- Using my Canon R6 and the RF 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM lenses, I photograph a College Beach Volleyball match between UTC and Jacksonville State at the UTC Sports Complex in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I had some good partly cloudy light for this early spring match.

The photos at 5:22 and 12:45 were the ones that UTC used on their website. Which photos would you have used?
Excellent work and images Phil!! 👏👏
Thank you, Bill! I really appreciate it.
This was great Phil. I miss doing sports photography so I’m reliving it thru your videos!
Thank you! I really enjoy it but sports photography is tough for me. if I manage to get access, I feel like I am bound to photograph EVERY event which I really don't want to do. Beach volleyball worked out good. I was able to photograph two matches this season. All the rest were during times I was at work. Two is a perfect amount.
@@PhilThach I totally understand. I gave up being sports photographer since I no longer wanted to commit to shooting a whole season in any sport. Lacrosse had 40 players on a team and I would have parents ask me to get shots of their daughter. I was focusing on the action but if I had to look for specific uniform numbers, that made it difficult. I both miss it and glad I’m no longer committed.
@@gnphoto21 That makes perfect sense. Thanks, George!
Great photos
Thank you!
Great shots! I kept going back and forth if I liked the 24-70 or 70-200 shots better. In the end I liked them both! I really liked the shot at 5:22 nicely done!
Thank you, Stephen! Both lenses have their advantages. The 70-200 only worked on one court and the baseline while the 24-70 worked on all three courts. I was glad I brought both. Have a great weekend!
Looks like a fun time, and some great work getting fabulous action shots!
Thank you, Bill!
PHIL-- Question? Do you ever think you will purchase the Nikon Z9? Phil-- Are you now full time Canon? There are times I feel like I would like to change over to the R6 and some of the wonderful lenses that you have, I'm a little jealous!! Have great weekend and it's Mother's Day! Randy Bocksnick (MT)
Hi Randy. I think the Z9 is an outstanding camera from everything I've seen and read. However, I usually don't purchase flagship cameras. I do think the Z9 is reasonably priced for a flagship but it's still more than I'd like to spend. One thing in Nikonland I'm really impressed with right now is the 800 f/6.3 Z PF they are about to release. That looks even more awesome than the Z9. Still, I'm more likely to get a Canon R7 next if they release it later this year as rumored. I'm still using my Z50, Zfc, Z6 and D500 from time to time. Thank you for your continued viewing of our videos, Randy!
Hi Phil. Nice sports shots. I miss your nature shots you used to go to a park with a ton of tulips. Will you go there this year?
Thanks, Karen! We won't be going to Gibbs gardens this year, the long drive there took a lot out of us. LOL Don't fret, I have lots of flower photography that will be coming on the channel this spring and summer. I have plans to visit a garden tomorrow. Of course, I tend to stay ahead on videos so something I work on tomorrow won't come out until early June.
@@PhilThach I really loved that garden
@@KarenVaisman1 It is a fantastic place, but the drive, especially to get there at sunrise was tough so we did not visit enough to get our moneys worth out of the annual pass. You can always rewatch our videos from last spring there! They are easy to find in the macro and flower photography playlist. 🌷
Some great action shots Phil. Loved the ones flying through the air. R6 performs beautifully in this environment. Thanks for sharing buddy cheers 🍻 👍🙏
Thank you, Adrian! I really do enjoy doing sports photography, hopefully I'll have access to UTC sports next year as well.
Very informative, thank you :) Are you focusing manually on your subjects during the game? What's your tip on keeping the players sharp while they're running around? I've been shooting a beach tournament recently and focusing manually, too many times I caught the net rather than the player
I think you! I used auto focus for all of these shots. I use the canon, full sensor, face and eye detect auto focus system, and while it wasn’t without flaw, overall, it worked very well as you can see in these photos.
Awesome shots once again Phil. Do you mainly use the electronic shutter or sometimes the mechanical one? Cheers
Thank you, Peter! I use mechanical shutter for sports, the electronic shutter on the R6 (and R5) introduces rolling shutter distortion making fast moving balls look odd. 12 FPS mechanical is fast enough for me. I do, occasionally use the 20fps electronic shutter on birds, especially birds in flight.
@@PhilThach thanks Phil! I’m aware of the rolling shutter issues, wanted to hear it from you. 12 fps is more than enough imo in most scenarios , that’s for sure!😊
@@peterviragphoto I think the R3 is supposed to be a little better but not perfect and the Nikon Z9 had better be better because it does not have a mechanical shutter at all! I do enjoy using the electronic shutter because there is less lag in the electronic viewfinder, but otherwise I prefer mechanical.
i love your video
