    Just subscribed. Owned the 300 for a couple years and this was very helpful. I never used the 2 pedal due to the high tech I.T. instructions in the manual That are explained in binary brain language instead of simple easy to understand instructions from smart people like yourself. Everything I have learned to do with the Boss 300 was either trial and error or TH-cam Looper interpreters. Thanks again Bro.

    Thank you for all your hard work in producing these videos, they are extremely helpful. I had one follow up note for this rhythm video. If you want to set the FX Pedal up to toggle between 2 Rhythm patterns you must make sure that FX type is set to Transpose and that Transpose value is set to 0, otherwise when you hit the FX Pedal what ever effect was active will be applied to your phrase. It appears the FX Pedal cannot be overridden, therefore it must neutralized.

    I frequently use the Alesis SR18 synched to the MIDI start signal on the RC-300 if I want more realism in the rhythm track. Of course this introduces a whole new set of variables, and typically I just program the entire drum track to run from beginning to end when the start signal is received. This does not allow you to spontaneously change or extend the song when you're playing. I'm sure there are ways to get around this by using patterns but I haven't experimented too much in that area.

    Funny you should mention that - I'm forming a band right now. When we first started it was just me and the drummer, and we thought that with the RC-300 we could have a duo. But he found it impossible to play along with the loop station - even the slightest bit of variation in tempo and everything would fall apart. I'd heard people say this before, and it turns out it's quite true. Usually the drummer has a hard time hearing the tempo if it's being generated by something other than his snare.

    Very useful, thanks, I've been trying to get my head around the assign functions and this is making it clearer. But is it possible to set the control loop pedal to switch the drums on and off at will rather than just turn the volume down..its sometimes nice to be able to stop the drums and bring them back in but I've not worked out a good way to do that.

    Been looking for a way to do this for over a year! Thank you. I use prerecorded loops on a number of my songs and couldn't find a way to pull the drums in and out (let alone patch another sequence) This helped me out with a huge pain point on
    my RC300. Thanks again

  • @rinkadon

    Thanks from Leeds UK - just bought one of these and it's been great to watch all these walk-throughs: I've been putting them all into action and they've been a great help. Keep making 'em!
    In return may I recommend to you the Skinny Little Twins, produced by Vein-Tap (UK)? These are a pair of momentary switches in one small pedal, very like the Roland FS-6 but with no latch function. They have a stereo out and plug right into the back of the RC-300, so you can get your pattern toggle or phrase memory switching into your feet without losing your FX or swell pedal! At today's rate of exchange they're £19 ($30) a pop, which is very cheap for a handwired pedal. I've bought one and I think I'll get another - then I'll have dedicated pedals for pattern switching/memory switching/FX switching & one other - to be assigned ;-)
    Thanks again. :-D

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ruben, I understand your question. The rhythm is not recorded, it is just played along with whatever else is playing. You could look at it like the rhythm is a separate track, or a completely independent function. Even if you recorded something with the rhythm playing, if you uploaded that WAV file via USB and played it on the computer, the drums would not be there. Make sense?

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, that's a great observation! I haven't gone back and experimented with it yet, but it does sound like one of those little Roland gotcha's! So the system is defaulted to a configuration that does not make the inter-dependence evident, but it is a likely scenario that someone might select a different effect and be baffled by the results. In the huge number of combinations & permutations of product testing - lots of stuff gets missed by Q.A. Cheers, Bruce

    Look at my video on using the DAW and file upload/download. The RC-300 can also control an external drum machine like the Alesis SR18 that you've pre-programmed, via the MIDI Sync Out. You can sync/trigger the drum machine for live performance, or record its output on one of the tracks, record it into a DAW and split it up into sections, and download the files to the RC-300, etc. Not sure there is a way to broadcast a setting for all patches. Probably have to set up your favorites by hand.

      Hello there, thanks for these videos! I'm interested in upgrading from the RC-30 to the 300. But there are some things I'm not sure of and I am hoping it will be compatible to me. I'm a singer/songwriter and I am curious on how to record verse,prechorus and chorus tracks in realtime when performing live? Also say I have a prechorus and a chorus that has two different rhythm & bass arrangements? How can I get these to transition smoothly and sequentially? I have the Alesis SR18, is this capable of connecting to the RC 300 and being in sync with the music? And can it transition from prechorus to chorus even if the bass and percussion changes slightly? I'm really stuck on this. Thank you.

    Hi Bruce
    Firstly thanks for your great videos which are helping me get to grip with my new toy - the RC300! I wonder if you could do a video showing how you can sync the RC300’s tempo to match an external Midi drum machine (in particular - Beat Buddy) I have watch another video on TH-cam but it is nowhere as clear and straightforward as yours. Hope you - or someone else can help with this. Cheers Mel

    I had a look at this because I've got an RC-50 and wanted to know if the rhythm sounds are better on the RC-300. It seems not; they're both equally flat and lacking in any depth at all! It means I need to use a separate drum machine which isn't a big issue in itself but what is an issue is switching the drum machine on or off mid-song.

  • @BrianBeuken

    Hi Bruce, thanks for the reply but again that's just killing the volume so they are stull going through their sequence just not audible. I need to start and stop on demand. I need to make a pause then restart when I want...I can't seem to find a way to do that.
    or have I misunderstood?

  • @carlosdultra732
    @carlosdultra732 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hello Clay!😬
    Is there any way to make the rhythm NOT stop when all tracks are paused?
    Do you know if there is any independent way to control the rhythm of the RC-300? Maybe using the FS5 pedal, or the FX pedal, or the EXP1 pedal.
    Thanks in advance.
    Your videos are great!!! Congratulation!!!

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can set the FX pedal to toggle, rather than momentary, and that will stop the drums until you press the pedal again. But it sounds like you want the drum sequence to start over from the start rather than just pick up from where it happens to be in the sequence. This might not work as well as you think, as restarting the drums even few milliseconds early/late basically kills the song. Knowing this, they ensure that the drum pattern always starts up in sync with the current measure.

  • @GranLuiZ
    @GranLuiZ 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, the thing is that the RC 300 is always sinchronized with the tempo, that shows 3 green lights and 1 red, as measures of 4/4, I cant record a single sound made by one "tap" that is to say one green or red light without having the full measure so that when I press STOP, stops immediately, without waiting the full measure to finish..

    I have watched 2 of your videos. Nicely done. I own a Boomerang looper - very simple but great sound. I find that when playing with the boomerang, (since it doesn't record) I make too many mistakes setting up a song and it takes too long. People seem to be talking and losing interest. With this RC300, I can pre-record my songs, set up all the parameters, and then when I am at the gig, just dial up the pre-set, click and start playing. Can you demonstrate recording the drums, rhythm, and whatever else you do and how you retrieve it when playing live? I want to plug and play and only have to dial in the number and do all the other "STUFF" at home. also, picking up a used one seems like the best option for me. Also, can you set this up with harmonies as well or is this just for instruments? Thanks in advance, Jon

  • @HarrisonsGX
    @HarrisonsGX 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    And just to clarify: I don't want to loop the drum machine because that reduces the flexibility with each track that I need for multi-part, multi-instrument songs.

    Bruce - My RC-300 is at Ver 1.05, Rev 1837, UVer 1.01. I cannot save/write the playback level when I set it by way of Track Edit. I have to manually adjust it every time... The same thing goes for the rhythm level, it has to be set manually every time ... It will not save when I write.. I have tried this many many times with the same result... Do you think I should try reinstalling my firmware?

  • @pmruss1
    @pmruss1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for your earlier reply Bruce and I did figure this out with your help. My question today is whether or not I can start the rhythm (drums) without bending down for the button.There are times in my performance where I need to leave drums running after stopping tracks, such as an accapella verse over drums or for transitioning back to live play for an outro or something. The only thing I can figure is to record drums on a track (usually track 3) and then I can move to drums only. Obviously this takes out one of my tracks limiting me to 2. Your instruction about putting rhythm on EX1 for volume is good but when I kill the looping track (hoping to end up with drums only) it also kills the drums. Any ideas?

    • @clayhorsemusic
      @clayhorsemusic  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patrick, you've pretty well characterized the situation (unfortunately). Even just starting the rhythm by itself at the beginning of a song is a nuisance enough, but mid-song is a real problem. No way I've figured out how to do it. It has to do with the way the rhythm function (really in internal, synched drum machine) works. I've even thought about getting a wooded dowel with a door stopper on one end to poke the button while I'm standing up. Not pretty, eh? ~bb

  • @clayhorsemusic

    To check the firmware rev number of your unit:
    1. Turn power OFF
    2. Set Master Level volume knob to 0
    3. Set all Track Volume faders to 0
    4. Set Rhythm Level to 0
    5. Press & hold Rhythm Edit & Tap Tempo buttons
    6. Power up unit.
    The first number will be the firmware rev.The current download from Roland is ver 1.05. If you've got rev 1.00 or rev 1.01, just follow the download instructions carefully and you should be able to update your system to current levels. Hopefully that will fix it.

    How can I set up the rhythm out so it doesn’t go off when I stop a loop? Currently, my rhythm is going out my sub only to my wireless mixer, then to my iem. I’m using they rhythm as a metronome in my in ears, but it stops when I stop my loop, I want it to keep going for the whole song, independent of the loop buttons. If you can point me in the correct direction, I’d. Appreciate it. Thanks

    Hey man,
    Awesome video, thanks! Something I'm really beating my head against a wall with at the moment:
    Is there any way of simply assigning the rhythm section to a pedal? For example, I'm building backing tracks essentially to play over live. I'm using the RC300s rhythm effects as my drummer. I want Track 1 to control the drums, Track 2 to be my rhythm guitar, Track 3 to be my lead riff etc.
    At the moment if the Rhythm is turned on it will play whenever I turn any pedal on, over the top of whatever I have already recorded on there. If it is off, it will not play on any, even if it were turned on when I originally recorded the clip.
    Is there any way to control the rhythm on/off using a track pedal. I'd like to be able to turn the rhythm off with my foot, leaving the rhythm playing for example, at my convenience. Apparently the only way to do that at the moment is to reach down and press the tiny button!
    Thanks

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can't do anything in measurements of less than one bar. However, you can "fool it" by turning Loop Sync Off for that track, and select Loop Type of One Shot. Then you can record even just one note, and anytime you press the Play switch it will play that note, then stop. Maybe that's a work-around. But your timing has to be accurate when you press Play, because it will play at any time, regardless of where the other loops are in their sequence.

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 505 is a beatbox/dub/DJ/rap machine, so I'm not particularly interested in delving into it. There might be come control and logistical issues integrating it with the RC300 (no pedals) but I'm sure it's feasible at some level. I wish the RC300 had 5 tracks instead of 3. I'm using it in Single Track Mode mostly, and often wish I could have 1)intro 2)verse 3)chorus 4)bridge and 5)ending. I usually have to end up doing something sort of tricky, like the ending in my ZZ Top Legs video.

  • @clayhorsemusic
    @clayhorsemusic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not? It might fix it. In my experience it is very improbable (but not impossible) that just one or two functions will fail without multiple other things obviously not working as well. I always consider pilot error to be the most probably cause when I encounter something like you're describing. But it could be some subtle thing not so easy to track down. I'd make a list of all the functions that are not working. Test everything. Then a picture will emerge - hardware problem or not? ~bb

    Hey clayhorsemusic love the videos. Do you know how to set up the rhythm section to give one bar count in before I start recording? I need it to play one measure count in then I have a 16 measure loop to record after that. I tried setting it to one measure count in which did work however the loop started playing back after one measure. Obviously I don't want the count in measure as part of the loop. Thanks for your time!

      You can very easily do that. Export it from whatever you use to make your beat (Logic/Garage band, etc) as a 16 Bit wav file with 44,100 sample rate. Then plug in your RC 300 with a USB cable, then drag and drop your file into the desired channel.

    Bruce - I have had one problem, when I try to reduce my playback level through the track edit method I cannot get the new level to save into memory, ie, I set playback level to 60 and write, write. If I go to another phrase and then come back my level is back at 100... Any comment...

    For effects you can select input, any of the 3 tracks, all tracks or tracks+rhythm, but I don't see a selection for rhythm only. Seems like there should be one, but there's not.

    Is there a way to change the Rhythm from 4/4 to 2/4? For instance, I used "Simple Beat 1" for a song but I'm trying to set up a one time bridge on a song and it's 6 and 1/2 measures long at 4/4. No matter what I do, it keeps adding those 2 extra beats before I can get it to go back to track 1. I out it on "free" but still didn't help. Any suggestions?

    Yes, I have a video called "RC-300: Single Track Mode". Go to the13:05 minute mark and I'll show you how to do that. ~Bruce

    I would like to monitor the RC-300 Rhythm track through headphones without it being audible to audience. Is it possible in RC 300 ? Thanks

    Hi Bruce, thank you for all of your tips and tricks! I've found your videos super helpful in building my setup. It's basically a "Super Looper" with a ton of gear. I just posted an original track called "Dreamer", I'd appreciate it if you'd stop by and let me know what you think :) And for all of you loopers out there just getting started, if you have any questions about my setup or the RC-300 let me know. Cheers, and happy looping! Jeremy

    hello clayhorse i need to apply delay effect only to rhythm pattern recorded on track 3, how do i go about doing that.

      Set your FX: Target to Trk3 for using the delay effect on playback, or you can record the rhythm pattern wet onto Trk3 , using FX: Target = INPUT with the delay active. That way you're free to use the FX for something else when you're playing live, like a flanger on your guitar.

    Hi Bruce, a couple of questions. I like to set rhythm (drums) to output to SUB, so that it doesn't go through the PA system connected to MAIN. I normally record one bar of drums on Track 3 so I can start and stop them as I need to. When performing live I want to be able to record and loop without again recording the drums on 1 or 2. When recording live I end up with drums on other loops which put drums back to my MAIN OUT and through the PA system. Is there any way to your knowledge to keep the drums out of live recording and ultimately on the SUB?

      Patrick, well first check to make sure about what's really happening when you say you record the drums onto Track 3. The rhythm function is independent and plays in parallel with the memory, synched by the BPM and drum pattern you've selected. But getting the drums to come out of the SUB only is easy - just go to the System menu button, click the right arrow 11 times, and assign the Rhythm output to SUB. Since this is a System function, however, it will apply to all songs, not just the one you're working on. ~bb

    Sure, I'll try and get to that in the next couple days - soon as I get my camera back from my wife! I think I know exactly what your problem is - it has to do with configuring the FX pedal to activate the effects. Otherwise it will never be activated. I've got a busy schedule the next couple of days, but look for it Friday. ~Bruce

    Unfortunately the RC-300 does not have in its rhythm module the ability to stop/start. Manipulating the volume level as a workaround has one drawback, syncing back to your live performance. If you paused in your perform for effect - the drum will be not be synced.
    A firmware update to add a stop/play function for rhythm would be the solution. Having the stop/play would allow the first beat to trigger when you activate the controller (pedal).
    I would suggest getting a dedicated drum machine which you can save, download and create your own drum patterns.

      Bobcatt22 Actually, I think I have a much simpler solution for you... I always use track 1 on my RC 300 to record 2 full bars of the rythym and loop it. Doing this, you can stop and start the drums as you would any other looped track. This is how I perform almost every song in my setlist. Since none of my guitars don't respond well to percussive tapping, I prefer to use the drums on the pedal as opposed to setting percussion beats with the guitar. Plus, it allows for electrified performances for a higher energy show rather than always having to play solo acoustic. Find me at Maven Jamz Music on FB...

      By the way, this video is going to totally change the way I approach using the pedal's drums from now on. Controlling the drums with the expression pedal is going to allow me a third track to work with. So thank you for sharing! Good day sir! 🖒
