In the beginning she saw Blackthorne as nothing more than a barbarian, a savage from other lands with whom she had nothing in common with. 10 episodes later she sees him as not just a friend, but respects him as a good man. This is beautiful writing and character development at its finest !

It was after the earthquake when John sat next to her and held her hand after she was injured. She looks into his eyes and sees he has genuinely cares about her. She knew for that moment that he had a kind heart.
Also the fact he didn’t try and “pillow” with her. They respected each other.

I've been a fan of the novel for 20 years, and I think this is a rare instance where a TV show making changes to the source material actually improves the story. Same with how they handled Blackthorne's suicide attempt. It actually makes more sense the way the show handled it. It's a really incredible show in that regard. So much care and thought put into every scene.

The absence of Mariko was so poignantly felt throughout the episode. It reminded me of when Kiku said, "Presence is felt most keenly through absence", about the teapot, several episodes earlier. So much loss, so much destruction... and so much of it caused by the greed and malice of others. It truly speaks to the juxtaposition of the "Pointless Death"... All at once, pointless; and yet, more meaningful than any living soul could truly understand.
That Fuji then comforted Blackthorne, someone who she originally despised and looked down on, by giving him the advice she had received at the very start of the season, as she was forced to give up her infant.... all the more powerful.

Her son and husband would have died even if Blackthorne never arrived and Blackthorne would not have made strides to learn about his surroundings if it wasn't for her patience and sense of purpose as a consort. If he had never washed up in Japan, her life wouldn't have had a purpose after their death. He probably needed her presence in his life even more than Mariko (though his desire was for Mariko). Literally two people that needed each others support to survive. They each gave the other a meaning to endure and triumph in some way
