Hello Sorin. I had the same fault with Lenovo. Check the I2C line between IT8227 and the graphics chip. The KBC reads the temperature from the chip. For me, the problem was the 2.2K pullup resistor
Let's hope he sees this comment!
Sorin i had the same exact thing with a Legion similar to the one that you have there. I thought it was the missing thermal paste, but in the end it was a resistor!!
I also discovered fault with a cheap Raspberry Pi pico and I2C.scan() function in micro python.. It wasn't showing the i2C Temperature sensor for VRM.. and hence was shutting down.. that I knocked off with screw driver.. pc is fine now
Why not the Intel ME from bios? In begining not going the fan at full speed.
I'm liking this comment hoping Sorin would read this and try it out.
I am no expert. Just internet citizen with an opinion :). EC chip cut from board is better in my opinion. It lowers the probability of fake EC chip, plus lowers probability of desoldering mistakes. I would prefer this type shipment. Edit: also eliminates bent pin problem.
yes indeed, perfect for shipping long distances.
Some repair people also produce problems themselves by faning away components while using the hot air gun. I recommend to always put Kapton tape parallel to all the sides of the chip to keep the outer components cool and fixed in their location. Maybe a missing component?
5:45 very honest seller. doesn't claim the chip to be new. doesn't risk blowing up the chip by not following the manufacturer heating profile.
No you wrong
The reason is something else 😊
The seller actually claimed the chip to be "New Original"
@@1080pixel how can it be new if its soldered to a PCB lol.
I had a similar problem with a Mac Mini, the fans kept running at full speed and the Mac shut down. After a long search, I had found out that there was a temperature sensor that was broken. After replacing that sensor, the Mac Mini worked perfectly again.
The mac had separate sensor but anther brand not
True story
Or software problem
Yeah, but go find it without a schematic.
fan spin at full speed then shutdown look alike thermal sensor issue, sometime the sensor using resistor, in paralel with capacitor sometime. placed near cpu or gpu or ram with RT marking in lenovo motherboard. just remove the RT resistor and test if the fan still running in full speed.
It could be, Lenovo has weird EC firmware regarding the fan/temp control. Fans will start spin unengaged at the slightest over-temperature spikes
All silicone made in last 10y have these sensors built in, there're sometimes additional one on board but that's rare.
More likely this is faulty fan controller and shutdown is preventive because RPM is not reported to back to software.
@@gorjy9610 Indeed, but if the fan is not speaking back with the EC, the bios show a warning sign at turn on which prevents the laptop from turning on.
@16:48 heatpipe is damage in the center , heatsink was pulled from the sides and bent in the center
I was thinking also that the vapour chambers are empty... so... no dissipation at all..but can be al so a thermal sensor.. or also a bios issue ( i will try with a bios dumped from a working machine ..maybe taken from badcaps forum ) and not from lenovo site. ( P.s. .. tge original bios has a password... but still can be used to see if the laptop is shuttingndown )
If that is a case, it is easy to confirm measuring temperatures in some software like "hardware monitor" or similar
I like your skills, your confidence and your humor my friend. You are a honest man and a very good technician.
I am pretty sure Sorin is not gonna give up this repair without checking temp sensor
and bios reset..
You can try disabling prochot signal on throttlestop if you manage to boot into windows that may stop the shutdown
leaving the chip on the cut pcb protects the pins . easy , cheap and safe
I had Ideapad 520 with EC chip replaced and fan went full blast all the time. It was not shutting down, but kept going on full blast no matter what. Issue was faulty fan. :D In this case, i think there is a thermal sensor issue
I think he send it like that to prove it’s genuine chip and not rebadged.
Seems like overheat protection kick in, perhaps on board temperature sensor damaged, probably because the damaged ITE burn it
Had something similar happen to me once. Turned out to be the tacho-signal from one of the the fans that was missing, so laptop thought fan wasn’t spinning, told both fans to run at full speed, and then gave up, shutting down. Had to use my oscilloscope to figure out what the hell was going on.Laptops should really have a standard group of diagnostic LED’s on motherboard… or something
there might be a workaround for this, enter bios quickly, disable shutdown temperature and set manually the fans speed, might not be beatiful, but it will keep it working as long as the bios battery kept charged.
GPU firmware or thermal sensor circuits are the things I would look at next.
I was try and reprogram bios of nvidia GF 2060, but without success
Wow is nice to receive a pcb with soldered EC... no way pins can be bent during shipping .. no overheating during removal.. and better: an original one for sure.
I've had this very same problem with my exact same Legion 5.
The issue was i replaced the thermal paste with liquid metal, and somehow a tiny amount got on the board.
Not sure which part it was on, I didn't have a microscope to check, so I just disassembled the motherboard, gave it a big scrub with alcohol, and when I was cleaning my brush on paper towel, I saw it had the liquid metal on it.
After cleaning the board it was working perfectly again lol.
Obviously can't be the same issue here, but i thought I'd share my experience.
If you possibly have time to monitor the CPU temperature quickly while its on to see if it is going up even if it really isn't so you know its a sensor issue which is a resistor (marked RT) located near to the CPU.
i was tried. Mine fans are at max some longer time and had time to see CPU and GPU temp. Temps are normal, butt fans are spinning as hell.
Probably a temperature sensor fault. I know this used to happen on Macs (Louis Rossmann showed it a couple of times), but may happen on other brands too. You'd need a schematic to figure out where the sensor is though as well as a boardview to check everything in between...not sure if you can obtain those...
If I were to buy used chips I would actually love to receive it like that, because it means they also didn't rush to remove it with a lot of heat. The chances of the chip being good actually increase in my perspective.
Hi Sorin, as you teach us not alway we can fix, don't worry you do your best thank a lot for sharing bye Francesco Timpano from Florence Italy
I don't think that fault to be software related...
Things I would check:
- On BQ chip, disconnect PROCHOT track coming from CPU.
- Check for a missing pullup resistor on PROCHOT (around CPU and/or PCH).
- Check thermistors (if you can get the schematic or boardview)
Probably the fault is easy to be fixed, but at this point you need more info about the board....
Don't give up!
It's good know when to pick your battles and when to step away. Personally I wouldn't be able to sleep until I found the root of the issue, but then I'm not doing this to support a family.
the thermal sensor is faulty it is signalling the mobo that cpu is getting very hot fan spining at full speed to cool the chips still faulty temp.. due to overheating it's auto shutting down to save the components
The chip was cut probably to not bend the pins or otherwise damage it during transport and the removal from the board, also saving time and money on paying workers and making or purchasing a special container for transportation. You probably got it very cheap.
Good try. But the problem is this ec chip was already from same board and you didnt need to reprogram it since you didnt have any issue with another ec chip too. it was just firmware issue because firmware is using different gpio for thermal sensor and that is why you are having issue and also this is why they are selling ec like that so you can use it on same motherboard without programming it because firmware for these models are difficult to find. so lessons learned. Before doing any kind of programming take backup of your old bios and ec firmwares. even if it comes from china))
You are right 100%
Lol i was thinking same why he didn't take a backup from the bought ec chip
Sorin, try updating the BIOS with the recovery method:
1. Power off the laptop.
2. Unplug everything.
3. Plug in USB with GKCN.bin (the BIOS for the laptop renamed to GKCN.bin).
4. Press and HOLD fn+R keys. (keep holding while doing the next steps.)
5. Plug in power. (If laptop powers on automatically, hold the power button until it shuts off, and start again from Step 2.)
6. Press Power button once. The laptop will turn on and your charger indicator will turn red.
7. Keep holding the fn+R keys until the laptop will start beeping very loudly. You can release the fn+R once it starts beeping.
8. Wait until the laptop reboots itself.
Once it's done, if it works, boot to windows and update bios from windows too, because the EC and BIOS firmware will be mismatched.
@@miajonekem Didn't you watch the video, the laptop shuts off after about a min so not going to be able to update the bios.
@@fickitonetime Would certainly be worth a try. This procedure only requires bios to initialize, which it is clearly doing in the video. If bios has this capability it would not be checking temps (since bios interrupted boot, there is barely anything powered on) so this could work.
I would trust a chip cut from a board more than one looking brand new but a possible fake. Plus is secure for shipping.Plus it comes pre programmed.
There appears to be multiple issues with the fan control on this laptop, especially after updating Windows or the BIOS. Some forums suggest a hard reset / recovery mode (pressing the Novo button during power up, the button with a star and S on it) and then forcing the laptop into quiet mode (Fn + Q ) to see if that makes any difference, shutdown-wise. As another viewer suggested, there may be a fan tacho issue, try connecting just one fan, then the other. As the laptop seems to be relatively stable without the heatsink it seems unlikely to be a thermal sensor issue (in my opinion).
Shows its not fake and/or protected for transport (straight legs)
“Trust your skills” young padwan 😊
In some of the laptops the RPM fan control doesn't work in BIOS. I have try that on a brand new laptops and the fans was working on full speed. But after exiting the rmp control lower the speed.
Interesting
Probably not gonna help but there's this: EC Reset:
press and hold the power button for 30(or 60) secs, release and wait for 5 secs, and turn the laptop on again. laptop will boot with Balance mode on all Legion.
But as you said, it could be anything really, faulty chipset, faulty thermal sensor, faulty fans...
Talking about Honesty. No joy is part of the trade.
As written by the owner... he removed a small chip. Ask him about this chip and where was located.
I have laptop once where gas escape from heat pipe and not chill the cpu. Same symptom with laptop run for about a minute or so and shut down to protect cpu. New cooler fixed it.
It is heatpipe issue. To test if the heatpipe is defective, first completely disassemble the cooling system and then heat the beginning of each pipe with a flame for a few seconds. The whole pipe must be heated uniformly for the system to be good. if the table heats up only where the flame is applied and the rest is cold, then the cooling system is defective and must be replaced.
That pin which was bent on the first chip..two or 3 pins up from that there is a solder bridge between 2 of the pins ..i wonder if this bridge caused a resistor to die on the board which was something to do with the thermal sensing ..
yup 10:18 you can see solder bridge on the third pin from the bottom with fourth pin fron the bottom
I am not fond of Lenvo either. My only thoughts regarding your issue is to reinsert the original ssd or time when the fans comes on....seems to come on at tge exact same time with or without the ssd, biosor windows. My wife and I get a big kick out watching you as well as leaning thank you for doing what you do.
just clean Bios ME region. it will fix 100%
thanks for your video.
Come on... it's and AMD machine... no ME region on this eeprom.
come on man work your magic on this one i think its about a temp sensor but im not an expert. hope you will find it.
i agree with others. the temperature reading must be faulty. if the windows starts, there is a oportunity to see the temperature data.
Lose pins or burnt resistor could cause bad i2c signal , I would start by checking all the pins make contact then check the dat sheet of the EC chip to figure out the I2C SCL and SDA signals
Look in the bios (or Windows) if the cpu temp is plausibel, else you have temp sensor issue.
Very disheartening, so much time and effort, with a unhappy ending. Paul, USA!
Sounds more like broken resistor or temperature diode of the cpu or gpu or could be a low resistance or shorted filter cap which prevents the EC from reading the temperature
Isn't there sensors for heat ? you should check the temperator in the bios. if it's not correct try to see if there is some bad resistors.
yeah really no idea why he doesn't run some sort of hw monitor to check temps. or at least in bios it should show
@@Nebbia_affaraccimiei i did it on same model with same problem. CPU and GPU temp are normal, but fans running as hell
It's a thermal issu. Mostly ntc below cpu, ntc is bad, power rail is not working. It could be a bad fet on ntc line
The problem is not in the EC chip, the problem is in the cooling unit because CPU temperature exceeds 70 degrees during boot and when cooling system does not work properly , temp keep raing until he will shut down
Fix the temp sensor circuit, wherever that is (inside an ic?)
great work you're the best
In a comment on a previous clip about programming an IT..., someone made the following observation "You programmed 128KB instead of 192KB. Once the chip is detected, you need to select its size "button CONFIG ITE". Did you not repeat the same mistake?
I'm a big fan of your work right from when I was in Nigeria 🇳🇬
Baba where you leave us go?

Sorin, the cable between main board and small usb board next to CMOS battery seems to be shifted...maybe it is shorting...
Thats either a gpu or cpu issue , course any other components connected to those too might be the problem too , most likely to be a short in cpu causing over the roof overheating
Replace the thermal pads on the cooling block and see if it solves the issue of the fan running at full speed.
Temp sensor resistor gone had exact same on a rog with similar ec few months ago. Lucky as years ago fixed this on an Xbox 360 slim knew roughly where to look on schemes 😄
exactly the same problem on legion 5-15ARH05H. i tried reprogram bios (main and EC), reprogram bios of GF2060 too...fans are on their maximum, but CPU temp , GPU temp is normal (CPU 50-70 C, GPU 35-45 C). Also, with this model is s many problems, unexplained.....i know this form tons of forums.
Salut. verifica temperaturile in bios sau daca nu poti face asta localizeaza si verifica senzori de temperatura. banuiesc caci vede o temperatura foarte ridicata si se inchide pt protectie!
I think you should program bios and ec chip both by worked files
This could be a thermal sensor issue. However, I always replace the motherboard as long as it is a motherboard issue.
Poate e o problema la senzorii de temperatura!
Thats ok master🎉 your the best.😁
Had the same issue with a L460 and never figured it out. It just turned of after exactly 10s but was working fine otherwise. I expected it to be some issue with a power good signal or something the EC chip checks.
Something is wrong with the temperature sensor circuits.
had similar problem with alienware had to replace processor in the end PCIe issues
I had, a very similar issue with the same laptop, try turn it on without the small USB daughter board to the right. it has some reset button that some time behave weird
I'm not sure about how the temperature is being sensed on this laptop but it might be be a thermistor somewhere connected to the EC chip or some other chip maybe that thermistor is faulty or burnt and giving false signals to the EC to shut the laptop down because of overheating because a laptop can sense when cooling is bad and shuts off the laptop if a thermistor is burnt that would make sense.
So think here: the temperature sensor wrongly registers off limit cpu/gpu temperature level and goes in protective mode. So check the sensor is working ?
Is it me or the heatpipes are bent? faulty heatsink, heat cannot transfer to the fans and computer shut itself down to protect cpu and gpu?
sorin when you changed yesterday the ec chip i saw trouh the scope ....2 pins from the ec chip seemed that were touching
He showed it at 10:14
Heat sensor issue; i think washing prosser with water and soap and let it dry until next day will fix problem like i had with my own laptop.
fans at 100% and then shutting down often means corrupted ME Region. Save/dump bios image from motherboard and then clean ME Region
Cheaper and quicker to use small chop saws on a bench and cut the component out than to desolder. There's also no danger of causing harm to the chip but I doubt the Chinese are worried about that.
Looking on how the ram pins are cutter... is showing the use of a precise CNC to cut the board.
This is a lovely board 🤣🤣
Lenovo : BIOS update and power manager (if BIOS/EC thermal control logic has issues)
I turfed a lenovo tonight. If Sorin cant fix a legion, i stand no chance. Lol. Parting it out ill recover what i can. Soent way to much time on it
Same like the ones that we upgrade from dual core to i series and shuts down after 30 mins, software problem, shelf it and when you get same model same specs just copy firmware from that one to this one
It's easy for me to say, since it's not my income stream, but I would need to find the source of the shutdown control. Presumably a temp sensor logic. I'd run HWInfo or similar to see which device is showing fake news and track it from there. I'm just OCD about finding the fault and that's my next steps since it's booting
Sorin, you can see that the piece from the chip you have that is cut has the exact same cut marks as the picture on the seller's website so they took a picture of that chip and sent it to you haha.
I had the same issue on a different lenovo model, I scrapped the board
So i had a similar problem as this laptop. I bought a replacement board off ebay. A Dell ryzen. I set it up and when it started the fans ran at full speed and then turned off. gave me an error message about the fans. got the board serial number and checked on dell. it had a bought protection for repair and used the secure?? program. so it was blocked. i noticed you didnt hook up the wireless card. somehow they can talk to "home" even if you dont connect to your network. then i discovered that the bios writes the ec chip and possibly stores the secure?? info, I used that to get a brand new board from dell. this one i am currently using. seems that is an old board as i looked and found that it has an 2080 video. but it sure acts as if it has that secure?? enabled. get into bios and check for board id number and see if lenovo has the same program. then a good bios would maybe allow a fix. good luck
I think there is a problem with the screen cable or it is burnt..Or a stuck button in Keyboard or a virus in the BIOS file. Try to enter Windows from Safe Mode
Sorin, try again! There are temperature sensors on motherboad
Btw what temperature and what fan speed can you see in bios?
Interesting, because I’ve got na older laptop, Lenovo Z510 with exact same issue. This problem happened with original EC chip. I ordered spare EC chip but I’ve broke the chip’s pins and left if for later…
Lovely machine. I pray I will find the bios bin files for the same laptop legiony7000p. I have kept mine for some time now.
Max fun spinning means you do not have discrete graphic card in system
Rosin not that expensive. Sorry if its rude because you sell rosin. But i found "Mechanic X9 Rosin Flux" to be really good quality. Possibly X Grade. I am in Canada so was trying to find a supply of X grade and found the mechanic X9 Product. It looks like your stuff and doesnt burn when you dip your iron.
temp sensor issue triggering the shutdown
I've found that sometimes the manufacturing process (on some of these laptops) is so bad that the cost to repair just isn't worth the cost to replace......
They are doing so to show the buyers that it is a original chip and it ain't counterfeit
Seems that i2c isn’t reporting the temperature correctly
us1 ve us134 board id termal sensor sorunu. değiştirin sorun ortadan kalkacaktır ve rts 2,3,4
On new chips . Temperature probe is embeded into the chip... Most likely a cpu is faulty..
Any luck with the thermal camera? worth a shot. Seems like something is overheating. Is there a PCH chip?
I’ve received several salvage parts from china just like that. It must be easier to just cut them out or something.
Check if the heatpipe aren't broken, i can see a bent, broken heatpipe = no heat transfert
