The iCarly revival actually did a decent job at updating the show for a modern audience. You can really see how much the actors and characters have grown, while having their wardrobes be updated, and being allowed to swear now.

    • @iamanti8367
      @iamanti8367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +91

technically no. updating the show for a modern audience in this video was used to imply that the show didn't change the age group. that's what gossip girl did, they still mostly cater to teenagers so they had to make the story appealing to the modern audience of the same age group. while iCarly caters to the same people it was made for back then. they have a natural flow of simply growing up, as if show didn't end. it's not updating, it's continuing.

remakes are extremely unnecessary because it's just telling the same story all over again BUT reboots are 100% allowed to have lots of changes, that's on its definition. If it's bad it's bad, but not solely because of the changes. Also animated series reboots are doing way better than the live action ones.

What drives me crazy is that they could've made Mean Girls 2 into a sequel, not a reboot. I guess they couldn't have made a sequel following the same characters from the original though, since Lindsey Lohan was going through a lot of emotional issues in the late 2000s/early 2010s and probably wouldn't be in the right state of mind to play Cady at that moment.

Retelling of old stories is very common in theater. In fact, most dramatic stories could find roots in ancient fables. This is where tropes come from. Even Shakespeare, the most performed and adapted English author, was taking notes from Ancient Greek dramas like Oedipus Rex when he wrote Hamlet (which definitely is the basis for The Lion King). The three witches of M*cbeth are harkening to the fates in Greek tragedy.

I prefer retellings and reimaginings instead of reboots and remakes. Of course, it depends on each film, but i generally love adaptations of classic literature. And i almost always hate revivals. And i always ignore spinoffs and usually stop watching the main show after the spinoff launches because i feel forced to watch the spinoff to understand references, and i refuse to forcibly watch something.

  • @meltdownremix1996

I think the whole revival/reboot/remake/etc thing CAN work if the original work didn't fullfill it's original purpose or the creators have something new/better to say with this world and characters, so it's not all bad, like Rocko's Modern Life's special Static Cling. But recently it's so obvious that Corporate is so desperate to cash in that they end up being souless and oversaturated.
Sometimes you end up with something so bizarre like The Banana Splits Movie though which may be one of the weirdest movies of the past decade.

I have to agree with most comments here in the threads: Winx production should have been more thoughtful of The Winx storyline. In other words, they needed more time to create a more believable and updated version of the script (plotline) and allow the characters to develop without adding stupid over-done cliches. Also, when I heard about Charmed getting a reboot I told everyone 'It going to be cancelled very early. I rather remember the original ending as it is' So when it was cancelled after three seasons... well, Hollywood and CW should have known better.

7:17 Oh no! That Avengers is actually not a version of the Marvel Avengers. That Avengers is an adaptation of “The Avengers” the 1960 British TV show about spy’s. That TV show is the reason why in the UK The Avengers is actually called Avengers Assemble.

WAIT-WAIT-WAIT...... family matters was a spin off of Perfect Strangers?????? I didn't know that and I watched both! (Though admittedly, less Perfect Strangers since I was young and family Matters appealed younger (I think).
Also... "In a way" "Friends" was sort of a spin off of "Mad about You" since Phoebe's twin sister Ursula was a character in that show. And in 1 ep, Paul & Jamie (main characters of that show) mistake Phoebe for Ursula and Phoebe's very confused and it's kind of fun to know it's all in the same universe. I think Kramer from Seinfeld also showed up as his character in that show.

Okay but the Carrie Diaries prequel to Sex and the City is a genuinely a good teen show if you forget that it's a prequel cause there definitely are some plot holes. Worth the watch!

Thea, named of course Dorothea, went to a club at a halloween event. She took her roomates red shoes for her (loosely inspired) costume of Little Red Ridding Hood. She also took a plushie as a wolf. At the club, she finds a school friend, she recognizes the shoes, and says it's very odd Roomie lend them, but alas! Oh, and that dog? It's supposed to be a wolf. Oh, a doggie like that could never be a wolf, it looks like hes called Sparky or Toto and loves belly rubs. She leaves. The night goes on. Thea finds a dude dress as a scarecrow, who spills a drink all over her. Thea then takes off the over dress and is left with her white petty coat and blue undershirt. She's yelling at Scarecrow Guy outside of the bathrooms, telling him he has to be more carefull when swimming truth the crowd and to thibk a little, gosh, what else could have happened if he had two drinks and a mask on and the club is full, huh?? Then, Guy dress as a Lion and guy dress and a Robot ask whats happening, they recognize her from uni. She explains. Robot offers Thea his jacket (blue and white of course). Mrs Friend of Roomie walks out of the bathroom and SEES THEA WEARING HIS RECENTLY EX-ED JACKET. She walks up to Thea, "I'm gonna tell Roomie you ruinnedher shoes". Thea is devastated. She HAS to get them clean and home safe ASAP. She trips her way out the club to find a laundromat. She is followed by the guys, and they all try to find a darn laundromat. Lion says to better just get them home safe, because the streets are dangerous and scary. Scarecrow is trying to make up for the incident so he plans how to find a laundromat and get home before sunrise, why?? Because Robot guy is trying to distract Roomie's friend, dancing with her, telling her stuff about getting back together and all. That SHOULD work for at least two hours. It's taking Lion, Scarecrow, Thea and Toto a looong time to find Oz's Laundromat, the closest 24 hours laundromat. Drunkily they stare at the screen of a phone telling them where to go. Follow the Yellow Line, they mutter, to not get distracted. thry start chanting "FOLLOW THE YELLOW LINE" and skipping in the right direction. They arrive and Ozzie himself helps them to clean up the gosh darn shoes, and while they wait for some process to happen, Robot (not so drunk as the rest and weirded out by faking feelings with mrs Roomies Friend) arrives on an uber. Ozzie gives everyone great life advice that can only work when you are drunk in halloween, they all learn valuable lessons. DING!! It's shoe time. Robot said mrs roomie friend had low battery on her phone and was taking a good ol fashioned cab. They HAD to hurry. But wait! Look at the time!? It's soooo late and there Are No More Ubers! We can walk and get to a Main Avenue and get a cab there (queue to some instances of hardships like angsty teenagers throwing apples from some window sill because fuck halloween and more, that are more terrible because they are drunk and not thinking straight) until they get a cab and arrive home and get the shoes in place. Next day, Robot has a heart to heart talk with Roomies Friend, Lion takes Taekwondo as a self defense thing and Scarecrow... idk something. Thea wakes up with a terrible hangover, and hazey memories of what had happened before she woke up.

NBC did a Wizard of Oz reimagining tv show called Emerald City that was actually pretty good and I loved that the leading lady wasn’t white. I’m usually against classics being touched at all, but sometimes they turn out great.

The juxtaposition of The Avengers 1998 and The Avengers 2012 makes it look like The Avengers 2012 was a remake of Avengers 1998 when they are both totally different properties. The Avengers 1998 was a movie adaptation of the 1960s BBC series The Avengers while The Avengers 2012 was of course adapted from Marvel Comics.
    Great video though!

I would love to see an adaptation of the original Sweet Valley High books. While there was a tv show made back in the 90s, I feel it would be cool to see how it could be made to fit modern audiences, especially considering how bizarre it gets in the later books (werewolves, vampires, french royalty despite FRANCE, murder, romance drama, etc.). Like how would you translate some of that? I would love to see it.

I don’t think I would mind all the reboots/revivals/remakes so much if they were actually good and meant something, but they rarely are so I can’t see the point. Most end up just feeling like a cash grab and entirely unnecessary - I’d understand a bit more if fans were really pushing for it but I think the general consensus is most shows don’t need to be brought back for whatever reason. It hurts my heart that future generations might look back and recall popular shows as their meh reboots instead of the originals (gossip girl and winx off the top of my head)

A very, very difficult topic. For adaptations: I'm all for doing an adaptation of a literature classic every couple of decades so that the Jane Austen/Shakespeare/Dickens etc. classics are made known to younger audiences who would probably never watch an adaptation that's 70 years old. Sometimes though, it doesn't work. For me, the Little Women version from the 90s with Winona Ryder is the best one. The one with Emma Watson from a few years back simply didn't work out for me.
As for something like reboots and remakes and such... For example, I never understood why there had to be new Spider Man movies only a couple of years after the Tobey Maguire ones. To this day, I haven't seen the Andrew Garfield one(s?) because I see no sense in that. I think that not enough years have passed to justify doing something like that. Now, of course, Marvel has to do things like new Spider Man movies etc. to fit all of their huge universe together (which I find very, very tiring by now).
Although some Disney live actions were okay, mostly, they were disappointing. Maleficent was a very good idea, and even fixed some plot holes (like, let's take Aurora back to her parents out of hiding on the day of the curse instead of, oh, let's wait a day to see if we can trick the curse and keep the girl hidden until that time). Mostly though, they're weak and colourless, and very uninspired, but Disney knows people will watch them anyway, so why put any effort into this. The worst of all this (and I really don't know what to call what Disney is doing there) is Star Wars. George Lucas has sold his creation to the devil with mouse ears, and they only make money out of it while pretending to care about the franchise (maybe some do, but they're still doing a shit job of it; 90 % of fanfiction is way better). And here, too, the sad thing is, fans will watch it, no matter how bad it is. They will complain about it afterwards, but they will still watch it. I'm no exception to that, mostly. I've waited twenty years for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It wasn't bad, but could have been better, but, of course, I still watched it (and was ridiculously grateful that they had Qui-Gon appear at the end for exactly one minute; I really counted on them ignoring him completely).
What I hate though is all the series popping up out of the ground like mushrooms. Oh, there's a character that's been on screen for five minutes: Let's give them a spinoff of their own, we're doing something good for the fans there, they want to know more about this universe. No, Disney, you're doing something good for your purse.
Although the Mandalorian is a great show, and something new in the Star Wars verse that actually worked, otherwise, I don't want to see the distant cousin of a minor character's best friend get their own show. I'm not interested in that, and I also want to have some kind of connection to the prequels or originals, thank you very much.
And they also could have been a little bit more creative with doing the Sequel trilogy. It's basically the complete same story as the original series, including, oh, Rey grows up on a *sand* planet.
And the absolute worst is that now that Disney owns Star Wars, they are so arrogant and presumptuous to simply declare decades of books etc. that told what happened after Episode Six as non-canon, just like that. They could have incorporated these tons of very good, intricate ideas (doing the same with the Jedi apprentice series about Obi-Wan's apprenticeship, but in turn, they never offered any alternative, simply declared it non-canon like bad fanwork or something), instead of simply creating a story that copies the originals. I hate this.
So. Now, I've ranted enough, but I had to get this off my chest^^

Ofc companies do these for money but I also think it became so hard for them to make a fun movie without being made fun of and criticized , everyone searches and analyzes what’s wrong with the movies and series a]that to make a reboot is kinda safer if you do it right , for example I don’t think anyone would like Wild child if it came out today

The Hobbit was written before the Lord of the Rings. Yes it was a greedy cash crab by Peter Jackson since he took a 300 page book and made it into three movies while randomly throwing in things Tolkien never wrote; like whole characters and storylines, and fan service references to his other “Tolkien “ movies, but canonically it is first. I don’t know if you meant this, but you seemed to imply that the Hobbit was created from whole cloth by Jackson and not the epic book it is.

I think the problem is, most sequels/reboots/adaptations, etc, are from movies/books/shows, etc, that were initially received (more than) well, which means everybody is comparing the sequel/reboot/adaptation, etc, to the original, and it usually doesn't live up to that standard. It's practically impossible to view it as it's own thing, separate from the original.

The reboot I respect is the MCU. A lot of it was more of an adaptation, because it was working on superheros that had not been done in movies very recently. I am not sure if Iron Man had ever had a movie adaptation before, so previous on-screen material was probably all cartoons. The Hulk was a lot more recent, with the Eric Bana movie not that long before teh MCU Incredible Hulk, butt then if I understand it right (never having properly sat and watched TIH) the MCU movie is not the story of how Bruce first became the Hulk, but a story of what happens to him some time after. Captain America has had a fair few versions, and I think there was one in the 90s, but the MCU started with a period piece on Steve's origin (framed in modern day sequences at start and end), and then going into Cap's iconic "Man Out Of Time" shtick. But Marvel!Thor didn't have much outside cartoons, Black Widow even less, Hawkeye even less than that. These are characters who may have popped up in one episode in another superhero's show, but Avengers took them and made the huge. And the MCU kept doing that, bringing previously less adapted heroes, (and digging up more recent revived characters and giving us them onscreen in such a good way it made the actor's carreer - yes I am talking about Bucky Barnes, who had been revived in the comics only 6-7 years prior to Captain America, but the plot of "The First Avenger" was tailored to bring in the Winter Soldier, since Bucky's fall was a huge emotional point of the story, and that plot is a Winter Soldier ret-con, I believe). Seriously, I cannot express how I love the MCU for making Bucky such a hugely famous character, and he's going to be in the up-coming Thunderbolts too, where I hope he, Yelena and Alexi have a real Russian thing going. But the notable thing I feel about the MCU is how it managed to get in characters whose film rights were... difficult, into the movies. First was the deal for the Maximoff twins, which yeah sad it involved killing off Pietro, but then they were able to play on that in WandaVision, but the big one? Spider-Man. The thing is, they did not do yet another remake - didn't go retelling Peter's origin story because we meet Peter through the lense of Tony Stark. But there were, in the Spider-Man movies themselves, indications that MCU!Peter went through the same general events - in NWH Peter outright says he got bitten by a spider, in Homecoming May is seen wearing rings on a chain around her neck and Peter says they've had a hard time in the last year, in FFH Peter has a suitcase with Ben Parker's initials on it, and going back to NWH, Peter does not react oddly when the other two Peters mention Uncle Ben. That is the other big point about the MCU Spider-Man - it made the previous versions of Spider-Man canon - somewhere out in the canon MCU multiverse, the other two Spider-Man franchises exist.
So when it comes to reboots and remakes, I effin' adore the MCU Spider-Man because it validated both previous Spider-Mans, even to the point where, when Peter 3 (Andrew Garfield) is talking himself down, Peter 1 (Tobey McGuire) says "No! You're amazing!", validating the ASM movies. Can you tell I loved NWH?
