  • DIY Kitchen Countertop Makeover With Contact Paper (HD)
    I wanted to change my countertop but because I rent, there weren't too many options. I had to make sure whatever I put, came off without damaging (even though they were already somewhat damaged) the existing countertops. I also had to keep it on a budget. Contact Paper is a great alternative. DO NOT PUT HOT POTS OR PANS ON IT. DO NOT CUT DIRECTLY ON SURFACE! It only takes 2 seconds to grab a cutting board. :)
    If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me in the comment section below and if you recreate any of my DIY's Please tag me on Instagram or Twitter so I can see them.. you can find my links at the bottom of this description box.
    UPDATE: It's been two months and it still looks great! I have had water, juice and other stuff spill on it and nothing has happened to it. It is also very easy to clean. No lifting at corners or anywhere! The only thing left is to see if it comes off as easy as it clams it does but that will have to wait until I move or get bored with it. I will update when either one happens. :)

    Items I used
    1.) I bought Contact brand, Black & White Marble contact paper. I had a small counter so only used one roll and almost didn't have enough so make sure to measure your countertop first!
    I bought mine from a seller on Amazon but they no longer carry it. If you Google "Contact Brand Marble Contact Paper" you'll find some.
    2.) Utility Knife
    3.) Card
    4.) Scissors
    A tiny bit about myself:
    Hi, my name is Ivelisse. I've been artistic and creative my whole life. Unfortunately, it wasn't an easy one. I'm a survivor of many trials and tribulations. It caused me to develop serious mental health issues. I was self-medicating by using drugs and alcohol for over twenty years. On August 1st, 2014, I threw myself at the mercy of the Lord and prayed to God to save me. I asked God to forgive me for all my sins, and I forgave everyone who ever hurt me. I've been sober and clean ever since. Glory be to God! I started my walk with Christ along with my health and fitness Journey, and soon after, I found myself itching to get back to my passion, my art! But: I didn't just want to do it for myself. I wanted to share what God blessed me with and did for me and the joy He brings me to others. Not long after, I created my TH-cam channel, DIY No Need To Cry! I took the bottles that were killing me and turned them into art. With each piece I make, I replace a bad memory and create new ones with all of you! Welcome to the crafty fam! God bless you all!

    I’ve used this before on a round table, my tip is (and this saved my life) that if you use a hairdryer it makes the paper flexible which makes it easier to put around edges with no creases no nothing!

    Hello, my crafty fam! And If you're new to my channel, welcome! I've been through a lot in my life. I have even shared a few of those things with you guys over the years. Because of that, people are always asking me where they can donate to help me out. That truly warms my heart and although I may be struggling, I'm okay. I thank God I have all the basic needs. I have food, clean drinking water, clothes, a roof over my head, and access to medical care if needed but, not everyone has access to these things. I was homeless at one point in my life and I know how critical having these necessities are. If you would like to donate to me, I encourage you to give to someone who's really in need instead. I'm happy to announce that my videos now have donation buttons to charities that I think can help those less fortunate than us. I have checked these charities out myself and have even donated to them. I do NOT receive anything from these donations. It all goes to charity. If you enjoy my content, I hope you consider donating. God bless!

    Thank you sooo much!! I have this ugly, faded yellow and green laminate counter tops from the 1970's. I want marble counter tops but I can't afford that at this time. I just replaced my Mustard Yellow ( Harvest Gold) stove and refrigerator that was at least 45 years old ( they were here when we moved in 36 years ago). I love your DIY. I'm not too DIY savvy but I think I can do this. You did an amazing job, your counter tops looks Gorgeous! Great Video !!!

    Looks so awesome!!! I am using white and grey marble contact paper as sort of accents in my bathroom as I change the look of it. As I have covered more and more things with the contact paper, I ended up with a piece that was HORRIBLY wrinkled. I broke out the hairdryer and on low I used it just in front of the credit card. I managed to remove almost every bubble and wrinkle. Also, I had a small spot of an interior edge of a shelf where I rushed and tore it a bit. I turned the dryer on high and sort of melted it back together. I plan on finding a complimentary color for the counter. Maybe black marble with white veins. I am not sure yet. I am a long ways off of doing the counter!!!

    Edit: Update video th-cam.com/video/7MrXaE3ttfI/w-d-xo.html
    This is an inexpensive, temporary, noninvasive way to update or cover damaged countertops. Not everyone owns a house. Some of us rent and when you rent (for those of you that have never rented) you can NOT make permanent changes to anything in the apartment. If it was my house I could have done a million other thing's that would have looked better, worked more efficiently and would have been more durable/permanent. This was just a way for those of us who are not fortunate enough to own our own house to be able to have a little bit of creative freedom in what our kitchen can look like. I know, how dare us right. No, we can't seal it, use glue, put caulking, use heat tools, add water to make it stick more or add anything that will make it permanent. I had it on for 7 months and all I had to do was use pot holders if I was going to set pots right off the stove on top of it... and cutting boards to cut on, what a concept! Not that big of a deal. It never peeled, water never damaged it and it was easy to clean. I would do it again if I had to.

      DIYNoNeedToCry , I'm so glad I found your video! I recently had an idea about covering my counters with contact paper because I can't afford anything else right now. I bought some contact paper from dollar tree and then I started doubting my idea. Looks like it CAN be done! I do own my home so I can do whatever I want to it and I was wondering if you recommend applying the paper in a different way? Maybe by using heat or glue? Should I put a clear coat on it? Thanks for sharing this!

    I just did my kitchen and it does look great but here are the things I discovered. 1. You will have bubbles no matter what you do. Expect them. You can take an exacto knife to make a very small puncture in them to smooth them out. 2. Rounded corners are a pain. I tried the heat method but could not get the smooth look. I finally cut the material vertically and overlapped. Using a granite pattern helped tremendously and did not show my errors. 3. I have now tried 3 different types of contact paper and none of them will stick to particle board. I used a box cutter to solve this. Rather than try to wrap the paper under the counter top, I cut along the edge and it turned out great. Bottom line, patience is a virtue. Have fun.

    I done the contact paper on my counters in 2002 and I found a spray bottle of water you can spray counters and it keeps it from sticking right off the bat, and is easily moved to where I needed it to be and just took a card and used it as a squidgy, as u use it to smooth it out in place. Hope this also helps a little.

      Thank you for sharing but I didn't want to make the paper any more sticky than it already was. I have heard stories that doing with the water creates a stronger bond later on.

    Oh Man. I wish I had seen this video a month ago! I custom-ordered a marble contact paper wide enough so that I wouldn't have to section it. I assumed that was the only reason people papered in pieces (I love alliteration). Now I know I was wrong. The expensive contact paper I ordered had the consistency of wall paper, so it didn't handle very easily and then - after weeks of practicing with reversed gift wrap (because it has grid markings) and creating the perfect pattern to cut my contact paper from - I am finding it absolutely impossible to do this all in one piece without bubbles and even folds.
    So I'm going to try again tomorrow, starting with the back board, as you did. This has been positively painful but your video helped me understand why I am having such trouble, thanks!

    Warning, I have this on a desk, do not put anything hotter than a coffee cup on it, and then sometimes if the coffee cup is to hot it will melt a cup ring onto the surface, don't set down a warm or hot pot on it, cake pan or a curling iron... Other than that, its great, easy to clean and has a nice shinny look to it.

    • @DIYNoNeedToCry
      @DIYNoNeedToCry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, it's cheaper than anything else and depending on where you get your contact paper it's even cheaper. I've only used this brand, this one time so I don't know if other brands are as effective. You can find contact paper in the Dollar Tree, Walmart, Lowes or online, where I got mine. Good luck! :)

    • @DIYNoNeedToCry
      @DIYNoNeedToCry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not dumb lol.. that's actually a great question. They sell ones for countertops now but they are a little more expensive then the ones not marketed for countertops. It's not crazy expensive but still more money. I used regular contact paper for mine and I had no problems with it, aside from my struggle putting it on Lol!

      You're welcome and a tip. If you have the top boarder on your countertop as I did... Do that first, separately. That's where I went wrong. Let me know how it turns out! :)

    You should repaint the cabinets white and use a light grey on the walls and it will be stunning. All the while only spending less than $70! Win win! What you have already done already is great!

      Hello, thank you! That apartment was a rental, and you can't make changes like that when you rent. That's the reason I used the temporary contact paper in the first place. I managed to decorate and make everything work. I wish I had recorded it.

      I hear you... when you can save up a few dollars just go to your local hardware store and ask them what to use to fill broken countertops. I know they have stuff for that and it's usually under $20. After that you can buy the contact paper and lay it over the whole thing. Hope you'll be able to fix it soon hun. :)

    Nice job, but I wonder about durability? You can also use 1-3 parts of liquid soap and water, spray the counter top with the solution before you apply contact paper. Makes it so much easier to smooth any tacky film...

    • @DIYNoNeedToCry
      @DIYNoNeedToCry  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It hasn't given me any problems. I use a cutting board when cutting and a potholder when placing something really hot on it. Cleanup is easy and no lifting of any kind sense I put it on. :)

    Hahahha she put that metro card to good use lollllol. How much is the fare now I heard it went up to 3 dollars. I used to live in NYC now I'm in LA. You did a great job honey thanks.

    • @DIYNoNeedToCry
      @DIYNoNeedToCry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, Thank you... I'm not from there... my boyfriend is. He started laughing when I told him and he said it was 2.50. LA must be such a big difference from NY. How do you like it there?

    • @Alisa07l
      @Alisa07l 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well you need a car. The public transportation is not as Advance as NYC but then again NYC is more congested. You get more for your money here when it comes to renting a place. I do sometimes miss the public transportation system in NYC. For when I need to get somewhere on time. The traffic here in LA is torture. The longest i ever been in traffic was 6 hours and this is after being forced to take the side streets. The destination I was trying to get to only supposed to take me an hour and 30 minutes.

    • @Alisa07l
      @Alisa07l 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember the fare used to be 2 dollars but that was in 2008. It has gone up 50cents I see. They probably will bring it up another $ 50 cents in the near future. I also heard that downtown Brooklyn near the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridge is the new Manhattan. Never used be be like that before I moved here. Then again it's great here lol I'm happy I trade in my timbs for sandals lol.

    Good job :) how do you think this would work on tile countertops?

    • @DIYNoNeedToCry
      @DIYNoNeedToCry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, It would work but it would sink in where the grout is. So it would still look like tiles but with a new pattern. Also I'm hearing that it is not that easy to take off if you plan on leaving it on for a long time. I left mine on for 7 months and had no problem taking it off but I'm hearing differently from others. I'm not sure if the brand, method of installing or length of time had anything to do with it but it's something to think about if you are thinking of doing it. :)
