Pink Floyd -"Echoes" Pompeii

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 พ.ย. 2024
- Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii , Italy
he main footage in and around the amphitheatre was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band's regular touring equipment, including studio-quality 24-track tape recorders. Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974
he film has subsequently been released on video numerous times, and in 2003 a "Director's Cut" DVD appeared which combines the original footage from 1971 with more contemporary shots of space and the area around Pompeii

@Caring Mouse Led Zeppelin fan here but this is an absolutely epic masterpiece in music 🎶 🎵
I disagree, pink Floyd plays for the universe
The first time I watched this video, my friends explained it to me while we were eating umm brownies. they are playing for the dead of the disaster at Pompeii (the ghosts obliterated in place without warning). Then my young self was like WHOA (didn't associate the volcano with playing to an empty ancient theater, and then it made amazing sense).
I went to Pompeii few days ago, I put my headphones on and played songs from this concert, TDSOTM and Meddle. Amazing experience, I just felt like I was in 1973, didn't even realize the walk lasted almost 4 hours.
I made the same. August of 2009.

The thing I find most amazing is that they have plaques on the wall commemorating the great event. The locals remember two times in history...Vesuvius and Pink Floyd.

I'm 26 years old, and I discovered Pink Floyd a decade ago. The only reason I'd want to go back in time is to experience a Pink Floyd concert, both during the Syd Barrett era and after. I'm not complaining about the era I was born in; I'm lamenting what I missed out on.

Went to Naples and Pompei with the wife. Visited the amphitheater. The wife said, "Wow, over thousand years ago Romans filled this place". I said, 'Ya, but Pink Floyd played here!"
The day I visited it was feckin closed :( For no other reason than bloody David Gilmour, who was performing there that night (See Live at Pompeii 2017). I don’t care what anyone says this was Pink Floyd’s best song. This is truly the only song in which all four members are completely in sync. It also blends their psychedelic side with their blusey side. And finally in the words of Rick on this song “We found our feet, we figured out we could do this without Syd.” We got Darkside two years later. To put it bluntly Echoes is Pink Floyd
Cheers Geoff
And it fits with 2001 A Space Odyssey too... Look it up!
And yes, it's a real powerhouse. Like Wish You Were Here or Comfortably Numb.
Exactly. Imagine being in the amphitheatre and hearing the reverb, it would be like ghosts of the past.
@@5Cats i agree! Watched it years ago with Echoes and it worked great! You cue the song right when the title comes up for Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite (the final sequence)
Remarkable words "we could do this without Syd". Syd Barrett was the "genius" of Pink Floyd. PF with Syd and PF without - two different bands. "Meddle" (Pompeii concert based mostly on this LP) perhaps was the border between "Syd" and "non Syd" Pink Floyd. It was both psychedelic (like Syd's music) and modern bluesy (like Waters-Gilmour).
Listening to Pink Floyd brings calm to our soul. In this chaotic world, it is at the end of the night that I have some peace. Thank you for existing and making my existence a little less painful.

The fact that this was filmed with nobody in the audience just makes me adore Pink Floyd even more, it gives it this feeling as if this concert withstands the test of time, creating the illusion that the concert is live to anyone who watches it at any time, as they are the only audience spectating.
It really creates a sense of isolation and creates a focus squarely on the band. Question for you. Have you seen Stop Making Sense, the live Talking Heads movie directed by Jonathan Demme? Though there was an audience in attendance, he made a point of never filming the audience. He wanted the focus to be squarely on the band, not unlike this film. I think stuff like this is fascinating.

This whole experience is a masterpiece. The music, musicianship, directing, camerawork. It’s a work of art. I’ve listened to it maybe 1000 times and still can listen to it again without wearing it out.
This world is billions of years old.
And we have the pleasure to be here together with Pink Floyd.
I've always loved the sequence that starts at around 6:25. The camera slowly rolling past the stacks of amps and cabinets marked with Pink Floyd London stencils. Such a statement.
same !
Hell yes just awesome 😊
I felt satisfied that I'm not the only one who felt it❤
They were playing for a few, for a short time.
Why arent they touring now? Blackmails fictional and theres so many lies about Syd.

When I was in high school around 1981 or so, 4 of us went to the local drive in theater (Hendersonville TN) to see this movie. We were the only ones there and so no one was working the ticket window. So we went and parked in the center of the parking lot and then took every speaker (100's of them) and set them on the ground pointing towards the car and sat out on the hood with our own surround sound. It was grand.

Ok 👍
Hahahaha. That's unbelievably awesome!!!
Where was there a drive-in in Hendersonville? I live there too! That’s such a cool story!!!!
You created your own little Pompei!
It was on the county line where 31E crosses into Davidson County on the banks of Mansker Creek. Looking at the intersection of the highway and the creek, it was on the SE corner.
Nick Mason, one of the most underrated drummers ever
Stewart Copland, a God in the Olympe of drummers
He's my favorite
Jon Hiseman is also an extremely underrated drummer

79ers stick together
every single member of this band is at the top of their game here. roger waters is just killing that bass line, the way gilmore just holds every note, shakes the life out of it , gives it a little wiggle and sets it free is just amazing... vicious, richard wright could have been a concert pianist. that organ breathes life into this piece, and nick mason on the drums is perhaps the most underrated drummer in the history of rock
and here's the most ironic part. floyd was as much a jazz band as anything. their less is more approach to music was stunning. nothing overblown, its like they stripped a song down to its very essence its skeleton. they left huge gaps in their music that always left the listener wanting more
in my opinion this was the best band that ever came out of england. a true powerhouse of creativity and craftsmanship
i am so grateful that i grew up poor. i somehow managed to frankenstein a radio when i was a kid. we didnt have cool channels where i was in S mississippi, but i ran a wire way up to the top of a sweetgum tree and could now and again pick up a station out of little rock ak, and another from out in Texas somewhere. from that little home made transistor radio i learned about the king biscuit flour hour and wolf man jack. that little radio was like a time machine, an escape pod. i would lay out in the yard at night and try to tune into the airwaves and thats how i first learned of this band. i wish i were there now laying under the stars ,,, just me and that little radio and my dreams of what could be. i am very grateful for those memories.
You should get your ham radio license. That way you can have better radios and antennas!😃
I concur.
However....
The Beatles are superior.
Tomorrow never knows...
that is one cool story man
Go back and do it....
I concur
The bass line is indescribable, phenomenal.
Roger rocks the hell out of this one. Funky and rock at the same time!
@@ElMariachi555 Unfortunately the speakers got more camera shots than he did.
It's a downright shame Roger didn't get more screen time. His baseline carries this track to such an extent, that it's a sacrilege that he is pretty much left out of this video. Still a sensational track, way ahead of its time, but if feel bad for Roger being left out.
@@jehaande I agree !!
But you described it; phenomenal
Questo filmato l'avrò visto 500 volte e non mi ha mai stancato.... ❤❤❤
This feels like that meme; You may be cool, but youll never be shirtless David Gilmour rocking an epic solo in a Roman amphitheater cool
Most people don't realize how incredibly handsome they all were.
Hahahahahahah, I'm stealing this. Brilliant!
Slash wishes he was Gilmour right there
@@andijw79 Most guitarist wish they could play like Gilmour. I always thought he was the bridge from blues to new wave type guitar playing. Cream to the Cars? Maybe it was the whole band?
I need davids babies
This has to represent some sort of high point of human culture.
mesagoat perfectly worded, both of you.
It was actually around about the tipping point where we began to descend into depraved materialism and lunatic ideology, ultimately leading to mass nihilism. So it could be a high point, in that we may never reach that peak again.
Probably

• LYRICS •
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no-one called us to the land
And no-one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light
Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no-one calls us to move on
And no-one forces down our eyes
No-one speaks and no-one tries
No-one flies around the sun
Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
Inciting and inviting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no-one sings me lullabies
And no-one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky
Grazie mille Marta per il testo tanta luce a te
I do really think that this are the best lyrics in all Pop Rock history.
P.S. thanks a lot ❤
спасибо!
Overhead the Enterprise
Hangs motionless in high orbit
And deep beneath the toiling crews
In labyrinths of jefferies tubes
The echo of a red alert
Comes willowing across the coms
And everything is keen except the Breen
And no one calls us to beam down
And no one forces down our shields
No one hails, no distress calls
And no one warps around the sun
Haunting track. Wonderful keyboards and quite sublime.
I recently visited Pompeii and they have a shrine in homage to PF and this song playing, it was an amazing moment. :)
f***ck dude , many times i haved dream doing what u did , i think is a breathtaking moment.
Woah, that’s a trip!
Same here amazing place much better than cities today. Yep
I visited back in 2019 on a baking hot day in September and yes to hear this played as you walked round the arena was incredible!
Is that true. I would really like to see any image. I really would
Alternate title: David Gilmour challenges the Roman gods to a duel and they don't show up
9:03 he's goin crazy bcz they didn't showed up
lmao
Hahaha
oh, they did, few days ago one father was sending message across the sky to his son to this tune
They knew they had no chance against Gilmour, that’s why they did not come
I googled “masterpiece” and this is where I ended up-absolutely THE best.
Just great! For me there is no other groups so special, so inspiring, so leading, so groundbreaking like Pink Floyd. Just outstanding!
Ok David, Rick and Roger are awesome, but can we take a moment to appreciate Nick's drumming skills?
Not only that, Nick is a gentleman. 👍
The Man has 2 class podiums in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What a legend.

5:33 this part with richard, nick, and gilmour absolutely giving everyone who hears this part a boner

I like the traveling behind the speakers and the music, it's simply a masterpiece. Timeless.
It’s like they knew it would be a masterpiece!
The fact that there is no one in the audience makes it so much better.

The mixture of David’s psychedelic guitar groove, Nick’s rock-like drum beat and Richards jazz style synth really highlights their outstanding level of musical composition and clearly shows that they’re one of, if not, the greatest artists to ever exist.
People underestimate the groove of Rogers bass, without that it would take a lot of feel away from their songs IMO
@@darraghhenley7528 absolutely, that bass groove is so essential to this piece especially. I think it might even be the most important element for the feel of the latter half
@@darraghhenley7528 i was just about to write the same,Rodgers bass holds the whole thing together and is such a good hook
@@vinny9708 it does bring a lot of the feel to their songs they’re all musical geniuses in their own right and all have something to say and add to the songs you can’t compare them really, I’ll always respect each individual member for their own
YES!!! Well said,Rubin
I know Waters gets plenty of (deserved) praise for his musical writing, but damn, he should get some for his bass guitar skills as well. That bass in the second half is amazing
Pink Floyd is the most atmospheric rock band in history I think. When you listen to songs like these they just fill up your entire consciousness.
This is the BEST song when tripping on acid.
That middle section is the heaviest groove ever in rock and roll.
Some music is able to transport you to other places...magic is there, people either can recognize it or they can't.
Patrick- I get why your are saying that. But early Genesis, RUSH, YES and even some Grateful Dead all have their moments too.

Thats right!
This live version is MUCH better than the studio version. Especially Water's bass!!
yeah it is
I like the last part of the studio version more but everything else is nicer to listen to than the studio version.
Waters bass was incredibly done
Pink Floyd almost always sounds better live.
İs it on spotify? I mean 10 min version of echoes live at pompeii
I could never truly "get" Floyd, until I watched this on television a few years ago & this track grabbed my attention.
I'd always been into the Syd Barrett era, but this track is a piece of pure beauty, genius & the true essence of art in musical form...
In the year 3921 there will be a concert with no audience in the ruins of Washington, DC.
I'm looking at 2021. SGHTF long b4 3921
Change that to 2020
It won’t be as epic as this. No one will ever compare to Floyd.
Maybe Seattle or Portland, Pompei wasn't a so important city in the Roman Empire.
I’d pay good money to witness that...
