Takes me back to 1972. I bought my first car, a 1970 Dodge Charger 440 six pack. When I raised the hood and saw that beautiful six pack, I was sold. The sound of those three 2 barrels coming in was heaven. Thanks for the memory! I still dream about that car.
Truth is when you get up to 425 horsepower 500 foot pounds of torque in any of those big block engines that's as much power as your normal tires and drive train can ever use anyhow.
I have that same setup in a boat. I used to run air filter box on my carbaiters but I found some nice velocity stack spark arrestors at Alberts performance in California that eliminates all coughing back through the carbaitors. Those would look sick in a car too. They are very low profile and would fit under the hood.
That stumble reminds me of my first car. It had the 352 T-bird engine and a model 4100 Autolite 4 bbl carb. The secondaries were vacuum operated using venturi vacuum off one of the primary venturis. It would stumble when you stomped the accelerator. I noticed that the vacuum actuator lever had 2 holes for the linkage and it was in the inner hole. I moved it to the other hole and it solved the problem. The first time I stomped it after the car nearly went sideways into a power pole. If you stepped into to get a full power, no spin takeoff she would get to about 30 mph and then you could hear the secondaries kick in. With that car that was your best takeoff. If you did a tire burning takeoff it would actually take longer to get up to speed. I had a limited slip rear end and it would spin both tires every time. It would pass almost anything but a gas station ⛽

Hey Nick, I was 18 years old and I had a 1970 Plymouth sport fury with a 383 with a holly 4barrel and I had it in my dads shop to change the oil and filters and tune it a little and I drained the oil and changed the oil filter but I used some Varosol cleaner to wash out the pan of any grit etc. This 383 had a dual point distributor and I was going to set the new points I got for the tune up and I changed the plugs as well. I left the oil fill cap off the valve cover and I had my girlfriend engage the engine to turn the distributor to the top of the cam to set one set of the points. Well the varosol mixed with the old oil creating fumes that ignited and of course I was leaning over the oil filler and the flames briefly blinded me and toasted the hair on my arms and head. The lesson I learned was to never ever wash out an engine with Varosol. It scared the crap out of my girlfriend and me but we laughed about it when I could see again. I thought you may enjoy a laugh. Don’t work to hard.
I watched another mopar enthusiast called Simpson speed on you tube and they built a 440 stroked to 505 with trick flow 240 heads a solid .562 flat tappet cam and it made 668 h.p. with only 33 degrees timing. And now I watch you with a .030 over 440 and it makes 425 h.p. with the factory manifolds 😮. Both engines are pretty stout.
We had both, a 70 Challenger R/T 440 4V and a 70 Hemi Cuda both 4-speeds and both had super track packs with Dana's and 4:10 gears. The Hemi was a fully built street motor and the 440 was almost stock. Every time I drove the Challenger, I would over rev it trying to get it to pull but it hated any sort of higher RPM and felt like it had a governor, just way under carbureted with the AVS. Nice seeing Steve in the dyno room and keep pumping out the videos I love them.
The 440 is one of Mopar's best engines. Back then too, you could get them any way you wanted the fuel system ( 1x4, 2x4, and 3x2 ). Thanks for the test. It was interesting to see the difference in power. Ronnie.
I just love the proof that air cleaner does not rob HP and torque even got slightly better. Equalling the factory HP of the venerable 426 Hemi is just amazing with a slightly better than stock cam. I know what it feels like to have that immediate rush when you hammer a 440 6 pak properly tuned! Thank you for making my day guys!

When i was a young man I had the opportunity of ordering a 440 6 pack new. The biggest questions came over how able I was to properly adjust the carbs. I ended up ordering a new 351-C mustang cobra with the 4 bolt mains
My cousin married a guy with a 70' cuda' with hockey stick decal banana 🍌 yellow 440 SIX PACK with Shaker hood! He kept edging my dad to race, but it was always out of tune & the carbs needed tuned it barely could run! My dad had the 69' 440 single carb in his A body cuda' one of 500 they told my dad. Dad had to take the 440 cuda' fender emblem because everybody wanted to race. I remember us in Washington a guy in a old grey Mustang 289 or 6 cylinder with loud muffler took off at the light. I also recall the Cherry 🍒 🌸 blossom blumming. I think dad took us up the Washington Monument & dad hit a German Shepherd by mistake driving there. Dad always used 8 mm camera to film places he took us like the S.D. monument. Old School is The Best School!!!! Nick your the Man! Keep being cool 😎 Old School is Cool!
So?..got to put 70 Cuda 6 pak back on road..43 yrs 20 plus yrs in the garage..just did not have a reason..Nick you just gave me the sign i needed..Jerry in Texas..peace!
Wishing I'd had you to tune my 70 RT back in the day Nick! It was modded a bit, Edelbrock intake, hooker headers, Holley 750, updated cam. don't recall model or spec now. After all that, never felt like the engine really reached its full potential. Keep up the good work Nick, learn a lot from every one of your videos!
I used to have a 1978 Chrysler Cordoba that was completely assembled at Windsor Assembly. Quite a decent car. Came with the 400 cu. in. 2 bbl and A727 Torqueflite transmission
@@gulfy09 If you truly bet you would be wrong. It was actually a great running car. I usually got about 20 mpg and the transmission had 2nd gear gone. That didn't bother the engine any.
I have the exact same setup with a custom six pack flat tappet hyd cam from Hensley Racing and and my center carb uses a billet metering block that accepts Holley jets. I also have TTI headers
You are awesome 🤩 Nick , my favorite 440 ! Have had several 69 Plymouth Roadrunners 2 door hard tops not the soft top ones, a couple with 383 Magnum, one with a 440 Wedge , a 392 Hemi , and a 440 with 6 pack , loved them all especially the ones with the Dana 60 rear with 354 lock possi gears
Strong motor, gotta love the overhead camera view when the extra 2 barrels kick in and you can see the fuel dump in!! 👍 Great videos Nick , I'm glad I found your channel...
this may sound odd. but back in 1977 when I had my 1973 Dodge Charger, I installed and tuned the engie and six pack. I found that by installing two different springs (from the Holley spring tuning kit for vacuum secondary's) in the vacuum diaphragms, I could tune the six pack so there was no stumble at all. since the 2 outboard carbs are linked together, it essentially acted like a dual rate spring. i found where it just started to stumble, then i went one spring firmer, and all of the stumble totally went away. just something to put in your bag of tuning tricks. by the way, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
Great job as usual Nick! Great seeing a healthy 440 Six Pack pull on your Dyno. Two of my best friends back in the early 70's drove Molar muscle. Joey had a 70 Four Barrel 426 Hemi Cuda, John had a 70 Six Pack 440 Challenger, both 4 speeds with Pistol Grip shifters. Of course they raced many times. Can't really say one was quicker than the other, whoever got the better launch off the line usually won, they were that close. I always leaned towards the 440...The Hemi back then was getting all the attention of a Beauty Queen with no mention of it's high maintenance costs!!!! Whereas the 440 was like the girl next door, always got the job done with no fuss and with legs just as pretty as a Beauty Queen!!!!!!
I had a 440 six pack in a 72 'Cuda back in the day. Replaced the stock 340. I wish I had Nick around to keep those carbs tuned correctly! It wasn't easy. it actually got better gas mileage, than the 4 barrel double pumper, until you get into the throttle. 😏😏 Had the 272 rear end. Allegedly, you could bury the needle on the 140mph speedometer. Allegedly.
Thanks for the 'Petrol' Gary. Hello Nick George & Steve, so once again Nick it makes little or no difference with or without, still a beaut engine just the same though. Steve's ride looks pretty neat in yellow sitting out front. The two new products for sale look way cool. Thanks for yet another beaut video, stay safe & well till next time.
Also the Badest one l build myself had the 440 Wedge , Super T-10 trans with 11” flywheel, Lakewood Scatter Shield, in line Mr Gasket vertical shifter with seperate reverse , the Dana 60 with 354 lock possi gears l got out of a totaled in the front Super Bee 🐝, l had Centerline Comps on the rear with Mickey Thompson N50’s on15” rims that’s over 12 1/2” inches of rubber on asfault 😎
Very nice numbers! It really surprised me how there was very little to no power loss with the air cleaner on, I’d have lost that bet. Keep those big block mopars coming bud 👍
Another great video post from Nick❤️👍🏼Thank you. We are indeed fortunate, to have you on TH-cam, dropping your knowledge about the fine tuning, unseen or unexpected ways of getting that extra power from engines, testing them out, getting the results you expect,or you dig harder. Youve got a work ethic so rare these days. Always putting in extra time for costumers You brighten my day when I watch your videos. Thanks again and God bless you Nick.❤️
I'm gonna have my spouse post my 71'383 cuda' from behind! When I sold it I almost got sick, my ex didn't like I had something Nice 👍 & She was a bummer! Toxic.i took tons of picks I liked taking my beauty rings off my slotted ralley rims because sometimes I use to go fast to fast. I had a billboard 383 emblems on my cuda' & the guy before bought it in Alice, Tx. It still had his plates in it but he signed the title for $3,000. What a deal. I loved it 1100+ was made that year only year with 4 headlights. He wore the clutch out & the front splash pan was all dented up going too fast on some bumpy roads. He added a cam, aluminum manifold & Holley 780 carb. Missing it still, her not at all.
Hello Nick, thank you for sharing the comp. Cam part # in this video. A lot of the mopar performance cams were racer Brown cams sold thru direct connection. Recently I had Jim at Racer Brown grind me a St - 14 cam. This cam is a solid lifter cam with 236 ° at .050 lift with .340 lobe lift. I am using 1.6 ratio rockers. A Preformer RPM manifold. 870 vaccum secondary. Hooker 1 7/8 headers. I just wish that I could afford some Trick flow 240 heads. This cam is susposed to work with 3.23 -3.91 gears and has a 2000 to 6000 rpm power band . It only has a 108° lobe speration angle.
You also increase cylinder pressure with each pull due to the rings seating in. I bet after 500 miles in the car you can get another 5-10hp out of it. And you will also be pulling in more fresh forced air from outside the engine bay with that air box.
This is why races between the 426 cars & the 440+6 cars were close. The 440+6 is an impressive engine for being a factory developed unit more than 50 yrs ago
this channel has made me want a classic. anything with a V8, manual transmission and from the 60s is what I'm looking for. I always ran turbo Supras but now I want a classic. I had my fun with tuners. time for something different

hi nick i reran the end twice and looked at your #'s sheet on the last run without air cleaner. i dont know if you noticed but the hp jumped at last minute at 5300 rpm to 427.3 indicating the engine may make more power at higher rpm. you have highlighted 426.5 at 4800 rpm

That is How a 440 six barrels should sound! My cousin yellow cuda' sounded like it had a Bad Case of Bronchitis! It wasn't breathing well at all. OLD SCHOOL IS THE BEST SCHOOL!
This is true, for the secondaries to work properly, air cleaner must be on these carbs, they are totally reliant on strong vacuum signal, which will increase with air cleaner in place, also you may have to change the springs in the diaphragms, increase the power valve size in center carb, and increase the size of metering plates in outboard carbs. these items all provide a smooth transition from low speed circuit to high speed circuit. You are very lean!!
Very impressive on the horsepower and torque on that 440 six pack!

We have one that runs in our garage that has less than 100,000 miles on it outta a1976 dodge 1 ton van. Were gonna build a back up motor for our 71 dodge demon bracket car. It has a 650 to the rear wheels 440 in it now. Very violent car when you release the trans brake for sure.
When i was a young man I had the opportunity of ordering a 440 6 pack new. The biggest questions came over how able I was to properly adjust the carbs. I ended up ordering a new 351-C mustang cobra with the 4 bolt mains
Thanks Nick and all @ NICK'S GARAGE for bringing us this video !!
Amazes me how many times the numbers start with XX9.9X and Nick hunts for the extra .XX and almost always finds it!
Let's take our places and see what Nick has prepared for us and what George has photographed. Cheers guys 👍
Welcome back, Sony.
Thank you guys 👍
Yes please. Love the stock exhaust manifolds. Chrysler Power! Amen.
Don’t let the man get cha. Thanks Nick
She sounds awesome Nick, and the power and torque is amazing from just a mild cam and .030" over bore. Really NICE WORK!
Thank You so much Nick for demonstrating the true power of the 440 6 bbl. What a powerful engine indeed!
I used to have a 1978 Chrysler Cordoba that was completely assembled at Windsor Assembly. Quite a decent car. Came with the 400 cu. in. 2 bbl and A727 Torqueflite transmission
No power bet it would backfire on a rainy day
@@gulfy09 If you truly bet you would be wrong. It was actually a great running car. I usually got about 20 mpg and the transmission had 2nd gear gone. That didn't bother the engine any.
I'll have to add the cup and beer glass to the Nick's Garage collection
We appreciate the support!
I have the exact same setup with a custom six pack flat tappet hyd cam from Hensley Racing and and my center carb uses a billet metering block that accepts Holley jets. I also have TTI headers
There are a lot of good Mill Builder's, but if had the money for a build it would go to this man 💯
You are awesome 🤩 Nick , my favorite 440 !
We are glad you’re here.
this may sound odd. but back in 1977 when I had my 1973 Dodge Charger, I installed and tuned the engie and six pack.
Nick I love that 440 6pack
That engine in the 69 1/2 Roadrunner with 4 speed was hard to beat on the street. Even caught a few HEMI cars by surprise.
Allegedly.
Back in the day I would use a vacuum gauge to adjust the 4 barrel carb on my 383. Worked well.
Good evening ladies and germs! That yellow Charger is just beautiful! That yellow just pops!
Nick I love the glass.
Another awesome Monday show. Nothing sounds as nice a a 440 6pk screaming away !!
At 23:35 the rear carb is dumping fuel at idle. I have heard this setup could be tricky. But that engine is indeed a beauty.
WK on top of Nicks miss!😁
Also the Badest one l build myself had the 440 Wedge , Super T-10 trans with 11” flywheel, Lakewood Scatter Shield, in line Mr Gasket vertical shifter with seperate reverse , the Dana 60 with 354 lock possi gears l got out of a totaled in the front Super Bee 🐝, l had Centerline Comps on the rear with Mickey Thompson N50’s on15” rims that’s over 12 1/2” inches of rubber on asfault 😎
I thought I saw fuel dripping in rear carb when you were in two barrels! I had needle & Seat failure last year! 😵💫
A silky smooth dyno session!
Thanks for joining us, Nabil.
Very nice numbers! It really surprised me how there was very little to no power loss with the air cleaner on, I’d have lost that bet. Keep those big block mopars coming bud 👍
Evenin Mr Nick!! Run 440!! Have a Great Week!!
Thanks! You too!
Always putting in extra time for costumers
You brighten my day when I watch your videos.
Thanks again and God bless you Nick.❤️
Thank you for your kind comment, Budd.
The engine sounds really healthy, great job as always.
Great patina on that filter cover!
Thanks Nick. I am not a mopar guy but that engine sounds very healthy...
This cam is susposed to work with 3.23 -3.91 gears
and has a 2000 to 6000 rpm power band . It only has a 108° lobe speration angle.
You also increase cylinder pressure with each pull due to the rings seating in. I bet after 500 miles in the car you can get another 5-10hp out of it. And you will also be pulling in more fresh forced air from outside the engine bay with that air box.
dripping carb after first pull gave the erratic idle.. typical holleys and after a couple revs back to normal. thanks good stuff.
This is why races between the 426 cars & the 440+6 cars were close. The 440+6 is an impressive engine for being a factory developed unit more than 50 yrs ago
That deep throaty roar of a big block just sounds so bad ass and ya know one if ya hear it down the road to haha awesome
Sounds good from all angles. Except under the hood of the cop chasing you.
@@NicksGarage lol right while they're getting left in the dust and exhaust lmao
We all need to crowd fund Nick a year's supply of timing lights, or Nick needs to switch to EFI and just plug a laptop in...
😉
It's hard to believe that 440 Six Pack was one of the best and most popular muscle car engine.
this channel has made me want a classic. anything with a V8, manual transmission and from the 60s is what I'm looking for. I always ran turbo Supras but now I want a classic. I had my fun with tuners. time for something different
Let us know what you find.
will so Nick. I want a mopar 440
I still like the ram pickups I'm on my 4th one 2019 Just added a tuner from Holly I love it. Thanks for your show.
That sound in the engine room is nice
Hay Nic who does the engine painting that's nice to.
Myself in the corner of the shop.
Wow, My best friend, Thank you for your hard work in making the video. I enjoyed the good video. Have a happy day.
Another fantastic show! I love the 6 pack/bbl vids. Always delivers never a let down
Thanks for posting yet another excellent video Nick! I really enjoy watching and learning from you on whatever you happen to be working on.
The thing about old American Muscle Cars is their is so much sexy, classy and straight up badassery all wrapped up in one.
Nick Is The Man. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇨🇦🇨🇦
And total impracticality. Daily driver with $6.00 gas?
Hey Nick you and George do such a good job on these videos man I'm telling you I don't know any other video that I would want to watch these are the best makes me happier than a pig in mud by golly thanks again
The straight 6 265 hemi with triple SU,s used to beat the XW 351 shacker here in Australia, on the quarter mile, if they outlawed gasoline I think we would go back to the moonshine days and produce our own fuel 🤣😂 all the best to yous and your loved ones
Alcohol. Nitro methane.
It would be nice to have a set up that you could see the timing in the control room.
hi nick i reran the end twice and looked at your #'s sheet on the last run without air cleaner. i dont know if you noticed but the hp jumped at last minute at 5300 rpm to 427.3 indicating the engine may make more power at higher rpm. you have highlighted 426.5 at 4800 rpm
My dream was to ship me over a muscle car built-in your garage, but gas prices are skyrocketing close to 3€( ~5$ Canadian/litre=20$/gallon). Pretty soon we are going to use our own six-packs!!Just love watching your videos!Expat Canadian living in Greece!
Nice build Nick. That motor would make my Leadfoot happy.
That is How a 440 six barrels should sound! My cousin yellow cuda' sounded like it had a Bad Case of Bronchitis! It wasn't breathing well at all. OLD SCHOOL IS THE BEST SCHOOL!
If I had to choose between a 426 hemi and a 440+6, 440 hands down. Awsome Monday!
Any motor with a 3 pack carb. 6 cycle or eight. Comes down to experience. You mick are one of many that can tune. Old school. Mick au
