Making a Line Drawing from your Reference Photo using GIMP

  • This tutorial video shows how you can use a photo editing programme to create a line drawing from your reference photo.
I use GIMP but any good photo editing programme such as Photoshop will have a way of doing a similar thing.
You can find out more about GIMP & download the latest version for free here www.gimp.org/ however the newer versions do not have the same layout as the version 2.8.22 that I used for this demo. You can still download that version here www.gimp.org/downloads/oldsta...

Wow! This is the first Gimp tutorial I've seen that was in an easy to follow, "only what you need" format. You have a very pleasant voice and enunciation, and you go slow enough for a raw beginner like me to be able to keep up. So many of the turorials out there go rapid fire, darting the cursor all over the screen, and talk about 2 or 3 different ways to accomplish each step. I had given up on Gimp for converting photos of my cat to sketches, but I can't wait to get started on your method. Thanks!

Thanks for such a clear demonstration of how to convert a reference photo to a line drawing. I know there are several ways to accomplish this using GIMP but yours is very concise. I'm a water colour painter so this will be put to use shortly.

Do you have another tutorial where you have done this? Just the outline. Or can you tell me the settings I would use using the method of this tutorial to get an outline.

I wish this worked for me but I have a different version of gimp, 2.10 and it doesn't work the same for some reason, and I am pretty good at doing this sort of thing which is a bit frustrating. google pixlr editor. pretty much exactly like this. you don't download the program, you just use 'editor' online
open the reference photo from computer
      go to adjustment tab---choose 'desaturate'
right click on 'layers' (right side of screen)-- choose 'duplicate'
go back to adjustment tab-- choose 'invert'
on right side layer area--'toggle layers' button----choose 'add' from drop down menu
go to filter tab--choose 'gaussian blur'
move the sliders til you are satisfied (pretty much the same as the gimp instructions in this video)
right click on layers----choose 'merge down'
go back to adjustment tab-----choose 'levels'
move the sliders until you have the detail you want. (i try to have the faintest lines)
go to the file tab--- choose 'save'
and there ya have it. very easy to use.
one issue i had using chrome, this editor needs to use flash, so make sure you have 'ask me' setting in browser for flash.
      hope this helps

Am I old fashioned...I really think a piece of artwork should start with your own drawing with all its imperfections...it is the world through your eyes and hands

Yes & no Liz. I am like you, one of the 'old fashioned' crew so to speak. I drew from an early age & went to art college so I learned how to draw, sketch life studies, movement, composition, colour theory etc. Some of the tips tools that I teach are simply to enable those that have no idea where to start, or do not have the time to learn to draw the traditional way a means to be creative. If drawing someone else's pet then 99% of the time it would be from photos, something which took me a long time to get my head around. When I draw my own dogs I sketch them but not being able to creates a barrier for some people who simply want to create. There is no right or wrong but as long as we all create then it is all good :)

@Barbara Holmes there is no such word in the creative world as 'cheating'. And I do not abide by those that use the word either if it stops others from creating. I went to art college, I studied & worked hard for many years. This video shows people how to use a tool to create a basic line drawing from their reference photo. As I explained, this is to aid people in simplifying their reference. Not everyone has the time nor patience to learn to draw so why should creating a base image like this to work alongside your reference be seen as cheating? And how dare you insinuate that I do not draw. You obviously know nothing about my work. I feel sorry that you judge all of these people as cheats & would wish them to not create at all unless they do things your way. It infuriates me that people take the time to judge others like this, and saddens me too. Even the old masters used Lucida & other methods to transfer line drawings. I bet Michelangelo would be the leader of using apps in the modern age! :D

@@mikek4610 It’s not talent that is required, it’s learning drawing skills and applying them. “Practice makes perfect”, so to speak.
But perfection is not required. It’s the differences in how artists see the world and interpret it that makes art so interesting.
One of my instructors used to say that we have 10,000 bad drawings in us, so we’d better start drawing a lot now to get them all out! LOL
Besides, learning how to successfully paint and draw in color and doing it well, (as in getting an appealing finished piece of artwork) is a lot more difficult than learning basic drawing skills.
So if you feel you don’t have “talent” for drawing then you will soon be disappointed that you may find that you have even less for creating work in color using traditional art media (like color pencil, pastels, watercolor, gouache, egg tempura, oil paint, markers, etc).
Drawing is a basic skill and there are many TH-cam videos on learning how, let alone library books and other free online tutorials.
I highly suggest learning how to draw as it will give you a great sense of accomplishment along with a great skill that you can use as a foundation to build and strengthen your color art work with.
And once you learn how to interpret what you see into creating a drawing, you will be able to then use those skills as a jumping-off point to successfully create things from your imagination and make them believable.
It opens up a whole new, exciting world of what you can pursue artistically and how well you can convey it to your audience.

Hi, I am not sure how much more I can do to show this more clearly, sorry. I went through it slowly, and repeated the process & made sure to show & say exactly what I was clicking on. I often see people demonstrate things on here & I have to stop every couple of seconds as they do not talk you through things so I do understand. I often hit the pause button, carry out the last action someone shows me on here & then hit play & then pause again. I will see if there is any way I can make my cursor larger or brighter for the next video though

I will answer you here as your email added that it was sad thing that I did not answer you yet. My out of office on my email has been on for the last few days as I have been away having surgery on my back. I shouldn't need to explain this here but as you could not wait for me to be recovered enough to be back online today, as explained in the out of office message, I am responding here. The only reason I am awake now is because I am in a lot of pain but your impatient message was the first thing I saw :( Please understand that I am just one person working very hard behind the scenes and I actually have about 900 messages, mails and comments to catch up with this week. As explained in the description of the video, this is an older version of GIMP and I did include a link to that version in there. As newer versions get released they change how you access different tools and I apologise but I simply do not have time to follow every update to make fresh videos. There are other versions and programmes that can be used, people here in the comments have shared which ones. The link to the older version is still going through so it is still available. The version you need is 2.8.22 and this is the one in this video from over 4 years ago
