  • Canada has been keen to find ways to get people into electric vehicles (EVs) and out of gas-guzzling cars that produce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Governments have been using regulations and subsidies with the goal of speeding up the transition to EVs.
Global's David Akin has been investigating the pace of electric vehicle ownership across the country, and he looks at who is benefiting from the incentive programs.

EXACTLY. People don't want to talk about this fact. The batteries in EVs last 10 years at most, and cost between 10-20k to replace. Imagine paying a premium for a car that becomes a paperweight after only 10 years. Insanity.

Chevrolet volt gen 2 is ur answer. Replacement battery cost of ~13k but I currently have one with 200k going strong. Bonus if you can get openpilot running on yours. And if you want to camp you can hook it up to electricity so you dont need to turn the gas on for heat or cooling, making it quieter to sleep in and not annoy nearby campers. Government provided generous subsidies especially for Tesla is worth and very much needed as when you switch from Gas vehicles to Electric ⚡️ ones, you need lots of upgrades as you need wall chargers which Tesla doesn’t provide, you need to buy paying 💰extra, once you buy that you need to upgrade your housing electric panels to 200 amp (which cost extra money) and also need installation, inspection and permits from Government (again extra cost), on top of that Tesla doesn’t come with any additional accessories as compared to other Gas vehicles…. So in all this hassle, that maximum $5,000 subsidy doesn’t even count.
No doubt it’s luxury car, but subsidizing would be more beneficial for promotion and more affordable for consumers as adopting brand new technology. ✌️

-the second EV in 12months gets no rebate under izev or BC rebate schemes
-high income households are far more likely to have 2 or more EVs
-high income households are far more likely to buy an EV that does not qualify for a rebate

Thanks for letting us know what we know already - we need cheaper, family oriented and compact model EVs, Mullen Automotive has the answer today, and it can be purchased through Marion, if you're in The States. Canada could really use our own EV manufacturer to produce cheap, dependable EVs for the masses. Also, those subsidies are a fraction of what goes to oil and gas companies that are already profitable while they bilk us for every nickel and dime as their product remains abundant, supply and demand be damned!

Or just get a cheaper, longer lasting, gas powered vehicle that is less harmful to the environment and doesn’t require subsidies.

@@BlueTeamRedTeam There are plenty of gas powered vehicles that are more expensive than an EV and provide less value. The average lifespan of an EV is the same or longer than an ICE. The average ICE goes through 30,000 gallons of fuel in it's life - which do you suppose is worse for the environment, that, or mining 30kgs of rare minerals? Hint: EVs are much less disruptive to the environment, both in the materials they are crafted with and in operation. The subsidies need to be taken away from oil and gas and all put on EVs and EV manufacturing so we can get rid of the pollution.

@@Merakis100 EVs do not last longer than ICE vehicles. Of course many ice vehicles are more expensive but many more are not and offer far better value. The average EV battery weighs 1 ton. Using lithium Nickel and cobalt that require heavy industry. They weigh far more and tear up their tires and roads at an accelerated rate. They require electricity to charge and the vast majority of that energy comes from natural gas and coal. They are largely made from plastics that require the use of petrochemicals. Their carbon footprint to manufacture is more than double that of an ICE vehicles. Almost 4 tonnes of CO2 are released during the production process of a single electric car and, in order to break even, the vehicle must be used for at least 8 years to offset the initial emissions by 0.5 tonnes of prevented emissions annually. That doesn’t include the emission of electrical generat required to charge the vehicle. With all that's required to mine and process minerals - from giant diesel trucks to fossil-fuel-powered refineries - EV battery production has a significant carbon footprint. As a result, building an electric vehicle does more damage to the climate than building a gas car does. The lithium extraction process uses a lot of water-approximately 500,000 gallons (1,9million liter) per metric ton of lithium. To extract lithium, miners drill a hole in salt flats and pump salty, mineral-rich brine to the surface. If EVs are so great why do they need to pay you to buy one and propose a future ban on ICE vehicles?
