    Wow, this is an insane throwback. This was the family computer that I used to play TF2 and Minecraft on at a freakishly low framerate up until we finally ditched it in 2011 or 2012. The single gigabyte of RAM that someone put in it may have gotten windows XP pretty far back then, but by 2010 just about every program would run out of RAM constantly and would either slow to a crawl or outright crash.

    • @sanjaydanoob5854
      @sanjaydanoob5854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is because the thinner the speaker the worse it sounds, and since laptops are getting thinner and thinner, you may want some external speakers or a headset.

      Laptops from this era are some of my all time favorites plus some are very easy to work on and upgrade plus they are generally better made so they can take a lot of abuse without breaking down.

    • @saladfox
      @saladfox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the laptops are so bulky, they put huge drivers in (at least for a laptop). Modern laptops definitely have the advantage of fancy engineering tricks to get good sound out of smaller speakers, but for the time these sounded amazing compared to the barely-usable speakers included in most laptops of the era.

    • @MrKillswitch88
      @MrKillswitch88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@saladfox To be honest the vast majority of modern laptops are crap with almost no options at all for upgrades and even worse repairability. Hell some of them are not even comfortable to use due to the poor thermals where it is easily 60c on the bottom panel while parts of the keyboard can reach 45-50c on some models under load.

    holy shit that’s my first laptop! my parents had one from 2004-2011 and it worked really well until then, it had funny display issues where you had to hit the side of it to get it to stop pixelating what was on screen. i still have it however the charger is long gone and it got damaged further a few years ago when we were renovating

    • @saladfox
      @saladfox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like the display cable is loose or damaged. Not terribly hard to fix- just reseat the cable, or replace it if that doesn't fix it. If it's your first computer, it'd definitely be worth restoring!

    Very similar to my first laptop, and old handed down HP XP machine from a Gen older than this, ~2003. Loved that old thing with its fantastic huge screen and keyboard.
    Unfortunately that era of HP laptop had a recurring problem where the power jack would go bad very quickly, meaning the poor old thing was tied to a chunky docking station. I’m moving and couldn’t keep all of my machines so it went to the thrift shop today for someone else to fix up and enjoy.

    Not sure what glue you used, but I think a metal adhesive such as JB-Weld might have been much better, as that glue is tailored for metal repairs. People have used it to repair engines for decades here in the US. I have 2 HP laptops from a few years earlier (circa 2001) & are related to the zv5000, that being the ze5170 & the ze5501us. Both of them were given to me for free from a relative. I did some repairs to the 5501 & used it as my main general-use laptop for many years & it still works today.

    I have had two of these machines in my time. They report to Windows as an Athlon XP, however it is really a Athlon 64 with the 64Bitness disabled. As far as I know this is one of the few units to ship with the short lived mobile nForce 3 chipset. The nForce 3 did not have integrated graphics available and needed a external AGP GPU to power its display, hence the Geforce video chipset.

    This is back when HP had a great name. I had the DV 7 I think. Mine was slimmer, 17 inch screen and i still remember it being black with silver around the keyboard. I loved that thing.

    I believe this laptop actually shares the same chassis as the Compaq R3000 and some HP Compaq business notebooks from the time. The bottom is very similar to my nx9110, although the internals on this are a little more modern. Nice save, though!

    I have a laptop similar to that, still works great. (If you were wondering, it is a Compaq 8510w)

    I got a neat super expensive old Dell Precision laptop from the XP Era, like Vista XP era. Core 2 Extreme, I think I got it to hold 8GB of ram, dedicated Quadra card, chassis built like a tank, and the best part, I paid 25¢ for it.

    I remember seeing these in Harvey Norman back in the day and thinking these were end game laptops! Perfect for CSSource and equivalent!

    My go-to modern browser for old XP is the Pale Moon-based version of Mypal. I was able to reskin the browser as a Firefox 3 (GUI and name), making it period-accurate-ish for my nostalgia VM.

    I got a sister model of this, the HP Pavilion zx5000 with a mobile Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz, mobile Radeon 9200 64MB, 1.5GB of RAM and a 150GB HDD. Still works great!
    Sad HP drops complete support for some hardware after a while on their site, gets hard to find proper drivers and documentation for all the different kind of hardware some laptop ranges like this can come with.

    If you want to use Internet on Windows XP now a days in the most stable way, Sea Monkey is an option. It's a pretty optimised Browser for Windows XP and I even ran TH-cam on 512MB RAM with a Pentium D.

    Before my family and I moved, we had a similar laptop, I messed around with it and wanted to get it working but we got rid of it. It had a pentium 4, some amount of ram, and Radeon mobile 9000 graphics, it was nice though

    I took one of these (well, a zv6000, but looked identical) from the dump a while ago, it had a weird proprietary charger connector so I sold the thing off to some hobbyist. Indeed a chunky laptop.

    I had an Acer laptop which also was chunky, and has a gray color. (probably silver but there was so much dust) and i even remember booting this boy up and playing Minecraft in 12FPS 😂...
    I had it from 2017 to 2020 when it just didn't wanna work. Quite sad to see it go...
