Kent Fasteel+ vs. BOSS Warchief | TESTED
This is a test of the Kent Fasteel+ stacked load of #2/4 steel against the BOSS Warchief stacked load of #3/5 bismuth. I pattern test and ballistics gel test both duck hunting ammos to see which is the most effective. Both of these waterfowl hunting loads are more than capable for ducks at 40 yards and are viable for geese also. The bismuth ammunition is the better long range duck hunting load.

Do Tighter Choke Tubes Increase Recoil? TESTED
I'm used to the traditional M/F chokes in a side by side; however, I'm flirting with IC/M after seeing this video and considering my flushes of pheasants are well within 20 yards, mostly.
Ported chokes are designed to stabilize the barrel only to get you back on target quicker.
Thankyou George. I always pattern test what choke/load combo i use. Its good to get a visual, ots also great fun and it akways surprises me just how much time it takes up when testing.
Question I haven’t had luck with #2 for big ducks but I’m very consistent with #5 could it be that I’m not leading and the smaller shot is making up for error?
That certainly could be happening. But 2 shot is really big for ducks. The pattern density is going to be sparse. That's a goose load in my book.
@ thank you for the quick reply I also forgot to mention I’m shooting an A300 with a muller passing choke. Trying to get my hands on a decoy choke
Test them at in the cold got 3 that dont work below 30
They are lithium batteries, they pretty work as cold as you can.
So much more scientific than just wearing the sock and saying, "i like this one the most" lol
Haha
I'm ready for some #6/9 TSS.
#6 tss? For coyotes lol
Great test besides not using the muller UFO choke for both loads. This isn’t the first time you’ve given boss a leg up. Either way boss is 10 to 15 dollars more per box with 5 less shells per box. The war-chief load is probably a bit more deadly due to bismuth being 1/8 heavier. Steel grain per cc 7.85 Bismuth per cc 9.75 Then the 1.5oz load boss is pushing is always going to have more kinetic energy behind 1.25oz load of steel. The margin is gonna be slight not 30%…….
That's not true, I used different chokes so I wouldn't give Boss a leg up. I tested both ammos through about 10 chokes and used the best choke for each ammo. It's the best each load could do. It's the fairest you can get.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide Not true, BULL, how do you figure muller UFO is one of the best chokes money can buy versus a full choke. It’s not even close you know more about chokes and that not true if you were ignorant of the subject chokes maybe! Anyways, every time I turn around, you’re doing a review on boss loads… either way if you tested them throw all these different chokes then post the review of these chokes. Either way the War chief should be a monster at 1.5oz against a 1.25oz. Happy thanksgiving 🦃I do enjoy your reviews keep rocking!
@@BrockLowell Watch the videos. I shot 10 chokes with this exact steel load, including the UFO and the UFO was not the tightest pattern. This isn't subjective. The UFO isn't magic. With some loads its the tightest pattern, with others it's not. Look at the BOSS Steel Reserve test, that load doesn't like any choke tighter than modified. The UFO actually did worse than the passing.
@@TheNewHuntersGuide UFC should be amazing with softer metals like bismuth not Steel, TSS18, Hevi shot, and TSS15. I’ve founds from my own loading of TSS18 the UFO blows the pattern out! Great choke for bismuth or lead….
I only watch your show to see if you are consistently pushing boss shotgun shells. Why would you compare those different loads against each other? That's like, yeah, putting a racehorse against a farm horse. You wanna make it equal before you compare things, wouldn't you? Keep doing a great job, buddy. Have a merry merry christmas
Why compare these loads? Because these are things people are buying and wondering how they compare lol
I bought the kiln 3/4 zip and the furnace bottoms last spring when they were on sale. I have used them this hunting season and I am very pleased with them. Much colder weather on the way so they will get a real workout in the coming month. If you pick First Lite as your base layers George, I’m confident that I have made the right choice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Do you never shoot ducks any closer than 40 yards with these super tight chokes? A choke is supposed to give you the widest EFFECTIVE pattern at a given distance. Unless you are always shooting ducks at 40 yards, why do you want to shoot a baseball size pattern at 15-25 yards with your super extra full UFO chokes?
I've addressed this at length in other videos. In short, we are establishing maximum pattern potential. Once you find the tightest pattern a load can produce, you can back it down to fit whatever your needs are.
@ Mmm. I’ll take your word for it
Remington started the duplex load back in the late 80's.
@@russellparker3298 Still have some.
@virginiaswampboys199 I have one box with 9 shells in it left.
@@russellparker3298 You have about 6 shells more than me. I keep them displayed so people say “What the heck are those?”
@virginiaswampboys199 I do the same thing, love vintage shot shells.
I wonder how pheasant loads compare?
Lead ones you mean?
Such a great channel, I think you found your niche here on TH-cam. Do you count all of those holes on paper? Or do you use that the app that counts them?
Thanks! I count them all manually. I am aware of some apps but the cost of the paper is prohibitive. And the paper isn't large enough to confidently capture the whole pattern.
OK OK , You Caught Me 😛 I Was Not Subscribed, but now I Am 😋 I Have a 30 30 Winchester model 94 That I bought about 50 years ago from a Friend, and like You, with the stock sights I can not hit the broad side of a barn with it 😞 I Dont shoot it much because its not very accurate, I like your set up, and hitting clay targets and good groups on paper, forces me to do the same on my 30 30, I dont do much hunting now days, but I want to be able to hit what I am Aiming at 🤣 Great Video, Take care, Chellie
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
How can one compare pattern density when using chokes with different constrictions and internal geometries? Müller UFO has same constriction as their U4 which is equivalent to an extra full/turkey choke. I understand the Carlson’s Sporting Clays Full has longer parallel section further restricting the shot column, just wondering why not use the same choke for both loads?
Per the video, I tested both loads through about 10 chokes each to see which perduced the tightest patterns. The goal of this video is to test the best possible pattern if each load against each other. It's the fairest approach I could come up with because different sizes of different stacked metals are not going to perform the same out of any one choke. Using one choke would have skewed the results in favore of one load or another.
you are doing a outstanding job! thank you for your hard work and dedication
Thank you so much!
George, we need to see you test shotz ammo pulverizer steel 8 loads. Cole Townsend has been crushing ducks and geese with them and I need to see how that’s even possible lol
It's on my list, just a matter of budget and time. Probably won't be till next season.
Could you test out the Migra double stack BB/2?
Not planning to in the near future, but I will be testing migra 2/4 soon.
I'm gonna vote again for a bit slower camera work on the pattern and gel. That's the money shot. Also would like to see the data between the small pellets and big pellets separated. Averaging them seems irrelevant. It's been awhile since I've played with shells...~2015...Shot fasteel for awhile and it was my standard for a bit. But when I switched to rem nitro steel 1-1/8 oz I really started crushing birds. 1 #1s, 2s, and 3s. (I burgered several mallards and small geese all the way out to 50 yards with the 1s) I stopped shooting 4s because I don't like chewing on pellets. Kept the 3s for close in small ducks. The 2s were great if it was only ducks. But I really loved those 1s. Even honkers at 55 yards were toast. Probably killed 50+ birds with 1s in 2015. Especially when I was shooting well and used my IM choke. I used my LM when I was shooting poorly and my IM when I was dialed 😂
Honestly you can't really tell the different pellet sizes in the paper well, or in the gel, or even in your hand. It sounds like it would be obvious but 2 sizes difference is not that much. It takes meticulous counting and recounting when you are holding the pellets. On paper, it's almost impossible to get an accurate count.
another great show! Thanks
ThNks so much!
Be interested to see the new nitro duplex loads against other stacked steel. I ordered a case of 2x6 so tbd on the personal results.
would have liked to see a kicks highflyer xfull in the mix
I wouldn't mind testing them, or lots of others, but it all has a cost.
The still target does not tell the whole story, on a duplex the bigger shot has more energy and goes ahead of the smaller shot. To be effective the pattern needs to arive at the same time
After 30 yards the #2 shot will go way ahead of the # 4 shot. Pointless.
Unlikely, velocity drop between pellet sizes is negligible in terms of arrival time. Shot string theory was finally put to rest awhile back. It's a non-factor for hunting conditions.
Remington duplex was one of the first mix shot
Thanks!
Good Test George, Happy Thanksgiving 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦃🦃🦃🦃
Thank you so much! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for the video. Hope you had a good hunting season and Thanksgiving!
Thanks Ben! Happy Thanksgiving!
Bismuth is great, but this test proves steel is still pretty darn good if you choose the right load. Hard to justify the additional cost in bismuth with such similar performance.
It's certainly effective stuff
Tell you what man , I used the Kent fasteel+ for the first half of this season and was not impressed. Got a lot of crippled birds always had to finish with a water swat or two. I hunt in northwest coastal Oregon so more often than not I am hunting in the rain. One day my shells got a bit wet but not like they where swimming in water, the next shot I took hissed and popped but cycled the action I I took my second shot at the duck and the wad from the first shot had stayed in the barrel so it over pressured and caused the barrel to get a bubble. I then looked into shells that handle moisture better and found a guy who had the exact same issue with Kent. In my opinion they are dangerous in wet weather hunting and will never buy them again.
That doesn't sound good at all
What are you using now? No issues with boss this yeat
@@devinlindberg253Winchester x pert number 2 . Really like them so far.
I’m not a fan of the stacked shot. Did you get the average penetration of each size shot? The smaller shot doesn’t have adequate penetration at longer ranges where the bigger shot still kills. You could break a wing or get a head or neck kill but body hits will probably cripple. I believe that a single shot size that all the pellets will kill with a body hit is more effective. 4 bismuth body hits with 4 shot at its max range for that bird will have 4 hits that reach deep enough to kill. Where only 2 3shot will kill the bird and 2 5s will pull feathers. Both of these loads would probably kill a big Canada at 40 yrds if it centered in the pattern. With that tight of pattern there wouldn’t be a straight bone left. But if a bird is on the edge would the smaller pellets get it done?( I feel I fringe as many as I center. )Clean edges are the most important so birds are killed or missed when judging a shotgun shell/choke. I would like to hear your thoughts or others about this. Happy Thanksgiving
You really can't tell the difference between the pellet sizes in the gel very easily. It's even hard to tell when they are in your hand.
Doesn’t the smaller shot noticeably penetrate less? Is penetration the same if it’s all 5s or all 3s ? Should be if same muzzle velocity. Have you crunched the numbers for say all #4 Boss you ever shot into gel and averaged it? Legacy and Warchief might be a little different. When you compare 2 shells I really appreciate you shooting a shell you’ve patterned before and not just using the previous data for comparison. Do you ever do necropsies on ducks you’ve shot? I reloaded decades ago and paced off pheasant long shots to check penetration when I started using copper plated shot. Got though and throughs with #6 copper at 50 yrds on crossing shots. ( 1250 fps). Liked the Stinger video too. Was going to try it on cornfield decoying mallards this year but missed the migration because of crazy warm weather. Worked great on early season teal. Felt like five loads. Thanks again for all the counting
Dove loads
@@scottsantrizos6849 The shot does not perfectly stratify in the gel. Some 5s go further than others and some 3s go shorter than others. There are not clean layers. Sometimes it's obvious, often its muddy.
HALLOW is the best Alpac wool socks ever ever worn.
Why?
Have you patterned the Muller UFO choke with large steel shot like Kent Fast steel 3 inch BBs out to say 50 to 60 yards ? That seems to be the common load up here in Canada for Canada geese. Also up here most of us shoot steel 3s at ducks. We find for some reason 3s pattern and kill better than 2s or 4s. Thanks for all your hard work buddy your channel is great.
I shoot steel 3s at ducks. I think steel 4s lack killing power and steel 2s lack pattern density. I love bismuth 4s if I’m gonna be shooting bismuth but I just seem to find myself going back to steel 3s for most of my duck hunting. Had an awesome double on mallards the other day with the 20 gauge shooting 7/8th oz Kent’s. Both hit the water dead.
Yea, did both a multi choke video and a long range video
Should take a look at the Wicked Blend 2/4 I am loving this load for big ducks in 20G
What makes that one different from this one?
@@TheNewHuntersGuide They are a stacked load of 2 steel and 4 bismuth. 70%/30% if I recall. I would certainly say the Boss 3/5 may be better.. BUT NOT IF YOU LIVE IN CANADA because Boss won't ship here! haha Anyhow, I have had fantastic success with both the BB/1 and 2/4 from Browning
I would like to see this tested with the proper choke for the load, such as a muller decoy choke. Constricting too tight could possibly negatively affect the pattern. It would also be great to see the visual of them being shot on water as Jimmy Muller has described, again, with the proper choke.
I've tested the load across a spectrum of chokes. This one consistently performed best.
That’s interesting. I was convinced to try slower loads but now I’m not so sure! Thanks for all that you do. Your content is great!

I care less about .22LR expansion, precision and accuracy is the thing I want. Many people complain about the CCI Quit precision, the say it is not good. I think they rather have a problem with follow through or their rifles just don't shoot it good, like it is with many rifle ammo combinations.
