      Yeah, that was originally about the Velvets, who were the quintessential underground band before they did Loaded. I know that Bowie was trying to compliment the Pixies by comparing them but I don't think it's apt. Pixies gained both fans and influence faster than the Velvs did.

    Yes, do more Pixies! "Gouge Away" is definitely an abbreviated, best-ever musical retelling of the Bible's story of Samson and Delilah ( _Judges_ chapter 16). Try "Tenement Song", "Silver Bullet", "Head Carrier", "Brick Is Red".

    The Pixies are one of my favorite bands. Most of their songs follow the pattern of soft hard soft. The lead singer has some solo albums out either as Frank Black or Frank Black and the Catholics. The bass player's sister has a good band called The Breeders. Their most well-known song is "Cannon Ball". My favorite Pixies songs are "Monkey Gone to Heaven", "Motorway to Roswell" (about the UFO crash in Roswell,NM), and "Eiffel Tower". Definitely play these songs!

    Nice choice! This looks like a recent performance since Black Francis (the singer) looks middle aged. It's not bad at all, but his voice is not what it used to be (no disrespect). I suggest reacting to the studio versions or live version from the 80s/early 90s to hear them at their best. Maybe "Gigantic" (which was sung by their bassist, Kim Deal) or "Debaser." Speaking of Kim Deal, try reacting to her band The Breeders. Their songs "Cannonball" or "Divine Hammer" or "Do You Love Me Now" would be good places to start. They were more pop, but still plenty weird (in a good way.)

  • @WitlessSod
    @WitlessSod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The lyrics to the song are a retelling of the Samson and Delilah biblical story. Samson was a mighty Israelite whom the Romans feared in combat. To subdue him, they had Delilah seduce him and find out the source of his strength. She finds that his hair is the source of his strength and cuts it in his sleep. The Romans then swarm in and subdue him. They blind him bu gouging his eyes out. They turn him into a slave where he is forced to serve the Romans in the great temple. His hair grows back. In the middle of a party, he places himself between the two central pillars holding up the temple. He uses his re-found strength to break the pillars and kill himself and all the other party guests.

    I was lucky enough to see the Pixies in 1988. I almost didn't go, because I was so poor, but by chance encountered Frank Black's (the singer's) brother and a friend looking for the place on the way, took them there, so Kim Deal took me in for nothing. Nice. This song is such a subtle, simple, but monstrous builder, and such a story of humanity, destroyed but kind of redeemed in resistance, underneath it.

    The Pixies created a sound that became popularized in the early 90's and had no name until a music reported called it Grunge, famously about the band Nirvana. The Pixies in fact created this new sounds that had influenced, perhaps in part was even copied by, the Grunge bands that would come during the Grunge wave, including Nirvana, whose singer Kurt Cobain had admitted, being a giant Pixies fan, that he was trying to copy them.

    Gouge away is based on the biblical story of Samson. He had herculean strength. The people plotted how to kill him. He married a woman that was loyal to the Philistines. She plotted with them to ensnare Samson. But by reason of his superhuman strength, they could never best him. So they convinced his wife to persuade Samson to betray his secret. The truth was , his strength came from being a Nazarite, never to drink Alcohol or to cut his hair. He told his wife after several attempts to betray him, what the secret to his strength was. His 7 locks of hair. When his wife found out the secret, she waited until Samson fell asleep and cut his hair off. He lost all his powers. His enemies captured him and gouged out his eyes, then chained him to the two main pillars holding uo the entire building. He prayed to God to give him the strength, one last time, to destroy his enemies, then he collapsed the pillars and killed several thousand people who were gathered inside the building.
    Epic story.

    If you're a student of music - you should listen to Doolittle in its entirety (a couple of times). They have influenced so many musicians that you wouldn't believe. I remember hearing that the Breeder's Last Splash (Kim Deal's band) sold more copies than all of the Pixies albums combined but if you ask anyone who influenced alternative music in the 90's, the Pixies is a hard one to beat.

    Black Francis (singer and songwriter) starts by referring to an even when he was a child and a religious person at his church tried to molest him. Then he shifts into the story of Samson from the Bible. The anger and hatred translates from one story to the other. This is an extremely visceral song and although you can "analyze" it it really is meant to be felt. And when I listen to it I feel it deep.

    Chuck Norris listened to the pixies, whilst the song is about Samson and Delilah I also believe there is a slight reference to heroin because gouging is what you do after you have banged up but I’m not 100% sure about that awesome song I have probably listened to it hundreds of times
