The best bet for a new Enders is if Kojima forms his own studio and makes it. Granted, it won't have the name, but as long as the gameplay and concept are there, that's all that really matters.
felman87 This is honestly my biggest hope for Kojima now. As bummed out as I am about Konami essentially shitting the bed, the thought of Kojima going off and making whatever he wants his getting my nipples erect.
felman87 His team won't have the rights to make it ZOE. It would have to be its own unique mecha game. A spiritual successor would be nice. Also Kojima hasn't even made a ZOE game before. It was his studio but ZOE2 was the product of Shuyo Murata (co-writer of MGS4, Peace Walker, main writer on Revengeance) as he was the writer, game designer, and producer of it. Hopefully he follows Kojima to wherever he goes. Probably will since he was screwed by Konami too.
felman87 I recently picked up the HD Collection and after playing it for a bit I was really sad that we'd never get another game in the series. I hadn't considered that possibility though and now I'm really hopeful. I think Kojima has such a big status in the industry that he would certainly be able to get a game funded but if he did turn to Kickstarter for something like this I'd probably end up on the street.
Strelok Kosugi I think Kojima carries such huge weight that a console manufacturer is probably funding his next studio right now. To not lock him down would be foolish.
In an alternate dimension where Konami wasn't batshit insane we could've gotten a new Zone of Enders collaboration made by Platinum games and Koji Pro. Oh reality, why are you so cruel sometimes.
The graphical style used in MGSV doesn’t necessarily reflect what the engine would always look like, just the way it was used there. I’m sure they could have made a more anime style game in it for ZOE. Just look at how the RE Engine powers both Resident Evil VII and Ghosts and Goblins, ones a realistic 3D survival horror game the other’s a 2D cartoon platformer game but they both use the same engine.
Turboviikinki No! Not yet. I hate konami as much as the the next guy (unless the next guy is kojima) but damn-it I need them to stay! I need them around! ........at least until someone buys the Metal Gear Rising, and Zone of the Enders IP's off them. After that, they can go castrate themselves.
ZoE blew my mind as a kid. I'll admit, I bought it primarily for the MGS demo, but I'll be damned if ZoE didn't steal the show for me. It was such a culture shock; not only did the game run at a frame rate so silky smooth that I only just then realized "frame rate" was even a concept, and the spatially baffling radial combat was so satisfying that I put down DMC for months. 2 was just everything I wanted out of the sequel (that damn hot/cold hunt aside). I thought it was going to be something big, you know? The general mecha importation flow had tapered substantially, but there was this slick and stylish mech action game from Kojima - /the/ Kojima - that had me hooked. It must've been about that time that videogames started getting "big" and publishers stopped funding risky IPs and just iterating. Fast forward a decade and apparently we can't even take Kojima for granted anymore. I just want ZoE 3, man. In summation: Good video. It made me mopey and nostalgic.
Oh my god those Enders Project concepts made me so moist, it's such a shame it'll probably never see the light of day. Biologically based mechs are one of the coolest and most unexplored tropes around imo
+Plebeian+ What will that Death Stranding game be? Will it be like a spiritual successor to SILENT HILLS, or a different kind of game? Also Allison Road has been revived under a new name.
I really hope Kojima makes a spiritual succesor, ZoE is the best mecha game i've ever played. The fighting is so smooth and satisfying while still being really simple...
Forget man, he was only the produce for the series. Should be a part 3 but, since Konami screw with that shit work in HD Remaster release the series in pretty much dead, Kojima now will make his own game so, nothing connect to games he work early, what now is Konami properity. (My english is bad, deal with it ;) )
Even if he only appears as producer, you can tell by the gameplay that there is a lot of Kojima in it. Best example being the use of the pressure control on the buttons to make the subweapons work in different ways.
I remember seeing an interview with Kojima where he said that konami was gonna let him focus on Zoe after Mgs5... so yeah Zoe 3 will likely never happen
Your wish may come true now. Kojima and Konami have squashed the beef due to Sony wanting a new Silent Hill game. Also, Sony wants to buy MGS, Silent Hill and Castlevania from Konami. Possibly Kojima can get his hands on ZoE.
@@theblackdeath8933 Sadly Konami shot down everything I said because they were rumors from a "Reliable" source. But Sony is still trying to buy those franchises. Also no news on ZoE.

Yoji Shinkawa inspired me to become an illustrator (a real one...sorry deviant art). It was all because of his work on ZOE 1. This is probably my fave game next to Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga. I have exquisite taste :p Nice little retrospective bro.
Just got to the HD collection after playing through all Kojima-made MGS games and I'd have to say that I think it would have been far better if Kojima worked on the Enders Project instead of MGSV. Kojima seemed really passionate about the project (even moreso than in recent MGS games), and considering the huge leap between 1 and 2, we could have gotten an incredibly mindblowing game that would have looked really beautiful on the Fox Engine. Also, thanks for mentioning the low price of the HD Collection on PS3. As soon as I finished the video, I bought this game for $12 and am currently having a total blast with The 2nd Runner.
This is the second 'Your Next Favourite' I've watched and the second time I'm going to look into a series because of it. I missed out on a lot of games back during the PS2 era, being a teenager without much money. There are a lot of games I wish I could go back in time and support at the time of release now.
Thanatos388 Canti from FLCL isn't really a mecha either, really. I mean, he eats Naota to get stronger, so its kinda like he's a pilot, but not really.
Dude you're splitting hairs. Isn't NGE a deconstruction of the mecha genre? I mean, I know the Eva's aren't technically mechs, but they might as well be on a general level, and should be talked about with other mechs and mecha anime.
I remember playing the first one as a young kid and absolutely loving it. I had no idea a second one was ever made until I seen it one day at EB Games, I was basically foaming at the mouth in excitement. Playing the 2nd ZoE cemented the series as one of my all time favorites. It's still heartbreaking to think that the sequel was cancelled in pre-production.
Anybody remember that period between 2002-2007 where Gonzo was doing 4 shows a year, and they almost all sucked? Then the 2008 recession hit and they all disappeared. Last Exile was good, that's all.
Zone of the Enders were hands-down my favorite non-rpg PS2 games. It was the first game that very truly 'next-gen' to me. The fast paced combat and smooth controls felt so revolutionary.
Extremely well made and one thing I will say... Hexadrive Studio's the company that stepped in to pick up the pieces and give the fans the Second Runner they deserve, did an absolutely phenomenal job that goes far beyond that of a regular patch. It's the kind of effort and commitment you could ever expect from a Team that truly appreciates the original game and has true knowledge of how to make use of the Playstation 3 hardware. Hell they changed the rendering just so the game have a such a heavy load on the GPU.
Just a bit of clarification: Enders is a slur used to describe people born outside of their home planet's sphere of gravitational influence. Yes, I read the ZOE1 manual, what of it?
This video was very enjoyable. Good work, my dude. However it re-broke my when you mentioned the 'on hold' ZoE project. There was nothing but sad feels after that. Maybe one day he'll make a game with that same art style and go under a different title since he left Konami. One can dream.
Maybe Hideo Konima should try to get the license/rights to make a *Neon Genesis Evangelion* game. That anime was an influence on Zone of the Enders, and I have a feeling that Hideo Kojima is a good fit for Evangelion (if you know what I mean).
I remember I randomly rented the first game and loved it, I knew it had its flaws, but it had me excited enough to pre order the 2nd game. That game is now one of my top games that I ever played. For years it was a game that friends would watch me play, just so they could see the high speed action in the hands of someone who knew how to use the system to its fullest.
Metal Gear is too well known and highly regarded to be a "Next Favorite". I would love to see the Drakengard/Nier, Lost Planet or maybe the Suda directed games (Killer7 and Flower, Sun and Rain specifically).
eandjproductions2 I'd be interested in seeing a video about El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, mostly because of the game's incredible aesthetics and interesting approach to the source material (Book of Enoch).
Zesty - The video would be like 17 hours long because Metal Gear universe is so large. It would be pain in the ass to make. Although I'd watch every damn second of it.
Thanatos388 The combat is mediocre at best, and the plataforming isn't nothing out of the ordinary either...but the art direction of El Shaddai is amazing, and it has good variety too, going from the psicodelic to the futurist in the matter of moments. I recommend playing it at lest once.
Just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you! This game was fast-paced, stylish, and highly under-appreciated. Glad to see you shined some of the spotlight it deserved.
Thanks for this in-depth video! I realize this was created before the recent PC release, but I hadn't heard of this game before and was intrigued by a demonstration. This gives me a good idea of what to expect the game to be like.
When I first saw this in my inbox I was honestly a little disappointed that this was the game you chose to do a video of. However, after watching it, I'm glad you did! The 2nd Runner looks like a pretty interesting game. I'm not sure if it's for me or not but I'll give it a rent in the future. Great video!
I just wanna let you know that I went out right this morning and bought the HD Collection because of this video, so... You're doin' good work there, Sir.
excellent video and now with the information hints on kojima's new game ideas and his whole "look at my logo and find a secret" gives me 25% hope boost
I've been meaning to pick up the Zone of the Enders HD Collection for a while, and this sold me on it, at least for 2nd Runner. Good video as usual, Hayden.
It's honestly a true shame that such a unique series had to meet such an abrupt end. Atleast Kojima tried to make the Enders Project but as expected Konami had to pull its usual stunt which is kill good content because why not? This video actually got me to go and pick up the HD Collection and i have to say i'm glad i saw this and got to enjoy such an interesting game series. I was like most MGS fans who knew about this series but never gave it a shot, now i feel like i was missing out on such a great story and gameplay system. Thanks for introducing me to Yakuza and Z.O.E, i love your content and keep up the excellent work.
The Vic Viper is so fucking cool. I'd love for you to do one of these on the Gradius series, it's so sad that there hasn't been a true Gradius game since the PS2 (Gradius V was effing amazing though). Zone of the Enders 2 is one of my favorite games ever though, so fun, and that Vic Viper fight with Leo is amazing.
Thank you very much for making this video, it is an awesome tribute. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner has to be among my all time Top 5 games I've ever played. Now that Kojima is officially off of Konami and the idea and concept for the 3rd game takes such a radical and novel departure for the series makes me hopeful one day it could be developed as a spiritual successor for ZOE through crowd funding.
I always thought there was so much potential in this franchise. I loved that one tid bit they through out in idolo how the humans who grew up on mars were exposed to less gravity so they were just flat out weaker than earthlings. Political oppression as well as physical inferiority, and yet they're leading OF development. Literal brains vs brawn. LEVs vs OFs.
This reminds me of the multiplayer part of "ZOE 2" always adhere to the "Dragonball Z - Raging blows 1-2" or "Rise of incarnates". I am almost certain that served the "ZOE" Multiplayer submission
I just picked up the HD collection from Gamestop for $12. Honestly I played Anubis ZOE back in 05 but I was borrowing it for the most part, and I really enjoyed it. Glad I'm finally getting around to beating it. But seriously we need more AAA Mecha titles like this in current gaming media.
Fuck man. You just resolved a major "there was this game but i forgot the name" moment that i had for YEARS. I remember this game and desperately wanted to remember it even tho i don't like the mecha genre that much.
Man... this game! I played the first one way back in the early 2000s. I borrowed a ton of games from a friend for PS2 and this was one of them. The funny thing is that I actually forgot what the game was called. I forgot a lot about it actually but watching this was a major jumpstart on my memory! Great video!
Excellent Video! I didn't know they fixed up ZOE 2 HD, glad I know that now. I've had my original PS2 copy for quite a while, but I think I'll get the HD collection to see how it looks on PS3 seeing as how it's really cheap these days.
One thing I really liked about Kojima was it refined the spacenoid/Earthling struggle that Gundam 0079 touched on. Despite the lack of representation, Earth never truly oppressed the colonists in the start of the series. The idea that Zeon was found by an megalomaniac who wanted to be written in the books as the great revolutionary. Compare this to Policenauts and Zone of the Enders where a simple food tax could cripple the way of martian life, or the cruel final fate of all spacenoids as they are forced to live in servitude to the people who was sworn to police their colony who now become influential men in power with few means to resist their rule.
As always you take your time to make an awesome video. Keep up the good work bro. I'm honestly hoping that since Koji pro was disbanded, that Kojima gets the rights to Z.o.e. and makes a new studio. A man can dream.
Great video man! :D The 2nd Runner is one of my all-time favourite games.:-) I actually discovered the series through a trailer for the first game on the extra disc that came with my copy of MGS2. I bought the first game and thought it was ok, but when I saw the trailer for The 2nd Runner I was blown away and knew I had to get the sequel (and the Beyond the Bounds song, because that shit is fantastic!). And it didn't disappoint.:-) It's one of the games I've completed the most times, and it's just as fun each time! :D I'm not too sad about the fact that we might not get any more Silent Hill or Metal Gear-games, because I think both those series have had the opportunity to show us their best. And while The 2nd Runner is great, I think that the series could have become even better.
OMG i never knew there was a sequel. I loved the first one when i played it as a kid, i feel like i missed out on the superior version of it. I would cream my pants if they'd release the HD collection on PC or on Vita.
This game series is such a gem. It sucks that it was always in Metal Gear's shadow. The weird menu music in the first game hooked me the moment it hit my ears.
The likely impossible idea of a ZOE game with the Platinum Games treatment both deeply saddens and intensely arouses me at the same time. This is an uncomfortable sensation.

In my restless dreams,
I see that game.
Zone of the Enders 3
You promised you'd release
that game some day.
But you never did.
Saw this game on the store shelf, it looked cool and was trying to find a good review for it. Thank you for the great overview.
+Brandon Dozier or maybe try to get the live action movie rights to Evangelion since he's friends with Guillermo Del Toro.
as usual, your attention to detail and montages are just so frikin good, makes me wanna go pick up the game and re-play it.
+alef321 done, picked up the game and replayed it! lol
Your Next Favorite - The Metal Gear Solid Series
Although I'd watch every damn second of it.
sofija1996 Damn, El Shaddai was that one game I really wanted to buy but it was so hard to find and I never did. It looked so good though.
Thanatos388 The combat is mediocre at best, and the plataforming isn't nothing out of the ordinary either...but the art direction of El Shaddai is amazing, and it has good variety too, going from the psicodelic to the futurist in the matter of moments. I recommend playing it at lest once.
Wow you really noted all the points about this series and ZOE 2 is my fav game of all time! Extremely well made video: Subscribed!
I'd kill for an Iron Man game like Zone of the Enders.
***** I'd rather have ZOE 3.
jgamer king
Neither is going happen, so it doesn't really matter.
***** True. Sad but True.
***** I think every Mecha game combat system should use the Zone of enders 2nd runner combat system. By far the best combat system in a mecha game.
zero11322
I haven't played many mecha games, but I would try out some more if they had ZOE2's style. There really isn't many games like it if any.
Zone of the enders will never die!
I just wanna let you know that I went out right this morning and bought the HD Collection because of this video, so... You're doin' good work there, Sir.
excellent video
and now with the information hints on kojima's new game ideas and his whole "look at my logo and find a secret" gives me 25% hope boost
I've been meaning to pick up the Zone of the Enders HD Collection for a while, and this sold me on it, at least for 2nd Runner. Good video as usual, Hayden.
Thank you so much for this video! I hope many more people find it and decide to pick up the ZOE games.
Exactly!
Also agreed, the flash step skill/sub weapon is amazing. I loved the Versus mode of this game, too.
The Vic Viper is so fucking cool. I'd love for you to do one of these on the Gradius series, it's so sad that there hasn't been a true Gradius game since the PS2 (Gradius V was effing amazing though). Zone of the Enders 2 is one of my favorite games ever though, so fun, and that Vic Viper fight with Leo is amazing.
there has not been anything like this since. I remember playing the endless missions for hrs trying to se how many waves I could hit.
Sad but true. :(
Thank you very much for making this video, it is an awesome tribute.
Another job well done. I had no idea that the Hd collection had these issues so thanks for the heads up.
I remember this game, and how I couldn't stop playing it until it was finished
Thanks for showing this. I can't believe I've never heard of it.
Excellent video. I remember anticipating this game's release and having it still exceed my expectations. A real hidden gem. RIP ZOE.
It is funny how I can see that kind of design for the unreleased Enders games being used in Death Stranding.
A love letter to one of my favorite childhood games, you sir have earned a sub!
This reminds me of the multiplayer part of "ZOE 2" always adhere to the "Dragonball Z - Raging blows 1-2" or "Rise of incarnates". I am almost certain that served the "ZOE" Multiplayer submission
This was a really incredible video, and I haven't even heard of these games before. I'm really glad I found your channel. You keep doing you.
The dynamic camera is what more games should strive for.
I would say that Metal Wolf Chaos was my favorite Mech game. Also, for Zone of Enders. I liked the references to it in Metal Gear AC!D.
Man... this game! I played the first one way back in the early 2000s. I borrowed a ton of games from a friend for PS2 and this was one of them. The funny thing is that I actually forgot what the game was called. I forgot a lot about it actually but watching this was a major jumpstart on my memory! Great video!
+Muhammed Zeict (Jackopo) Konami fucked it
next favorite? This is why I first got a PS2 and has always been one of my all time favorites!
Dude, I absolutely loved this game! It's so sad I never could finish it, I got so close to the end.
So sad we will never see a 3rd game. I had so many great memories with the 2nd runner.
Whoa the fact tat you mentioned the similarities of MML and ZoE makes my brain hurt. I used to plat those two games so much
... I'm honestly shocked that ZOE 2 wasn't a big hit. That game was just mind blowing and aged pretty well thanks to the semi cell-shading look
As always you take your time to make an awesome video. Keep up the good work bro. I'm honestly hoping that since Koji pro was disbanded, that Kojima gets the rights to Z.o.e. and makes a new studio. A man can dream.
2nd runner was so good, I wish this games had more sales back in the day
Great video man!
Oh yes Bahram Battleship I love that song. That song was my main song in MGO2 D:
Same here, its really damn adictive! ^^
And now I understand the people who want/wanted ZoE3.
OMG i never knew there was a sequel. I loved the first one when i played it as a kid, i feel like i missed out on the superior version of it. I would cream my pants if they'd release the HD collection on PC or on Vita.
The closest modern mecha game that matches ZOEs speed is Armored Core 4/fA, and even then that feels way more grounded than ZOE.
It's like you're the only one left from gather your party.
Zone of the Enders Pachinko coming soon. Yugioh Pachinko coming soon. Snatchers Pachinko coming soon.
RIP ZOE
and most importantly:
RIP ZOEHD Vita ;__;
Excellent showcase of ZoE! Really enjoyed this. Would love to see you do more high octane action games!
this is the best looking game of its time like 10 of the 10 best looking game
This game series is such a gem. It sucks that it was always in Metal Gear's shadow. The weird menu music in the first game hooked me the moment it hit my ears.
The likely impossible idea of a ZOE game with the Platinum Games treatment both deeply saddens and intensely arouses me at the same time. This is an uncomfortable sensation.
