Pink Floyd, reunited with former bassist/lyricist Roger Waters for the first time in over 24 years.The complete foursome had not performed together since a show at Earls Court in London on 17 June 1981.
Roger Waters' relationship with David Gilmour was so distant in the period before Pink Floyd's celebrated reunion at Live 8 that Waters had to ask organizer Bob Geldof for his former bandmate's phone number.
While Geldof had been persistent in trying to broker peace between the pair, he'd hit an initial roadblock with Gilmour - who once referred to a possible detente as something akin to "sleeping with your ex-wife." Waters then interceded. Ultimately, the event's mission - Live 8 was meant to raise awareness of poverty, debt and the AIDS crisis in developing nations - led to one of music's most improbable remarriages, though only for a single evening.
"The moment was bigger than those bad feelings," David Gilmour told the Associated Press in the days leading up to Pink Floyd's July 2, 2005, appearance. "Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention, then it's going to be worthwhile."
And so Pink Floyd's classic-era lineup - Gilmour, Nick Mason, Waters and Richard Wright - took the stage for the first time since a 1981 concert at Earl's Court in London and, alas, for the last time ever.
"It's great to be asked to help Bob raise public awareness on the issues of third-world debt and poverty," Waters enthused as the day drew near. "The cynics will scoff. Screw 'em! Also, to be given the opportunity to put the band back together, even if it's only for a few numbers, is a big bonus."
To no one's surprise, Pink Floyd's reunion eclipsed a star-packed lineup at the London Hyde Park show, which also included Paul McCartney, the Who, Elton John, Madonna, R.E.M., U2, Coldplay and Robbie Williams. Live 8, scheduled to sync up with the 20th anniversary of Live Aid, also featured six other events through July 6. Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, Jay-Z and others performed at Philadelphia. Brian Wilson, and Crosby Stills and Nash appeared in Berlin. Duran Duran and Tim McGraw were among the headliners in Rome. Annie Lennox performed at Edinburg as the G8 summit -- a gathering of international leaders where debt cancellation and aid would be discussed -- kicked off.
For Pink Floyd, however, the most immediate concern was far more small scale: getting the songs right. "It's sort of assumed that we'll all remember how they go," Mason impishly admitted.
By all accounts, everyone was on their best behavior as three days of pre-show rehearsals unfolded. "There were times when Roger was struggling to not get bossy, and I was struggling to keep being bossy," Gilmour said at the time. "I saw how arguments could have happened, but we aren't at each other's throats anymore. Getting rid of that acrimony has got to be a good thing. Who wants to have that fester in your mind the rest of your life
Still, there was the matter of a set list. And it was there where the former bandmates - two decades after an ugly legal battle over the rights to the Pink Floyd name -- once again clashed.
Gilmour steadfastly refused to play Pink Floyd's most recognizable radio hit, "Another Brick in the Wall," deeming its anti-education message inappropriate for the moment. "Anyway, I don't like it much. It's all right but not part of the great emotional oeuvre," Gilmour said, in a 2006 interview. "The songs that Roger wanted were not the ones I thought we should do. The arrangements of the songs were not the way Roger wanted to do them. But I kind of insisted."
In the end, Pink Floyd were restricted, like all of the other artists performing at Live 8, to a short, 20-minute set. Even a reunion 24 years in the making was only a mere portion of the larger production. So the band settled on four songs: "Breathe" and "Money" from 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon, "Wish You Were Here" from the 1975 album of the same name and "Comfortably Numb" from 1979's The Wall, Pink Floyd's penultimate recording with Waters. They left aside music from the two Gilmour-led Pink Floyd albums that followed the acrimonious split.
Waters made reference to the band's original leader, the late Syd Barrett, even as he framed the larger reasons Pink Floyd had decided to reunite. "It’s actually quite emotional to be standing up here with these three guys again, after all these years - standing to be counted with the rest of you," Waters said amid the opening strains of "Wish You Were Here." "Anyway, we're doing this for the people who're not here - and particularly, of course, for Syd."
They finished with a somewhat awkward bow, but only after reaffirming Pink Floyd's former power and grace

Floyd is one of my faves, but it's funny: when I'm in a bad spot in life, I put Black Sabbath on first, b/c their lyrics are even darker and more cynical than Floyd's!

Gilmour's voice has aged amazingly well, especially compared to others from the 70s.
Thats because his voice is so amazing because of its raspiness. And usually older voices are more raspy. So it was likely to age like fine wine. Similar to how a 50 year old acapella bass singer will probably sound better than when he was 20 years old simply because you go deeper and gain more volume (frankly not least because of increased body fat) as you age and thats exactly what a bass wants. Unlike a tenor for example.
I was incredibly surprised to hear him singing in his old age. Was not expecting it to sound as great as it was in the 70s. In fact the darker growls encompassed in his voice now fits the song greater, especially since the song's title "Wish You Were Here" would have more meaning the older you get

Someone says Nick is not a great drummer. I am no expert, so I won’t argue. The fact is that I can’t imagine anybody else giving that sound to the band. I think Nick is the best possible drummer of the greatest band in rock history.

Polly Ann read that book in one night. It gives you that unique Pink Floyd pace when you read it. I loved it.
Could feel the tension there, and Nick's frustration that his two mates just can't seem to get along but hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.

I'm so glad they did that concert, all 4 of them making music together as Pink Floyd for one last time. It gave closure to the band really, the fans got to see them and it was for a good cause.
And that group hug at the end! When people set aside differences for a good cause...and the fans.
Someone once said that Gilmour kept his voice and lost his hair, while Roger lost his voice and kept his hair...
...but Rick kept both his hair and voice.
I kinda like Roger's rough and husky voice instead of more polishing and sweet voice of David. And that's just my opinion, no need to bitch abt it again ppl.

I do not think Roger's voice changed much at all... he always had that husk and some whine in it. Is unique and rather good. As I recall on the Wish you were here lp ... Gilmour sang the lead vocal alone on this song.
I am 58 years old and I was in this concert at the Hyde park and the very strong emotional moment when Waters said ( I am glad to be with these three and of course we’re doing it for SYD ) 🥰🌹😢

It is amazing to me that everyone doesn't just enjoy the music for what it is. There are multitude reasons for why Pink Floyd split up. There is more than enough blame to go around. It is like pointing at Yoko Ono as the reason the Beatles broke up. For myself, I am just grateful for the wonderful things they created. This is my favorite band of all time. It is wonderful to listen to, and I never get tired of it. I wish the best for everyone that was ever in any way involved in the Pink Floyd. To every single human being that ever contributed a scintilla of effort to the monumental works of this band, a heartfelt thank you from me.

three was stronger than one and at the last gilmour voice and guitar has more magic than any another fact and element. nevertheless any one of them has his own style and characteristics as a artist and we love all of them dont forget syd.
J Smith ,well said! I've been a fan since I was 4 or 5 yrs old. They are the first band I got fanatic about,learning everything I could about a band that spoke to me. Amazing seeing them back together before Richard's passing,they made it complete. I love Pink Floyd.
I think what really resonates for me is that the band was still turning out quality material during each of the three major incarnations.
I can't imagine groups like this happening again. Absolute stellar musicians with buckets load of talent. Just can't see the current pop scene producing anything like this ever again.

The way David sings along with his guitar playing is just brilliant. I saw him perform this in 2006. My eyes and ears will never forget the bliss. What an amazing talent.

New music together? Implying they wrote much music together beforehand? They didn't. Roger wrote most of the music and lyrics. Count the credits and co-credits on the 5-album run at success (DSOTM-TFC). I have the numbers should you need them. Dave wrote LITTLE. Mason and Wright... even less.
There was never a dynamic duo in Pink Floyd. There was the genius - Waters, and the spoiled bastard stepchild - Gilmour.

Even though he was the main creative force, all the 4 were essencial to creating the sound we know Pink Floyd for... If he was that good, so tell me why Final Cut, which Gilmour asked to delay a bit so the rest of the band could make music for the album and Roger denied it, don't come even close to DSTOM, Wish you were Here or The Wall? What would be confortably Numb without Gilmour's solo? What would be DSTOM Without "The great Gig In The Sky", "Time", and "Us and Them" Wich are mainly Wright's compositions? So please, Roger is a great composer, one of the best, but Pink Floyd is a bit of everyone...

I've been following them since 1977 and know all about their years prior to *Dark Side*. *1969-71* is my favorite era because of the long instrumental jams they had within their songs.*+Lucas* says it all... yes, *Roger* wrote most of the ideas, but to imply that he constructed every single note is a slap in the face to *Gilmour* and *Wright*. The sum of *Pink Floyd* - during their most productive years - 1973-1979 - was the four of them working together and creating that sound that we all love so much.
*Roger* only came close to *Pink Floyd* once, with *Amused To Death* and he had to bring in *Jeff Beck* to help get him there. *Beck* created the perfect background for *Roger* to expand on. *Roger* has also had one amazing drummer in *Graham Broad* during his entire solo years. *Roger* is a genius, his writing proves that, but without some very key elements to help him along, his sound would not have been completed.
And yes, *Roger* and *David* were a dynamic duo... just listen to any of the *Floyd* albums that you love... the thing that makes it all work is the music being played behind the lyrics, and in most all of those cases, that music involves *David* creating magic on his Strat and *Rick* laying down some amazing piano/keyboard work.
So sad that you are so blinded and can't see that.
Festus Haggen It was the combination of all of them that made Pink Floyd what it is. The epitome of that I think is Shine On You Crazy Diamond. They were the dynamic trio during that period. Even Roger lately in interviews gives credit to David and Rick for what they did. Without their contributions Pink Floyd would never have made the albums that they did. Roger was/is a great writer, particularly with lyrics, themes and concepts. One of the best in rock music ever, but he has limitations that Dave and Rick often made up for. And likewise Dave and Rick had limitations that Roger made up for.
I had the very great honour of meeting Dave, Nick and Richard on a number of occasions during the Momentary lapse of reason tour in 1987, awesome musicians and very genuine down to earth people. Pink Floyd have left a remarkable legacy to the world of music.

I remember the sound of my Father's voice when he came home from work and found one of the walls in my bedroom had been painted black. He then turned to look at me and noticed the bottles of florescent poster paints and brushes at my feet. I answered his strained, questioning gaze by holding up my copy of Dark Side Of The Moon. He looked concerned again when I held up my Wall album and pointed at the adjacent wall. He didn't get it.... but he let me do it. Best Dad... just hearing Floyd in the distance... nearly every time... brings up memories of my parents (and others that I've lost over time). Thank you, Roger, David, Nick, Rick, Bob, and Syd!
Gilmour's playing is not one bit different, so is his voice. Didn't change. Now that's what I call dedication, and mastery of music!

I think time and perhaps they found out that Rick was terminally ill made them realise hey here is our chance to bury the hatchet. little did we realise just how much time Rick actually had and the lasting memory is the four guys leaving a stage smiling and happy after delivering 25 mins of impeccable, unsurpasable music. For me the perfect send off for Rick and the smile on Joe publics face of which 85 % had probably just had a musical education for the first time has shown what an impression it made. From me personally the best 25 mins I have ever witnessed.

Im so glad to see the Pink Floyd get together and smooth things over enough to make a graceful exit and a powerful finale to Live 8. Especially poignant is the sad facr Richard Wright passed on not too long after the show, in a positive offshoot of the moment both Dave and Roger played at each others solo fundraising charity events and gave fans what they were hoping for after a long time, accord amd harmony ; if only for a short time, but it is something that gives us all hope! Viva Pink Floyd!!!
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band for as long as I remember. In the past, when I was going thru trials and tribulations in my life, I would sit by myself and listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 1). That music just flowed thru my entire body, and put me at ease, and somehow, allowed me to think things thru more clearly. Such an amazing song!

It really sucks that a group like this ever broke up to begin with, and I’m so glad I got to see them reunite live onstage - albeit on tv - just once in my lifetime. They sounded like they had never stopped playing together.

To me, David is the absolute greatest, the singular most soulful, heartwarming guitarist to ever be. I'd trade my life away if that'd allow him to age backwards and be with us for a few more decades (although I myself wouldn't be around to enjoy his music). The day David passes, that day will decide my mood for the rest of my life. Long live..

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that. Rick Wright is such an under-appreciated member of Pink Floyd. He is the backbone of their sound.
Pink Floyd is one of those bands where every member is so unique, that it just doesn't work if anyone leaves the band...... but I still enjoy most of the stuff from post-roger era...... infact, my first encounter with this band's amazing music was "Division Bell" and I still love that album...... Floyd don't have a bad album..... every record is different and fresh with different approach..... that's what makes them the greatest band of all time

I have been in the middle of the pacific, Red Sea looking at a billion stars transfixed and soothed. Sometimes mesmerized listening to your music. I like everything you have put out.
I am sure the text are read by some of the band as they would like to read the feedbacks .
It’s like every great band, the competitive tension between them makes them really focus and perform to their absolute best. It’s like they want to impress each other or at least not let themselves down, I think it’s that added dynamic which just adds the edge when they, or any great band play together.
Wish we could have heard a little of "comfortably Numb" rehearsal. Would have been nice to hear Roger Waters vocals singing "Hello Is There Anyone In There"

Who knew Wish You Were Here would be autobiographical in describing the relationship between Dave and Roger. Honestly the most poetic thing I’ve ever seen
Me and my 14 year-old son were lucky enough to be at Live 8 - we went up to London the day before and wandered out to Hyde Park in the evening to quiz the security guys about the best time to start queuing and what time the gates would be opening the next day; their advice was queue from 5.00am and the gates were due to open at noon.... while we spoke to them, Pink Floyd's soundcheck drifted across the evening air. A magical moment. The next day we were at the gates at 4.30am......
Mr Nick Mason is a classic example of how you can breeze through life armed with that most precious of things - a sense of humour.

Nah, that's what youtube is for. David refuses to play certain songs without Rick, and I don't blame him. It's really over ... but never over.
I feel so bad for the younger generation of Floyd fans since they'll never have the chance to see the greatest band in history play. I was lucky enough to have won the age lottery and see them live. I still remember everything about that show and night vividly even though it was 24 years ago.

+fed goe All classics of their own flavor, but those early sound experiments were so unique & exciting ~ and it was just the four guys, no sax player, trio of backup singers, 2nd guitarist, etc. Rick was most crucial to that era, so I really can't see the rest performing that stuff without him.
Saw these guys back in 1973 , it was easily the best concert I have ever seen in my life ,,,,,,,,, even better than Yes !!

The fact that they, Roger & Dave, have played together since shows that when they split it was because of powerfully talented people falling out and Pink Floyd would not have existed as it is without their passion and sometimes that drive drives people apart. I am so glad Live 8 brought them back together and they have now a new strong relationship and they play together to this day.

I heard David say years later that it wasn't that great of an experience. That Roger came back in and was trying to call the shots like he was still head honcho. Tried to change the set list, arrangements, etc. They were like, dude, you quit this band, you're not in it, much less the boss. Said the experience convinced him to let go of any thought of a more involved reunion.

Roger was definitely the driving force of PF through the 70s, but I feel in his years as a solo musician he hasn't grown at all (Though he still puts on great shows, but I'm simply talking about the music). Rick and Dave continued to grow and evolve their music, even if it has gone outside the sphere of what I can appreciate personally.

I've always wished they'd repeated the chorus of this song. It's too beautiful to only sing once. I do have one live version where they repeat it, but it's not good quality. Not only do I like their music but they all seem like real likable people as well. The fact that they were able to put their differences aside for this show was awesome!
