  • DB Levels Explained: • What Levels Should My ...
**Note: While all other surrounds are set to 77db, I found a better ATMOS experience with setting the ATMOS speakers to 80db.
    FL, FR, C, and ATMOS = 80db; Surrounds = 77db; Subs = 84db
Setting the proper db level of each of your speakers can really improve the surround sound experience from your system. By lowering the surround speakers 3db below the fronts, movies will be heard the way they were meant to be without too much from the surrounds. Using an SPL meter can help achieve the ideal db levels, and is also an effective tool for subwoofer integration - ensuring they are delivering the perfect amount of bass.

Great Video, you've got me thinking about my levels now. I'd love to hear those Rhythmics in your room. That's how I found your channel. Good content, I'm powering through all your videos today. Thanks for sharing. This could be bad for me.

I have a simple 3.1.2 setup, no surround speakers, I set everything even the subwoofer to about 75dB and when I'm watching movies it sounds so much better then before!

You could set the db anywhere between 75-85 db. However, it really depends on how capable the speakers are that's being used and here's why. The peak levels will cause distortion if a speaker can't handle it. So, some people home theater will sound better if the decibels are measured to 75 or more closer to it.

After running auto calibration on my Yamaha TSR 700 I used sound level meter C weighting and SLOW setting and found that all my speakers were 70db. I decided to adjust from there raised volume to 0db and raised speaker levels until speakers were at 75db. Thing is, now alot of my speakers are +dB. Some at +1.5dB and others as high as +5.5dB and +6dB. Is this okay?

Hey Polk you re right about db(C) and slow adjustments. I think that the level of each speaker should be at 76 and when playing together 79. At least that what i have done in my home studio with my monitors. Does Dolby has a different standard in 5.1, or in us?

Good video thanks for the info even after a clean auto room correction my levels were off I used a iPhone sound meter c weighted and slow response and set master volume to 0db then lowered the levels till each speaker was 75-76db average when I first started the levels were 80-81 I think I ended up with -4db left front -3db center -3db front right im curious about your crossovers though mainly on the center I think you said it’s sounds best that way but just worried it might blow your speaker that’s pretty low frequencies for center channel

Nice, simple video. Still wondering whether to set the DB level with the regular test tone or set the DB level when checking the individual EQ settings for each speaker after running your specific auto EQ tool. I am using Pioneer LX305 with MCACC. SPL meter readings are different when using the default test tone/speaker level and when measuring DB level in manual EQ, which generate some "pink" noise as well. I suspect there is a difference because MCACC has already set specific trim levels for each of the speakers, not just frequency settings.

Hey man! We’re levels spot on when doing the auto calibration? Just curious if you had to bump any of the channels up or down

What's up my friend? After listening to my S60's for about a month, they have opened up quite nicely. I'm still gonna get a sub for music. I'm really digging those L12's in your video. Do you think I would benefit from a stereo pair of L12's or one huge FVX 15? Thanks for the help. By the way, I remember a scene from "House of Flying Daggers" where a lady does a dance for a drunk guy and then dances to some nuts being thrown at drums. I wonder if you could do a video on that. Stay COOL?

What if if your master volume is not in negatives? I have a Denon x3500h and the master is 0-90. Master level at zero the pink noise is basically not coming through. So I'm guessing the volume should be at least at listening volume the adjust the levels from there? Thanks in advance.

I thought that calibrating all speakers to 75db was reference.
