We argue that the recent agreement between the UK and Mauritius perpetuates colonial injustices, undermining the sovereignty and self-determination of the Maldivian people. Here are some key points raised in this analysis: Colonial Legacy and Continued Injustices: 1. Separation of Chagos: We argue that the 1834 British survey was a precursor to the eventual separation of the Chagos Archipelago from the Maldives. This separation, we contend, was a colonial act that continues to have negative consequences for the Maldivian people. 2. Mauritius as a Neocolonial State: We view Mauritius as a neocolonial state created by the British. We suggest that its claim to the Chagos Archipelago is based on colonial-era divisions and therefore perpetuates historical injustices. 3. True Decolonization: We argue that true decolonization requires the restoration of the Chagos Archipelago to its pre-colonial status as part of the Maldivian territory. Indigenous Rights and Cultural Appropriation: 1. Indigenous Maldivian Population: We emphasize that the Maldivian people are one of the longest-surviving indigenous populations with a rich cultural heritage. 2. French Colonial Impact: We highlight the French colonial legacy, particularly the forced settlement of enslaved laborers, as an act of cultural appropriation. 3. Prioritizing Indigenous Rights: We argue that the rights of the indigenous Maldivian people should be prioritized over the claims of colonial settlers. This analysis offers a critical perspective on the historical and contemporary issues surrounding the Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago. It raises important questions about the nature of decolonization, sovereignty, and indigenous rights. Different stakeholders, including the UK, Mauritius, and the colonial settlers-community, having their own claims and interests, can engage in constructive dialogue and seeking peaceful solutions. To gain a deeper understanding of this issue, it is crucial to consider various viewpoints and historical evidence. Engaging in constructive dialogue and seeking peaceful solutions is essential to address the legacy of colonialism and work towards a just and equitable future for all involved.

Give away remaining islands to the closest country there is - chances are this country has some historical claim even though its people didn't have the tech to reach the given away island. 6. May as well go an extra step and return the whole of England to the Italy because it used to belong to the Roman settlers. 7. With this out of the way, Wales will finally be free to become its own country and speak their language as the only national language. 8. I am Mauritian.. with all due respect to the fellow scholar, your research is bias and lacks a lot of facts. Only a true Mauritian will be able to explain the initial independence negotiations, 50 years deal of the archipelagos and the unlawful exclusion from independence..not to mention the trauma that Chagossians had to go through since being expelled. Now that the initial 50 years have lapsed and Mauritius has been patient, it is high time for the UK to give back the sovereign rights.
@@lu544 The Mauritian government has already expressed this. It is understandable that the military base is necessary for regional and global security reasons. There is no intention of stopping the US base. The claim is only on the actual sovereign rights..it is no more BIOT.
Secondly, to allow the native chagossians and descendents to return to Chagos including Diego Garcia if possible. I am sure that the US base and the locals can find a midway to support each other's presence. It could potentially be more beneficial to both.

Britain’s interests should end within its borders
The current leaders of Britian could care less about Britian's long-term survival and they won't be happy until Britain is nothing more than a small province in larger European Nation.
Ahh...please..without slaves, the British working class & colonials to pay for a bloated navy...Britain has no choice.
The Poms are already suffering, do you want a second civil war in Britain? I'm sure Nigel Farage wouldn't mind one as long as he becomes lord protector. Confiscate your assets along with those you know to increase the British fleet, treble your taxes for international prestige. That sounds like a rather jolly idea. Be careful what what you wish for, it just might come true.
Peerages were granted by the crown to wealthy merchants in Britain for financing various wars that the Crown became embroiled with post the English Civil War, the Glorious Revolution & other reforms won by the citizens curtailing the crown from raising taxes to fund costly wars.
The last time I checked those ungrateful colonists across the pond were not willing to pay their fair share of taxes after the crown defeated the French among others in their neck of the woods & then decided to rebel against the crown. 😂
Yep sad fizzle to the end of the brittish empire
Oh? What's wrong timmy? Miss your colonialism days? How about we colonize UK instead?
Britain is already a small province of the US hegemony.

Prominent Egyptian archaeologist and former Antiquities Minister Zahi Hawass has launched a petition for the return to Egypt of the pharaonic bust of Queen Nefertiti from the Neues Museum in Berlin.
Nefertiti’s famous painted limestone bust was uncovered at Tell el-Amarna, about 300km (185 miles) south of Cairo, in 1912 by a German archaeological mission, which shipped it to Berlin the following year.
On could argue that the current Arabs of Egypt aren't the successor of ancient Egypt.
There is a lot of false history surrounding The Chagos Islands, they have never belonged to Mauritius until now, Mauritians have never lived on the Chagos Islands. Until the 17th century they were uninhabited islands, they then became French, then became British. Chagossians are descended from slaves from mainland Africa that the French and British settled on the islands, they were not Mauritians.
The colony of Mauritius became independent in 1968 and that colony included the Chagos

@@bulthaosen1169 thank you Capitan Obvious. Your answers are always refreshingly obvious. Makes me wonder why I didn't think of that before.
All claims have an origin. When it comes to colonially created entities, Mostly out of nowhere . What claims for European countries have to colonies anywhere? Nothing. They just made it up. Mauritius claim to chagos is not based on some historical rights of its people having settled there. It's claim is simply that they had a colonial entity in common with Chagos and they were administered together. One can argue that other British possessions like India Sri Lanka or Maldives have the same right to claim Chagos.

Seeing the enthusiasm for giving away Chagos Islands 🏝 , I can already guess people are going to ❤this 8 step plan!
1. Let's also give back Northern Ireland to Ireland.
2. Give away Gibraltar to Spain.
3. Then give Scotland their much desired independence.
4. Also let's give away the Falkland Islands to the Argentina.
8. Oh wait no, we also need to cancel any Antarctica territorial claims because that continent belongs to the penguins.
My point being that there's a saying: "Every person is generous with other people's money", but as soon the talks start about them being a contributor, all the generosity ends.
I feel the same case can be made about country's territory. Everyone's generous with the territory of a country they're not a citizen of. I'm guessing if DW started talking about your country needing to give away disputed land, the attitude would shift.

Actually, you're wrong. The article … explores the ways in which international law was used by Western colonial powers and by Republican China to define the legal status of Tibet and Mongolia.
In it, Yuan examines the history of the legal notion of "suzerainty" - often been used to describe the historical legal status of Tibet and Mongolia - and show that it was in fact a purposefully meaningless concept….“
Why is DW bringing this kind of person with zero reasoning skill ?
His points are invalid. Uk should even leave the island . Let them take their bases to uk .
Interviewer: Most came to UK at gunpoint. They didn’t go willingly.
Random guy: No they were badly treated by the former colonies government and they chose to relocate.
So basically we have two separate narratives, and without researching I’m leaning towards the news anchor, simply because I don’t see how native peoples who had just been expelled from their lands would have the means to immigrate in massive numbers to England. Sure there was only several thousand of them, and it’s much more in 1960 England style to simply force them on boats, with the boats going wherever (likely both the Uk and the former colonial government). England back in those days wasn’t known for its long term thinking, especially when colonies are involved.
