I like how in "She's all that" Zacks sister when she was presenting Laney she said "May I present the new,not improved but different Laney." She didn't say "looks better" or "new and improved" instead she just called her different than how she usually looks. She didn't try to make her feel ashamed by the way she looks, it's not liked she looked bad anyway its just the way how people perceived her. I have lots of respect for the sister👍
ok, but Laney was amazing before this fckn makeover and all they were trying to do is make her look more basic and erase her individuality. any other female artist in reality would prbably punch you in the face if you touch her things or clothing.😅
They also remark that the reason Zack was against Laney being the bet wasn't that she was ugly but that she was weird and unapproachable. He says just that.
Yeah but she did make fun of her for not tweezing and for wearing glasses(which ig she just stops needing after the makeover scene because we never see her put in contacts). I also hated the makeover, since even if they say she's not "improved, but different" it doesn't change the fact that it's still reinforcing the tired tropes of 1) women needing to get rid of their glasses to be beautiful and 2) women needing to get rid of their individuality to fit into conventional feminine beauty standards for the sake of attracting a guy. She looked perfectly fine before.
the main premise of her losing a sponsorship because HE cheated on HER is legitimately bizarre and generally demonstrates a lack of care and attention to detail
Surprisingly I found this part kind of realistic. Women get painted as the “evil bitch” on the internet so often, even when they’re actually the victims of something. I mean imagine if Dixie d’amelio and Noah beck (tik tok stars who are dating) went live and it was revealed that Noah was cheating on Dixie in the live. If Dixie had a meltdown and snot came out of her nose and she threw stuff at him, i don’t doubt that the internet would still find a way to villainize or meme her despite her actually having been the victim in this situation. A tik tok star does something embarrassing? that’s easy bait for ppl to make fun of even if it’s the dude in the wrong.
@@plummuff i really do get your point because women's emotions are always mocked, but to say that she loses a sponsorship over it is not good plotting. there would be such backlash over any memeing of it that the cruelty and mockery could hardly be considered the dominant response, and dropping her would cause more public outcry. it just wouldn't be good business practice, which is what makes that unbelievable to me
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING!!! like i was like if this was real ppl would be on her side not his even if she had a snot bubble. like the idea that just cause she had a snot bubble ppl unfollowed her and werent on her side is sooo dumb
At this point, I'm fully convinced they chose to remake this movie because they thought it would be a safe premise for Addison to do considering her acting range while they could capitalize on the nostalgia trend and lure viewership. The original film was a safe movie that didn't demand a lot of emotional stakes compared to other movies, and this movie has even less stakes, is the safest of safe premises, and it doesn't require Addison to do any real method acting beyond what she's familiar with. Even with all these things, it's still a bland, unfortunate film.
To be honest i don't understand the hate towars her, i mean the movie is not a masterpiece that's for sure! But is entertaining, and Alisson does a good job. Is not a Daniel Day Lewis perfomance that's for sure but too be honest professional actors aren't doing Daniel Day Lewis perfomance's eithers so.... I don't understand the hate
@@transparentsoulspul5507 it’s not hate at all but rather just objective criticism, she is a good dancer, as for singer ehh we’ll see but actor? No just no, the only reason she landed a role is because of her big popularity, she seems like a sweet girl but honestly having her first role be a main lead in a movie is a bad idea, especially if it’s a remake because people can compare it more
@@NoName-dx1no Well i never said she was great what i think is there is a overwhelming amount of hate towards her compared to another people in the industry young actors that are related to a producer or a director and get to be in major roles without any acting skill but they don't get as many hate as she, only because they are not dancing in tik tok but are using there privilige in the same way. In not a "stan" or anything like that in fact i keep my distance with social media because sometimes is just a waste of time but i don't like how they put this young girl over extreme scrutinity for taking advantage of her position let's be honest most people in her position would take a major role if they had the chance even if they don't have anything natural talent, and capitalize in nostaligia is athing because most people liked it! In fact we are watching a video about a shitty remake so.... 🤷🏻♂️
i hate movies like this because the whole point of Pygmalion (that this trope is largely based on) is that the person who is made over DOESNT END UP with the person who makes them over. they grow past them and realize they can have value on their own even tho the other character “made them.” if this movie had ended with the guy thriving (not with Addison Rae) it would’ve been so much better.
think we all can agree that Addison's talents shined throughout this movie. Her ability to give us absolutely nothing in this movie is spectacular. overall the movie was meh,she has room for improvement in her acting skills
The worse thing is there are actors out there who have to work so much harder, and only get background roles, while Addison practically didn’t need to do anything to get a starring role
@Olanna Momah Still gross. They had auditions and decided to skip better actresses, just because this one has tiktok followers. And regarding the "She worked hard". These other actresses worked much harder than her. Certainly all their lives. Not just a few weeks/months during pre-production.
@@enoyna9495 No one is hating on her. Just on her acting and the privilege she is getting. Also, it takes a narcissist to think that they are actors and can skip steps to get roles just because they have social media followers. I understand why people would be irritated by that. 10 years ago, no one would have batted an eye about that. But we live in a day and age where people are tired of seeing undeserving people getting what they want, just because they're rich and pretty. Ironically enough, this is literally the plot of this movie. Just because you are popular on social media doesn't mean that you are worth more than any other person, and should be treated differently.
Y’all hyped this movie up so much I’m adding it to my tomorrow’s watch list lmao upd: guys i’ve just watched it and it was so much fun, it definitely deserves way more recognition💀💀
I honestly wish we could get teen movies similar to how Legally Blonde, Mean Girls and Clueless are. Its like in the 1980s to the 2000s people actually tried to more interesting for the target audience yet now nobody really cares to make an effort. To All the Boys I Loved Before is by far the best teen movie I have seen in the modern day which is really sad because if that series can be good then why can't more go on a similar path. I kinda feel like misogyny has played a big role into the downfall of teen movies, the whole ideology that teens more specifically women will take shit movies and actually enjoy them which is why the Kissing Booth and After even became a thing but nobody with taste actually enjoys those films. There is a reason why classic teen movies or chic flicks are still watched and talked about today, its because they are actually good and are timeless. I just wish more directors would start listening to the target audience instead of thinking this is trash we would like.
Another good teen movie of recent would be The Half of It. It uses the trope of soulmates really well and feels so much more mature than movies like He’s all that and so on.
I think teen romcoms from the 80s-2000s were also better because, excluding nostalgia, everything felt very genuine and realistic. Even Clueless, which had a popular girl as the main character, made her likable and relatable to an extent. He’s All That, Kissing Booth and After all feel disconnected from reality while also trying too hard to make the characters relatable.
The original film actually had more diversity. Notice how in the remake, everybody is light skinned, even the characters of African descent. The Indian best friend is the darkest person in the whole movie and she's not even as dark as some of the characters were in the original movie. At least in the original they weren't afraid to show black people with dark skin.
@@nadeau "I don't see skin color" is a lame attempt to ignore issues do better, your simple minded logic has been debunked again and again! Time to educate yourself pal.
Hahahaha I remember watching Not Another Teen Movie as a (too young) child, and at that time I didn’t realize it was a parody of other movies (I hadn’t seen those either so I didn’t get the references). I was just like wow…. Teenagers are weird
it was the first film i watched with unsupervised control over the tv and i still to this day cannot watch american football because of that one scene where the dude straight up gets ripped in half
to be fair, her costuming is quite literally just how Addison dresses. there's a lot of memes about how the way she dresses like a 30 year old - a lot of cardigans and the like, which is cute, but.. it's hard to believe she's got as many followers as she does. i was more annoyed about how they gave us "teenage boys" with perfectly maintained scruff/facial hair. no 18 year old is going to have perfectly maintained and tailored facial hair, and it ages their cast even more
I disagree about Adisson Rae, i know her character was similar to her, but even then her acting was awful. The lines she delivered about his mother's death and him missing her was excruciating 💀
I miss 90s movies, at least the teens looked like individuals, not social media carbon copies (albeit they also followed fashion and beauty trends, they still looked normal if that makes sense?). This culture of IG face to be cast in movies is why each new movie is cringe. It isn’t relatable to be a teen anymore. I lived for She’s All That and at 31, I still do lol
@@arisworld6711 There are so many talented actresses out there who represent us better. Maybe not as famous or perfect but that's the beauty of youth. Normalise real teens!
@@kp782 Not exactly. Movies from the 90s to early 2000s were still problematic (sexism, racism, fat phobia, etc). And they still sent a poor message to teens. Hell the original She's All That was still problematic. At least now we're trying to be more diverse. But we could always do better. And movies still try to send a good message to teens.
it's really funny how netflix is trying to "aglorithmize" hits and looking at this on paper, I can see why they would be so confident this would work -- it's a 90s remake (nostalgia!), it features a tiktok star (she's popular on one platform so of course she'd be popular on the other), there's a shallow critique of social media (so it's not a regular rom com, it's a smart rom com) -- and yet, they forgot about crucial aspects that make a film good or at least memorable like a good script, good casting, good costume design, etc.
i actually that with this film netflix was just like fuck it, make it in that people will talk about it, and it’s really bad but everyone criticizes and hate watches
honestly something that would’ve been different would be if the bet was for him to turn her into a geek. like, her boyfriend does something that pisses the geeks off and they decide to make a bet to make her fall in love with one of them. Since Padget is social media famous and seeks validation from strangers and has a shitty boyfriend, it wouldn’t be too out of reach to imagine that if an artistic guy like Cameron (minus the not like other boys thing) comes along and decides to make her his “muse” that she would fall. She ends up falling in love with Cameron because he pays attention to her and validate her the same way her followers do
That would have been cool, or the goths make a bet, and they have to convert a popular person to a goth, and the popular person discovers their love for eyeliner and heavy metal, then you can still have a big transformation scene where the person actually looks different afterwards.
Interesting that in this trope, men have to get rid of something that hides their face (-> facial hair) while women have to hide their face even more (-> make up). A man is considered hot when we can see his face better. A woman is considered hot when she changes her whole face with make up.
How was that boy "ugly" before the makeover? He still fitted beauty standards and looked better than that guy the movie portrayed as attractive, also the "makeover" was just cutting hair and shaving, everything else is pretty much the same.
I mean at least the remake did the same as the original in that sense- the makeovers happen to two conventionally attractive, interesting, kind, intelligent teenagers 🙄 I’d love for a movie to actually attempt a real makeover, but let’s be honest that would never happen. The makeover trope just reenforces the idea that it’s what’s on the outside that counts, anyway.
@@shannonceleste5557 if they did attempt a real makeover it would offend everyone in the audience that look like the person trying to change lol (e.g. losing weight is usually a huge factor in real life makeovers but putting it in a movie is another story)
Padget’s wardrobe in particular made it really hard for me to focus on the movie because she’s dressed like someone who ran a fashion blog in 2013 thinks the kids today would dress. She has a few pieces that are cute and on trend, but they’re juxtaposed by dated pieces that feel too old for the character. In a time where thrifting and “vintage” styles are all the rage there’s no excuse for a “poor” character you’re trying to establish as a popular trend setter to look like that.
Is there a scene where shes not wearing pink? Is Netflix still colour coding their characters instead of, you know. Giving them an actual sense of style
I wished that Quinn and Nisha had been the main characters instead, or had more of a role. It was refreshing that none of the characters made a big deal about two girls liking each other.
Why does Hollywood insist on casting Tik Tok stars in nearly ALL of their projects now?! This movie makes "Attaway General" look like an Emmy contender in comparison!
They clearly don't want to pay actual actors or promote things properly so Tiktok stars are comparatively cheaper and have a built in fan base. Netflix is being lazy and for as much money as they make it's pathetic how they're cutting corners like this
@@muunprince1992 I heard about that too! With the Gala previously inviting MUAs and other TH-camrs I'm not surprised they'd invite Tiktokers now but I'm still disappointed like I don't want to sound too elitist but what ever happened to prestige?
You know, something that bothers me personally is i feel like there’s a point to the makeover trope that goes over people’s heads. What separates the in crowd from the out crowd isn’t looks, it’s a combination of behavior, shared interests and wanting to fit in. An attractive person who wants to be an outcast and doesn’t want to be trendy will be an outcast. Laney was an outcast by choice because she didn’t like what she saw with the popular kids. She didn’t dress for style she dressed for function, she hid behind plain slightly oversized glasses. And she wasn’t confident in her body, but in her mind. Her makeover was mental, as they usually are, just like devil wears prada. And still today, so many kids dress the same, it’s not nerdy or weird to watch anime anymore, but there is still an in crowd and an out crowd. Idk what it’s based on these days but i taught at a high school, you see it.
OMG thank you!! I’ve been seeing people criticizing movies with makeover scenes lately, saying how unnecessary they are and it seems like everyone is misunderstanding that these scenes always serve a purpose to the plot. They’re not just silly filler material to pad the runtime or to make an “ugly duckling” into a beautiful swan. I also want to point out, because the scene from “Not Another Teen Movie” was used in this video and many other arguments against “She’s All That”, Laney was NOT supposed to be ugly he called her scary and unapproachable because of how stand-off ish she was. The makeover is just so she won’t feel or look like an outcast at Preston’s party.
@@charnellejackson3641 yes exactly!! And let’s face it, Laney did have an attitude problem, she was angsty and isolated and didn’t want to connect with anyone. Her makeover was the first step in getting her to open up to people, which is why it was so messed up when she got bullied there, like, see this is why I don’t try with you people.
Totally agree! It's sad that we dont have that much individuality anymore but I'm nearly 17 and I just dont care I dress for myself and the way I want to.
I have to disagree with "these films are catered young adults"... They are absolutely not! They are catered to the 9-13 year old maybe 14 year old people. Younger Gen Z older Gen Alpha. The kids who want to grow up so badly and think that being a teenager is filled with parties, good hair, skin (even though they tried to say all teens deal with breakouts) I genuinely thought that being a teenager was really all the hype until I became one.
Yeah, this movie gives me Disney Original Movie vibes, as it, over the top, plays HEAVY into old worn stereotypes that don't really exist, extremely painfully simple plot that after you get older makes you go "wait none of that made sense", and fantasy fulfillment with big parties, stylish friends/clothes, how easy it is to get a boy to like you, etc.
" The kids who want to grow up so badly and think that being a teenager is filled with parties, good hair, skin (even though they tried to say all teens deal with breakouts) I genuinely thought that being a teenager was really all the hype until I became one." I've heard that so many times on comment threads for teen movies! I lived a sheltered life as a teen so I kinda accepted that wouldn't be my experience, yet I was still surprised to hear others had similar experiences. It makes me feel that we really need to move away from these common teen movie tropes.
As a person in the younger Gen Z demographic, most of my classmates would most definitely cringe really hard at this movie. Most of us (At least in my school) have our own style (cottagecore, vintagecore, emo/alt etc.), and most of us wouldn't wear what this remake has to offer. The only people I see wearing this, is the cocky "TRIES TO ACT COOL" "TRIES TO BE 19 YEARS OLD" "TRIES TO BE TIKTOK STAR" kind of girls - I do go to a girl's school, so I don't really have an input on what boys wear, but from what I remember before going to an all girls school, is that the boys dress REALLY casually.
@@makarounie8877 That’s literally only because everybody and their grandmother is on TikTok. When movies come out whoever is in charge of wardrobe design is trying to influence someone. The OG influencers. People who pay people like Addison to promote their product. There are children who I know that are very young Gen Z and older GEN alpha Who would watch this and think “yeah this is cool!”. Besides I’m calling it right now, Everyone is talking smack about the 2010s fashion and how ridiculous we looked. But how the fashion cycle is going… A lot of what Addison is wearing is probably what a lot of people are going to want to wear pretty soon. Not necessarily you or your friends, but the majority of people who just see what’s on the Mannequin.
6:34 i couldn't agree more. it seems like every new movie that has teens just HAS to point out how "obsessed" we are with screens. for over a year our school was online, what do you expect
If they wanted to make the boys look like your everyday highschooler, they should have dressed them like a highlighter. With a focus on shoes. A lot of shoes
that trend followed me from middle school to high school, at least you would never run into them because they were dressed as human highlighters. could see them from a mile away
thought the same with Addison’s acting. She seems to be playing herself, so it isn’t that bad in the not so emotional moments. Her acting flaws are shown through the emotional parts. It was kinda funny to see her pretend to cry. She could probably continue acting if she played similar characters.
I am kinda surprised that you didn’t mention Laney (played by Rachel Leigh Cook) who was the main lead of the original 1999 version & who is playing the single mom of the female lead in the 2020 Netflix version. I am wondering if Laney was supposed to have this simple / boring cameo or if it was a hint that the she actually ended up in marrying Zack but got devorced later (which would be sad but interesting turn of the original movie). Sadly they didn’t give her any important scene - which is why (I assume) you didn’t mention her cameo in your review. Either way, the new 2020 version SUCKS big time (I hated everything about it) & Netflix should promise to never ever do a teenager movie remake again. 👍🏻
For another lesbian relationship about young people that is presented in a non-fetishistic way is from the 2008's 90210 reboot. While the show overall is ahem... not good (well it's a CW show, you might want to grade on a curve), there's this arc between Adrianna and Gia that is very well developed and engaging. Pretty good considering when it came out and the overall writing talent on that show.
I also gotta contribute with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which showed one of the first depictions of a queer woman couple ever on television and it wasn't sexualized or treated any different than any other couple on the show. Even though it's such a cult classic tv show, it's still underrated in terms of the mainstream audience, a lot of people haven't even heard about it. Tons of shows and movies that people loved years after Buffy aired, were directly inspired or even taken and copied from Buffy and it deserves respect for being the first to do many things, such as a non sexualized lesbian couple. Always funny seeing people reacting to the show and think some aspects and themes of the show has been overdone in media or cheesy, when Buffy was the first one to do it and everyone else just copied it later. Buffy has had such huge cultural impact.
Yes!! I was so pleasantly surprised when they introduced that storyline, I kept thinking how amazing they would be together and wanting them to kiss and then they did!!! Adrianna's girl group phase when she realises she's bi and has a bunch of new female friends is my absolute favourite bit of the show, shame it doesn't last that long :(
I liked your commentary. I feel like the DCOM movie Geek Charming did a better job with their storyline and characters using this trope (popular girl and outcast boy) It wasn’t perfect, but for a lower budget made for TV movie the clothing, acting, and writing are superbly better👌
I also thought it was odd how Cameron willingly let Padgett cut his hair that short, especially when you consider that he looked pretty worried before she did it. It was implied that she, his sister, and his friend convinced him to go along with it, but they could have used it for his character development to show him coming out of his shell or something
24:15 - 24:35 i really liked the point you made about Padgett’s outfits and that she should wears expensive-looking outfits at school but more comfortable at home. Maybe her outfits could show her getting more comfortable and closer to Cameron; from wearing expensive-looking outfits to more comfortable outfits as the movie went on. I really enjoyed your review on this movie.

The only thing I could think during the movie was that gen z and teenage kids hate things from 2010, the cheug thing and all that. Then why on earth an influencer would wear a wardrobe so iconic for those years. The sandals, the dresses, even the eos. I was like “wait but those things today are almost a meme”. And it’s not like the entire movie universe looked like a disney 2010’s teen movie because the sister had a decent couple of outfits and she had the curtain bangs and all that. And even the nice friend of padge wear nice fits, so it didn’t make sense to me at all
exactly!!! the asian girl actually had really cute outfits - so its not like they couldnt have put in a little effort. her lowkey academia fits were so cute!!
Lately american media got thinking "Are these series and movies getting worse by the day or am I just getting too old for this?" and honestly I can't find a satisfaying answer. Things sed to be huge success right away, legions of fans everywhere and now it just feels like they are trying to make things that Genz wouldnt complain about, but no one actually enjoys any of it... it feels like american media is slowly but surely withering
@@motjon well I do think so. Lately everyone seems to be afraid of getting canceled for not being woke enough. They, the studios, writers arent and it shows. So they push some seriousness that dont land while in the near past there was less worry wlto full campy and wacky. Just being fun, you know?
There's no way that's the most unpopular guy on school. Where are the creepy guys, the shy guys, the stalkers, I mean, even the incels, where are they?
i would actually have liked that the reason he's unpopular is mainly because he is mean, and not his appearance. The creep factor could have been used with his photography, but they didn't use it well... We kinda see that at the beginning of the movie, the way he shames his little sister, how he constantly provokes Jordan and the popular guys...I would have loved that despite of looking superficial, the tiktok girl is actually sweet, whereas he is really sort of mean and that's the reason why he's unpopular.
@@walqqr1 But he's rich and a social media star. He definitely would be popular in school. The 'outsider' on the otherhand well.....I agree with the original commenter. Should have used his meaness and they way he goes out of his way to be rude as to why he is so unpopular. Edit: Sorry, not the original commenter but the person you were replying to. Was referring to that conversation though I also agree with the original commenter. They really expect us to believe he had the worst appearance. In the original movie, Rachel was obviously beautiful but based on what was considered in style back then, I get it why Laney's style would be seen as bad by the superficial crowd.
These studios aren't dumb, they know that they can put in the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM and all they have to do is cast some influencer flash in the pan and enough of their fanbase will watch it and they cash the fuck in. They probably also know that there will likely be enough people going to just hate watch it alone.
Something that should also be added to the whole race thing is that the mean girl character (Played by Madison Pettis) is also a woman of color (She's biracial, being half black and half white). I do personally think that out of all the characters that Alden's wardrobe is the best because it does show her as being outlandish and her superficial nature. I would also add that The Great Gatsby costumes were pretty great in my opinion. The actors, specifically Madison Pettis, Tanner Buchanan, Matthew Lillard, Annie Jacob, Myra Molloy, and Peyton Meyer (But BOY did they age him up when he's actually just 22) were all great (Although, Addison Rae was definitely the weakest actor of the cast). As for the rest of the film, I agree with you completely. I ended up watching it because I was visiting family and one of my younger cousins was watching it. It was truly dumb. Why did Madison Pettis have to waste her talents on this crap?
This is what is most laughable about this situation is that they were able to cast the Madison Petty but put her as a side character for someone who doesn't have an ounce of experience in acting. They could've made addison be the mean girl or the best friend so that her first acting experience wouldn't ruin the movie and would give her a chance to learn more from the more talented actors around her
@@bouchrafakher I agree, but imo the problem is that there's a lot of kids (I'm talking about proper kids, not teenagers) that follow these stars and have a hard time distinguishing what's fiction and what is reality. I always see hundreds of comments under movie clips and such asking things like "is this real??? She's mean!!", so since the kids followers are many many not properly followed by adults that can explain things, casting her as the mean girl could hurt her online career. But this is just my view on this.
Imagine if the guy was actually some happy guy, who loves fashion but is always dressed unconventional (like harper from wizards of waverly place). Because of his colourful style everyone sees him as a loser. Then Padget picks him for the bet, they start talking and eventually become friends (JUST FRIENDS). Padget will teach him how to take care of his body and the guy could show her another side of fashion (bc of her followers she would be stressed to dress any different than trendy) but also how to accept truly how you are. And eventually Padget would be the one who get a metamorphosis, in the way how she acts and in the way how she dresses. At the end they are great friends and go second hand shopping.
It may sound dumb but I have to give this movie one thing: seeing a girl like addison rae with a body a little closer to what mine look like felt really good, I am on my 20's and I would love to see this representativity in my teenage years
As much shit as people give to Addison, I like seeing her, she’s a natural beauty. She doesn’t have crazy fillers, or a fake look. I wish I would’ve seen her in my younger years. I would like to see Addison grow honestly
As a teen who wants to be a director and create my own movies when I’m older it almost physically hurts how awful and messy modern teen films are. There have been many good ones but they always get over shadowed by things like these that are obvious money grabs that have no thought put into the plot or characters. Ahhhhhhhhhhh
I don’t understand why it’s so hard to make teen movies that aren’t a remake, aren’t whitewashed, are actors who are played by teens or look like actual teenagers and to dress the actors how teens dress today and not like a 30 yr old also get a director and writer who’s young rather than a 50 yr old white man who hasn’t made movies in 20 years to write a modern teen movie like I’m so fucking done dude I can’t anymore this is why I’m so critical with movies today because they’re all so bad like I’m 16 and no one in basically any teen movie looks or acts or dresses like an actual teen today I’m done.
I'm so sorry but she's LITERALLY only 20. That's only two years older. Like, she looks EXACTLY the same as she did when she was 18. Some of you kids think there's a huge difference between the ages of 17-23 and there's just not when it comes to looks.
@@goobjub708 17-23 isn’t a huge difference wha- I’m talking about how teens today don’t dress like 30 yr olds nor look like they’re in their 20’s which is what Addison looks like and is and no it isn’t a huge difference but seeing as most teenagers and some 20 yr olds do actually look like the average teenager than a 25 yr old like most of the “teenagers” in this film don’t look like your average teenager like that’s mostly because of the clothes they wore in this film like reminds me of 2013-14, also it doesn’t matter her age like there are 30 yr olds who play teenagers in other countries but they look like teens today but she doesn’t like she went to high school 2 years ago and there were different trends and how teens acted then and i know because I went to school with those people also Addison isn’t necessarily a “fashion influence” when it comes to her fashion per say like this isn’t a personal preference like it’s cause if you compare with other big influencers like Emma chamberlain she actually kinda works hard for what she puts together but Addison just puts on whatever that’s expensive or whatever
to be fair when it comes to big western media like hollywood, it's only fairly recently that they actually try to cast older teenagers/early 20s young adults that can still pass as teenagers. even in early 2000s or late 1990s, only a handful of actors playing teenagers were teenagers/not much older than teenagers, and many of them were child star graduates (e.g. lindsay lohan).
Honestly, the original film was pretty bad. There really was no need to remake something silly like She’s All That. It was such a moment in time, but it was a fun teen film and not meant to be Oscar-worthy. Addison Rae making over a unpopular hipster-looking “geek”, it’s been done to death. I would love to see her do a horror film.
well back in the 1990s it was popular storyline. Sure it's cringe now but it's a classic that everyone makes fun of. He's all that was just netflix making trash to get publicity.
Likewise, the original was a cheesy, watchable movie, but it seemed aware of its own silliness. Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook were the best parts of the remake, and they weren't even reprising their original roles.
It wasn't trying to be an Oscar winning hit, sweetie. It was a silly teen movie with a storyline which felt relatable for some at the time. Fun is allowed to exist.
@@faechan849 Why are you calling a stranger "sweetie"? Sounds so condescending. This trope was huge in the 90's and early 2000's, there's no need for it now in 2021, these remakes of old tropes always fail because we are not the same as we were then, times have changed. At least execute it well, but the directors couldn't even do that even though they literally have the blueprint but failed to copy the things that were decent or made sense in the original.
So true, She's All That was subpar even for its time especially since there had been other actually good teen movies around that time with a similar storyline. Instead of rehashing old tropes and trying to 'update' them, it would be better to spend the time and money making something new and relevant (and good).
she’s all that was already very stereotypical but i honestly like it, it is part of the whole comfort/nostalgia coming of age genre around the 00’s that i enjoy, but this remake is simply unwatchable and cringey (in my opinion)
I don’t know why they thought this needed a remake, I recently watched the original and it still holds up. I love the original, it’s one of my favorite movies.
You just made me watch "she's all that " because of this review. The original is really good considering the time it was produced, for a teen movie. Well I mean atleast there's a character development there and a lot relatable. The pressure of following you're parents footstep has taken me and showing how sometimes you just need a person to open up.
The only thing I liked about this movie, besides Matthew Lillard, was Tanner Buchanan, and I'm not saying he was spectacular or anything, and the script wasn't helping, but I believe he has potencial, hopefully he'll recieve more opportunities to grow as an actor, as well as Myra Molloy, who played Quinn✨
funny thing is that all of these actors, besides addison, ARE qualified and have landed amazing roles. 1) The ex boyfriend was a disney channel star. He played a main character, Lucas Friar, on Girl Meets World 2) Tanner Buchanan stars in Cobra Kai as Robby Keene and has landed smaller but fulfilling roles in TV shows
A teen movie that could be interesting to review would be Geek Charming. It's been a while since I last watched it but if my memory serves me right, it was a great version of the "impopular teen and popular teen fall in love with each other" trope.
The thing is with modern teen fashion is that, atleast in my school, there are alot of alt and aesthetic styles. Like it wouldnt be weird to see someone with crazy makeup or a crazy hairdoo to fit whatever look their going for. Theres aton of e-girls/e-boys, cottagecore, etc, aswell as some subgroups like 80s rock glam
the male lead dresses like a pretentious film student with their own podcast and disses any music that isn’t classic rock. nothing wrong with it, just gives me that vibe and as someone who went to school with those kids, i’ve seen it plenty to know
The fact that I never watch these trashy Netflix movies but just came from Dylan is in Trouble reacting to it and now ready for a deep dive analysis from this queen😌✨
Exactly they only make movies for teens/Little kids, I miss the days (that I wasn't even living in) when they made good mature movies which is from 1910s to 1990s, those are really good
@@arisworld6711 i guess bc the original book was a trilogy? idk about the business of filmmaking tbh, but i feel like when it comes to adaptations, esp ones the higher ups think would be easy cash grabs, they seem to be (mostly) committed to adapting the whole original material, even if it ended up being altered big time. the divergent series came to mind, and though it didn't end up being adapted all the way through it was largely bc by mid-2010s YA dystopian wasn't a profitable market anymore. hadn't the hype died down, am sure they would've done allegiant pt. 2.
I really don't want to be a Typical jerk that says horrible things about Addison Rae just because she became famous through unconventional means instead of the typical Hollywood Avenue but her acting was so horrible I couldn't ignore it even though I rarely pay attention to characters acting. The movie honestly brought nothing at all the original was far superior.
90s movies still make me feel warm n nostalgic..even if She's all that wasn't one of the epic teen romances of the 90s it has an unmatched charm to the present one..
it's interesting to me when ppl say stuff like "how can addison rae be in this role she's taking roles from underrated underrepresented hardworking actors" bc that is true to an extent but let's not act like addison rae is the first person to get a spot in the entertainment industry due to nepotism, being rich, being conventionally attractive etc. as opposed to talent
@@LivingTheLifeOfRiley i never said not to talk about it HAHA i just think it's funny how people come for addison rae as if she is the sole perpetrator of this problem when its rly a societal system that enabled it to happen
how much would you bet that there's an intersectionality between bitterness for the lies of meritocracy and some casual misogyny people prolly didn't realise they have in those ... uh, "criticisms." 👁️👁️ not saying people wouldn't have clowned on the protagonist actor if he was a male tiktoker but like ... as per usual, when it's a woman the disdain seems to be more vocalised.
Even though I have never watched she’s all that (sadly) I believe it didn’t need a remake at all. Still more watchable than the kissing booth franchise.
Agree. This remake was useless, 'She’s All That' is a classic film. They only remake of this movie I respect is 'Not Another Teen Movie'(but it’s gotten popular enough to be considered it’s own movie, instead of a remake). But I bet since this film got a lot of views because of Addison (I honestly didn’t watch it BECAUSE of Addison, it just seems tiktokers are riding off they’re fame, trying to be still relevant), then in the future, they will be remaking other teen classics, like 'She's The Man' or '10 Things I Hate About You'.
@@wintercombat I heard a rumor they are already remaking 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', even tho it’s a horror, I count it as a teen classic since so many 90s stars are in it..
No!! NO NO NO DO NOT TOUCH 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU the series didn't even work!! And no one can surpass Julia Stiles specially that poem scene no one has teh right to touch it!!
I have to say, I understand your point about nostalgia probably making "she's all that" look better in people's eyes than it really did. However, I have to say that I, having never watched she's all that as a kid/teenager, recently watched it for the first time and still immensely enjoyed it. Yes, it's filled with overused tropes and such, but somehow the characters still have heart, even if they're supposed to be walking stereotypes. No character (well, maybe beside Taylor) felt like a cardboard cutout to me - it was genuinely enjoyable to watch them, they felt human. "She's all that", despite a pretty shallow-sounding premise, somehow felt more multifaceted to me than a few movies with a claim to depth that i've watched recently. but ofc thats just a personal opinion
IMO "Never Been Kissed" with Drew Barrymore is so underrated compared to this movie and remake. I really hope that if they ever decide to remake NBK that they do it right :(! Also I like the plotline of that movie more, since she's already a great person but has to go into the past by pretending to be a teen to realize her worth.
At one point love don't cost a thing was my go to movie when i needed something to watch! Tha acting , the characters , the fashion , the comedy it never gets old !
1. I'm so disappointed that everyone noticed Matthew Lillard from the OG but not Rachael Leigh Cook... who played Laney in the first movie. (she plays the mom) 2. I have a hard time with believing this is more diverse than the OG. Because i dont think it is. I have this feeling about most movies/shows these days. "Diverse" today means mixed POC (usually black characters) swapped out for what used to be dark skinned, unambiguously black characters. All the LGBT+ characters are still background noise to appease the community. And they add a brown character and/or Asian character (also background) and call it diversity. Its the same issue, with a different face. There are about 100 other ways to remake this movie with a REAL diverse cast and make it so much better.
Exactly. In the original we had Gabrielle union, lil kim who were darker skinned unambiguous black women. How they managed to end up with less diversity nowadays is beyond me
@@bryanna_renaee it happens every time. Hiring a biracial person (usually a woman) is such a step back from having 3 unambiguous black characters in the 1st movie. They sub out black characters for other POC... instead of just hiring less white people lol.
"When he and Padgett do finally reconcile, it's hardly satisfying because he does absolutely nothing except wait outside of the prom for her with a horse." Maybe the meta-genius(?) of the movie is the way the entire thing embodies the low, subterranean bar we see in the romantic and online connections of today. But seriously, thanks for this great critique! You brought up some points I would never have thought about.
I agree with everything else but Addison wasn’t the best pick for this 😭 she gave a mediocre performance and was surrounded by amazing actors as to seem like her acting wasn’t “that bad”
Yeah she needs to take lessons. If she wants to become an actual actress and a good one, she needs to put in the work. Being a famous tik tok star isn't gonna carry her very long if she is serious about it.
I feel like the (mostly) better actors just made her acting look worse in comparison though. Obviously I do not include kourtney kardashian in this analysis

Yea
tbh, to me it came off as her just insulting laney lol
ok, but Laney was amazing before this fckn makeover and all they were trying to do is make her look more basic and erase her individuality. any other female artist in reality would prbably punch you in the face if you touch her things or clothing.😅

Even with all these things, it's still a bland, unfortunate film.

i hate movies like this because the whole point of Pygmalion (that this trope is largely based on) is that the person who is made over DOESNT END UP with the person who makes them over. they grow past them and realize they can have value on their own even tho the other character “made them.” if this movie had ended with the guy thriving (not with Addison Rae) it would’ve been so much better.

@@enoyna9495 No one is hating on her. Just on her acting and the privilege she is getting. Also, it takes a narcissist to think that they are actors and can skip steps to get roles just because they have social media followers. I just wish more directors would start listening to the target audience instead of thinking this is trash we would like.
i think the only reason why tatbilb is good because its based on a book.
Another good teen movie of recent would be The Half of It. It uses the trope of soulmates really well and feels so much more mature than movies like He’s all that and so on.
Booksmart is also a good recent teen movie
I think teen romcoms from the 80s-2000s were also better because, excluding nostalgia, everything felt very genuine and realistic. Even Clueless, which had a popular girl as the main character, made her likable and relatable to an extent. He’s All That, Kissing Booth and After all feel disconnected from reality while also trying too hard to make the characters relatable.
Horrible film. Tried to be a ‘hardcore party’ film without ever taking the full plunge. Safe, basic & unmemorable. Two main chatacters weren’t funny.
The original film actually had more diversity. Notice how in the remake, everybody is light skinned, even the characters of African descent.
Netflix is being lazy and for as much money as they make it's pathetic how they're cutting corners like this
Also recently about the met gala guest list debuts tiktok stars and influencers but said it's just a rumor and not finalized yet from what I heard
Hopefully this trend end fast after this movie, but I doubt it unfortunately.
@@muunprince1992 I heard about that too! With the Gala previously inviting MUAs and other TH-camrs I'm not surprised they'd invite Tiktokers now but I'm still disappointed like I don't want to sound too elitist but what ever happened to prestige?
Nope Attaway General was a travesty that not even Hes all that could fight it.
Right! Thank you for saying it. There’s a sociological aspect to popularity that isn’t just clothes makeup and hair alone.
This is such a good take!

" The kids who want to grow up so badly and think that being a teenager is filled with parties, good hair, skin (even though they tried to say all teens deal with breakouts) I genuinely thought that being a teenager was really all the hype until I became one."
I've heard that so many times on comment threads for teen movies!
Besides I’m calling it right now, Everyone is talking smack about the 2010s fashion and how ridiculous we looked. But how the fashion cycle is going… A lot of what Addison is wearing is probably what a lot of people are going to want to wear pretty soon. If they wanted to make the boys look like your everyday highschooler, they should have dressed them like a highlighter. With a focus on shoes. A lot of shoes
Girls wear baggy jeans with baguets and maybe an over sized tee or a cute cropped top and some crocs or vans or 1s.
@@arisworld6711 yeah. Cropped and tight shirts with floral patterns or plain blocks of color are really in right now
that trend followed me from middle school to high school, at least you would never run into them because they were dressed as human highlighters. could see them from a mile away
thought the same with Addison’s acting.
No actually the wiki page says Rachel Leigh Cook returns as Anna Sawyer, a completely different role from her character in She's All That.
i saw the title and literally screamed “YES". i love the original and it’s not even that old enough for a remake
I mean it did come out 22 years ago, but I agree it did not need a remake

Huh, old movies don't need remakes
I love that show!
Yes!! I was so pleasantly surprised when they introduced that storyline, I kept thinking how amazing they would be together and wanting them to kiss and then they did!!! Adrianna's girl group phase when she realises she's bi and has a bunch of new female friends is my absolute favourite bit of the show, shame it doesn't last that long :(
Low key, the movie would have been a thousand times better if they had centered the plot around the sapphic relationship lol
what tf are you talking about
I liked your commentary. I feel like the DCOM movie Geek Charming did a better job with their storyline and characters using this trope (popular girl and outcast boy) It wasn’t perfect, but for a lower budget made for TV movie the clothing, acting, and writing are superbly better👌
this is the comment I was looking for
Couldn’t agree more. Dylan was a much more dimensional character with better clothes.
LITERALLYYY this was the movie he’s all that was trying to be, sure it wasn’t a masterpiece but it did this exact concept TEN times better
Completely forgot about this movie! It was a good one
LOL, it was definetly neutered down but for a DCOM it did what it need to do! i loved the book too much to properly like it tho.
I think some of it is where the character being based on Addison's style comes in. She's like """"older"""" fits like y2k, late 90s, early 10s styles
Lately american media got thinking "Are these series and movies getting worse by the day or am I just getting too old for this?" and honestly I can't find a satisfaying answer. i would actually have liked that the reason he's unpopular is mainly because he is mean, and not his appearance.

Edit: Sorry, not the original commenter but the person you were replying to. Was referring to that conversation though I also agree with the original commenter. They really expect us to believe he had the worst appearance. These studios aren't dumb, they know that they can put in the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM and all they have to do is cast some influencer flash in the pan and enough of their fanbase will watch it and they cash the fuck in.

The fact that they dressed her like an old librarian is just...😫😬
Indeed, the filmmakers obviously have no clue how real teenagers dress nowadays.
Exactly, it is easy for her to look good because she is beautiful and she has a beautiful body, but they could have chosen better outfits

The only thing I liked about this movie, besides Matthew Lillard, was Tanner Buchanan, and I'm not saying he was spectacular or anything, and the script wasn't helping, but I believe he has potencial, hopefully he'll recieve more opportunities to grow as an actor, as well as Myra Molloy, who played Quinn✨

it's interesting to me when ppl say stuff like "how can addison rae be in this role she's taking roles from underrated underrepresented hardworking actors" bc that is true to an extent but let's not act like addison rae is the first person to get a spot in the entertainment industry due to nepotism, being rich, being conventionally attractive etc. as opposed to talent
So why should we not talk about it? Let's keep complaining and maybe something will change.
@@LivingTheLifeOfRiley i never said not to talk about it HAHA i just think it's funny how people come for addison rae as if she is the sole perpetrator of this problem when its rly a societal system that enabled it to happen
how much would you bet that there's an intersectionality between bitterness for the lies of meritocracy and some casual misogyny people prolly didn't realise they have in those ... uh, "criticisms." 👁️👁️
not saying people wouldn't have clowned on the protagonist actor if he was a male tiktoker but like ... as per usual, when it's a woman the disdain seems to be more vocalised.
But I bet since this film got a lot of views because of Addison (I honestly didn’t watch it BECAUSE of Addison, it just seems tiktokers are riding off they’re fame, trying to be still relevant), then in the future, they will be remaking other teen classics, like 'She's The Man' or '10 Things I Hate About You'.
i hope they don’t touch those movies, if they do i pray they actually do it justice 🤧
imo i think a lot of people watch it to make fun of it
@@wintercombat I heard a rumor they are already remaking 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', even tho it’s a horror, I count it as a teen classic since so many 90s stars are in it..
No!! NO NO NO DO NOT TOUCH 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU the series didn't even work!! And no one can surpass Julia Stiles specially that poem scene no one has teh right to touch it!!
they shall never touch 10 things. respect heath ledger’s iconic performance and leave it alone
I love how effortlessly you're throwing shade at anything or anyone.
Also I like the plotline of that movie more, since she's already a great person but has to go into the past by pretending to be a teen to realize her worth.
except for the fact that a teacher falls for her as a “student,” and when they realize shes not a student, he gets pissed? that was so weird
@@ke6279 wow I really don't remember this movie like I thought I did.
@@ke6279 haha yes that was weird! I didn’t like the main dude she was with
Please, please don't give them ideas of remaking someting else! O_O
I’m so glad you mentioned love don’t cost a thing it’s so underrated and needs to be talked about more
At one point love don't cost a thing was my go to movie when i needed something to watch! Tha acting , the characters , the fashion , the comedy it never gets old !
1. I'm so disappointed that everyone noticed Matthew Lillard from the OG but not Rachael Leigh Cook... who played Laney in the first movie. (she plays the mom)
SAME!!!!!
The amount of reviews that don't mention Rachel Leigh Cook is my villain origin story
Why would a guy allow a girl to shave his stubbles with an EPILATOR?! Is this a done thing?!
Anna Paquin had won an Oscar by the time this came out- idk if I’d group her into the “performing lacking category”
@@aspannas it was the same for reality-tv stars who tried acting. Julianne Hough, anyone? Decades ago, it was models who got into acting with mixed success.
How the teenagers looked in this movie is how adults think teens today looked. They should've take outfit inspo from something like Euphoria thb.
It would have been an INCREDIBLE twist to have the character arc actually be Cameron’s.
as SOON as I saw Paget’s first outfit, I knew we would need a ModernGurlz vid.
