend 😊
How is the stick/rod connected to Gbox?
Stick to side or just inside through belt loops
this is exactly what ive been struggling with
I think I like this better than trying to pause at the top.
Hope this one helps your game Mike!
Hope this one serves you well!
Is this what other coaches might call 'setting the club' between backswing and downswing?
Yep you could say that
@@CogornoGolf Thanks, it's helpful to have the same thing expressed in different terms, eventually one of them might get through!
Standing with the GBox on is 6x more awkward then normal standing 😁
Great video though. Love the explanation
Lol I hear ya
X factor 💪🏻
Thanks for watching, Matt!
I’m confused, because the guys at Athletic Motion Golf say the opposite. They claim that all their gears data shows pros are accelerating their hands and arms as early as possible. So which is it?
FEELS vs REALS.....
Eric, why do some golf instructors on TY saids if just turn and leave your arms at the top your swing will be out of sync and arms will get stuck behind you.? The more i watch different instructors on TY the more i get confused.
Lol I hear ya...it can definitely be confusing.
Watch this one may clarify: th-cam.com/video/CvAN608kqz0/w-d-xo.html
What if you created an opposing force at the top that restrained the over acceleration of the arms?
As you know....there is certainly more than one way to do it :)
What about a.m.g ? Their research shows that early hand speed is the key😊
REAL vs FEAL :)
@@CogornoGolf quick answer but not instructive.guess u can't explain it
This is a lot like the system Jim Venetos advocates for. Weight forward, stillness & let the club do the work.
👊Thank you for being here with us, Carlo!
Long story short. Let gravity do the real work
👊👊
Well this is good for clean contact and get a reasonable distance. Not sure these can get you 250 yards plus...
Hope this one serves you well!
I am pretty sure that most people have trouble with these technics because they can't get the legs work properly and with this the hips.
Only if you have that basic especially the left leg 95 % correct then you ll be able to improve on other topics.
Thanks for watching the channel my friend! Appreciate you being here with us!!
Start selling the G Box with the attachment for the horse whip and include the horse whip you'll make a fortune.
:)
I’m going to my next Halloween party as a golf instructor with a G Box
😁
My biggest gripe about golf videos on youtube is that us hackers aren't going to look anything like this doing this drill. Sure it will help fine tune 2 great swings, but it feels hopeless that I will ever be able to put this into practical use with so many other issues.
The solution is to get in person lessons I think?
@@avaris1280 my last lesson from a 'pro' destroyed my golf swing and sent me down the rabbit hole I have been in for 2 years trying to find it again.
@@Zack-tn7bk idk what to tell you bro try a different coach or something. I mean if nothing works then nothing works 🤷🏻♂️best of luck
@@avaris1280 all good, I'm frustrated, searching and running out of energy.
Just look up monte scheinblum for different types of drills, might resonate better
I actually have to feel the opposite. My body wins too much. The hands and arms need to move faster to catch up to my body.
Love the awareness of your swing and what YOU need to feel to hit your checkpoints! Appreciate you watching!!
Just sayin…
Thanks for the feedback, Paul! Appreciate you watching!
Conservation of angular momentum.
What you said
Why am I suddenly reminded of that scene from 'The Running Man' when Jesse -The Body- Ventura comes out in the phony bullshit armor and rips it off while bitching about how it's all a big scam and he just wants to get at his target?
I swing the shit out of the golf club. Maximum effort and some guys look like they are barely trying and hit it farther than me.
To see much more accurate information on this subject and more, see the Athletic Motion Golf videos on this and many more subjects where they actually measure what is happening with the world’s top golfers. I’m sure Eric is a nice guy but this video is not correct.
Thanks for your feedback, Ken!
All good---appreciate your input and feedback here.
Of course we have FEELS vs REALS here.
