This is a drum cover of Avenged Sevenfold's song, AFterlife.
I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;)
For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots.
I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. And I thoroughly succeeded in doing that, might I add :)

Rob Fulco I agree with OP. If you're feeling the music, it shouldn't matter if it's old, it can still have energy and feeling. This is an old video and Cobus' new vids are much higher quality.
Higher quality video doesn't equal better performance. The patterns and fills he would be playing would not be the same and could possibly ruin the cover just as much as it COULD possibly be better. But why chance it? The only way to keep moving forward is to not go backward.
Probably the main reason it won't happen is because this song isn't quite relevant these days anyway. I'm pretty much over it by now. But I'll watch Cobus drum anything, it's always good.
When I first entered Canadian High school, I sat down one afternoon and listened to a Full Playlist of Cobus' drum covers. They made me fall further in love with drumming. Thank You.

A lot of practice ;)
metronome - get practice pads for the bass pedals and spend 15 minutes a day at a tempo, to get your muscle memory of tempos on your double bass. Trust me i sit here on the computer with my practice pads listening to songs all the time just tapping away to the songs on the pedals. thats how i learned, idk about anyone else. just stay committed to your work, and it will pay off. and expect to mess up.
Go as fast as you can, keep it up for as long as you can. Keep pushing yourself and each time youll get slightly faster, and have more stamina

+priyanuz deka Drumsticks vary in weight and length, and they break surprisingly easily when played at a certain force; maybe he needed heavier or lighter sticks for that particular part? I'm not completely certain, but it's a possibility :3

I'm fairly sure this was recorded in multiple takes. The PST logo on the ride switches from top to bottom quite a few times in the video. Also at 3:11 in the video Cobus is moving his stick up towards the ride but on the very next shot at 3:13 it's back down on the bow.
The video is made out of several recordings yup. You can also see that the red cup behind him is changing its direction (look at the handle)
Does that even matter? That means he played this song several times. That's not a bad thing.

It's not necessarily a bad thing but Cobus should be able to play a song all the way through without the need for multiple takes. I've jammed this song many times and have never managed to mess it up. It is good however with the Quadrum series that he didn't use multiple takes as it allows the viewer to appreciate it more knowing that Cobus could do it in one go rather than having to do it multiple times.
Scott Bainbridge Look, all im saying is that he took several takes of this song. He might not have taken breaks. Im in a video class and I understand why he did that. I would rather watch a video that changes angles and gives you perspectives of what he does than just one camera in one place. I agree that he should have watch out for that. What I would have done, and this is advice for you Cobus, have multiple cameras recording you for about three sessions and then use the footage, because some people are nit-pickey online...(Ahem) but still, I see where your coming from.
