To make a particular point again, your worries as a USA-born individual in Colombia should be simply: 1. am I working on my Spanish and treating those around me with respect? 2. Am I friendly, open to the culture? 3. Do I display the same social niceties that are generally appreciated around the world? Yes, Colombia, and Latin America, are populated by modern humans, and we as humans typically want the same thing...we want to be treated well, to have people be affectionate, listen to us, show appreciation, and show us respect. If you do those things you AS AN INDIVIDUAL will be a great representative of WHATEVER culture/country you come from.

Agreed. When in Columbia, if you respect their culture, especially if you are speaking their language, it goes a long way..
That said, and even acknowledging that there are lots of Gringos, white.ans black, that go there and act like @sses, that kind of behavior is not even necessary because many colombianas will approach you with phony interest and intentions. There are just as many for more Colombianas there preying on unsuspecting Gringos. Drugging, mugging or robbing somebody, which happens to Gringos are routinely, it's still less of a crime than insulting somebody.

As a frequent visitor to Colombia ( a big city there) on a monthly basis for almost one year, and as someone who is NOT just a tourist, guess what? Colombians are preoccupied with their own difficulties and struggles. They don't have time to focus on "foreigners!" They have to worry about eating, finding love, keeping love, and plain surviving. For all the worries about "how will I be treated" remember, Colombians are just like you and me---they love and hate EACH OTHER, just like Americans love and hate certain people. I see so much gossip, negativity, cliche behavior, and suspicion of each other, both acquaintances, friends, and family members, that don't worry, they are annoyed, irritated, and angry with LOTS of people :)! If you get to know families there they will be glad to tell you about all the crime, violence, domestic abuse, etc. that Colombians do to each other. Again, please, YOU as a foreigner, are NOT on their primary list of people to complain about :)!!!!

I'm from Panama. My country is next to Colombia, we get a lot of people from Colombia here. 90% of the women that come from that country are "working girls"... this is why the "gringos" get this idea that they can get/buy any girl in that country. Those videos on social network... Yatchs full of colombians girls... they don't help either. Anyway Colombians girls have always been gold diggers for gringos because they know that an average American man is a high status man in Latin America.

I've witnessed it myself during my visit in Medellin in 2019, a group of gringos in their mid - late 20's preying young girls in parque Lleras. They wanted to pick-up a young girl for a groupie. I was so mad and disgusted. I asked my Colombian friend to do something, he said reporting them to the police will get us into trouble. He told me the young girl was probably a Venezuelan. Poor girl, they were also making fun of her, as if she's a cheap commodity. I think she was only 16 or 17 yo. I left the park really upset that day.

There's a reason Colombian attracts more sex tourists than families looking to enjoy the beach, like in Cancun for example. You attract what you project, and unfortunately, it is way too easy to find drugs and prostitutes in Colombia. I can't tell you the amount of times I was approached and asked if I wanted any chicas or coca. The local culture enables this sort of deviant behavior, and people come here to take advantage of it since it's likely less prevalent back home. I hope Colombia can improve their image and promote their beautiful national parks and little colonial towns more.

it's a bit duplicitous to blame only the gringos. prostitution is legal in Colombia and the word is out. Medellin is to gringos what Amsterdam is to Europeans. if one goes to parque lleras in the evening there are prostitutes everywhere and good girls know this and don't go. the Colombian government could easily change this if they wanted. stereotypes work both ways and Medellin has one too. my point is there's a lot of blame to be shared. this is coming from someone who lives in Medellin and who is married to a paisa.

Okay. There is a reason why Colombia is attracting a bunch of either unhappily married or recently divorced gringo guys looking to get laid. Colombia and Romania are the engines of the webcam industry and as hesitant as some Colombians may be to admit the truth, it pumps an extraordinary amount of money into the economy. It's worth noting that the women (and yeah, guys as well) who are camming (either independently or in studios) are _not_ "working girls" by any stretch of the imagination. They're doing one thing - acting. Their audience though has a distinct tendency to disregard that inconvenient fact of life and they buy into this notion that Colombian women are hyper-sexualized and resultantly "easy." That doesn't jive with reality of course, but this is the mindset the webcam industry eagerly taps into. The users who may have the financial wherewithal can, do and will travel to Colombia hoping to translate their virtual fantasies into reality and yes, those are the gringos who are managing to piss off Colombians - a lot. But again, as with all stories there are two sides and the efficiency with which the webcam studios are raking in money feeds these foreign perceptions that Colombia is some kind of adult Disneyland that makes Las Vegas look tame by comparison. Full disclosure - my girlfriend works in the industry, not as a camgirl but rather handling the financial transactions through token monetization, liaising with banks in the U.S. and Colombia and making certain that models and studios are paid. Bookkeeping basically. Sure, she could do the same thing for a "normal" company, but she'd likely be paid *much* less. _That_ is the bottom line - the webcam industry is pumping a bunch of dollars into the Colombian economy. There's no easy fix unfortunately, that's just the reality of the situation. I get that it angers more than a few Colombians, but by the same token they're kind of disregarding the underlying "why." The truth is a little more nuanced than they may want to admit.

@@jessiesheldon-huffey1824 Easy for you to say probably never having visited or lived in Colombia. Bottom line is the fact that the economic situation for many Colombians is pretty dire and the webcam industry has furnished a lifeline that's allowing families to pay their rent and put food on the table. You may want to set your snarky judgmentalism aside until you've absorbed the reality of the circumstances a significant chunk of Colombians must deal with day in and day out. The sort of "morality" you seem to embrace is a luxury for the well off.

    • @jessiesheldon-huffey1824
      @jessiesheldon-huffey1824 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@jimbo6413 By putting "morality" in quotes, you are asserting that my morality isn't valid, which is completely unfair. So is your assessment of "snarky judgementalism" and your implication that I can't possibly understand the situation many Columbians are in because I haven't been there. I have been to the poorest parts of Tijuana and have seen the very hard choices that poor people are faced with. Hell, if I were born into the same circumstances and needed to participate in a seedy industry to put food on the table, I would probably do it. However, I wouldn't go around calling my job a good and alright thing to do. I would be honest enough to admit that I'm contributing to an industry that dehumanizes people and monetizes lust for the sake of providing for my family. And I would also look for a way out of said industry, not just be content to perpetuate it for the remainder of my days.

As a tourist, visitor, or simply as a human being, one must first give in order to receive. You cannot expect to be treated with deference just because you come from a different culture or your currency has more purchasing power. Colombians are people dedicated to survival, with a very tough life at almost every level, and we are very proud to survive among the most serious social cancers on the planet: corruption, drug trafficking, inequality, lack of opportunities, unemployment, and above all, a sense of lack of future, like no other people has been hit throughout their entire lives.
When you go to a place, read about it, inquire, question, and ask what you can contribute in, not just what they can give you.
Do not come to criticize my country. You are welcome to help build it, not to make it worse.

I visited Colombia for five weeks, I just got back about three weeks ago. I honestly loved it. I spent two weeks in Manizales and that was honestly the place I like the most.
Should I rethink immigration? because I was seriously considering it. I don’t want to go if I’m going to be labeled as some kind of pervert automatically. I was considering going back to Bogotá to learn the language, and then eventually moving to Manizales. It would be tough to go to Manizales right off the bat without having much Spanish. Nobody speaks English there, so I would be very isolated until I learn the language for several months.

Hey David, as a Colombian who studied in Prague around 2010/2011 and was recently this summer to that city, I can say this sort of stag tourism is completely over. Prague no longer needs that sort of tourism nowadays, moreover it seems they are trying to replicate more of the Bavarian model, dispatching people home or to their hotels early on. Already back then, Czech people never liked the idea of being associated with Eastern Europe.
As a Colombian from Bogota, I have always thought that at some point (hopefully) my country will imitate the Czech model. It is much more difficult of course, because contrary to Prague, neither Medellin or Bogota have the cultural richness of the former. Nevertheless, it has a whole future to innovate and take inspiration from (Costa Rica)
I have never seen nor thought that the people is with foreigners per se. Colombians are more often than not, curious about them, and with an open and warm mind to receive them. Just that yes, after a while some behaviors start being repulsed by society, and stereotypes appear. Sex and drug tourists in Medellin, pedophiles in the Caribbean coast.
I remember very fondly a travel to Medellin I had along some friends. We stayed very near Lleras park, there were at this B&B, some Korean tourists that thought highly about the city and in general, about the environment. The city did look beautiful and was quite peaceful (sure, the nightlife was nightlife). My last trip to that city was in 2017 and my impression was completely different. There were already some prostitutes injecting drugs near the park. I can only imagine how worse this has become after the pandemic (given the current local administration).
I believe the first step for these horrible stereotypes to disappear, is that foreign youtubers stop producing such kind of content. Sadly, there is an abudance of vloggers speaking and even charging for their stupid guidebooks on how to hook up there.

(worth $100K or more : Bentleys , top of the line Mercedes, etc) Trust me : this kid always tells the truth and knows quite a bit about cars. Not to mention that I've seen many times similar situations on my daily life here in S Florida.Keep the good work !

Prostitution is legal and very popular and it's become part of their culture, like it nor not. Although the legal age of prostitution is 18, the age of sexual consent is 14! Thats one four! They created it themselves. They are the ones wearing the low cut top! And now they point the finger at gringos? LOL. You can walk just about anywhere in Medellin at ANYTIME of the day and be propositioned by a girl who looks "scary" young in a bikini top and hot pants. If they want to change how people treat them, they need to change the culture, which means change the law. But I've never seen anyone there ever protesting prostitution. It's like a women's right. This isn't really just a 'gringo'' problem.
Prostitution is legal in Colombia, and that means where the tourists with money go, the prostitutes will follow. In other words, the women who choose to work in that area are also contributing to the problem, so we can't exclusively point the finger at gringos, they don't know who is who. And no, I'm not making excuses for bad behavior, just pointing out a fact.
And vice versa, where the prostitutes are, the sex tourists will follow.
Maybe something as simple as requiring working girls to wear a special bracelet, badge or other identifer so people can know who is a working girl and who isn't will help. Hell, requiring the prostitutes to apply for a permit would even generate revenue for the city.
Or maybe zone the city appropriately to keep the two elements from mixing.
It's a tough issue that I don't think has an easy fix.

Instead of complaining about tourists’ lack of knowledge about Colombia’s 15th biggest city, appreciate the fact that their money is arriving in your local Colombian economy, because we sure do need that money back here with all the inflation we’re dealing with in Miami.

There are channels on TH-cam devoted to sex tourism, including some specifically about Colombia. They promote behavior as you describe in the novela. On one of my visits to Colombia, I chatted with a couple of older gringos like me at a breakfast cafe. They were in Medellin for just a few days. I thought that it was unfortunate that they didn't have more time to explore Medellin, a place I have come to love, as you do. They were there for love but in a different way. Looking for a quick hookup. The next morning I saw them at the same cafe with a young local working girl at their table chatting her up in their pig-latin Spanish. I felt sad for them and her. I have never experienced any negative vibes from Colombians about my gringoism. I am a curious gringo and they are curious about me. They mostly want to make sure I see all the great things in and around the city. The cab drivers practice their English while I practice my Spanish. It's almost hilarious and great fun. I love almost everything about the city, the people, and the culture.

I have a close friend that is moving to Colombia tomorrow and one of the things that she says all the time is that she avoids Gringos because she doesn't want to be associated with that attitude and a lot of them are pretty gross. I think what you're talking about is in part the passport Bros situation. There are a lot of misogynistic men, especially from the United States, who are convinced that they're going to be able to go to countries like Colombia, which they automatically feel they are superior to, and con a bunch of women into basically doing sex work. It's a weird sad situation, and it sucks for people who are not into that, but it's better that Colombians protect themselves from predators

It takes two to tango. I get your point but foreigners are not only to blame. I believe that girls who work in prostitution started moving over to Pq. Lleras going after foreigners mainly because its an upscale park. Yes it seems its gone downhill very fast. I believe that the local government should intervene but then again prostitution is legal in Colombia? If I visit Medellin I would not go to Parque Lleras even if I am invited, there are other places much relaxing and clam that can be visited. How about doing some research and maybe recommending other places to visit and which places to avoid. Lets make ourselves part of a solution and divert ourselves away from the problems. Its won't be easy because you have too many Freak and Frack youtubers or "influencers" that monetized on bad things rather than the opposite. For example; people in Iran and from Iran call themselves Persians or Persos in Spanish. No one from outside of Iran or Iranian culture has the right to correct any Persian who refers to themselves as Persian to now be called Iranian. That is not the way THEY CHOSE to refer to themselves in Iran and we should all respect that. Just like how people from the Netherlands are not called Netherlandian; they are called the Dutch, and we should all respect that.
With that being said, people outside of the United States should respect the fact that we refer to ourselves as Americans and that at large most Americans refer to people from Mexico and further beyond Mexico’s southern border as Latin Americans or as people from their native country, like Mexican, Nicaraguan, Panamanian, Cuban, Dominican, Colombian, Venezuelan, Peruvian, Brazilian, or from whatever country they or their parents are from.
Trying to correct an American on how they refer to themselves is ignorant.
