- The Canon EOS R came out 5 years ago back in 2018 and it was a big deal but since then we've seen a lot of new cameras and technology so, how does the Canon EOS R hold up in 2023? Is it still a good option as a camera? How does it handle photography and video? Let's talk about it.

I have one, it’s been a great photo specific camera. Never video so why pay for things you don’t need. Too many hybrid cameras on the market.
This was my first camera upgrade I made and I’m still using it today. Honestly a great camera. I don’t do video so the R has been more than adequate for stills and low light photography for me!
My preference is studio portraiture. I wanted the R specifically for eye focus, to enable me to tripod mount and shoot by remote to enable me to engage with my models. The R works perfectly for this, I am very satisfied, the files are superb.
Excellent review. As a hobbyist, I still use my EOS R as my main camera and I simply don't feel the need to look for a newer model yet. Also, I use it with a bunch of EF, RF and vintage glass. It is a versatile body which, as you said, makes beautiful images.
It’s still a wonderful camera! I replaced my a6500 with it and haven’t looked back since.
It's an amazing camera, one of a kind, really. The awesome sensor of the 5D IV on a new package with amazing AF (that still holds up), with a solid, robust body.
You forgot to mention that it shoots 10-bit 4:2:2 to an NinjaV. :)
Fun Fact a lot of my friends have two-card slot cameras and still use just 1 card ... is rare for photographers in my country that use the second card for backup, is more intentional just for extend the storage.
The second slot is overrated for backup. What if you get two bad cards? I’ve had two cards go bad at the same time.
informative video thanks Park Cameras
thanks for the effort and sharing. i use my EOS R for client work relying on a mix of RF and EF lenses. i am very satisfied with the stills. thumbs up.
Adding IBIS, a joystick, eye AF, and two card slots would make this a perfect camera.
That's the R5 for you
It does have eye AF. Honestly the only thing this needed to be perfect for me was dual card slots. I would’ve kept it as my main camera if it had 2 slots.
That’s R6 mk2
I got mine in December, 2019 after the price dropped for Christmas. Very happy with it, I love the quality of the images and the larger sensor gives great resolution. I also own an R7 which I got more for wildlife and grandkids playing sports. The R is my go to camera for portraits and landscape and even astrophotography. I also on 2 Canon M5 cameras which I use mostly when traveling.
I bought one earlier this year for RE and architectural photography. For the price I couldn’t beat it. It was a compromise between resolution and price. I use it for sports as well and it does a pretty good job. Even with 12 fps you still may not get to perfect shot. It’s all about timing. I still get plenty of great action shots. The AF works quite well for sports. The focus assist works awesome and fast with my 17mm TS lens.
Really Nice review!
I loved my Eos E + canon 35mm f1.4 II L USM , Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art HSM , Canon 135mm f2 L usm. Great work horse.. For product photography, portrait, landscape, all the Creative shots, I nail it all the time. using off camera flash Godox Ad400pro. It is very hard to shoot above ISO6400, because this combo does not need to go to that high ISO.. 70% i will hit ISO 1600 f4 ss 1/30.. and my photos come out very good.
What are better alternatives in that price range for video?
I may stand corrected but the 30.3 megapixel is said to be the same sensor as the 5D Mark IV. I've disabled the touchbar as I've found it to be very finicky.
I have R6MKII as my main camera for shooting pretty much anything else but the EOS R is specifically for protaits. It has 33 MP on a full-frame camera. That is incredible amount of detail.
Being an owner of both a 5D4, and an EOS ‘R,’ I can say unequivocally, the ‘R’ does not hold up quite as well as the 5D4, @ higher ISO’s. I had to shoot at 12800 on some shots, at my Son’s wedding, as I didn't want to use flash and disrupt the Pros that were shooting. 😊 They turned out very well. I will not push the ‘R’ much past 3200/ 6400. I think the sensor is not quite as sharp? Others have commented about this. Am I knocking the R, well NO. I like it. Oh, and it is 30.2 effective Megapixels Sir.
There are some brilliant aspects of the EOS R, and at same time, some annoying Ergonomic quirks. If Canon had just spent a little extra time with it, who knows just how good it could have been? EVF is very good, and the rear LCD is the same as the 5D4, and is excellent.
You summed up my feelings, very well, @04:58 with regards to the whole camera. It does do Video very well, with exception of the ridiculous crop in 4K. Good video.
I've been using the EOS R since launch and only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a joystick.
This R is a good camera. The build quality is better than the RP, R8.
Thank you
Is awesome! I use a 24mm ef and a 17mm when recording 4k. Wedding videos
I love my ‘R’ like others my almost 100% usage is stills and satisfies most of what I want/need. Doesn’t have 2 card slots, I like shooting Raw to one and jpegs to the other and a joystick but work around. I’ve never felt 30Mp is ever inadequate!
Thanks for the video. I guess one has to try it to see whether the autofocus is good enough for what one wants to photograph. I believe the 4K crop is 1.78, not 1.5. And it’s 30.3 megapixel, isn’t it? Anyway, love your channel, thank you!
You are correct. The camera is 30mp FF and has surprisingly good 1080p, even in low light at high ISO. It's crippled with a 1.76x crop that uses exactly 8mp for 4k video. However, in 10bit mode with Clog external to a Atomos, the quality is very high (480 mbits per second). BTW... unlike the R3 and R5, this is one of the few sensors on the market with good AF that doesn't use a bunch of "noise shaping" to produce excellent photos.
Crop is 1.74...really...sorry
1.78, 1.76, 1.74 crop lol
Since I only take photos and don't make videos, I still use my EOS R as my main camera and my EOS RP as my second camera. It doesn't always have to be the latest, right?!
pretty much in the areas it excels at its still holds up well but the aspects of it that were lacking on launch are staring to show its age
would you recommend R over R8??
Maybe someone knows how to remove the triple shutter trigger? in this case, there is only one photograph. The mode is set to One shot.
Personally, I would never use the video function. I have a bunch of EF lenses which took me a few years to get and I'm not ready to completely change format - but I really would like to go full frame mirrorless now.
Not trying to be pedantic, but I think it was 30 MP, not 33 :) Great video though! I used to own one of those, now moved to Sony...
What about the RP?
not 33mp its 30mp :D :D
The touch bar doesn't work with user wearing gloves.
30mp not 33
tony northup that always bragging about two card slots... in the end he used 1 card, and finally he experienced the card failure... just ironic actually.
I’ve had two cards fail at near the same time.
You need to get some sleep men you look tired
An R8 sells for $1200 and you are much better off with the R8
So, no. The R doesn't hold up...
It was behind the times when it launched, let alone now.
