Hi Eric; I've found that what keeps many people from straightening their arms is too much grip pressure which tightens muscles & won't allow full extension. I'm of the opinion that full relaxation of the body is a big part of the swing. Especially shoulders, arms, wrists & hands that allow the club to swing rather than trying to control the club. Hitting positions is obviously important but if your body isn't relaxed, positions won't make a difference for hitting the middle of the clubface which causes inconsistency & loss of distance. This is something that I believe 99% of teachers don't stress enough, especially to beginners. Too much grip pressure causes tension throughout the whole body which is in my opinion the number 1 swing killer. Be well & keep the videos coming!
I'm a beginner and have a question. Should I be loosening my grip throughout the swing, even at point of contact? Or should I make the grip more firm at point of contact?
Your grip pressure should be the same throughout the swing but the key is keeping the pressure in your last 3 fingers & not to allow your thumbs & forefingers to add pressure. That's what will put tension in your hands & arms & will prevent your arms from swinging freely & be able to straighten. They should only be there for support. I trained myself to do this by making 1armed swings being sure to apply pressure only with the last 3 fingers. I had to squeeze more than I thought I'd have to to be able to control the club so don't grip it too loosely. The more you swing this way, the easier it'll become. Then when you go back to both hands, it'll be easier to hold the grip at the correct pressure. Just be sure to let your arms straighten during the 1 arm swings so you get the feel. I did many many reps before I really felt my fingers gripping enough to control the club so don't expect it to happen too quickly. Be well.
This is the best explanation I’ve ever I’ve ever seen on how to get the proper follow-through. This has already made a huge difference in my swing. Thanks!
This is the best video ever for me. I hit 21 balls this afternoon in my yard 150 yds. Ever shot was toward the pin. Found all my balls around my homemade green. Thanks for the best video on TH-cam. God bless. Subbed you twice.
This is pure gold. I saved this video. I’m so glad that you mentioned right side bend, as well as rotation, and left side extension. I’m able to get the left side extension, and right side bend. However, I need to work on better hip “rotation”, as opposed to hip “slide”. Again…. Great stuff, Eric.
@@CogornoGolf Hey man. I shot 3 over 74(par 71) today at a course I had never played. The greens were lightning fast, and this course had more slope than anywhere I had ever played(greens AND fairways). Straight drives, and clean iron strikes on every hole. I was VERY pleased! This course was insanely difficult. I just missed a few greens in the wrong place, and left myself some side hill, and down hill chips that were impossible to get close. For me anyway…..lol. I only had 2 birdies, because of not leaving myself below the hole. I swear I would have shot 4 under at my home course today. Slope, and speed make a BIGGGG difference. Haha Anyway…. I focused on staying “centered” and not swaying. It kept me much more balanced, and swinging within myself. The results of this paid off, my friend.
This has changed my game for ever. So simple and can be applied to all clubs. Went to the driving range right away and got immediate results and consistency.
As someone that films his swing a lot and sees so much of a benifit from it......when you got into that position of side bend and no extension i was looking at a fitter version of myself. I need the extension in my life and chest up at the sky. Head not flying through the wall. Hero plays with this video
Best video ever Eric. I was having a lot of problems with hitting my 3 wood. Found that if I do a shorter backswing and focus on arms straight(almost a 3/4 swing) I have better results. Still a work in progress.
Eric, this is the best golf video that I have ever seen. I am 70 years old played college golf and still play pretty good, but this is really good stuff. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I'm gonna echo everything everyone else has already said, this is probably the single most helpful video I've ever watched. I struggle with wrist angles and low point control, I've made changes to my wrists and weight shift but none of that mattered without this full extension into the follow through. This is the missing piece. So thank you Eric, if you need any ideas for future videos, I'd love to see you explain how this pairs with low point control. Fat shots have absolutely murdered my rounds in the recent past but the info in the video gives me hope. If I can get rid of the fat shots, I'm 10 strokes better easily, I bet that statement is true for many in these comments as well. Thanks again Eric 👍
Glad to hear this one helped!! I think you'll enjoy checking out this video below in regards to arms straight and low point control: th-cam.com/video/i0Tdk9XYTqg/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
My dear Eric, now I understand it better as for 10 month ago. The short instruction for my brain is: recentering move - shift-turn - crunch - extension - right shoulder down through - chest up - release. Thank you very much again, Erich
This is an excellent video. I am really embracing the concept here. Lots of great tips. Arms straight, chest to the sky, side bend.......all good stuff when tied together. Nice work Eric.
Thanks for sharing the proper arm extension... You are the Best coach on the web for getting instruction through bit by bit with a clear & precise manner. Thanks again Eric .
I may have watched hundreds of instruction videos trying to find solutions to the many inconsistencies of my game. This is by far the most effective description of a core step by step routine to ensure basics are right and have helped me enormously to find confidence and a drill to fall back to when I "lose the swing" in the range or the course. THANK YOU
Eric, this is an awesome video. I've had instructors tell me I need more "rotation" in my swing but I could never quite get the feel of that. I worked on the various elements you discussed, and my ball compression and accuracy have never been more consistent. The video reminds me of the lesson you posted with Sam Gould on the square to square swing. Thanks for sharing these ideas!
Combine this with the wrist hinge video, I watched that and realized doing this without hinge was what was causing shots to lack some power and sometimes be thin. In your wrist hinge video you explain that the power and pure contact effects of hinging, and if the viewer watches this video alone they’re prone to do the “no hinge” shot that you demonstrate in the hinge video. Just a tip for something to put out content on, but thanks for all this bc this video single handedly taught me how to swing properly
Hi Eric . Fantastic tips 👏 I'm an ex Teaching Pro with an 11 year old boy who is crazy about golf I'm convinced that your Wise words will help him enormously. Thanks for that 🙏🙏👍
Eric, this video is awesome. The long arch follow through has been escaping me for 40 years. I simply had know clue. But your methodical instruction and delivery has changed my golf game dramatically. Instead of struggling to break 50 I am confident that I'm going to break 40 after I put the time in at the range. Thank you and God bless.
My buddy gave me this tip (he trained with a national team coach), I listened, understood, but quickly forgot it as I was underestimating how important this tip is. Eric you explained everything crystal clear and reminded me to work more on my follow through. Thank you for the slap in the face!
Yep. Me too. Had my rounds in low 70s and under par doing this Lost it? Forgot it? And scores were MUCH worse. Get lazy practicing too much of the minutia. If you look at the pros they all do these things Eric discusses. As amateurs we tend to easily forget one aspect of the swing and from there it can become a downward spiral. Jack Nicklaus even reviewed his fundamentals every season!
I have recently been practicing by doing exclusively the arms straight drills, combined with towel under armpits, structure ball etc. A step change in solid contact, it's just so important. Even helping my early extension. Thanks Eric.
Smart! Love that-----those are good things to do FOREVER.....lots of like 9-3 swings with those should do you well! Its a never ending project....those things to me are like stretching or doing yoga....good for you to do forever.
I'll admit Eric I was a bit skeptical when you started by saying this is the one drill/tip you would teach above all else. But after watching it I would completely agree. Fantastic breakdown for beginners and experienced golfers like myself. I've always had issues with chicken wing even though contact is good so I will start incorporating this and see how I go. Thanks heaps.
After Eric posted this, I worked at it during several range visits, and then proceeded to play the best two rounds of my life...a 76 followed by a 75 the following weekend. Buuuuut...three days after the 75 I was not able to hit any club straight for an entire nine hole round. So I came back to view this vid, and my range session today was just amazing. Eric you and your team are masterclass for all your efforts. By the way...trickshot attempt at 11:48 by the power hitter behind Eric's left shoulder. Almost had it.
Glad I came across and watched this. Often forget how important the follow through and finish position is so will definitely work on this at the range. Hopefully will improve my strike and make it more consistent too
I’ll probably watch this one five times. Really feels like the master key is in here. When I watch myself on video my follow through needs a lot of work. I also find no matter how much I try I can’t stop my head creeping towards the ball on downswing. Any tips to help with this? Thanks for the great video
...I am a senior player and often watch the tour players and notice their large swings are mostly flawless....I have always tried to copy them, without success......but now I have a drill to work on................thanks much
Just getting started with Golf. At 6:18, you're demonstrating where I'm at at the moment. My body gets all "jammed up. I'm realizing very quickly that everything needs to be all relaxed & free. You just described what I need to do to get there. Thank you!
This is so good, Eric. What a great breakdown. The way you have explained this is brilliant. Makes the inter-related pieces very clear. For me, my issue is lack of rotation. But it’s really one part and all the others need to be worked on.
fabulous video- I video taped my swing at the range yesterday and did not accomplish the extension or rib cage rotated up. off to the range before my game today. Even in today's round if I hit half "punch" shots with my irons I find they almost go the same distance. Thanks mate.
Eric, this is the greatest drill you can do and I would recommend people do this as their warm-up and basic pattern of their swing. This is also the main drill that Golftec teaches awesome thank you so much you bring so much technical detail.
@@CogornoGolf Certainly a work in progress, but the "feel" and instruction alone is pure gold. This is my first 10-15 minutes at the range or before a play a round.
I really like you are maintaining your spacing into impact with the right foot rolling and through and a soft left knee. That's lovely formula for supporting a straight left arm at impact with a slightly bent right elbow. Love to see a nice slo-mo. Very, very nice Eric, great lesson 👍
Eric, your content and your delivery in your instructional videos is excellent! I purchased your Compression Masterclass on performance golf but didn’t see where you or they identified you. I finally figured it out today. Thank you for making me a less-bad golfer.
Yeah I just figured this out on Trackman with swing path setting, I was hooking/pulling shots cause I was doing the chicken wing follow through. Me about 60% 💥 power PW 125y with nice draw shots when arms are straight in the follow through, but full power 💥 for me are pull/hook shots so I’m going to work on full power 💥 with straight arms.
I like that---let us know if you have any issues. I love practicing with trackman and video myself. Excellent feedback. If you ever need any guidance send swings to www.cogornogolf.com we would love to help there!
@@CogornoGolf Hi I like your videos. I’m considering your online course, but not sure cause I need hands on like George G does. I’ve had a couple sessions and I’d say 90% of instructors are crappie, I’m mostly self taught. 47 years old and my FULL POWER 💥 with PW goes 160y+ - 7 iron 200y with good contact. My main issue is solid contact. I have short videos posted
Hi Eric just been following your last couple of videos. I’ve been struggling with to much dynamic loft been to see my local golf pro and he’s giving me more or less the same techniques . Your videos are very informative and easy to replicate not to much information just enough excellent content 👍🏴
Love your demonstrations of "what happens if I don't...." I just pulled my medial left glute from moving out if sequence. I think 3/4 swings just working on turn abd extension will actually help@
This is a great tip with really well coached delivery. Concise and easy to understand. Question: Is the best feed back/perspective to film this down the line or facing the torso if you're only able to film one angle?
Dam it have to take time to comment 😉 because this one hit me hard, your excellent articulation of topic, demo, and production leveled me up to 12 GIR and 20+ excellently well-struck shots. It's tied together literally everything else, head in place with extension is the Holy Grail of ball striking EC 🥇🏆🧠⛳️
Thanks for a really excellent and compelling presentation. Wow👌 You and Trevor Salzman provide he best instructional golf content on the web. The two of you have helped me massively improve my contact, and golf is so much fun again.
Wow. Sort of the last piece of the puzzle for me. Been to the range twice now with great results. As you said you cant get your arms staraight and extend without rotation. Absolutely wow! Will need a few months of practice to totally engrain this
Talk about a timely video. I was at the range and trying to practice punch shots, trying to feel my arms stay straight in the backswing and followthrough. I noticed much different ballflight and distance than I was used to. It felt like everything was connected and watching this makes me realize I was definitely on to something. Going to head back to the range and work on this some more before my next round!
@@CogornoGolf It did. My 13 year old has been struggling with the chikenwing and this tip has killed the chicken and he's hitting the ball more consistent now. Thank you.
This lesson helped me slow my swing down because I am known for very fast hands and a very poor follow through I'm Fortunate enough to step out my back door and hit balls and I'm amazed how consistently I can make solid contact and it fixed my backswing also because I have a bad habit of bending my left arm I'm very stiff so for now on I'm just going settle for a short backswing left arm straight and maintain that through my swing I have to say again I'm amazed at how this has helped my golf game can't wait to try it on the golf course thanks a lot I truly appreciate this golf lesson
another excellent advice and this explains for me what I have been going for with other 'feels' - this is a more unified theory that is easier to visualize and practice
Eric, I've watched this several times over the last year and just have to shout out to you that it's a gem. This is exactly what I want in my golf swing. Question: since you filmed this, have you had any videos that you could say are a Part II to this, or any additional layers that dovetail right on top of this? I know you say the driver swing feel is that same, anything else to add when hitting driver with this video? Thanks for everything. You are tremendous.
Appreciate the support, Jim! I'd keep it simple here and just apply the concepts to all clubs equally. Here's a video Steve Sieracki and I made that you may enjoy checking out for more details! th-cam.com/video/K17Kau1U9aI/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Hope it helps!
Appreciate that Jim! I like the one a lot as well---I think its our best video we've ever done. Trying to replicate :) I would say no....not really anything after this. The goal here was that we don't really need a part 2. This is the whole book! Driver there are some key differences. Mainly with setup and some through the ball pieces. We highlighted the details of that here: th-cam.com/video/TJtx-qVSgVU/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUbRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGRyaXZlciB2cyBpcm9u th-cam.com/video/vj3py9jZ6q8/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUbRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGRyaXZlciB2cyBpcm9u I think both of those are worth a watch!
Excellent video Eric and this is exactly what I have been working on. The difficulty I have is keeping my left arm straight in the backswing. The flexibility in my shoulders must be more limited than most people? How can I overcome this fault? Thank you!
Hey there! Hard to say 100% without seeing your swing on video. Would need to do a full analysis to build a practice plan around your priorities. Send in your swings to www.cogornogolf.com so we can work together! Hope to see you join the team!👊
I've been working on keeping my arms close together, and the backswing and downswing are coming along fine, but I tend to not extend enough in the follow-through still...more so as the lofts gets lower. Will work on it. Thanks for the drill!
Terrific instructional video and practice tips - thank you..The only question I would have is ..What action or motion are your wrists doing during the drill ?..Do you have a video on wrist action that would go with this ?.....Thanks again !
Ohhh this is amazing... Excellent tips! I've been improving a lot with my swing since I'm focusing more on the FOLLOW THROUGH than on the backswing or downswing... and this video is crucial. Why do I forget to practice this when I'm on the practice range!? Thanks for the lesson!
Because there are so many freaking variables to a golf swing. Focus on the principles rather than the minutiae. Its a problem even the pros have. They have success and want more success and try to improve and they "f" up what was already their best natural swing. For "them". Or leads to too much tinkering and paralysis by analysis like Gary Player said.
Great video Eric- thanks ! I think one aspect that helps (would help) is the release of the right knee and foot in the thru swing. Without that I’m not sure the long arc is possible ?
Thank you for watching, Mike!
Priceless! 100% agree.
Totally agree
Thanks!

This is so good, Eric. What a great breakdown. The way you have explained this is brilliant. Makes the inter-related pieces very clear. For me, my issue is lack of rotation. But it’s really one part and all the others need to be worked on.
Appreciate it Marcus!
This is gold Jerry, it’s gold!
Thanks Bania!
Great information Eric. Well explained and demonstrated as always. Thank you. Randy
Appreciate it, Randy! Our pleasure!
fabulous video- I video taped my swing at the range yesterday and did not accomplish the extension or rib cage rotated up. off to the range before my game today. Even in today's round if I hit half "punch" shots with my irons I find they almost go the same distance. Thanks mate.
Thanks Steve! Glad this one helped!!
Great explanation of how to get there.. I use the Stack & Tilt method. You reinforce the components perfectly.
Thanks Bob!
Eric, this is the greatest drill you can do and I would recommend people do this as their warm-up and basic pattern of their swing. This is also the main drill that Golftec teaches awesome thank you so much you bring so much technical detail.
Our pleasure, Larry! Appreciate you being here with us!
Great Video, this is the best explanation of the entire swing I've seen and I still can't break 100. Thank you!
Thanks Rene :) I have faith in ya!
Absolutely love this video. Explained perfectly, excited to work on this. Thanks!
Thanks Neil!
What a great lesson. I tried it at the range , then tried it playing 9 holes. Unbelievable improvement in my ball striking and impact. Thank you!
Love to hear this, James! Our pleasure!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!👊
Eric, your content and your delivery in your instructional videos is excellent! I purchased your Compression Masterclass on performance golf but didn’t see where you or they identified you. I finally figured it out today. Thank you for making me a less-bad golfer.
Thank you for the kind words! Appreciate you watching the channel!
Tried the chest up feeling with my full extension and immediately improved my ball striking.
Love to hear this!
Brilliant, well explained and comprehensive. Thanks
Thanks!
Hi Eric just been following your last couple of videos. I’ve been struggling with to much dynamic loft been to see my local golf pro and he’s giving me more or less the same techniques . Your videos are very informative and easy to replicate not to much information just enough excellent content 👍🏴
Thanks, Wayne! Appreciate it!
Absolutely brilliant video! So well explained! One of the best I’ve seen on whole of TH-cam , thank you
Appreciate it!👊
Love your demonstrations of "what happens if I don't...." I just pulled my medial left glute from moving out if sequence. I think 3/4 swings just working on turn abd extension will actually help@
👊
Hope it serves you well, Kevin!
Wow! Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you for sharing. Going to the range to practice. I'm subscribed.
Appreciate your support! Hope practice goes great!
Would also recommend basically the same wide arc for use with the hybrid/fairway wood? Great Great video so simplified.
100%! All clubs.
Appreciate your kind words!
This is a great tip with really well coached delivery. Concise and easy to understand. Question: Is the best feed back/perspective to film this down the line or facing the torso if you're only able to film one angle?
Thank you! Filming from face on would be the best angle for this specific drill...but ideally, you'd film equally from both angles when practicing👍
Dam it have to take time to comment 😉 because this one hit me hard, your excellent articulation of topic, demo, and production leveled me up to 12 GIR and 20+ excellently well-struck shots.
It's tied together literally everything else, head in place with extension is the Holy Grail of ball striking
EC 🥇🏆🧠⛳️
Love to hear that :) Appreciate you letting us know !
Yes. Extremely important to consistency and subsequently confidence.
Great lesson! Thank you for this extremely important reminder!
Thank you!!
Thanks for posting. I struggle with extension in the follow through. I will work on these tips.
Hope this helps!
I too with the extension, thanks
Thanks for a really excellent and compelling presentation. Wow👌 You and Trevor Salzman provide he best instructional golf content on the web. The two of you have helped me massively improve my contact, and golf is so much fun again.
Love to hear that! Appreciate your support!
Wow. Sort of the last piece of the puzzle for me. Been to the range twice now with great results. As you said you cant get your arms staraight and extend without rotation. Absolutely wow! Will need a few months of practice to totally engrain this
Love to hear of the great results!
Great video Eric. Definitely going to help with the downswing and transition through the ball, the proper way. Thanks
Thanks Robert! Hope it serves you well!
Great golf instruction Eric!!! 💯 I agree this is your best video. Appreciate you sharing with us.
Thank you, Al!
Hope this one serves you well, Russ! Thanks for watching!!
Wow, this is just so awesome. Never worked on this ever. Friday night practice, here I come. Thanks.
Thanks, John! Hope it serves you well!
@@CogornoGolf It did. My 13 year old has been struggling with the chikenwing and this tip has killed the chicken and he's hitting the ball more consistent now. Thank you.
this guy is the best teacher
Thank you!
You give us a LOT of good tips eric and I agree, this is the best!
:) Thanks Patrick!
Great Lesson Eric , thanks! I’ve been playing with a 9-3 swing and a full extension finish for the irons. Luv it
Appreciate you watching!👊
Vids help a lot, especially the one on one vids you posted!
Appreciate it!
Awesome tip
Took it to the course yesterday can’t say what I shot, ridiculously low
No disaster shots any more all good to excellent
Love to hear this, Mark!!
Appreciate you watching Michael! Hope it serves you well on the course! :)
Really good instruction Eric. Thanks
Our pleasure, Peter! Appreciate you watching the channel!
another excellent advice and this explains for me what I have been going for with other 'feels' - this is a more unified theory that is easier to visualize and practice
Thank you, Terry!
Great video. One of the best feels to work on in the swing 🏌🏻♂️
Thank you! Agreed!

Hope it helps!
Appreciate that Jim!
I like the one a lot as well---I think its our best video we've ever done. Trying to replicate :)
I would say no....not really anything after this. The goal here was that we don't really need a part 2. This is the whole book!
Driver there are some key differences. Mainly with setup and some through the ball pieces. We highlighted the details of that here:

I think both of those are worth a watch!
Excellent video Eric and this is exactly what I have been working on. The difficulty I have is keeping my left arm straight in the backswing. The flexibility in my shoulders must be more limited than most people? How can I overcome this fault? Thank you!
Hey Kelly!
Check this video out and let us know if you have any questions!

This is another super video, top quality instructions as always!
Thanks, Alan!!
I appreciate this, but just watched your other best tip on wrist flexion and I’m new to the game. Which one should be the top focus ?
Hope this helps!
Excellent video, one of the best I have seen!
Thanks Jason!
This is such a good lesson Eric. One of your best. Thanks
Thanks Rowan!
I've been filming myself and this is the exact problem I noticed. Glad to find this video!
hope it helps Ray!
Fantastic video and something I continuously struggle with. Thanks!
Thanks David! Hope it helps your game!
Terrific instructional video and practice tips - thank you..The only question I would have is ..What action or motion are your wrists doing during the drill ?..Do you have a video on wrist action that would go with this ?.....Thanks again !
Hey Mike!
No special or different wrist motion for this.
If you search my name and "left wrist" or "right wrist" there's a bunch there for ya!
Could be the single best drill in golf. Cures many flaws. Thanks!
Our pleasure! Thanks for being here with us!
Our pleasure Nicolás! Appreciate you watching!!
I use 4 Corners Cannabis CBD. It by far the most effective and best for golf.
100%
Yes that would be like throwing and not releasing the leg and foot. No power.
Good stuff Eric, its hard to find quality instruction, on the “ exit side of the ball. been looking for something like this for a while. Thanks
Thanks Bill!👊
Great communication and teaching style; thank you!
Thanks Kevin!
