This video really connected with me. I've got the decked out set of clubs. But recently purchased some persimmons and MacGregor syncrolite's and old MacGregor putter. I haven't felt such enjoyment on the course for years. Simplicity and enjoying the game
I recently came back to my Jack Nicklaus Muirfields from playing Mizuno MP-32s for a few years. There is nothing like the top-line of the Muirfields. They instill confidence. I still use persimmon woods (Citations) and a maple strata-block Ping Eye II 5-wood. There is no feeling like pure-ing a blade. Now you're golfing, where the destination (scoring) is superseded by the journey (that feeling). I've never played with cavity-backs, but I'm told it's like swimming with your socks on.
As a junior, I had these irons from 2 - SW. I also have the matching blade putter and a MacGregor tour bag. I wore these clubs out. They were unforgiving, but magic when you struck them right. I also had a Ram Golden Ram TomWatson Grind 1 iron blade. It has a similar curved muscle back shape and was only slightly wider than a golf ball. I kept the clubs and I was watching your video because I just regripped them today so they feel as good to hold now as they were to play years ago.
I found a few custom MacGregor Irons that are copies of the Muirfield at a Goodwill. I just bought the 8 iron and took it to the range and compared it to a some 8 irons from my other sets - including a Hogan Apex 1999 Apex and this iron design felt the best. It took me back to when I used to regularly play the VIP irons. Wonderful clubs.
The persimmon 3 and 5 wood from my first full set of clubs (Titleist tour models, from around 1979) stayed in my bag for decades, through multiple club changes, well past the point of obsolescence, because I just loved em. I eventually moved them out of the bag but I definitely still have em, just in case.
Your best review to date. I’ve been hoping you’d get around to reviewing this club and the wait was definitely worth it. I have the 5 iron of this model in my collection and happen to think it is the most aesthetically pleasing golf forging ever made by this company. I sometimes get this club out and leave it on my desk just to look at it during the day, admiring its tactile shape and perfect symmetry. I think this was the pinnacle of MacGregor forging where aesthetics and functionality fused perfectly.
Macgregor is back! I want to get the tourney custom muscle II. And I love your videos, I totally related to what you said. My first few clubs were by Lynx, then I got a used set of Titleist DCI. Irons with the degrees written on them and unique leather style grips. Although I sold them and use brand new consumerism clubs, I am now a fan of retro/classics & collectibles. And if the shafts & grips don’t excite me perhaps g getting fitted
Those old Macgregor blades are beautiful and I absolutely agree with you about connecting with your clubs. I have a Ping B60 putter which I love - it's too short for me and the grip is probably too thin too but I love it. I've had that nearly 20 years. My irons are old Pings which are over 20 years old and are as good as new and are a joy to use.
Right now I have a five year old Titleist driver that I connect to. Love it. During the 80s and 90s I played the Hogan Apex irons. Had a great Apex shaft which were the lightest around which I preferred. My son has them now so I can borrow whenever. Hogan didn’t make clubs that were easy to hit so those blades were a challenge. Also played a set of Wilson staff blades. Felt a little softer than the Hogans
I know what you mean about connecting with clubs. I'm selling my Ping G25's and going back to the all time classic Ping Eye 2's. I just love the look and feel of them.
BITD I had a MacGregor persimmon Eye-O-Matic 2 wood. I refinished it and rewound the string around the hosel and played it for years and years. It's loft was just a bit more than that of a standard driver and i could hit it off the tightest lies with no problem. It was the only wood I carried. BTW, i recently purchase a 2-pw 1981-84 set of "The Haig" (Walter Hagen) irons, and have just put a low-ball bid in on a set of MacGregor Muirfield 1-pw irons. We'll see how they compare if I end up getting them.
MacGregor actually made this iron set forged AND cast iron. With the cast iron sets having a slightly smaller head. I had a set of both left handed no less. Very difficult to find left handed even back in those days.
I had a set of MacGregor VIP's that are very similar to those clubs. A great set of clubs. I used to hit balls at Northcrest. They have a nice facility. I live and work further out now.
Mizuno do their mb irons similar to the Macgregor club you got in hands. I love playing blades, there's nothing like the feeling of hitting a blade well.
My first real set of irons were these Bought them in 1986, 2 thru SW. In 1990 I traded them in for Hogan Apex Edge. Sold the Hogan’s for Mizuno JPX-ez forged last year. Wish I still had the Mac’s. Like your channel so I just subscribed.
TGIF!!!! Man another sweet club! I have to take my hat off to you again. I really like the look of the curved style of mb blades too. That's what I loved about my Mizuno MP-14's they were just gorgeous. The music during the MacGregor funeral was perfect! Hey if your mic works when you're on the range, you should comment on the feel of the club, how well you hit it etc. That would be kinda nice. Any way well done and thanks so much!
Iblove your channel very informative. I came across some Macgregor Jack Burke Emerald Iron set 3-9 and wedge. Any thoughts on those clubs, they feel/look like very thin blades.
I forgot to comment earlier. I agree with you whole heartedly on the commercialism of golf. It's just ridiculous. I have clubs I've used for years that I may never stop using. My old Wilson 8813 (named Sophia for........... you guessed it Sophia Loren) That putter is simply beautiful! Henrik Stenson has that old Callaway Diablo Octane Pro 3 wood he has used for years 2010 or 11. I bet there's a few more players too. You are right though golf is out of control. Can you buy a "game"??? Maybe next year! Keep up the good work sir.
Vintage golfer, That would be a great piece for you to do. All the clubs that won the masters going back to Hogan , Snead or Nelson Or before if you can Masters or the Augusta invitational started in 1934 won by Mr Horton Smith. Love the channel Maybe you should contact Mr Sidney Matthews about the Jones era. Just a thought.
I rescued a set of Jack Nicklaus Muirfield 20th irons from the dump today, they look nice apart from spots of surface rust, should I keep them and or they worth anything?
Great video.. I'm looking at a set of these jack Nicklaus muirfield irons. There being sold on letgo for 90 bucks. With a mustang vintage putter And 3 persimmons woods. Heck and the bag.. After your great review on this set , I'm deffinatly gonna grab them and keep them forever.. I too connect with my clubs..
They might be a shadow of their former self but MacGregor is still selling golf clubs. Who knows, they may have a renascence someday, like the Ben Hogan Company, and go back to making the classic looking irons. That would be amazing!
Sometime between 1982-1984, MacGregor released a limited number of VIP Irons modeled exactly like the originals from the 60's. The VIP Insignia, on the muscle back, was in red letters. I purchased a set, while living in San Francisco, and played them for several years before they were stolen. I often think of those Irons as they were somewhat of a treasure to me. Do you have any recollection of those clubs. I've looked for them on EBay a couple of time but have come up empty...
I am not familiar with those. The closest thing I remember was the 1987-1988 Commemorative sets. These were NOT the VIP, they had black faces and were copies of Jack's 1961 set. I'll keep an eye out for those awesome VIP's.
@@TheVintageGolfer I happened to look on Ebay . There is a picture of the club . I had hoped for a full set but its not ! There mixed with the cb95? How far do these irons go compared to a modern set ? Found a good deal on EBay and really want to purchase them but don’t want to give up distance. Thanks!
You will “give up” distance because they have traditional lofts. That being said, a 7 iron easily gives me 155-160 yds with a good strike. Think about a mixed set where you substitute your long irons out for something easy to hit.
I own Walter Hagen 1973 W.H edition that you have reviewed. These J.N Muirfields are better at least for me. But the Walter Hagens are prettier buy a factor of 2. IMHO
I had a set of these in college.. LOVED their look, But I thought they were sometimes tough to hit..And when i thought about it, it was because this club had a minor design flaw: Too long of a hosel on ALL the Muirfield irons!!!. I think if they had made the hosel shorter and moved even MORE of the metal to the muscle back portion, they would have had a FLAWLESS iron.. As a side note, I saw Paul Azinger get rid of his ping irons and he played these muirfield irons for a couple of years, and had great success with the muirfields..Which is incredible in itself-- because pings are EASY to hit and these Muirfields are NOT..
How much are they worth really, I have wood 1,3,5 not the persimmon but mt straight, ht straight, also have 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,p,s of that. Can get a bit money out of that? Thanks
That 86 Masters was one of the most exciting sporting events I have ever seen.
