If they combined this and a VR headset into a sick looking motorcycle helmet type thing where you're completely immersed in a game then yeah but those two should not be two separate pieces 💀
Honestly, my biggest problem with this is it doesn't look like it'll be comfy for when I'm singing loudly or shouting. It looks like it hugs a person's face to the point that moving your mouth a bunch would be very bothersome.
It's hard to really think of a better, socially-accepted, design for this. They could go for a look similar to Bane's mask, but that presents a problem of restricting your breathing.
this is more like a "i live in my parents house and am not allowed to scream" product than a "i own a lot of extra money and want to prove my wealth in public" product
The office I work in has a sound box that you can move to during a call or meeting to be loud in there without disturbing others, but we only have one and I’m sure this is way cheaper. I want to speak loudly for the person I’m having a meeting with, but I don’t want to disturb my coworkers. I could totally see myself using this

New deepthroat model will be launching next year, it puts the Mic directly in your throat and blocks your mouth with a ball gag, I'd just wait for that model if that's the only thing about this you dislike.
I mean text to speech is a thing and is probably a lot cheaper or free instead of just wasting money on something like from the video and probably more useful than the last two braindead people sharing the same brain cell thinking that they're better than *insert username* while they don't even have a social media or any social life
the insurance call center my mother works for just bought a bunch of these and is now forcing people to sit two to a desk. No more concerns about customers overhearing other phone calls.
The idea of having a private conversation like this isn't the worst thing in the world, I'm kinda hyper aware when people are listening to my calls and such, which can be off putting. But the design literally looks like a ball gag.
With COVID, it seems kind of interesting to model a microphone with a face mask design. If this was more inconspicuous, you could definitely get away with it and it would actually be quite nifty.
I actually agree. I’m often travelling for work, and I find myself talking about confidential matters regarding my company, and if it’s true that w/o context risks are minimum, to have a way to have private conversations…it would be cool. And if it became practice common areas would be mor quite 😂
to be any good it needs to cover the nose too at the bare minimum. Just like face masks the air and vibration from your voice goes out from your nose too. That's why you sound funny if you pinch close your nose while talking
It’s not a bad idea per se, I’m sure a lot of us would appreciate a mic that lets you freely talk loudly during late hours. I’m just afraid that this is not the way to do it

I think the core idea definitely has merit. I know a streamer who had problems with playing horror games in stream because their neighbors would get mad.
Charlie you gotta buy one and record a Podcast episode with it. If the sound quality is amazing it might be great for people that don't have a recording room.
I could use one of these for late night gaming and team chat, without waking up the partner sleeping next to me. Silly but it'd make for a plausible use for it too. If only the product was a COOLER design than this feed bucket of a thing. Something like a gas mask design or a spray painters mask.
To be fair, they never said it was gonna completely block sound😭It’s just dampening, so unless you are in the room with the person, you won’t be able to hear it.
The absurd design aside , the concept itself is nice for those that really need it such as loud households or having to talk for a work meeting while your s.o or your child is resting , even if it's just for gaming the intention seems good on the surface to have the freedom to converse without bothering others around you. But they should really work on the design more...making it look more like a facemask would work since it would be really customizable then and bane's mask seems like a banger idea from charlie.
The reason for its design is because it has a large sponge-like cover on the inside that helps to muffle your voice so it doesn't sound all distorted, as well as to serve as an easy to remove and clean part, since your mouth is undoubtedly going to be spraying all kinds of germs all over that thing. You can't really achieve that with a mace-mask design.
Callcenteres/Support can really benefit from this because whenever you either get a call or need to call support you can hear people talking in the background...
@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639 honestly I thought about it as well though there should be a way to isolate it around the edges or around the mouth then spread out the microphone and other details through the mask itself rather than extend it , it would end up quite thick but should be bit less than half of what it currently is

3ft gummy worms are cool and all, but this gizmo has actually existed since the 1940s and is called the stenomask. it has seen regular use every day since its invention in the 1940s. see the courtroom stenographer talks into it as the courtroom trial stuff is happening and then later they type out a transcript based on it rather than some jank-ass keyboard. it's super useful! this device doesn't even credit the original though, presumably because it's not cutting edge that they saw one of these ancient devices and put bluetooth and a couple straps on it.
As someone who games at night and tried not to disturb my sleeping family this doesn’t seem like the worst idea. But the design makes me rather just buy a couple foam pads and sound proof my room
Throat mics are already a thing. You can basically whisper and still come through. This could also work with a more normal face mask with a mic in it, to let you talk with some privacy, maybe you couldn't shout into it and expect privacy but the cloth itself would muffle you a bit for normal speaking volume.
why do that when the stenomask exists already and has existed since the 1940s? it's not a new technology at all, the people behind it have simply invented putting straps on the thing!
The idea sounds nice for the late night gaming sessions, because I always forget to keep it down and I'd wager the neighbors next to my apartment are probably not the happiest about it.
I wish I had something I could record vocals for tracks with, where literally anywhere I was nobody could hear me. It's like a soundbooth. The concept isn't as silly as he makes it out to be, but the device certainly is.
I think the concept for this is actually really good, but I think it would be less ugly if it was made into a mask instead of this weird protruding box… and then trying to keep it clean would be a nightmare, especially since a lot of people say they’d love to use this for gaming, which means they’d be breathing into it for hours a day every day, so I can’t imagine it’d be good for the electronic bits or very sanitary either. If it were tweaked a little though I could see this being really useful!
Agree. Think of what’s the most common mask these days - a regular surgical one. Seems like common sense to model it off that so you don’t look so out of place.
As someone who was studying music as vocalist, this actually wouldve been so helpful when practicing at home or at school in a practice room. I was always super self-conscious of people hearing me while I was practicing so something like this actually might've taken that stress away from me
Someone just needs to make a whole ass helmet at this point. Filter the air, have music all up in there, augmented glass over the front. It can't possibly go wrong.
You’re onto something.. I mean, sure- I’ll buy a destiny helmet to game if it includes these feature. Gonna scare the hell out of me if someone (doesn’t even need to)silently sneaks up behind me
I was looking into this while living at home because i wanted to have teletherapy appointments but i couldnt because my dads room was next to mine. Soundproofing my room would raise concerns from my parents
i've heard of stenomasks, the tool used in courtrooms everywhere. it's this exact product but not bluetooth because that would be dumb and also not strapped to a face because that would also be dumb. courtroom stenographers use them to transcribe court proceedings faster than typing! it's super useful.
i kind of wish more people probably heard of this because i'm tired of saying this to everyone who sees this actually useful product and puts it on blast. these things have been around since the 1940s, give em a break!
it's actually going to be like a stenomask because that's what this technology is, it's a stenomask from courtroom stenographers who transcribe court happenings not through their fast little fingers on a weird little keyboard but through their mouth connected to this exact thing. they've been doing it since the 40s
if they pair this with the goggles and have the entire thing looks like a futuristic gasmask or something I would totally get it, since I'm a fan of gasmasks. Also, since most online environments are so toxic donning a gasmask before going in would fit the theme perfectly.
Yeah at least a gasmask is cool epically feature realistic gasmask looks even better this product is ugly and weird other future realistic gasmask is weird but cool
Here cool gas mask design a gas mask with 1 respirator on one side preferably the left sense left looks better for me make the glass slick and look good and make it thin and somehow make it sound proof and add a microphone system in the gasmask so you can tactically talk to someone Plus it protects your eyes from diseases and splashes so make it water proof. And if we’re talking futuristic like legit from the future make it thats its water proof and you can dive with it and it had water drinking system inside it with fluids that gives you the protein and nutrients you need to live and make it fog proof and an cooling system built in and the gas mask is fully bulletproof
If I wasn't broke I would already have ordered one of these. Not only am I self conscious about being heard when I record a video, but there is NO noise isolation where I live. Literally I can hear my neighbors talking right now and they live across the street. I do not like to be heard when I'm gaming or recording it affects the way that I talk and triggers my anxiety to know that they can hear me. I don't mind being laughed at on the internet but it's embarrassing when I say something and then I can hear my neighbors talking shit about me and laughing. One time I was having fun not thinking about it and someone threw a rock at my window. I wish it didn't affect me but I can't help it. For me this is an ideal product and I hope they're still around when I manage to save enough money to order one.
it's actually been used in courtrooms across the globe since the 1940s, it's called a stenomask and it's super duper useful for quick and accurate transcriptions!
I fail to see how this is stupid. You never played online games with your teammates saying they can't talk because it's the middle of the night??? Also "just soundproof your room" is even dumber. Soundproofing is extremely expensive, definitely not affordable or even doable for someone renting an apartment. Charlie is being really out of touch with this one.
I've wanted an item like this for several years - I game at 1-5am, in a full household, because of the timezone shift with my friends. Making it so you can play and converse normally in the middle of the night is legitimately useful. The spitguard thing is a notable criticism.
Yeah hygiene would be my biggest issue. Your breath has natural moisture, and in a small (tiny really...) enclosed space like that, it wouldn’t take long for it to become musty and disgusting. You’d be breathing your own manky breath over and over... sounds grim.
uhhh well...maybe like instead of a muzzle lets make it a mask you absolute dolt. imagine a neoprene type mask that you just wear like a normal facemask that picks up only your voice at a reasonable volume maybe the microphone input not so directly on top of the mouth, and the main dampening bit will be achieved by wearing a mask cause I'm soft spoken asf and when I'm wearing a mask no one can hear me.
Counterpoint: a lot of equipment in videogames looks stupid even in futuristic settings, you often have to sacrifice fashion for utility or vice versa. Reality and fiction aren't too far apart.
@@blujaebird The problem with fanny packs is that pockets are more convenient and backpacks are more versatile. If something is small enough for pockets, those are definitely the better choice. If they're too big for pockets, you're going to need a backpack for other cases anyways so just use that. Aside from extremely niche scenarios, when would you want to buy and use a fanny pack over either your pockets or a backpack?
Low key, I immediately thought of the noise cancelling device for vocalists. Except that has an actual use, because if you're on your way to an audition and have to do vocal warm ups in public, you can actually do full voiced warm ups, instead of ineffective, under your breath ones you might do so you don't disturb others
There's no reason you can't also use this for that purpose. Just because there's a microphone in it doesn't mean that it can ONLY be used for calls. if you need noise muffling, then put it on without connecting the microphone.
The worst part of having that combined with a full VR headset on is that somebody might walk into you and think you got the weirdest Cyberkink 2099 while you won't even notice them looking at you. You will maybe never know this but the person will always have the mental image of your cyborg face. It's even worse if you actually did something kinky alone in your room.
Yeah other than the appearance this actually has a few super valuable uses, I personally have a lot of trouble speaking to my doctors/lawyers/anything important, on the phone at home because my parents will deliberately eavesdrop on everything.
@@plebeian3671 The question remains if it actually works for its intended purpose. Honestly, Charlie did not really make many interesting points this video. Well, but like Charlie mentioned, how fucking loud are you going to be to the person you're talking to when you're like one step away from eating the microphone?
@@MokohiChan You could whisper into the phone and they’ll still hear you, not to mention whoever you’re on the phone with most definitely won’t hear you. ts actually useful, I remember back in college dorms I always wanted to play and chat with friends at night but I couldn't because my roommate want to sleep so this device would help in similar situation
Charlie forgot about kids (sleeping), roommates, wives sleeping (because gamers play at night after work duh) Its still stupid looking but its actual intended use makes since. Don't know how many times guys in discord be like "sorry i got to whisper the kids are sleeping in the other room". Or the friend joins in but has a family constantly yelling in the backround. I see the need and use case, however it looks stupid.
So very niche situations while advertising like everyone should have it. The amount of people this would actually be useful for is very very low and then for a very limited amount of time
Could also see it being useful if you are a busy work person who just happens to be out enjoying themselves when suddenly work calls, but their example is terrible since the guy wasn't wearing headphones or anything during his call in this " noisy" place lol. Also since he had his laptop I would assume he was either at a coffeehouse or as Charlie surmised was prepared to have a meeting in a noisy place which at that point is just bad business lol.
I love waking up and cooking a nice breakfast just to sit down and listen to Charlie say just the most moist metaphors and similes in the entire English language.
Yeah but good luck getting anyone to voluntarily wear that thing, thats why its so stupid lol. The use for it isnt whats dumb, its the device itself being goofy
Actually something like this is a really good idea if implemented correctly. My gaming studio also has a friend's setup in there. We play together but we're struggling to tune our mics correctly so voices don't get picked up by the other mic
it's actually already been implemented correctly. it's called a stenomask and they've been used in courtrooms since the 1940s to make easier, faster, more accurate transcripts.
As a father who starts gaming at midnight when the wife and kids are asleep: I would absolutely buy this. I would never wear it in public, but in the middle of the night when I'm by myself, yup.
Gotta agree with you, as someone who also typically games and chats at night when others are sleeping, this is lowkey kinda convenient for that specific application... If you're taking calls in a building with thin walls, and don't want anyone to hear your voice, this is perfect...
honestly i think critical is just completely wrong on this one, Im sure he has never looked into soundproofing a room before, it takes thousands of dollars to achieve a "good" result, where as this device achieves exactly what im trying to block any way, which is the sound i make in vr while chatting while its late. or if im gaming late at night
I'm super quite when I game by myself. Whenever I do get loud, it's usually because of my friends. I almost never yell when I'm gaming solo, I'm just too absorbed in what I'm doing to really care to say or do anything. It was designed in Japan for the Eastern world because families there live in a small apartment (approximately 200 - 400 square feet). Even if I talk quietly, it is still very loud at night.
The only scenario they showed where it looked fine was meetings in public, but that would require it having good voice isolation and not looking goofy as hell lol.
Okay, you get the Mutalk muzzle, you put on an older VR headset that's super-chunky and covers like 60% of your face, and you put on a pair of LED cat-ear headphones, and you got yourself a cornerstone in a brave new pornhub tag.
What it's aiming to do makes sense. A lot of us are most likely still living with our parents (because it's hard to afford a home right now unfortunately) who are trying to sleep at night, so for people who stay up late talking with online friends this kind of tech would definitely be handy. Except I'd rather soundproof my room and use a better microphone than to wear this muzzle from a dystopian future.
I’ll echo a number of sentiments here when I say I would actually find the core concept of this useful. I used to play a bit of Apex late at night with my friends and the apartment echoed quite easily with all the laminate floors so I would occasionally disturb my fiancée now wife. Even the default mics on headsets need to be cleaned, no matter how loud or quietly you talk since it's a sponge that accumulates all the mucus etc on it. But the idea is really great. With COVID, it seems kind of interesting to model a microphone with a face mask design. If this was more inconspicuous, you could definitely get away with it and it would actually be quite nifty.

Throat mics are already a thing. You can basically whisper and still come through. As a father who starts gaming at midnight when the wife and kids are asleep: I would absolutely buy this. I would never wear it in public, but in the middle of the night when I'm by myself, yup.
Same
Gotta agree with you, as someone who also typically games and chats at night when others are sleeping, this is lowkey kinda convenient for that specific application... If you're taking calls in a building with thin walls, and don't want anyone to hear your voice, this is perfect...
Depends on the price tbh
I see the use but it looks very uncomfortable. If they could make it shaped like a mask rather than a cup, then maybe this could be a decent product.
honestly i think critical is just completely wrong on this one, Im sure he has never looked into soundproofing a room before, it takes thousands of dollars to achieve a "good" result, where as this device achieves exactly what im trying to block any way, which is the sound i make in vr while chatting while its late. or if im gaming late at night
I'm super quite when I game by myself. Whenever I do get loud, it's usually because of my friends. I almost never yell when I'm gaming solo, I'm just too absorbed in what I'm doing to really care to say or do anything. If I get mad I just get off and scroll through Charlie's channels to watch some quality content.
At this point they may as well make a full daft punk style helmet that combines a full spacial VR headset, noise canceling headphones and this noise muffling thingamajig, that seems like a solid peice of tech
You’d almost be able to replicate a sensory deprivation environment
Seriously, why haven’t they made a vr helmet yet? Weight distribution would already allow for higher specs
That's actually a really good idea, it'd be easy to put on, weight distribution could be better, and more importantly, the extra material could be used to hold more powerful hardware. Kind of makes you wonder why it hasn't been tried yet, because on paper it seems pretty good
6:38 The look of pure discomfort in this dude's eyes is wild. He might be smiling under that bluetooth ball gag, but his eyes are screaming for help more than anything else.
Honestly, this could be good for two people that need to communicate around heavy machinery like a helicopter or a drill rig
My goodness, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that haha. That’s the only useless purpose.
That is what throat mics are for, this is a absolutley useless product
They already make hearing protection headphones that only cut out noises above a certain decibel level
bros never heard of a headset
throat mics exist, tank crews for example have used them for decades
I can already see someone using it to kidnap somebody
When he started talking about how gross the mask would get. I could only imagine what these people would do if they had to sneeze.😂😂😂
You can control your sneezes pretty easily. If you feel one coming you just have to push the tip of your nose up for a second or two and it will be suppressed
@@penguinexpert6581 bruh I had a job where I had to wear a whole face mask for chemicals so I could not remove it and push my nose. Sneezing in it felt like the most disgusting thing ever. I don’t work there anymore.

Me too. I honestly just don't want my whole family to be interrupted by me yelling.
The idea is great, but the execution is less than stellar.
Apartment dweller here…I also scream when gaming cause I’m autistic. So yeah practical in that application for sure.
*Nah now I can yell as loud as I want when I finish*
@@iplaywithrocksforfun no, you scream because you're a loud, angry asshole. My best two best friends have autism and they manage to not shriek like a banshee at 2am during games. Instead of buying a ridiculous face diaper to scream in, why not consider tackling the root of the problem and seeking therapy or something? Stop trivializing autism by using it as an excuse for an issue that you are clearly self-aware about.
As a foreigner living in Japan, I won't have to worry about getting a note on my door because I'm being too loud, or having the grandma's giving me the death stare while I leave my apartment.
Is living in japan really any different from other countries?
@@Trollrijas yes, they're really fckn weird
@@kingghidorah8106 technically all native native people are different and weird in comparison to where you're from unless the countries are very similar.
@@Trollrijas their issue is really cause the walls are pretty thin so you can hear neighbors' sounds louder.
In all fairness, they aren't using thick walls for the house.
The worst product I've ever seen legitimately advertised was when(I believe) Lysol sold an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser, which in of itself is not a bad idea if it were marketed towards people with certain disabilities or severe arthritis who might have trouble getting sanitizer out of a bottle, but they advertised it as a way to not get germs on your hands. You know, the same hands that are going to be sanitized after you rub sanitizer on them? Just a really weird marketing ploy and I've never seen them anywhere so I guess it didn't sell well.
As a smooth brained VR gamer (not metaverse nonsense) who stays in hotels for work multiple nights a week I'll admit my anxiety over bothering other guests through the thin walls has me at least intrigued in this.
So I feel like you might be exaggerating it's uselessness because of it's memeable design.
Don't be a cuck man. Don't do it.
If its useful for you and you want it you should get it. You shouldn't be shamed out of doing what's good for yourself. Also I bet every single big name mocking this product has the privilege of living alone or with a SO
For sure, I know it looks absolutely ridiculous, but it does what it advertises. I have quite a few friends in Japan who have ordered this and tested it out at events and say it works. I play a lot of VR with friends, and end up being way too loud because I'm kinda in another world for a little. I see why people would be bashing the look of it, but being considerate of neighbors, dorm mates, or even family is not a stupid purchase. I don't understand why it's getting so much hate for a product that genuinely solves a problem.
it's not a bad idea if you live in a house with other people and you want to talk in the middle of the night or its something you don't want them to hear
@@HawooAwoo Right, it's kind of like how everyone pretends VR is all about Zuckerberg's metaverse even though I don't know any VR enthusiast who uses it. People just latch onto what's easy to hate because it's fun, even if it's at the expense of the actual good parts of a community.
Charlie is very much downplaying how thin apartment walls are. This would be huge for me at night.
Edit - I don't believe Charlie is at all "detached from reality" as some of the comments of this say. I just don't think he knows how thin some apartments walls are and how much noise suppression can help in these situations :)
Right dude? Being able to be as loud as I want without waking up my roommates sounds like a dream come true. I don’t care how silly I look within the confines of my dorm. Also when he said to just soundproof the room instead I actually loled, like does this man know how much that costs??
@Mathews he's hit that point where he's so rich he's become detached to the reality outside his income bracket.
I feel like in general people who don't understand the produce either live alone or live in a larger house where they have dedicated space. Does it look stupid? Yes. Well it let me play social VR games later into the night without worrying about disturbing others.
Moist also mentions at the end that other products exist that would help instead. Like what exactly? Unless you shills exponentially more for something like a sound booth, you aren't getting anything similar other than similar face mask mic products.
@@polo619652 bingo bro dudes incredibly arrogant if he truly believes he’s got the answers and can’t possibly conceptualize a reality other than his own where inconveniences exist

Honestly the idea is solid, but I don’t think it works in practice.
8:10 At that point just make a VR helmet, there’s no point in having separate headphones, goggles and a muzzle (for some reason)
For the record, in america aor similar countries, voice leakage isn't an issue at all, but in (just for example) japan, the walls of the average apartment are absurdly thin, along with a more formal and proper culture, meaning voice leakage is actually a huge issue there, and products like this are genuinely helpful.

This is also very useful for abusive households. I know many teens that would like to be able to talk to friends without their parents hanging unto every word they say.
i think a better solution would be to not be in an abusive household, a parent that is that insistant on listening to you would probably be thinking that you are talking about THEM and dont want to be heard. Instantly discarded
Not to mention, this is just an expensive muzzle to mask the sounds of an child being abused

Same, I work from 11-20 so I play with friends at night, and sometimes I could get loud in a heat of the moment, especially since I myself use headphones and already got complaints

I think it could be usable when your roommate is trying to sleep and you're gaming in the middle of the night.
Id rather just speak low
It's essentially a stenomask, it may look silly but I see potential use cases for it if you want to talk to your friends at night without disturbing others. It's not meant to be worn in public lol.
Indeed. It's the design that's the issue not the invention.
It just looks so comically absurd. I'd feel ridiculous even wearing it alone.
Yeah I’d actually want this knowing that my parents can heard me through two floors in my normal talking tone
I’m an attorney and while there are several ways court reporters can create records of hearings these days, some use something like this, except this version is cordless. I guess what they use is referred to as a stenomask?
I could also see some applications for my work. Sometimes I need to have confidential conversations with clients when others (judge, prosecutor, public, etc) are around… but I couldn’t ever bring myself to strap this on my face in public 😂

So I’d have to make a very conscientious effort to stifle my call outs in more intense situations, but with a product like this, maybe not with this exact design persé, I wouldn’t have had to worry about that. I hope that something like this continues to be workshopped
Same !!! And apex too !!!
There are more than 1 solutions to fix the issues you mention, a fucking muzzle ain’t it
Exactly my thoughts, helps when you share a small space with someone but still need to do calls
Normal adults wouldn't get this, but parents would totally force their children to use these so they play quietly, and japanese audiences would totally rock these since they already are used to wearing masks and care a lot about quietness.

Even the default mics on headsets need to be cleaned, no matter how loud or quietly you talk since it's a sponge that accumulates all the mucus etc on it. But the idea is really great.
