If you look at what happened to Daniel Komen at the beginning of this race, I think it can legitimately be claimed that he would have broken the 3:43 mile if he had been running in a world record attempt at the mile this day with pacers. He lost at least 4 seconds in the first 200 meters having to put the brakes on, veer far out to the right at a 90 degree angle to the direction the leaders were running in all the way out into lane 4 on the first turn and then sprint like a madman loading up on lactic acid in the first 200 meters to catch back up to the leaders, the most inefficient way to run a mile. After running all that extra distance, he came through the half mile in 1:52.6 which means he would have run a 1:48.6 first half mile and then still was able to run the final half in 1:53.8. If you add up all the extra distance he covered and the jogging pace he ran the first portion of it at in order to wade out through the crowd into lane 4, there's almost no question in my mind that he could have broken 3:43 for the mile on this day. He was literally throwing on the brakes at one point while the leaders were sprinting away from him as he tried to get out into the clear. It's one of the most incredible performances in track and field history in my mind, which few seem to fully appreciate.

Auslaufmodell KIRCHE... .

Interesting to watch him from the front. When they land, his feet actually seem to cross the midline of his body, so that he seems to be running on a tightrope. That's something we're always advised not to do. In my experience, though, running like that actually causes you to land closer to the 4th and 5th metatarsals, which seems to provide greater elastic return from the muscles and fascia of the feet (i.e, better bounce off the feet). I can't recall seeing any world-class runners who run splay-footed. They're either neutral, like Komen, or toed-in. Maybe that's why.

Incredible for a 21 year old ! Sadly he lost his motivation and dedication when he had earned enough money. Imagine if he'd stayed dedicated for 4-5 more years, he would have broken the 12.30 barrier for 5.000m or at least have been very close. Komen never became the greatest middle/long distance runner of all time, but he was the greatest talent and had the greatest potential ever.

He was the only athlete I've ever seen who was *capable* of 12:30 for 5,000m. This run proved it. His pace was metronomic, and this run made him the first man under 12:40. His 3,000m and 2 mile records will stand for a hundred years. Unfortunately, he got cocky, and threw his discipline out of the window, ruining his career. Nevertheless, while he was at the top, he burned extraordinarily bright (1995 - 1998). Probably the most talented distance runner ever.
