I can't find this on Gamespot's website -- perhaps it's no longer available? The great thing about this video is there's no E3 commentary or background noise. It's audio straight from the game experience! I also bumped up the gamma since it was originally extremely dark.

I think the trend is beginning. Space Marine's sequel was cancelled but it was announced a few months ago that they're working on it and I believe I heard mention that the company doing so is planning on developing cancelled games.

+TheForgery Their PR guy is a pathological liar. Keep in mind, Bethesda never disputed the claims that Zenimax tried to buy Human Head through milestone abuse. That was what sunk the game. If the project wasn't up to snuff, then why did Bethesda contract Obsidian to work on Prey 2 and spend months negotiating with Human Head for their proprietary tech? Lots of petty cowards at Bethesda.

No. That's what they say. The game was at a level of quality no different than any other game in a pre-Alpha state. When a game gets that much positive attention from the public garnering multiple Top 10 desired games, a competent and pro-active publisher would help nuture the game to its maximum potential, not just ignore the developer for months and months.
Would Human Head ever consider releasing this game as something other than a Prey title? I'd pay a pretty penny for it on Kickstarter. No matter how much I like system shock-like games, I'm definitely not buying the "new Prey" unless they remove your game's good name from it. Bethesda are scum for what they did.

I'm not longer at the Studio. Everything would have to be new... however the guys at Human Head are really talented and would make it better than what you saw in Prey 2!

There was more creativity in 8 minutes of this game play then most games have in its entire full length.
It's easy to have lots of zany crazy ideas in an 8 minute gameplay mockup. It's something else to actually make it into a game.

Yep, the team felt like the small, creative Rocksteady team before they release Batman Arkham Asylum which exploded into a series of sequels.
Bethesda Marketing said no one will identify with Tommy's spiritual Native American goals and he was too whiney in the first game. so they said forget Tommy and make the protagonist someone else. Tommy was in the game however, as a mentor and guide on Exodus. After Prey, he spent years tracking down the Keepers and found them pulling the political and power strings on the Planet Exodus. They were constructing a new Sphere. Not a Harvester like the one in Prey, but a War Sphere to go back to Earth and destroy it. You (the player) were going to help Tommy destroy that Sphere before it left the planet. One of the DLC could have been Tommy's story between Prey 1 and 2. But as you know now, it was more important for Bethesda to own the studio than finish Prey 2.

+Mexican Gamer The stories of the Bethesda Fallout games and Skyrim are utter trash. Wolfenstein: The New Order had a great campaign, but Fallout 3, 4, and Skyrim had some of the worst main quests in any RPG, ever.

This was built on an old engine. IdTech 4 sure looks futureproof to me.

Like, sure that was the first release with Creation Engine but let's not forget that they also made and released Fallout 3 on Gamebryo - a 7 year old engine.
And released Obsidian's Fallout New Vegas (which is a great game despite the shit engine) in 2010 - when the engine was 9 years old.
If Prey 2 released in 2012, id tech 4 would've been 8 years old.
Now, yeah, Rage was released in 2011 on id tech 5, but id tech 5 was far buggier than 4 and Rage was hardly the best tech demo for it (despite id being a tech demo game company at that time).
Let's face it. This demo aged well.
It is the best use of id tech 4.
Bethesda wanted to buy out Human Head because they knew how to handle id tech.

Ever since I saw this game play, I wished it was a game set in the Blade Runner universe instead of a sequel to PREY. It's too different to be connected to PREY. Is it possible to re-name it and get it published somewhere else?

Sure Wolfenstein 2009 features sandbox map, but this is impressive.
I remember back at PAX West in Seattle. It was 2009 and I was in line to see the Prey 2 demo. It was one of the most glorious games I’ve ever seen. I also was able to score a T-shirt for the game. However, as time moved on, the realization of it becoming a reality quickly diminished as human head studio ceased development of it, and Bethesda took over.
So sad to see such an amazing idea not come into fruition. This game needs to happen within my lifetime.

Welcome to 2023, where a canceled game from 2011 looks better than most AAA full releases.
I'm back once again...holy shit does this still look better and more polished than most titles coming out today....the potential back then was ludicrous, and with today's tech it's unfathomable. It is one of the gaming's biggest crimes that this game and the talented team working on it, never got to see the light of day outside of these demo videos.
I honestly want this more than Fallout 4.

From what I can tell, there's nothing to leak. This was a mockup and not an actual demo. That's why it doesn't have an actual UI and everything happens so super slickly.

The parkour looks similar to dying light and this was made 2011 :O imagine what this game could be like now.

In the end, Zenimax is a company run by people who want to acquire and build a catalog of products and companies. They probably thought they could just get other people to finish Prey 2 without having to admit what they tried to do.
That could be why they didn't talk to the team for months without finding a successful replacement team. Then they missed some annual or quarterly projected profit window which shifted the title to a different type of project.
Look up everyone on the board of directors at Zenimax and their background. You'll see they're driven by the value of their business, not the value of a specific product. Look up how they treated 3rd party developers or their titles prior to 2012 and it's not that much better.

The story is convoluted, just like the dad of all these games - Half Life, which I never liked. If I want to read a calssic on hpilosophy in three tomes, I'd do that, not play a videogame.

Which even then makes no sense to me cause PREY 2 was gaining alot of popularity, which means big sales, but Bethesda had to throw a hissy fit that Human Head Studios didnt want to be bought out, so Bethesda cancelled their game in spite. And then the PREY we did get, the one by Arkane, it shouldnt have even used the name "PREY".....that was Bethesda giving Human Head the middle finger, absolute scumbags.

Prey2 could have been the cyberpunk 2011
As much as I love Prey 2017, the world needed this.
The sad funny thing is what became Prey 2017 would've still come out. It would've been titled something the team wanted and maybe been a stronger seller getting a sequel instead of using the Prey title like a bait n' switch.
prey 2017 is a good game, but its nowhere like prey and should be name alien shock or sum shit idk, just put some bioshock shit name on it and im sure it will sell better

I would absolutely love it if NoClip gets to interview Roundhouse Studios at some point to discuss what happened in detail. Not so sure they'll be allowed now that Microsoft have acquired Bethesda, but can always hope.

@@Andruthless Bethesda's games are full of bugs and unplayeable for the most part yet those pass the quality controls? What happened to prey was disguised by Bethesda as "not passing quality control standards" but that's not what really happened. Bethesda wanted to buy Human Head studio, and they couldnt manage. Since Human Head and Bethesda were just partners, that means that the profit made by Bethesda would be less than if they bought Human Head and had them as a studio working for Bethesda (basically, Human Head was working WITH Bethesda, not FOR Bethesda). That also meant that, since they were partners working on a project, the moment any side said it was over, it was over. Both sides had the rights to the game, because Human Head was developing it and Bethesda publishing it, so the moment Bethesda said it was cancelled, Human Head couldnt do anything about it.
Basically, it wasnt released because Bethesda got greedy and decided to just fuck Human Head over instead of allowing them to make profit off their creation.
Or do you think games like the TES or FO series are up to quality standards with all the many bugs shared accross all entries because bethesda keeps reusing the same engine and are too lazy to fix the bugs? It is clear that, despite the many bugs Bethesda games have, they are still playeable and enjoyable, so Prey 2 wouldnt have been any different. As a matter of fact, considering the reputation Bethesda has with bugs, IF Prey 2 had had any bugs, people wouldnt have minded at all, cause it would be totally excusable, as people have gotten used to Bethesda games being buggy messes on release and getting barely any better over the years and patches pile up.
We cant tell for sure 100% what the game was gonna be like, cause nobody has played it, but i can assure you that bugs are not something that would have kept bethesda up at night... it actually seems like they dont give a fuck to the point that its just imposible to think they dont implement them on purpose!

Besides, your argument isnt really valid, since the game wasnt valid we cant say it was bug free or had bugs, but we do have recorded gameplay of prey 2 without bugs and tons of recorded gameplay of cp2077 with bugs ;)
Until now I had only seen the cinematic. I think I died a little inside. I've lost even more respect for Bethesda.
Yeah, especially how they retaliated with the community's rejection of paid mods. They made free mods disable Fallout 4's achievements and released Wasteland Workshop that is essentially ripped off of mods from Nexus.

I'm positive this would've made it to the PC eventually, I mean the original Prey was a PC game as well so... yeah, it's a shame it got cancelled. My mind came back to this game after Silent Hills, man. Sad stuff.
2023 and I still hope that some day a build of this will somehow appear on the internet.

The new Prey looks interesting, but this is the game I wanted. I wanted a world of grime, crime, and grit. Instead Bethesda gave us a big ol "fuck you" and ditched this amazing project.

I mean, they release fucking Fallout 4, possibly one of the most shallow RPG games from bethesda that looks like it belonged on the PS2. The new reboot looks like Dead Space meets Bioshock meets SOMA. I'm sure it will be fine, it's just not the game that we all wanted.*
Also add in what might be inspiration from Prey by Michael Crichton. The creatures seemed to mostly be clusters of nanites. I think that may be what they were getting at with this new Prey, not necessarily being within the same series but more of a call to the book called Prey. If that turns out to be the case then it's not actually the same IP even if it has the same name, especially since the book Prey is much older than the game. And that would also make the horror element fit since Prey was a horror story itself. We may end up seeing these creatures, if they are nanites, mimicking humans to better hunt people, which would only confirm the inspiration from the book. We already see them mimicking inanimate objects (a chair) so maybe the next step is humans.

No, the game was an entirely different core concept. Where the game centered around aliens and spirits, the book centered around nanite swarms that could self replicate. In order to do this, they needed some base elements (they were created by molecular engineering), carbon being chief among them. They also had AI, and determined that humans were an excellent source of their base elements, all in one convenient package. So they evolved to hunt us, at first mimicking simple objects like tables and chairs, and then mimicking humans, became wolves in sheep's clothing.
That's why it was called Prey, because we were prey for the nanites. It's an excellent read, from the mind that spawned Jurassic Park. I highly recommend it.
