    Pixies are Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Weezer’s biggest influence. A lot of bands were influenced by them. Pixies were the pre cursor of what was to come in 90s and early 2000’s alternative rock and grunge. Pixies were way ahead of their time. Kurt Cobain even said that they were trying to copy them

    The best thing about alternative-i.e. not commercial music-is that it expands the listener’s musical arcs. The Pixies musical painted on canvasses of odd shapes and sizes to make unique art. Unique gets noticed and is built upon hence the endless list of artists the Pixies have influenced. Thank you for doing this reaction!

  • @thefullnomad6543

    Pixies, THERE is a rabbithole for you! Everything is totally different for them. They are all over the place. The music is killlllllllller. They're in the rare air of bands like Pink Floyd -- there's just no one like them and they are so inspirational for so many musicians because they broke so many molds. Genres like lo-gi, grunge, grunge-rock, garage rock, alternative, new wave -- the Pixies are considered seminal to them all. You create a pyramid of bands that influenced the most musicians, and the Pixies are gonna be up at the top, above REM, above Nirvana, above so many others that came in the '90s and thereafter.
    Just a few to dabble in:
    LEVITATE ME
    WAVE OF MUTILATION
    WHERE IS MY MIND
    DEBASER
    MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN
    ...and countless others. Probably one of the most influential bands ever. Really.

    Pixies is probably the most influential alternative bands. When asked about “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Kurt Cobain said “I was just trying to rip off the Pixies”. He wasn’t joking. If you listen to the Pixies song “Debaser” you can hear the guitar riff from Smells Like Teen Spirit all the way through the song.

  • @Gekokujo76
    @Gekokujo76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    As others have stated, Pixies influenced a ton of the greatest bands. I listened to them growing up, but never really could get into them much. Frank Black's voice was a little much for me to get past even when I dug the music. Then I got into Modest Mouse at the beginning of 2000 and it opened up the door to a ton of new (for me) bands like Pixies, Built To Spill, and Califone. I would suggest Gouge Away, Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), UMass, or Monkey Gone To Heaven (since I know you've already done "Where Is My Mind").

    • @RisforRockit
      @RisforRockit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But, it's also interesting to look at what and who influenced the Pixies sound. First time I heard the Gun Club, I thought, now this sounds vaguely familiar. Frank Black must have heard Hüsker Dü and Bad Brains too.

    • @Gekokujo76
      @Gekokujo76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RisforRockit If you open up that bag of cats, you start to question what Bad Brains' influence was over music, and you never come back from that black hole/epiphany. Gun Club was a HUGE influence on "The Seattle Sound" and was Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees and so much more...RIP) favorite band (album?). Husker Du started ALL OF this Pixies/Modest Mouse stuff, and I give them "Rush Respect" (I dont love the band, but I respect the band's obvious greatness and place in music history) for that all day. That's just Frank Black though. Now do the influences of the rest of the band. They are ALL OVER THE MAP. They all come together in this weird soup that is either strangely delicious, or just off enough that I dont want a whole bowl of it. Totally unique and I would understand anybody else obsessing over the band or totally not being able to get into it. MASTERS of doing it their own way, while also pioneering a sound that would pop up in many genres in many ways...launching 1000 Indie Rock ships in the process. Kim Deal, as a bassist, songwriter, and back-up singer, should probably have a statue up somewhere. It blows my mind that she isnt celebrated as a Patron Saint in these "identity driven" times, because she's worthy of every bit of praise one could throw on her.

    Pixies redeemed the 80's, music bloomed into Grunge and pop-punk from here, the guy with the top comment mentioned, a few (British) bands were influenced to form bands by attending Pixies concert I know that at least two members of Blur went to the first night and secured tickets for the next night. Different guys from Radiohead may have attended both, I can't remember and can't be bothered googling it! Special mention to Husker Du for sparking the Pixies idea in Charles and Joey's minds!

    the way you reacted to the way their songs changed, the structure, is the reason the Pixies became the most influential band for ALL band that cane after them. U2, Nirvana, Foo FIghters, etc etc etc . they change the game. literally threw away the set structure of a song and create their own. cake wouldn't exist without the pixies.

      @@JT-ne8du Gigantic is an embarrassment as far as the lyrics go, from the point of view of a person whose white friend has a black boyfriend but in true Pixies fashion the musical sum of it's parts is greater and saved the day when it came out; wouldn't fly now though.

    Brad has a great ear. Pixies are wonderful in the same way Cake is. Odd, great bass, and funky. Love both bands. Pixies were so ahead of their time, they would fit perfectly in the mid 90s.

      Velvet Underground? The Stooges? Television? Sonic Youth? Husker Du? The Replacements? The Clash? Roxy Music? Janes Addiction? Faith No More? I love the Pixies, probably more than any of those bands previously mentioned but they are not directly responsible for alternative rock. An important band and had a big influence on 90s alternative rock but they were not directly responsible for it, many bands played a part in influencing alternative rock in the 90s and beyond.

    • @Coxy-b34

      There were many other bands that influenced the alternative music scene.
      Perhaps the Pixies were one of the more influential bands at the time certainly not 'directly responsible' for creating alternative rock.
      Did they influence Dinosaur Jr,Sonic Yourh,'Husker Du,Big Black,Mudhoney,The Replacements?
      Nope,because all those 'influential' bands came before Pixies.

      It’s all post punk- so direct influences to alternative would be the 70s punk bands - major players would be the smiths, the cure, joy division aka new order, all of the early emergent bands that were off shoots of direct punk like X-ray specs, sex pistol, Ramones etc.
