Is Your Turkey Choke Too Tight? TESTED Short + Long Range

- Does your turkey ammo pattern too tight? Turkey hunters usually aim for the tightest possible choke to get maximum pattern density at 40 or 50 yards but that is causing hunters to miss turkeys at short ranges because the patterns have no margin of error. Here I test BOSS Tom TSS at 20 yards and 50 yards with Muller Decoy, Passing, and UFO chokes. The results are surprising, for hunting over decoys a cylinder or modified choke is much better than a tight turkey choke tube. Most turkeys are shot at short to long range which means choking for the tightest possible pattern at long range can cause hunters to miss more turkeys at close range than it helps them get far away.

This test was done with BOSS ammo because of the high payload but the idea is the same for any other ammo brand such as Winchester Long Beard, Remington Nitro Turkey, Federal TSS, APEX TSS, HEVI Shot HEVI-18 TSS, Herters TSS, and many others. These principles are also true for all chokes such as factory chokes, Carlson's chokes, Patternmaster, Indian Creek, and many others. #turkeyhunting #gobblers

The passing choke got it right...tight at 40 but not to much at 25 yard.
A very important subject to discuss is oil or no oil in your gun barrel. Any body know...some of us know but a lot don't know. Wd 40 or gun oil or none detergent 30 weight motor oil or no oil at all. What is the answer. Love your scientific videos George. This would be a very good video. Thanks Ironman in Alabama 73s
Missed a double last Saturday morning with a buddy. I’m sure it was user error but Damn I was Shocked…. 13 steps and a not a dead bird ? Definitely got me thinking
Yea, those pellets would definitely do the job at that range if they hit. But this happens all the time. More likely to miss at close range for sure.
This is a secret waterfowl video to me. I hunted last year almost exclusively w a Muller Passing out of my Benelli w TSS. First, my gun choke did appear to perform Amy better than the factory full with TSS.
Second., looking at your results the Passing in gun is a very versatile choke for both turkey and waterfowl. It shoots very much a full pattern and really balances pellets in the kill zone over the other two chokes at birth 10 and larger circle.
The decoy choke is very much a waterfowl choke/IC. More than enough at 20 yards, but for turkey and my waterfowl with there is no guarantee. I would be happy with what I am seeing to 40ish yards for waterfowl.
I actually got another Muller Passing to try.
Another great video! Look folks if you haven't subscribed....subscribe!! This man's shoulder has took a beating for us for a long time and the content is excellent. Thanks and keep em coming!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it.
Another great video. Ive been running XRs w a modified choke for years now. I just personally prefer them inside 30 yards to begin with but can go to 45 if i have to. Last couple have been inside of 15 yards.
Nice!
Appreciate the videos brother
Thanks for watching!
fantastic video.
much appreciated
Thank you!
I’ve recently been on a kick at looking into double barrel guns for turkey hunting. Why be forced to find a compromise when you can have a choke for close to medium and a choke for far shots. Use some combination of 9, 9.5, or 10 shot for close and shoot an 8/9 blend for longer shots (8/9 blend seems to be the secret sauce for a TIGHT pattern). If you hunt mixed woodlands or out west where birds can legitimately walk out in your lap or you can get busted at 300 yards, you don’t always get to choose your optimal distance.
Its a brilliant plan actually. I've been thinking more and more about it myself.
The turkey o/u from cz is a great. Quick select the barrel/choke combo holding the best shell for given ranges.
I really like what you're doing with all the testing and great information. Do you think different constrictions effect velocity and penetration? It makes sense to me that a tighter choke would slow down the shot more
I don't think so, but functionally it probably doesn't matter. You can't use an open choke at the distances a few more fps might help. So for the hunter, you just choke for the pattern you need.
Thanks for the video. I introduced two friends to your channel!
Thanks do much Ben!
Already got my two for the spring. First was 30 yards and second was 60. Ironically using Boss tom and muller ufo 😂
Nice! Congrats!
My average is between 35-45 yds hunting open hardwoods, open pine, and clear cuts so I like to keep mine tight with a 9/10 blend so the closer is also manageable. The closer they are the lower on the neck I aim.
Nice. 9/10 is a potent load.
Never heard of using #9 for turkey I always figured #5 was a good load hmmm.
#9 TSS is the standard. You're thinking of lead #5. The two are comparable in terms of ballistic performance. But the #9 does it in a much smaller pellet with many more in the shell.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide thanks for the insight
When are you going to do a collaboration video or podcast with Titus from MVM?
I don't know much about them honestly. I've only listened to the interviews with Jimmy Muller.
This man talks too much but talks good and experimental 😊
2 things: 1. Got to do this with Winchester Longbeard XR. 2. Were those 2.5 oz loads kicking?lol
This video was the precursor th-cam.com/video/MDMnnm5v5gQ/w-d-xo.html the LB didn't do as hot as expected with the wide open chokes. But 6s might have done better. Modified would probably be way better for that and most TSS loads. This shells were REALLY kicking after about the 3rd shot. The first one or two were ok. After that, I was feeling it.
Just saying, I really think you should include the barrel length in your videos. You know I would really like to see a video unexplained choke size construction
Barrel length has nothing to do with patterns. Constriction (chokes) make the pattern.
@@TheDks300 true it doesn’t matter that much when you’re shooting expensive TSS. but when it comes down to shooting simple lead like Longbeard XR I find having any extra inches helps
@@MiguelCarole it doesn’t matter even with lead. Perhaps lengthened forcing cones can help with a smoother transition to the choke but many barrels are made with standard, short cones regardless of length. Choke is literally the variable that matters, barrel length does not effect patterning or at least not statistically so.
I've probably said it'd a Mossberg 940 pro turkey with 24" barrell topped with a holosun 507k red dot so many times in so many videos that I say it in my sleep, lol. Not sure how I forgot to mention it here.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide I wasn’t wondering what the barrel length was I’m just saying for new people that come to the channel that may not know. Thanks for your time.
I have a Winchester sxp long beard edition and it came with winchesters xtra full turkey choke and I tried the boss Tom and it blew the pattern all over about a 3 foot piece of cardboard. Could that be what’s happening here is the choke it too tight?
Also this was at 40 yards. Only about 80 pellets in a 10 in circle
Yea, the BOSS Tom does best at .670 or more open. It's doesn't like too much choke. Apex is similar.
Also the heavier the load (Boss loads theirs very heavy) the more open the choke you need to prevent blowing it, the lighter the load the more constriction you need.
Thanks guys. It’s doing really well with federal heavy weight and I took a tom last week with it. I’ll probably switch to the ufo for the rest of the season to run the boss
@@user-qb3dt4wv9t Congrats!
14 yards for me this year. Last year 8 yards.
This year was about 12, last year about 15. I still carry Long Beard XR, but last year and this year, I used my own 1 3/8 oz. hand loads. I could have used skeet loads at hose ranges. My personal limit, even with XR, is 40 yds. I know my 1 3/8 oz. #6 loads will do the job at 30 yds. The Number One lesson from all New Hunters Guide videos is pattern _your_ gun with _your_ choke and _your_ shells.
Preach it!
What choke are you using for those?
@@TheNewHuntersGuide carlsons extended turkey choke, I think it’s .050 constriction. Using 20 guage Frderal game loads 2.75” 7/8 oz number 6 shot.

I sometimes wonder if this guy is a hunter or a killer…
This morning it was just a hunter. Only saw 1 hen, and heard no gobbles.
