My daughter loves Anomia and I like it too...but Mary: I think you are a spot on. I think it mainly comes from that women are natural multi-taskers and men are 'one thing at a time' in what both genders do best. Anomia should be the litmus test of 'are you good at multi-tasking?" Love Wingspan and I actually really like playing Codenames Duet with my husband as well. Scrabble was a big game in my family, but my brain is just not good at unscrambling letters or bringing to mind words I know 😂 Plus my grandma was an English teacher and one of my aunts is a book editor, so no one else really stands a chance when they’re around. Lol. I don’t play much these days 😂
I remain convinced that there is a lot of strategy in scrabble, but there is a steep learning curve for sure. I’ll also admit that my family is prone to browsing the dictionary, which makes it more about the strategy than about the vocabulary for sure.
If you like Pandemic, and sci-fi, you need to seek out Matt Leacock's design based on the old show Thunderbirds. Sadly it only got one printing and didn't catch on. Sadly, because it's a great game that does Pandemic even better than Pandemic. It's now hard to find, but more than worth it, if you can. Even harder to find is the Tracy Island expansion, which some fans of the game consider essential. I know, or know of, multiple people who call Thunderbirds their Pandemic killer (including Dice Tower regulars Mike Dilisio and Zee Garcia).
Way to go, Mary! And shout out for “Scrabble” and “word games” in general. They don’t get enough appreciation from the BGGers. I believe that makes a subtle statement about the state of lower attention spans and vocabulary levels in our current cultures. Just saying.
This dude loves Anomia and is a super serial gamer! It has always been a huge hit at work for a lunch time game too. Edit: I have the kids version of Anomia too which I believe is harder than regular Anomia. You are supposed to come up with a word that starts with the same sound as the first (or first two) letter of the animal that is pictured on your card. Make sense? Nobody else thought so either.
So if I see a horse, I should say house? Intriguing, but it sounds less fun. And I’m glad to hear you like the game! I later rethought my statement about dudes, and I think I just play with a lot of people who prefer numbers (probability, stats) to words. I should find more English majors to play with.

So glad me and my wife are into newer board games and we no longer play Scrabble. It was no fun that she destroyed me every game. I have a Masters, she a HS diploma. But she reads books constantly, so that's probably why her vocabulary is WAY better than mine (and her spelling too). So, Daniel, no need to read a dictionary. Just be a nerd like my wife and always have your nose in a book.
