This is a drum cover of RJA's song, Face Down. AWESOME song, insane drumming, loved covering this, one of my all-time favorites.
I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums, through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself.. :) And I thouroughly succeeded in doing that, I might add ;)

(please note the toms are tuned and equalized for RECORDING purposes, live they need to be tuned a lot more "open" to sound as good as in the recording. and yes, the kit DOES sound that good live :) i had almost NO equalising on the drums themselves, and ONLY removed some low frequencies from the overheads. basically i only levelled the mix and applied compression.)
RECORDING
I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY ONE stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track. one thing i will always love about cobus, is that he has such a passion for the music he plays. you see other drummers online and their all stiff and look so blank and just move their arms for the playing. cobus puts his all into it and enjoys what hes doing and you can just tell he is having the time of his life doing it
I remember being in Grade 8 and just learning how to play a simple beat on the drums and showing my Dad with all of the enthusiasm in the world, my new favourite dude on TH-cam! This was in 2006 and I was lucky enough to meet the guy in Cape Town in 2020. Thanks for a lifetime of inspiration, Mr. Potgieter.

Four years ago, the 13 year old me first found this video, the stick flip at 1:23 is what ignited my passion for drums. I started learning the drums by myself although I don't have my own set. I learned so much watching your covers, especially the tutorials. About a year later, my friend (our bassist) allowed me to practice with his drum set. It was a basic one but it was more than enough for me. Soon after, we formed a band consisting of classmates and friends. All is going well.
Man this was my shit back in the days, once in a while I get in my feels and come back to this video. 13yrs and counting, I still enjoy this content. Legendary status!

Cobus you are fucking amazing brother!! I just read an article in drum magazine about Cobus, and I thought he was awesome before the article, but learning what I did, your drum skills are simply amazing. The fact that he never played drums until he was 16, he doesn't know how to read music, never had a drum lesson, and was discouraged by his conservative family from playing the drums and instead was expected to study engineering. Cobus is truly a one of a kind artist, and a true testament that you can become an excellent musician if you are passionate and willing to put the hard work and time into your craft. This guy deserves way more acclaim and attention than he gets and definitely would make an excellent drummer for any band.
I know you commented this a year ago, but i read that article as well and it goes to show that even when parents are against you, if you go with that little things inside you what could happen. It's insane to see what Cobus is now in the drum world
