    He was the only athlete I've ever seen who was *capable* of 12:30 for 5,000m. This run proved it. His pace was metronomic, and this run made him the first man under 12:40. His 3,000m and 2 mile records will stand for a hundred years. Unfortunately, he got cocky, and threw his discipline out of the window, ruining his career. Nevertheless, while he was at the top, he burned extraordinarily bright (1995 - 1998). Probably the most talented distance runner ever.

      @Kai Smithley 12.32 is a good guess, but a coach can only do so much. I read an interview with Kiptanui that after a few years Komen didn't care to much about what Kiptanui was trying to teach him, Komen trained less and less and wanted to do everything in his own way. Kiptanui had a long and succesful career with a good racing schedule, so it dosen't make sense that he didn't wanted the same for Komen.

    the mid 90s n 00s were fabulous for middle-long distance running...Every other week haile, komen, bekele, morceli, el gherrouj were going for world records in Brussels, Zurich in the golden league it was a great time to be a kid growing up watching these legends.
    nowadays it just isn't the same the runners aren't going for records n it's just not as exciting.

  • @magnuslundberg9675
    @magnuslundberg9675 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Incredible for a 21 year old ! Sadly he lost his motivation and dedication when he had earned enough money. Imagine if he'd stayed dedicated for 4-5 more years, he would have broken the 12.30 barrier for 5.000m or at least have been very close. Komen never became the greatest middle/long distance runner of all time, but he was the greatest talent and had the greatest potential ever.

      He spent his money to kenyans child, schools. Some years ago he sold his spikes from 3000m world record.

      @@waterproof4403 Lol. Do you mean he has a kick but just didnt utilise it in this specific race? Or are you saying he spread it out during the longevity of the race? If the 1st then you're pretty wrong. I'm yet to see one of his races with a significant kick. He just didn't have one. Doesn't make him any less though of a runner of course. It takes more balls to be a Bekele or a Geb than a Farah.

    Interesting to watch him from the front. When they land, his feet actually seem to cross the midline of his body, so that he seems to be running on a tightrope. That's something we're always advised not to do.
    In my experience, though, running like that actually causes you to land closer to the 4th and 5th metatarsals, which seems to provide greater elastic return from the muscles and fascia of the feet (i.e, better bounce off the feet).
    I can't recall seeing any world-class runners who run splay-footed. They're either neutral, like Komen, or toed-in. Maybe that's why.

    Seeing Asbel Kiprop running before his EPO story came into the press haunted me as to how their running form was so similar.
    What I don't understand is that though Kiprop is 190 cm and actually a giant, Daniel Komen was only 170 and still looked so damn tall running.

    • @MrKarma-bv5dp
      @MrKarma-bv5dp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've thought the same thing about his height, he looks way taller than 5"7 while running. He Must have really long legs and high hips, it makes a person look way taller.

      @@Manuel080293 Both have been broken but with shoes that are 2-7% faster, better tracks, better and more consistent training with a longer term approach than Komen took. If Komen had followed the same program as Ingebrigtsen, he would have run much faster. I still think Komen is the true world record holder for the mile. He lost about 5 seconds on Guerrouj in the first 100 meters of the 3:46.38 he ran when Guerrouj ran 3:45.64, throwing on the brakes in a crowd and veering out into lane 4 to escape the traffic jam of runners on the first corner, and to think he did that on tired legs 4 days after running a 12:39 5000 meter world record. If he had focused on the mile over a longer career, I think Komen would have been a sub 3:40 miler.
