    You either need 1 shotgun. Or You need your sporting clay gun, skeet gun, trap gun, duck gun, goose gun, grouse gun, wood cock gun, You and should also have these in a combination of 12, 20 16 and 28G, You need some to be SXS, some OU and a few semi auto as well. You should also have a pump that is extra noisy to deter any one from trespassing.

    I started with a 12 gauge Ithaca single shot when I was fifteen. I bought a used Savage 16gauge over under when I was nineteen. I used both of them for whatever I hunted. When I was twenty years old in 1974. I bought a Remington 870 with a full choke barrel and a slug barrel for deer hunting. I also bought a Beretta AL2 12 gauge auto. It had a full choke barrel. I bought it because it looked really nice. It was a pound or two lighter than the 870 so I used it whenever I could in place of the 870. I used the slug barrel on the 870 for hunting in the woods. They were improved cylinder choke so they worked well in the woods. The one I had was 21'' long. In 1993 I bought a Ruger over under in 20 gauge and that became my most of the time shotgun. The Remington 870 and the Savage over under were both sold because I never used them anyway after I bought the over under. In 2022 I bought a 12 gauge Franchi Instinct SL that is now my do everything shotgun. I like break action shotguns because they can have a 28" barrel and be about the same length as an auto or pump with a 24" barrel. They can be made safe by simply breaking them open. I like how they look too.

    Interchangeable chokes definitely help to reduce the number you need, but as an old fart who's been around for a while, you used to want, at minimum, a blind/passing, a goose/turkey, and a field shotgun. Throw in backups and other special-purpose shotguns, and you start to develop a long list.

    My experience is this:
    For those with limited budget and isn’t hardcore into shooting sports I suggest a Remington 870 combo. It will cover any bird hunting from waterfowl, upland, turkey etc. the combo slug barrel will cover deer and of hogs. It is also fine for shooting sports (trap, sporting clays and skeet).
    I probably have 10 different shotguns using an OU for sporting and upland and a Vinci for waterfowl. I also use the Vinci for turkey. Sometimes rotate others for upland or sporting but having near a dozen I really use 3 of them 90% of the time. I have a dedicated slug gun with a scope (Mossberg) but lately have been using a .350 rifle because I can mount my can on it for deer.

    My current setup, which I do love, is a Mossberg 835 with a 20” barrel and open sights. I’ve got a separate scoped barrel for deer season so the 835 will still cover my deer hunting needs as well as being a backup for my new dedicated turkey shotgun.

    You need a rabbit gun a squirrel gun a pheasant gun a duck / goose gun a deer gun a turket gun .
    then you need to cover trap skeet and sporting clays And then you need them in 12 ,16 ,20 ,410 .. you can add 28 gauge in if you are really serious about it .. then you can go with different actions pump autoloader break open in single and double barrel with can be side by side or over under ,then there bolt action . So do the math ..but I only have 8

    I had a similar path to yours, George. Started with a family mossberg 500, and used that all the way until I bought myself my “forever shotgun” which was a synthetic browning maxus. It fit me well and I used that for a couple years on doves, ducks, turkey, coyotes, until the 16ga bug bit me by way of my uncle, and when I held my first A5 sweet 16 it was magic. It was light, I could look at something, close my eyes, shoulder it, and when I opened my eyes the bead would be right there. In use, I point it and birds fall. So my maxus is now my waterfowl gun as I dont have to worry about moisture affecting it too much, and my A5 is my upland gun. And now just a week ago, perusing my local gun shop, I found the exact model of 16ga that gave me the bug-and now this 16ga stevens/savage 5100 side by side is now my dedicated turkey gun 😂

    Nice to see that you have still got 'THE' shotgun. I had a Browning for about 40 years and it took a lot of shots on ducks,geese, pigeons and crows, to wear it out. Like yours I had to replace springs and spot weld various points that had worn with mud and sand. Eventualy I gave up and bought a new A5, which again I had problems with the feeding, after 5 years!. A new magazine and stock spring fixed that (the originals were poor quality) This again has accounted for every thing that is legal: that flies or runs. But to save me wearing it out; and not needing a 3-1/2" gun. I bought a Beretta 3" for pigeons, crows and squirrels. My other shotguns are a cheap Russian single .410 for autumn squirrels in the oak trees. A beautiful side plated 12 bore OU for pheasant shooting (as autos on a shoot are frowned upon) Finally my 8 bore which I love as it has accounted for uncountable ducks and geese on the marsh. Do I need any more? As I am now retired and can afford anything_ NO! Am I happy. POSSIBLY?

    George, great video. 👍🏼
    Being that you have an Auto-5 (one of my favorites) and I am the type who see’s a “broken” shotgun and thinks “I can fix that…”, makes me question what your troubles with that sweet 16 are?
    What kind malfunctions are you experiencing? Sometimes the chambers of a shotgun are forgotten and many issues can be resolved with a clean, hone, and polishing.
    Also of note with 16ga repeaters in general is observing what chamber length they have and the actual length of a fired hull. I have seen and experienced all sorts of issues from hulls that are a bit long, even though they are packaged as 2-3/4”. Primarily I have experienced issues with Federal and Rio brands while 16ga winchesters and Remingtons worked great and were a shorter over-all length hull (this being in a 2-3/4” chambered Model 12 in 16ga.
    Just food for thought… might not be a problem with the mechanics, but ammunition and chamber.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could be on to something. I've tried to address those items, but I'm not an expert. I've also used maybe half a dozen brands of ammo from target, to game, to magnum shells. The gun either stove pipes the shell or just closes again with the spent shell still in the chamber. About half the time.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheNewHuntersGuide to me, the combination of those two malfunctions across loadings and power levels would indicate that the shotgun either has a rough chamber, not enough oil/grease on the magazine tube, and or the orientation of the compression rings is not correct for the loads being used.
      Long recoil actions can be very finicky sometimes, and a couple of small issues can stack to cause a big headache.
      I would play with polishing up the chamber and the orientation of the friction and compression rings. For example, I have had many troubles with the Auto-5 Magnum Twelve in getting light and moderate loads cycling, even when following the exact instructions provided by Browning. The proper lubrication of the magazine tube and orientation of the recoil assembly is critical to reliable function, even if sometimes it is not the exact recommended method by the original manuals. Recoil assemblies also changed over time, and this can also impact function. While many Auto-5’s were assembled with a flat wire barrel spring, some had round wire. Likewise, some friction pieces and rings differ in geometry from different time periods and production runs. Over the course of nearly 90+ years of production, the Auto-5 shotgun underwent many iterative changes, so swapping out to replacement parts is not always a 1-to-1 operation.
      Art’s Gunshop has a number of great videos covering the topic, and Mark Novak just released a great video going over an early Auto-5 fix/troubleshoot that covers some of these items. Those references may be a good place to start in resolving your examples issues. If you were to ultimately need to send the shotgun into a gun-smith for servicing, Art’s and Midwest Gun-works would be your first stop as they specialize in or commonly service the A5; Browning USA proper does not, to the best of my knowledge, still provide servicing of the Auto-5 (and I honestly would not trust them to do so).
      I hope some of this information helps.

Wouldn't having a rectangle of the same area as a 30" circle be more applicable to duck hunting? My thoughts are, on average, most of our misses are due to being off horizontally vs vertically. Does that make sense?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why is it 30"? Oh that dates back before my time to how choke constriction is measured at distance. I just don't have a great reason to change it. For a circle vs a square, pattern dispersal is generally circular and shots and angles come in all shapes and sizes from left to right to diagonal to over head. A square doesn't lend itself to being as versatile.

    I have had/seen a couple semi autos that would develop a “lip” on the inside of the chamber face from the bolt closing home during cycling, which would snag the shell as the extractor tried to pull it out. The most common two issues I see on gas operated shotguns is; 1) guys don’t think to take the butt stock off and clean the recoil spring and it’s housing and it rusts or gums up causing drag. 2) the shell release latch for the magazine tube gets marred up where it rides on the action bar.
    I haven’t had too many issues with my recoil operated guns, but I hope you get that 16 ga figured out! I believe the answer is that every hunter needs 2 shotguns.. one for yourself and one so you can take a youth!

    I think a turkey shotgun with a pistol grip is more comfortable to hold (because my hand is in a more vertical position) for the long periods of time I sometimes have to wait for reluctant turkey to come into range. But I don't think that setup is good for fast moving targets because it is harder to swing in a straight line.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, I don't doubt it. I would have gone that route but I liked the multipurpose ability of the traditional grip.

    How did you decide on a 12 rather than a 20 for a dedicated turkey gun?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because I already had 2 12 gauges with interchangeable chokes and parts, its sheer utility. I am looking at adding a 20 to the line up this year, but mostly because people keep asking for test videos with one lol.

    • @craiges85
      @craiges85 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheNewHuntersGuide I was raised on a 12 gauge turkey hunting, but the advantages of a 20 were more than I realized until I started using one. Lightweight, smaller dimensions, lower recoil, and more maneuverable for example. I now own three 20s that will occasionally make their way into the field with me. TSS is cheaper in a 20 as well, and quite honestly a 12 gauge with TSS is a bit of an overkill if you look at the patterns they produce. I would highly recommend putting one in your arsenal for more than testing purposes. I’d be more than happy to offer mine up for testing as well.

    Would one gun with several barrels be something worth investing in?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It very well could be. Provided the extra barrels didn't rival the cost of more guns. I was looking for a multi barreled 20 gauge, so I could have a 26" for duck hunting and an 18" for turkey's, but the gun I want has no such options. But some do.

    Regarding shotgun brands, in my opinion Mossburg shotguns are underrated, and Benelli shotguns are overrated. Browning makes sturdy shotguns, but they are complex, which can create problems. As far as reliability goes, my Charles Daly triple magnum is the most reliable gun I have ever owned. It never malfunctions even when dirty.

      I’ve had it since they came out. It’s my beater even though it’s the most expensive semi I own. It’s been in the dirt the mud the rocks. It balances nice as an upland gun. Carry’s nice right at seven pounds. Gets put up dirty and only gets cleaned once a year in December when the weather changes.if I had to sell all my guns but got to keep one that’s the one I’d keep.
