    Very nice photos unlike a lot of the TH-cam volleyball photography tips… Your examples are really above average like way above average fantastic work…

    Nice shots. I shoot swimming outdoors. I know the challenges of shooting fast action indoors, battling iso and shutter speeds. I had to shoot one swim meet indoors and it was a challenge.

      I have always wanted to photograph a swim meet but out local schools dont have swimming... maybe one day.

    Perfect timing young man. Tomorrow will be my first volleyball event in many years. No way on the 300. I tried that from a platform above the stands and found it impossible to use free hand and the monopod was worse trying to shoot down over a railing. Too big too. I plan on using my old ef 70-200 with adapter on the R6. I dont have a lot of choices in this gym. All on the floor and nothing elevated unless I use the far corner platform above the stands. I think that would make me too far out for 200mm. I will just roam back and forth along the side. Nice shots and gives me something to look for. Thanks and take care.

      Hope it helps just a bit. I’m still learning my self and the 300 is a beast but it’s been a blessing in times but the 70-200 is perfect for volleyball tbh. Happy shooting!

      My 300 is a beast and the best I got. For some reason with the 1dx mk1 I am getting a series of photos sharp sharp soft soft sharp? No clue what is happening. Not slipping off focus because soft gets softer behind the player????@@DLivingston

      Roughly, I am setting my overall exposure. Often I hit AUTO first to get an idea of a start. Usually drop the shadows to 0, bump the contrast, adjust the highlights usually down a tad. When it comes to the colors, I make sure the red is true as possible. I adjust the orange a tad down on saturation and the reason for that is the yellow bounces off of the floor logo and turns the players legs orange. Hope that helps.

    Appreciate the video...good info. As far as terminology, transition that over to Hitter's or Attacker's. Pin Hitters are going to come off of the left or right side and the middle is actually called a Middle Blocker. Basically the Hitters (person) are Attacking (action). Good stuff though!

    Love the photos you took and thanks for the tips you gave throughout this video! Did you experience any issues with overheating when recording video with the R6? I currently shoot sports for my local university on the 7D Mark II and I’m looking to go full frame to get decent quality video.

    • @DLivingston
      @DLivingston  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been using the R6 for 2 years now, if not more.. I can't remember when I got them but I have never had my R6 overheat. I have shot 8 hours of video at a wedding and never saw it overheat. I have covered Track, Baseball and Softball all in one day doing photos and never had an issue. The R6 is a solid camera!

    Good info and good shots. It would be nice to have more separation from the crowd. One idea is to put your focus box on the bottom of the frame when you are on the opposite side shooting your players through the net. You then focus on the attacker's legs under the net because in most attacks, the player's head is in basically the same plane as their thighs so you avoid your AF grabbing the net. Also, it's great to get some shots in warm-ups. Usually if you ask, the referees are fine with you using the referee's stand during warm-ups. Also during warm-ups, I like to put my camera on the floor on a Platypod just beside or slightly under the referee stand and then shoot up at attacking players. You get some very dynamic shots that way. Good job and keep it up. Yes, volleyball is hard (I shoot for a DI P5 school) but it can also be very rewarding.

      Never thought of aiming for the kegs when shooting across. Great tip, I’ll try it out in the fall! I do shoot pregame just don’t usually share that in videos! It gives me options to get players that don’t play often! Thanks for swinging by Mike!

    I’m saving up for a 70-200 2.8 but currently I have a 75-300, 28-135, and an 18-135. I have a canon rebel t5 and a t7. I’ve done one volleyball game and ISO was 6400, shutter was 1/1200 and aperture was f/5.6. Any tips on what I should try and aim for or what lens would be better? The lighting is also really rough, the pro photographer for the university I shoot for even says he hates shooting in this gym because of the lighting.

    • @DLivingston
      @DLivingston  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Gym lighting is really bad in most places. If you can look into the canon 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8z both are cheaper lenses bought used but will handle the lighting much better. No zoom but if you can find a spot on the floor that you can sit, you can make both of those work decently well.

      I have this same issue! I've recently started practicing sports photography by shooting at my daughter's youth volleyball games, but the gym lighting is terrible! I've recently upgraded from the EOS R6ii to the R5ii, but I still have the RF 24 - 105 mm at f4 - f7.1. I also have the RF 100 - 400 mm at f5.6 - f8, but I use the 24-105 because of the faster aperture. I quickly realized I need at least a f2.8 to get any type of worthy images.

      @@DLivingston, Are you referring to the EF 50mm f1.8? If so, how efficient is EOS R series auto-focusing using the adapter for EF lenses?

    • @DLivingston
      @DLivingston  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@leotexas3485 yeah, it’s tough in any gym. What made you upgrade from the r6ii to the r5ii? Def find a 2.8 and have fun!

      @@leotexas3485 I would go with the RF lenses if you have the Eos R but from my experience, adapting lenses has worked well for me. I adapted lenses for 2 years with no issues.

    My volleyball daughters have tormented me endlessly for saying "spike", "spiker" or "spiking". Apparently, it's "hit", "hitter" and "hitting". I'm on the West Coast though; maybe it's different back east? Great Photos! Thanks for taking the time to share and help the rest of us learn.

      The position is Outside Hitter or Opposite (Hitter). Spike is a specific type of attack designed to drive the ball quickly to the floor without giving an opponent a chance to defend.

    i use nikon Z9 gen 2 FTZ Sigma Sport 120-300mm and at 120mm since top of bleachers aka grand stand. also that combo for lens and camera is 10lb sucks can not shot on court. only when stand along bleachers on court. or in grandstand. but i have nikon 28-75mm F/2.8 mirrorless lens. i have face detection on with 3D on nikon Z9 also have to shoot from other side gym to do fact to many people on side where press and sitting area and to many fans in crowd

      I used to have the 120-300 f2.8 and love it! That was before my volleyball days though. I also use the face detection often for volleyball and it comes in very handy! Thanks for watching this video from last season. Timing is funny because I just uploaded a short video today from my first game back this season covering volleyball.

      Two Questions for you @chrislognshot Have you shot your Z9 with 3D face detection autofocus through the net? If so, does the net impede the Z9's 3D face detection focusing capabilities or does the camera work okay?
      I'm currently shooting a D5 and I just looked at a new Z9 yesterday thinking about buying it and want to see if the Z9 will focus on the face while shooting through the net.
      Currently when I shoot from court level behind one of the teams trying to kill shots from the other team at the net, I have to focus on the player's kneepads which are below the net because my D5 struggles mightily when I'm trying to focus on the player's face through the net. The net really deals me focusing fits.
