I was born in 68, so I was raised on MJ. I remember as a kid him with the Jackson 5. I personally always felt sorry for him. He didn't have a childhood. He paid a high price for his fame.
👏👋🎶‼️So Michael and Janet grew up loving old time classic movies and Smooth Criminal was based on a 1930 Fred Astaire (renowned dancer) movie called The Band Wagon. This 9 minute video was taken from Michael's full length movie called "Moonwalker" in 1988. As far as Annie Are You Okay lyrics was inspired from taking a CPR class and the dummy's name was Annie and the first thing you do is shake the victim and ask Are You Okay. Like getting a speeding ticket one time inspired Michael to create the Speed Demon video which is crazy good. The famous lean (yes performed live at concerts) is enabled by pegs in the floor that holes in the heels of their shoes locked onto which was an invention Michael's. It still requires core strength to pull it off and when you look closely (especially live) you can see them detach from the pegs and continue. His mother said when Michael was still a toddler in diapers she would see him moving and rocking out to the rhythm of the agitator washing machine in the laundry room🎶. When he dances it looks like he has no bones and he just ripples and grooves with such complete control over every muscle in his body. He only ever chose the most talented dancers, musicians, and more to work with him. I always thought being a Michael Jackson back up dancer would be the best and worst job there is. The best cuz you were chosen and get to work with him but the worst cuz how do you take your eyes off magical Michael? Who sees the other dancers? They all loved him truly and had a blast. You should check out the Jackson 5 with a young 11 year old Michael on the Ed Sullivan show. They did 3 songs but if you only have time for one of the songs chose Who's Loving You (a Smokey Robinson song). You will not believe your eyes or ears.💯‼️🎶. Thanks for bringing this today! You really need to take a deeper dive into this one in a lifetime dedicated, talented, and multi layered talent.
You should do a deep dive into the dance world of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and the Nicholas Brothers. You’ll discover where many of MJ's dance moves originated from. Jackson was talented, no doubt but he borrowed many moves from as far back as the 20's. He also took much of the fashion from yesteryear. There's actually a vid on TH-cam of Astaire dancing to Smooth Criminal.
I believe MJ held a patent on a anchor pin mechanism that would pop up from the floor and latch onto a special hook in the heel of the dancer’s shoes allowing them to defy gravity and lean. Amazing!
Michael Jackson wore a blue band on his suit sleeve here as homage to Fred Astaire in a similar scene in the 1953 movie, The Band Wagon. There is a video somewhere showing both scenes side by side. It's amazing. But if you just watch Astaire's by itself you'll see the similarity. Michael Jackson admired Mr Astaire's dancing.
During the late 60s, when Michael was around 9 or 10, his dancing style was mostly influenced by Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Jackie Wilson, and James Brown. There is a video clip (on TH-cam) of Michael when he was 10 dancing to James Brown. MJ was born in '58, and I was born in '59. J5fan4life 💃🕺
Oh yeah I remember hearing about those influences for him. It’s still so cool though because it’s not like he took dancing lessons (to the best of my knowledge) or really was taught by any of them, it’s just a self taught trial and error art that no one did/will do better. ❤
Every time I see this video I get goosebumps. There never has been, nor will there ever again be anyone like MJ. His passing was such a terrible loss for us all.
I'm proud to say my 14 year old daughter loves MJ and considers him the best dancer and musician in history. I'm 45 so I know MJ but it's nice to see younger generations appreciate his art! He is a legend and deserves new people experiencing him! She loves his Thriller dance, especially since she works in a haunted house every Halloween and they play the video for the audience while waiting to go in
He is the G.O.A.T. Incredible song and video. MJ always knew how to make a song and video. He is still the most popular artist in the world today. That slow part where it got dark and a little weird was a mourning for Annie dying.
Sir Micheal, choreographed his own dance moves. He's a natural. Dance moves and his song lyrics would come to him in his dreams. 69 baby here, grew up watching Micheal. Definitely the King of Pop and dance.
It was often said by many of the choreographers that worked with him that he had an AMAZING natural ability to move his body EXACTLY how he needed to in performing those dance routines. Professional dancers would spend HOURS working on learning a routine and it was said that Michael would show up and see it performed and be able to near perfectly copy those in moments. He'd been performing on stage his whole life, so having a "stage presence" ... knowing how to keep the spotlight on himself and commanding an audience was ingrained into him from a very early age. His videos were unique in the time because he would make these "mini-movies" which centered around his song ... and he wasn't afraid to spend a LOT of moments "setting up" the next scene or sequence. Other artists JUST did the song ... that was it. No set-up... no story... just perform the song and end the video. Michael also knew that M-TV and other music video stations didn't always like airing his videos because of their length... it would take up a lot more air-time... they could play ONE Michael Jackson video or three regular videos between commercial breaks. But it was Michael Jackson ... so they aired MJ's video
It was a series of videos with a story that tied them together. Sean Lennon, John Lennon’s son with Yoko Ono, was one of the kids. Joe Pesci was in one of them too
And yes, they did that lean thing on stage too, there is a special heel on shoe and a "nail" out on floor where heel fits to support. No cables, just talent and pure power with coordination to hold your body straight with lean and getting back from it. Many of his moves were done earlier a bit differently by old stars like Harold Loyd and Charlie Chaplin (to name couple known for starters) and he perfected those moves to a smooth dance act with great music.
I grew up on Mj. My mom was such a huge fan. I still have an unopened never been touched by a needle Thriller on Vinyl, the one with him and the Tiger on one side, and a couple of his Singles from Bad on 45's. I remember her buying brand new VHS tapes to record the entire American Dream series and the big CD collection she bought me for Christmas that was released with the Dangerous Album. I loved him.
MJ THE most creative entertainer of his time. Im 62 and still enjoy to watch his videos and listen to his songs. Thanks for bringing me back into a good mood. Just love Michael Jackson.
Unfortunately in the latter part of his carreer some influenced him into a more political statement. This was never him. He was and I still believe today that MJ was just an entertainer. A croud pleaser. Some used him as a political sound board. Fuck these idiots. I am and always be a fan of Michael Jackson. RIP MJ
Omg BP this music video was the most amazing MV out there at the time. It’s so clever how all the little things in the background, playing cards, having a punch up it was amazing. Loved revisiting it. Also making my son watch it and pointing out all the odd bits and his face was blank 😂😂. Anyway I enjoyed this thanks mate xx ❤✌🏻
I am 78 and I have followed Mike from the time he was 6 or8.....There will never be another Mike Jackson for sheer creativity and will to perform. " Remember The Time" will absolutely astound you too! So glitzy and polished. Please. Treat yourself.
This video was BIG in the 80's. Check out the lyrics. Annie was killed in her bedroom. The "Annie are you okay?" line is from the people who were looking for her. Unfortunately, she met her doom. MJ was WAAAAY before his time. Young Janet even had him help her with the choreography on her Pleasure Principle track. The infamous one of her doing the back flip off a trunk or speaker case. Talented young people in the Jackson Family!!!
So, the lean thing... he actually patented the special shoes to do it. there was a small cleat on the floor that he locks one show into, and allows him to lean that far... I don't think it'd be easy, even with that, but man, such a cool effect. Poor Michael Jackson. He brought some of the best and influential music of a generation, but so much strife and drama. Family issues, all of that stuff. just never had a "real" life. But, you could say Elvis had it almost as bad. just misunderstood geniuses. As for this video, it's part of a larger work, called Moonwalker. There's a whole overarching storyline. It's...interesting. Would love more MJ, but man, you always kill it with your reactions! keep it up, BP!
There were MJ vs Prince debates during the 1st half of the 80s, but I think it's safe to say that the former rose to another level during the 2nd half of the decade.
The "lean" was an amazing feat of strength and agility, more than it seems. It was done with special shoes and metal pegs installed in the dance floor. The amazing aspect of this is the sheer strain it puts on the ankles, the calf muscles and lower leg joints requires almost super-human level of ability. There are a lot of videos on YT that show exactly how it was done and how easily you could injury yourself doing it.
I never thought M J was guilty. Now I know he was the Pawn in their game! MJ was a beautiful talented soul!! He doesn't get the praise he deserves.🙏🏼 G.O.A.T!!! R.I.P
Not whatever. That is actually accurate. The inspiration was from the Annie CPR doll. That is how brilliant Michael was. The most mundane situation can inspire greatness.
The lean trick was done with a special shoe design that would temporarily attach him to the stage. It still took incredible upper body strength to remain straight during the lean and bring himself back up. There were no cables involved.
Being born in 1960, I grew up with Michael Jackson. I always loved this video because it was inspired by "The Girl Hunt Ballet" which is part of the classic film "The Bandwagon". The film came out in 1953 and starred Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Fred Astaire had a 76 year career on stage, film, and television as a dancer, actor, singer, choreographer, musician, and presenter. Cyd Charisse was an actress and dancer. Astaire called Cyd Charisse “beautiful dynamite” adding that “when you’ve danced with her you stay danced with.” Besides having incredible natural talent, Michael was inspired by many of the great entertainers and dancers like Fred Astaire, The Nicholas Brothers, Gene Kelly, Elvis, Sammy Davis, Jr, Bob Fosse, James Brown, and many others. He pulls different moves from different people and puts it all together in his own incredible style. I believe he also took classes with The Nicholas Brothers. So sad that we lost him way too soon. RIP Michael.
Yes i saw him live dangerous tour 1992 and history tour 1996 and yes he do that thing with spike in his shoes.....you can see how he do it on yourube tutorial.. He was before the internet, social media, telephones and it was magic..... He mix james brown, fred astaire, streetdance poplocking to his own flavour....and he was the first on MTV so recognized.....
Even for people who have seen this countless times: Go and watch all of the drama "blocking" and how MJ is constantly on the move doing something. It could be touching his hat to different dance moves and everything in between. This is truly an amazing work of art. One of the best MTV videos ever made.
I was 10-11 back in 87, when this came out. Still one of my favorite beats in any song. Period. His dancing has always been crazy. It reminds me of getting a masters level, and then you watch MJ-level, and realise that you actually just started.
MJ could move every body part separately, together, smooth, or disjointed. He floated across the stage and smashed everything that had come before him. He's a Legend
Try looking at things from earlier years like watching Sammy Davis Jr. or Fred Astaire who was definitely an influence on MJ. Gene Kelly is in there too. He obviously studied the greats. “An American In Paris” is obviously a part of this. Imagery and fantasy is all over the place.
Absolutely. Michael respected The Greats, studied them and let them inspire him to find his own style. And in turn he joined them as one of the true masters of dance and music. As much as I love reaction videos of young people discovering older artist. It is actually infuriating to listen to current artists who have zero clue who the old masters are. Sure, they'll sample their music but actually study them and what made them great, nope.
@@dixie31623 I think we the older generation have failed to promote the pioneers of the music and dance industry. Nobody talks about them and what they did anymore. We dropped the ball there and we have all this technology to do it with now.
MJ was such a showman. His music was top notch and his dancing supreme. And yes, he revolutionized music entertainment. His music videos were pure gold. Not a single bad music video. No one does music entertainment better still to this day. Bravo to Michael Jackson's career. This man was on the stage entertaining the world since he was maybe 5.
I love Michael Jackson... And saying that is an understatement and this track is absolute fire. Hail Michael. ❤ ❤ ❤ maybe we'll see ya in the resurrection MJ.. LETS HOPE.
I love MJ , he actually invented this peg that pops up out of the floor and the shoes would have a way to attach to this peg and it would give them all the ability to lean the way they do without falling over . MJ even had a patent for his dance invention .
James Brown was his idol, which led to him emulating his dance moves and creating many of his own. Even the moonwalk wasn't his invention, but he perfected it. I've been a huge fan since 1976, dancing at 5 years old to the beats of J-5's 'Skywriter', 'Dancing Machine', 'Ben', and 'Who's Loving You' - just a few hits from the 60's and '70s. When he began his solo career, he changed everything, not just with his music. He paved the way for black artists on MTV and was the first to create mini-movies for music videos. He will be remembered for years to come, alongside Elvis Presley, James Brown, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Jones, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Mercury and many other great music artists.
MJ is a legend, there will never be another like him.
amen!
Very true 🤧

Michael Jackson didn't make music videos, he made epic musical experiences that couldn't be denied.
I believe MJ held a patent on a anchor pin mechanism that would pop up from the floor and latch onto a special hook in the heel of the dancer’s shoes allowing them to defy gravity and lean. Amazing!
Indeed he did. I found the patent and design specs online years ago.
You still had to have incredible core strength!
US Patent US5255452
Application filed in june 1992, granted in october 1993
yup who created that illusion was David Copperfield , Michael J asked him for help to make that illusion and he made it happen
@@ginnys9831 I agree, your leg and core strength would have to be out of this world to be able to go that far forward out of balance.
MJ hardcore studied Gene Kelly, Fred Astair, and Bob Fosse...3 of the greatest dancers/choreographers to live.
Can add the Nicholas brothers to the mix as well.
Add Nicholas Brothers and James Brown and Jackie Wilson

Michael Jackson revolutionized music and music videos!!
The music video is actually from a whole movie called Moonwalker which is awesome
That's the name! I'm sitting here trying to think of it. Haven't seen it since I was a kid.

No one can even come close to Michaels talent!!❤ loved your reaction🎉
Definitely a legend! Everything he did is legendary, starting with Beat It, Thriller . Nothing he does is simple or bland, all fire!!🔥
When Moonwalker was released it was a national event. 88 I think. Damn I'm old. MJ is the Goat.
Even for people who have seen this countless times: Go and watch all of the drama "blocking" and how MJ is constantly on the move doing something. It could be touching his hat to different dance moves and everything in between. This is truly an amazing work of art. One of the best MTV videos ever made.
There’s a behind the scenes or making of video? 🤔
I was 10-11 back in 87, when this came out. Still one of my favorite beats in any song. Period.
His dancing has always been crazy. It reminds me of getting a masters level, and then you watch MJ-level, and realise that you actually just started.
He had a platform and special shoes no strings on that lean move.
The spin and glass breaking was in a commercial, I think for Pepsi. The kid who danced also did another commercial with him
I think the non first time reactions are great! Especially when you do iconic and classic songs like this!!
MJ could move every body part separately, together, smooth, or disjointed. He floated across the stage and smashed everything that had come before him. He's a Legend
Michael Jackson was my first Huge concert!
Definitely 1 of the most talented, innovated performers of all time❣️❣️❣️
The refrain always gives me chills when he hits those high notes
Facts
I love Michael Jackson... And saying that is an understatement and this track is absolute fire. Hail Michael. ❤ ❤ ❤ maybe we'll see ya in the resurrection MJ.. LETS HOPE.
This is my favourite music video of all time. Total and utter perfection.
This is actually a scene form MOONWALKER the MJ movie!!! The soundtrack from it is a work of art!!!
My favorite MJ song. Amazing to watch
Every dance move or walk has meaning. Awesome
Michael jackson took dancing and videos to a different level
The greatest entertainer of all time
I so miss those days. Beautiful performance.
MJ is the class with the greatest dance Fred Astaire
I remember seeing this on MTV and being blown away. The choreography was absolutely insane!
