They wouldn't need to look much further than Bethesda's modding forum to see good reasons never to work with that company. They completely fucked up console modding and pretty much tore their community apart. Additionally, they outright stole mods from their players and sold them for profit. Even Far Harbor is nearly a carbon copy of a popular New Vegas mod campaign.
Which makes me sad that both id Software and MachineGames are stuck working under them. Id's been my favorite game developer ever since I was a kid and MachineGames has earned nothing but my respect between Escape from Butcher Bay and the latest Wolfenstein.
For what it's worth, id has enough reputation that the suits probably aren't stupid enough to really meddle with them. Also, at the HH site, apparently they did some work with Irrational on Bioshock Infinite, which is neat.

Not that the new 2017 Prey game is bad, but this seems just WAY more interesting and fun, a space western set in a cyberpunk city, with cool parkour mechanics, sandbox area with rpg elements where you take on the role of a space bounty hunter taking on bounties on dangerous alien criminals and gangs, with lots of cool new features, hell this sounds better than any game now. It a real goddamn shame that it got cancelled.
Was going to say this. I really enjoyed new Prey, although I started to get bored towards the end. Prey 2 sounded way more fun. Plus, I like more ambiguous moral systems.
I never kept up with Prey back when it came out, though I remember everyone being really hyped for the sequel. Now that I've actually seen what the sequel could've been, I kinda wanna bang my head against a wall because holy fuck that looks amazing. Goddammit, Bethesda. You keep fuckin' up.
After this fiasco, I'm done supporting Bethesda in any way. I'll take my free Skyrim HD upgrade and never play it since mods have already outdone it. What they did to Human Head was ridiculous, and if I had to guess, illegal. If there's ever a major Bethesda email hack, I can practically guarantee we'll see evidence of illegal activity. That would really make my day.
I believe Human Head. What we've seen looks awesome. Bethesda saying the game failed their quality standards when they've published Rogue Warrior is clearly bullshit. Bethesda did similar shenanigans to get the Fallout license from Interplay: they gave Interplay a loan, set a deadline, and according to the contract if Interplay's progress failed standards Bethesda set, the license would lapse to Bethesda entirely. Every human and alien in the universe has said with one voice, "The new 'Prey' looks like a shit Bureau knock-off. Prey 2 was awesome. Fuck Pete Hines for ruining the latter and publishing the former instead".
It's very unfortunate what happened to the game. The concept does sound amazing, and even though I'm not a fan of first person shooters I would have definitely played the game. And what Bethesda did when they refused to be bought sounds just fucking evil. Just evil, man.
Thank you for making this video, between their shitty play testing, seriously dropping the ball with F4, and the whole Human Head situation I became sick to my very core whenever Bethesda/Zenimax receive praise.
Yeah fuck bethesda let's just forget the good games they did. (Dishonored, Doom, Wolfenstein.) On a serious note you guy's need to get laid. It's just a game.
What sucks the most is that I recently read something that Humanhead died, was rebranded as a new studio with some of the remnants of the old team, which was then bought out by Bethesda. All of this pain, anguish, and pettiness...all for nothing. That hurts the most.
It's pretty shitty to see a publisher screw over a developer like this, but it's fairly common. It's not well published but Bethesda has a track record of messing with developers and then buying them out. There's really nothing stopping these giant publishers from screwing with their developers.
That 'Prey' reboot trailer... *WUUUUUUUUUUUUB* OMG MUH EYE SO STRANGE GUYZ *WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB* OMG SCARY STUFF SCENE CUTS *WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB* WAAA SOMETHING DARK JUMPED AT MEEE *WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB* It's like they tried to make a trailer _out_ of red flags.
I have to admit for a long time I didn't give Prey 2017 a chance because of the shenanigans with the original Prey IP. Having played Prey 2017 it quickly became a favourite of mine and I think it's one of the best immersive sims out there. I think naming it "Prey" saddled it with issues it didn't deserve and alienated a chunk of potential players rather than managing to 'cash in' on the name.
Ugh, that E3 demo you showed (while a bit rough around the edges) looked so cool. Can't wait for Bioshock meets Dead Space to feature none of that rad shit.
Bethesda has quality standards? Could have fooled me. I love they're Elder Scrolls and Fallout, but this is a series I never got to try and Prey 2 looked like it was right up my alley too.
This game would be pretty f*cking awesome mechanically and beautiful graphically even today, 5 years later, when game market is overflown with photorealistic graphics and innovative mechanics. In 2012/13.... this would've been a blockbuster, a masterpiece. Curse you, Bethesda, for ruining this.
+qwertyMrJINX Yeah but that's debatable, considering those games make money no matter how fundamentally shite or good they are due to th brain dead fans they have no options but to publish BGS games, at this point they're like a necessary evil
Fuck Bethesda for this. This game looked so promising... I hope another developer makes a similar game to this concept. And i actually really liked the original Prey. Still have it on disc.
I honestly remember seeing the Prey 2 gameplay videos and shitting my pants with excitement, years later I completely forgot until this video. So sad to know a game of such promise is gone. Watching this LiC got my hype for a game I'll never play, but I guess that is sorta the point of the series.
I hope human head use the idea of Prey 2 in their next release. It's a sound idea and would probably work in today's video game climate. It's different, original and to be honest, I really think people are waiting for an alien bounty hunting game.
@Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. Really, many people thought that twist in Prey made it stand out as it presented an interesting angle when it comes to player agency. And I thought the whole experience was enjoyable for what it was. I liked it better than the Dishonored series. And I would understand your disdain towards ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks but Arkane? They didn't do anything to Human Head. All they did was make their version of the game You are just being spiteful.
@Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. But that "rubbish" was interesting and unique to many different people. There are youtubers like Extra credits and Errant signal who have gone and talked about Prey's ending in depth. You are acting like a spoiled brat here. I can understand not finding something to be as good as others have claimed it to be (Witcher 3 comes to my mind) but the attitude you are displaying here is garbage and shows your immaturity.
@Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. Well that is just your own opinion then. But you didn't have to call anyone an idiot just for appreciating something you did not.
The name is just a name. Through and through. Tom Hall from id came up with the concept and the whole time has been a working title that was slapped on two different good titles. Prey itself is vaporware.
For those interested in playing the original Prey, it's only available on PC via retail but the CD keys will activate on Steam (assuming they haven't been used). Used 360 copies are easy enough to track down, but the PC version is better for obvious reasons.
That sucks.. but i'm pretty happy with the new Prey. Still creative as hell with a lot of way to interact and manipulate the "playground" lots of games don't.
In addition to all this, Bethesda really needs to re-release Prey on Steam and Xbox Marketplace via backwards compatibility. I've really enjoyed some of their games this gen (mainly Wolfenstein and Doom), but they're kind of a dick publisher in a lot of ways. Take a look at how stand-offish Pete Hines (their VP of marketing/PR) got when asked about a simple re-release of Wolfenstein 2009 on Steam. twitter.com/dcdeacon/status/592884690471755778
"Bethesda really needs to re-release Prey on Steam and Xbox Marketplace via backwards compatibility." But then that means releasing a superior product that's competing with their own. And it's not like it has $40 of DLC to sell with it either.
the more you look into how bethesda does things behind the scenes the more you see how much scumbags they really are. i think they are worst then EA and activision
Prey 1 was such a cool game with amazing concepts. Their ideas of space were incredible. You'd be on a planet which was really just a bowling ball on a desk. Then you'd go into a small cube which would flip you upside down and teleport you into another room. Have been looking for Prey 2 for years!
Not even greed, but spite. Bethesda would have made a good profit off of this even if they had not bought out the studio. They just wanted to punish them for saying 'no'.
This is a great video that was very painful to watch for me. If Prey 2 had came out and it was exactly how it looked like at E3, then there's not a single doubt in my mind that it would've been my favorite game ever. I was 13 years old when I saw that E3 2011 demo and I fell in love with the concept as I love the idea of being a bounty hunter on an alien planet with the freedom to do whatever I want. I was originally fine with Arkane working on Prey because I thought the devs behind Dishonored would handle that concept well but the new Prey really doesn't appeal to me.
WTF! They have thrown away a fully functional alien world where different aliens with different goals messed up with or helped humanity and you fought them with epic guns, parkour and many approaches to every situation, for this new rebooted System Shocked game where every enemy has the same color palette and you turn into objects to solve problems? The fans of the game are system shocked right now. Even Tommy would appear which means there was more to the story. When we completed Prey one and the guerrilla native humans of the sphere and us traveled to the galaxy THIS was one hell of an experience....Why? Because the hero was a victim coming from our time, he lost his girlfriend and grandpa and he was forced to learn superpowers, to fight an alien harvest world, to destroy it and then travel to new worlds where other aliens with different agendas were trying to use humans. Tommy and Kylian would be one hell of an action duo, a space barbarian and an amnesiac bounty hunter on a Bladerunner/Starwars world trying to survive. The new rebooted title may be a really badass game but branding Prey something completely different than the original title is a sign that a lot of people in Bethesda don't love videogame at all.
Human Head Studios shut down in November of 2019. I like to imagine in an alternate universe Prey 2 did release. Humam Head joined the likes of Platinum, From Soft, and other studios, releasing a quality title every few years. That's not our universe though. Bethesda killed any chance of that.
I've heard a lot of bad stuff about ZeniMax and Bethesda, but this does bear the question how Tango Gameworks, MachineGames, Arkaine and id Software got aquired by them. Btw these all got aquired around the same time in 2010.
I'd imagine that they just saw a profitable deal and accepted it without much trouble. Id, for instance, wasn't doing too hot by the mid 2000's and so I don't doubt that they jumped on Bethesda's offer. The problem with the whole Human Head ordeal is that they didn't want to tie themselves to a studio (which Bethesda really should have just left alone; I can't believe how petty they got) and that they were in the middle of BUILDING A GAME for Bethesda. Whoever made the call to float the concept of buying Human Head at a time like that, and then pushed for it after the initial refusal, really was a total idiot.
It's like asking how EA bought out all those great companies between 2004 and 2007, they just had money and bought things with potential only to leech them dry and cast aside the husks.
This is a really weird situation for me, because I adore both this concept, and yet I'm a huge fan of Arkane and their... I guess style? I dunno, something just always feels right, and I'm very happy about any project Arkane is behind. Prey looked incredible, and was one of the few trailers to catch my eye in a way that had me watching it again and again. However Prey 2 looked like one of the coolest games to me, and I did the same thing back when the was revealed. Its a huge shame that got scrapped. Meanwhile the new Prey is getting beat over the head with accusations that it directly killed the other game (I guess Arkane and bethesda are suddenly the same), and you just mostly hear people trashing the new product and not giving it a chance when it'd likely be praised as a SS2 spiritual successor under any other name. It almost feels like Bethesda screwed both of them over with this move, and its just sad. That being said, this was a great and informative video and I'm glad you handled it tastefully instead of being another one of those "Prey ruined everything! Burn it down, and maybe its blood will bring back our sacred Prey 2!" guys.
Bethesda also started the DLC and microtransactions trend with their horse armor Oblivion DLC back in 2006. They also stopped Linux support for Quake Live, and made that game $10 instead of F2P. That company along with Zenimax deserves the worst and should go bankrupt.
But hey, we could get a cool sci-fi bounty hunter game from Star Wars... Oh wait, EA owns the license for Star Wars games now? Man, nothing about this situation has worked in our favor. Usually there's at least SOME form of silver lining.
So, I'm a guy who's pretty hyped for Bethesda's 2017 version of Prey. But, I have to admit, they made a HUGE mistake with ruining the development of Prey 2. To me, it's a Fallout-meets-Star Wars type game, which is bad. Ass. I mean, a fucking space bounty hunter?! I can't think of one person I know who wouldn't see Prey 2 and go, "hell yes". I still believe that the current Prey has good qualities, being sort of a Bioshock-meets-Star Trek type game, but Prey 2 does look way better.
Man, I didn't even know about the first Prey, let alone a sequel as conceptually awesome and well-announced as that. In this day and age where trickle-in pre-release info is the norm and Sonic Mania is *actually* one of the games we know enough about to have a really good idea of what to expect, Prey 2 getting *that* kind of reveal with so much promise and getting screwed over in the end just feels... fucking tragic.
Thanks for putting all that together. I really like the first Prey and was so eager to see a sequel bring the franchise to the next level. Prey 2 looked so promising for its time, that's a shame we'll never have to play all that's been crafted by this team. I still trust Arkane for making a great game (especially after Disho 2), but it will keep pissing me off that it will kill everything Human Head was trying to build with their franchise. Remembering what a development hell the first Prey was makes it even worse.
Thank you for making this video. Prey 2 is a game that I still would love play to this day, don't even care if there is a leak of the alpha/beta. It's odd that I thought about the game today only then you uploaded this video. I just would like to see more bounty hunter games (in a first or third person shooter.) I guess I'll get my old copy of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. It's not bounty hunting in it's core but it is enjoyable.
EA and Ubisoft gets all the bad press, I knew some details but this video actually made me angry for Human Head. Also >Didn't meet Bethesda's quality standards That's a laugh and a half.
I'm excited for the new game, it looks interesting and different than most shooters. I think people saying it will be shit just because of the title is kind of silly. BUT from what I've seen, the game has no reason to be called Prey. There could be story elements or connections that are in the full game, and if so, then it's fine. But so far it seems like Bethesda was afraid of making it a new IP. Not to mention their hostile takeover and ridiculous treatment of Human Head. I don't know why Bethesda is constantly praised. They lie in their promotional material, release unfinished games, exploit the nostalgia of fans, and take part in a massively anti consumer practice(no reviews before or by launch).
It reminds of the XCOM reboot debacle where XCOM was originally going to be rebooted as a "strategic" fps set in the 50s with black goo aliens and humanoids. Only with XCOM the reboot project eventually changed mid-production so much that eventually it series instead got rebooted with an actual enhanced remake that ended up being much more memorable, while the "reboot" became XCOM DECLASSIFIED and quickly forgotten about....
Wait... so they want to make a spritual successor of System Shock 2 with a 1960's asthetik? So its just Bioshock then, huh? Also this is the first time i saw actual gameplay of Prey 2 and it looked amazing! I much more prefer this one over the reboot, wish they never cancelled it. I hope this game gets leaked one day.
Just caught this vid via a link on the steam forums & wanted to say thanks, really great video covering some interesting points about the current Prey & its previous iterations. The whole Bethesda scenario wasnt something I was aware of at the time as I wasnt following that closely but sheds some light on dodgy practices. Anyways +1 for a great vid & subbed for more:)

I'll never understand why videos like this don't get millions of views.
Picked up the original Prey for a dollar in a gamestop as a random purchase ($1 game? can't pass) and lucked up and it was a great game lol
After watching this video, I think I'm going to go find a couple to play for myself!
I didn't know I wanted Prey 2.
I'm depressed now
After this fiasco, I'm done supporting Bethesda in any way.
Bethesda is a bad company both by its practices and its products.
I look at F1/F2. Then I look at F4 and I cannot believe how they managed to fuck up a whole IP!!
+Benny Olly bethesda is the next EA
Also... Bad writing!
Just look at President Eden conversation at FO3 lol.
And now that new studio is being closed down by Microsoft because Redfall failed. The Human Head Studios story is just constant tragedy.
The new Prey, although different to this, is also quite good. But I would've still preferred to have gotten this game as well..
Another reason to hate Bethesda? I'll take it.
It's pretty shitty to see a publisher screw over a developer like this, but it's fairly common. It's not well published but Bethesda has a track record of messing with developers and then buying them out. There's really nothing stopping these giant publishers from screwing with their developers.
That 'Prey' reboot trailer...
*WUUUUUUUUUUUUB*
OMG MUH EYE SO STRANGE GUYZ
*WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB*
OMG SCARY STUFF SCENE CUTS
*WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB*
WAAA SOMETHING DARK JUMPED AT MEEE
*WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB*
It's like they tried to make a trailer _out_ of red flags.
You forgot the Nolan trailer dramatic sound effect
That's what the wubbing was.
Wait, Bethesda has quality standards beyond "modders will fix it"?
I love they're Elder Scrolls and Fallout, but this is a series I never got to try and Prey 2 looked like it was right up my alley too.
man ive never seen the gameplay footage of Prey 2, good god this game would've been amazing
a story of corporate bullshit. never surprising but always depressing
Very good games journalism! It does still exist. Remember, journalists are the historians of the now.
Why is Bethesda run by leeches?
They are owned by Zenimax who are even bigger miserly shitlords
and nasty feminist shitlords!
not leeches, they're run by the typhon.
They're all lawyers
Its almost been a decade and I'm still mad we never got it.
Wow, how amazing Prey 2 would've been, what a great concept. And then a Prey multiplayer where you're either the prey or the predator/hunter.
Bethesda talking about quality standards..... Wow.
How could anyone believe the "quality standard" BS coming from Bethesda of all places is beyond me.
lol Quality standards from the guys who made Fallout 4. That's rich.
Don't forget about Rouge Warrior and the PlayStation 3 version of Skyrim.
Publisher an developer aren't the same. Bethesda game studios and Betgesda Softworks are different entities
n00t d00t So? They still published Fallout 4 as well.
+qwertyMrJINX Yeah but that's debatable, considering those games make money no matter how fundamentally shite or good they are due to th brain dead fans they have no options but to publish BGS games, at this point they're like a necessary evil
and Fallout 76 now
Fuck Bethesda for this. This game looked so promising... I hope another developer makes a similar game to this concept. And i actually really liked the original Prey. Still have it on disc.
What a superb video. Well done mate.
I honestly remember seeing the Prey 2 gameplay videos and shitting my pants with excitement, years later I completely forgot until this video. So sad to know a game of such promise is gone. Watching this LiC got my hype for a game I'll never play, but I guess that is sorta the point of the series.
This still hurts. I wish there was a way to revive this game.
I hope human head use the idea of Prey 2 in their next release. It's a sound idea and would probably work in today's video game climate. It's different, original and to be honest, I really think people are waiting for an alien bounty hunting game.
Nope, they instead decided to make The Quiet Man.
@Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. Man your head is so far up your ass. Don't you feel any shame for acting like a douchbag?
Hasn't bethesda (allegedly) done the exact same things in the past with other studios?
That's what I've heard, but I wasn't able to find anything for this video.
Apparently it is pretty common.
Well, if it's true, that would certainly explain Brink
From an insider in the gaming industry. Apparently, this is much more common than one would think.
How do you think they acquired Fallout?
+CanderousXOrdo Wasn't the IP pretty much dead after Van Buren flopped in development?
You can get Prey on Steam by purchasing the physical edition. The key is redeemable on Steam.
Nothinglastsforever Yup, I've got it in my library. But it'd be nice to have it right in the store considering retail keys still activate there.
the more you look into how bethesda does things behind the scenes the more you see how much scumbags they really are. i think they are worst then EA and activision
I was SO hyped for Prey 2 :(
Prey 1 was such a cool game with amazing concepts. Their ideas of space were incredible. You'd be on a planet which was really just a bowling ball on a desk. Then you'd go into a small cube which would flip you upside down and teleport you into another room. Have been looking for Prey 2 for years!
So Bethesda destroyed a promising new ip they were impressed with and crippled a small studio out of greed, good one guys
This makes me sad. Prey 2 looked so much better than whatever Bethesda is putting out.
Instead of scrapping Prey 2 I wish they'd make a few adjustments and let that be the new Duke Nukem.
Watching this video is just painful at this point
>Bethesda
>Quality standards
ayy
Bethesda is basically EActivisionBisoft except that the fruits of their bad practices have been slower to catch up to them.
Look at this fucking sci-fi masterpiece, god dammit.
The original "Prey" was quality. Very original and a blast to play
I still long for this game. I’d honestly buy this over cyberpunk 2077 any day. Cyberpunk cut its parkour system. This didn’t. This game is beautiful!
Bethesda also started the DLC and microtransactions trend with their horse armor Oblivion DLC back in 2006. They also stopped Linux support for Quake Live, and made that game $10 instead of F2P. That company along with Zenimax deserves the worst and should go bankrupt.
Evidently Prey 2017 was supposed to be called psycoshock and was called PREY due to license/copyright shenagins.
I still believe that the current Prey has good qualities, being sort of a Bioshock-meets-Star Trek type game, but Prey 2 does look way better.
still remember wanting to see more Prey 2 than GTA V
Let this be a lesson to learn, greed kills both ambition and potential.
Bethesda "Quality" "Standards"
weird hearing that spoken
I KNEW THIS GAME WAS A REAL… every time I talked about it the game stop employee would say that’s dues ex
first Prey was Epic....RIP Tommy
Man, I didn't even know about the first Prey, let alone a sequel as conceptually awesome and well-announced as that. In this day and age where trickle-in pre-release info is the norm and Sonic Mania is *actually* one of the games we know enough about to have a really good idea of what to expect, Prey 2 getting *that* kind of reveal with so much promise and getting screwed over in the end just feels... fucking tragic.
Thank you, so damn much for producing this video.
I will probably never get over this game being canceled
Preaching to the choir.
same here!
Also
>Didn't meet Bethesda's quality standards
That's a laugh and a half.
Those black ghost aliens look so uninspired and boring. How fun will it be to shoot at a ghost?
It reminds of the XCOM reboot debacle where XCOM was originally going to be rebooted as a "strategic" fps set in the 50s with black goo aliens and humanoids. Only with XCOM the reboot project eventually changed mid-production so much that eventually it series instead got rebooted with an actual enhanced remake that ended up being much more memorable, while the "reboot" became XCOM DECLASSIFIED and quickly forgotten about....
Do you even fucking know what a horror game is, you imbecile?
Bethesda lost a fan today. But human head got a huge new fan.
Wait... so they want to make a spritual successor of System Shock 2 with a 1960's asthetik? So its just Bioshock then, huh?
Also this is the first time i saw actual gameplay of Prey 2 and it looked amazing! I much more prefer this one over the reboot, wish they never cancelled it. I hope this game gets leaked one day.
So if not Prey, that they should make Rune 2!
But now in the new Prey, we get to become a Cup. -_-
LOL "quality standards.." fucking Bethesda...
EA should fund Human head studios change the assets to Star Wars and make a Bobba Fett Game
EA is a horrible choice. lol
+vote4waifu I only say EA for the Star wars license
I am hyped for the new Prey, but I'll always miss the old prey 2. Going by the gameplay and premise, that was my dream game.
yeah that prey remake is no sense. PREY 2 that's all we want.
Well fuck. I'll wait for Cyperpunk to come out.
Thanks for putting all of this together. Good to know the full story. This business practice is completely disgusting.
