I have to agree with ya there! This song is just so freaking crunchy, intense and full of absolute angst....which makes it an undeniable grunge classic....hell even before their was a thing called grunge! But "hey" and of course "where is my mind" are not very far behind as their best song!
The perfect rock song. Santiago's crazed wailing over Lovering's relentless drive, Deal's husky sexiness and Black's manic storyscreaming. All done in under 3 minutes. No one can touch this.
I love it! If Livin' On A Peayer wasn't such a guilty pleasure for me I would say that this is my favourite rock song of the 80s Note: Black Flag - My War may be a little better
This is better than Smells Like Teen Spirit IMO. In fact, Smells Like Teen Spirit IS this song, only slower. I think if this came out after Smells Like Teen Spirit and the label decided to make it a single (which is all impossible, because this song is obviously a huge influence on Smells Like Teen Spirit) this song would have been a huge radiohit.
+Martin Pribble Their minimalism works so well for live shows, because then you just end up with a louder, raw-er version of the studio tracks, with nothing missing.
+Mario Cavett Well, I saw the Pixies 5 times and Nirvana twice. Pixies were pretty good once, very good twice and exceptional (to my emotions) twice. Nirvana SUCKED once (Cobain was obviously loaded and that concert they just got blown off the stage by Pearl Jam and RHCP- and I like Nirvana's records MORE than either of those bands). That night Nirvana sounded like they were playing at 3/4 speed and 1/4 effort--- they were pretty good the other time. Of course seeing a band twice doesn't make me an expert, but Nirvana didn't convert me. Neither did Jane's Addiction. Pixies were solid and Primus was always awesome- IF you already liked Primus. If you didn't, they were like- 3 times as many notes as you wanted and goofy unintelligible lyrics. To sum up, I think the Pixies basically got their due; they're not the best band ever, but they're not just a pile of feedback like some people hear them. Nirvana was a band that was great on records, and on its best days great live, but Cobain didn't care a lot of the time. Overall, they didn't deserve the adoration live that they got for their records.
For me this song sums up the whole loud-quiet business. Frank sings a few lines, then there's half a minute while he's got time to have a drink and wander around the stage a bit. He returns to the mic., screams a few more lines, the whole thing repeats a couple of times, and at the end I'm left thinking I just heard the greatest song ever.
The Rage N Quit Yeah, but OK computer was during a time when other great music had been made and was being made so it was right on time, this was made FAR before this type of great music was being made.
southrules tbh the pixies came at the wrong time and its only in the last 15 years they have become bigger and bigger. This was the footprint to grunge i hate to be genre specific but its true. Be hell yeah what a band one of the best by a country mile. Plus Kid A is way more a head of its time. OK computer is a truly great album though much like the bends
Heather Grainger Nope, all the Radiohead albums, as great as they are, were pretty much right on time. Pixies and Frank Black, WAY ahead of their time.
They were underrated then; they're still underrated now. And yet they've been covered by David Bowie, The Frames, The White Stripes, and countless other bands that aren't underrated. Pixies deserve so much more respect. The world just wasn't ready for their sound yet. And still isn't perhaps. But they move me, and that's all I need to know.
And they have and still are (whether you want to call it) “been plagiarized and copied by” or “inspired” some of the biggest names in music both, past and present. (Ex. MGK - Paper Cuts & Pixies - WiMM?) What's even more ironic are the songs these artists released/release that have used an almost identical or insanely similar Pixie chord progression and motif are the songs that go on to be their most popular and highest-charting hit. Some already being considered "classics" P.S. I'm not saying MGK is one of the biggest names in music 😂 (just wanted to make that clear)
Ive been done moves from first hear and 1st show at the year b4 this show.. (I met my doppelganger @this show and it was one of the weirsest momwnts of my life..) They made me cry when they opened w the punp up the volume UK SURF v of wave of mutilation That was one of the best shows of my life and i am grateful to have been there. Lauren D.
Man oh man- nobody can build a song like the pixies- everything drops together and has an underlying angst and ferocity that slays me, love the Kim Deal vocals on this, what a voice.
Couldn't agree with you more. Kurt Cobain's favorite song as well. When they asked him where he got the inspiration to record 'smells like teen spirit' , Kurt replied: it was just a lousy attempt to sound like Pixies' gouge away. That says it all.
This song would play in my head at some point every day for many years. Then suddenly they got back together and one of their first stops was Eugene. Still brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. God bless the Pixies.
After the second verse with the guitar chugging hard, and then the explosion of vocals....one of my favorite parts of any song ever made. I will never get enough of it. Eargasm.
La même année je pense, ils étaient à Lille, même chemise, même déco, et mon premier concert marquant ! J'avais 22 ans à l'époque et je kiffe toujours autant !
No one could hah hah hah like Kim, that rasping quality in her voice. Love the pixies, irreverent, different and didn’t follow the rules. Where has music originality gone today?
Absolutely flawless.... I actually feel privileged to be watching this. Black sounds like he's about to just shred his chords any second. What a fucking ridiculously good band they were live back then (probably still are to some extent, but idk cause I honestly haven't really seen any recent performances). Thank god someone was there recording it.
Trust me, don't go. It'll dull the luster for you. They are OK live now but ... when you stack their present day performances against this stuff from their prime ... its like its not even the same band. I saw them back then, and I've seen them recently. I've seen 100's of live acts in smallish venues where it gets real intimate. This version of them was by far the best live concert I've ever been to. They just exuded feral energy, and yet did it somehow without any on stage theatrics or antics ... nothing but the music baby.
thanks! this is around the time i saw them. best concert i ever saw. i won't even go to these reunion shows because nothing will ever match that experience i had. if you don't like the pixies, you're just not cool. period.
It's awesome how the video completely fits the music... Like it's from the same concert... I know that the song is the same, but bands always do something different live and here it fit till the end.
You can pretty turn the lights on Rock n' Roll right here. IMHO this was the apex. Everything that went before was building to this and everything since has been downhill. Literally a perfect performance that encapsulates the spontaneity and genius of expression that it's meant to embody.
To be young. I was 15 then and their music was the vanguard that ironically brought on the stuff from Seattle being that they were from Boston. Chuck's voice just makes you want ot kick ass. They were also one of the first bands that I remember started writing songs about dark matter and not flowery "november rain" or "cherry pie" or any other BS around at the time.
OMG I have been looking for this exact version for quite some time. This was the show that was used for the limited edition second disc to "Death to the Pixies," which is out of print and impossible to find!!!
True Pixies fans have no doubt: THIS is their best song.
yes but hey comes in sooo cloose
I have to agree with ya there! This song is just so freaking crunchy, intense and full of absolute angst....which makes it an undeniable grunge classic....hell even before their was a thing called grunge! But "hey" and of course "where is my mind" are not very far behind as their best song!
Hey is the best...
Ummm this is really bad comment you need to understand that every proplr like other song from them and they are still true fans
Indeed it is.
The perfect rock song. Santiago's crazed wailing over Lovering's relentless drive, Deal's husky sexiness and Black's manic storyscreaming. All done in under 3 minutes. No one can touch this.
the_katman I 100% agree.
Manic storyscreaming. Perfect description.
the_katman you're so right. It doesn't get tighter and so well crafted and beautiful. Nobody can touch this
I love it! If Livin' On A Peayer wasn't such a guilty pleasure for me I would say that this is my favourite rock song of the 80s
Note: Black Flag - My War may be a little better

This is so fucking dark and gritty... Never has a band been so amazing live
+Martin Pribble nirvana.
+Memphis Lamont nirvana cant touch the pixies
yeah they can
+Martin Pribble Their minimalism works so well for live shows, because then you just end up with a louder, raw-er version of the studio tracks, with nothing missing.
+Mario Cavett Well, I saw the Pixies 5 times and Nirvana twice. Pixies were pretty good once, very good twice and exceptional (to my emotions) twice. 1987-1992 Progressive Alternative. Some of the best music ever produced.
Dr. B A -1994
Why?
Soundgarden-Superunknown
Pearl Jam-Vitalogy
I would include 1995, maybe part of 1996. Then britpop started and all the shit.
The music Radiohead has created since 1994 is absolutely phenomenal and of course they were heavily influenced by the Pixies (stated by Thom Yorke).
slanted and enchanted
Is that what they call it now?
Holy shit, I was there that night.. to see and hear this again is…wow.. Thanx for uploading!
truly envy u
"I break the WAAAAAALS"
Gives me thrills. And tears too.
kill us alll!!!!!

Can't believe this is thirty years old
I’m now 51 and these songs still make me feel everything
Utter perfection. Reminds me so much of my college years. Kim's "la la la" is the cherry on top of the sundae.
sha la lah
Never ever ever ever has there been or will there be a band so far before it's time, just a perfect time in time.
Well...that's debatable. There is Radiohead's OK Computer, which was definitely before its time.
The Rage N Quit Yeah, but OK computer was during a time when other great music had been made and was being made so it was right on time, this was made FAR before this type of great music was being made.
southrules well I think ahead of its time certainly applies to OK Computer, if anything the album has far more relevance today
southrules tbh the pixies came at the wrong time and its only in the last 15 years they have become bigger and bigger. This was the footprint to grunge i hate to be genre specific but its true. Only some people have so special taste to love pixies and understand them to the deep bones❤️❤️
Nirvana and Weezer made whole careers off of their music.
And they have and still are (whether you want to call it) “been plagiarized and copied by” or “inspired” some of the biggest names in music both, past and present. (Ex. MGK - Paper Cuts & Pixies - WiMM?) Absolutely the best performance of this incredible song.
or at Eden 2014? I hear more feeling there
This one for me. th-cam.com/video/FiUNDeuBbi8/w-d-xo.html
1991 brixton version is better
Only these guys can rock that hard while looking like a middle school math teacher.
This song alone probably made Nirvana who they are more than any one song created. Thank you Pixies.
Yep. Kobain wrote Smells like teen spirit with this song in mind.
Yuri Suring Although I always thought the riff sounds EXACTLY like the riff in "More than a Feeling" by Boston. If you don't believe me, listen to it.
Yuri Suring But I know what you mean with the stop/start, soft/loud style implemented.
isn't teen spirit more like u-mass
I always felt that Smells Like Teen Spirit was a combo of "Gigantic" and "Where is My Mind"
I've been listening to this for years and it still feels so fresh. It still makes me tingle
The album came out exactly 2 weeks after I was born. I just saw them tonight in Montreal. It was amazing!!!
i can imagine ! the raw 1989 / 1990 was a slap for us back than ! amazing gigs
This is art.
For a 44 year old Indie kid it doesn’t get any better than this.
Cool and brutal!👌
Best version of Gouge Away I find so far. Thanks for bringing this, dude.
Best version of Gouge Away on TH-cam.
One of the very best song ever created !
Couldn't agree with you more. Kurt Cobain's favorite song as well. When they asked him where he got the inspiration to record 'smells like teen spirit' , Kurt replied: it was just a lousy attempt to sound like Pixies' gouge away. That says it all.
You 're right !
The 1:57 "La La La" sounds like a spell Kim casts, after which the music goes into a deep magic zone. Yes I'm stoned.
Gouge Away (exceptional performance) by the actual Pixies. Thanks alot.
Sounds great live. Kim's voice always sounds better live too. Dreamy.
This song would play in my head at some point every day for many years. Then suddenly they got back together and one of their first stops was Eugene. Still brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. God bless the Pixies.
i love the "thanks alot " line from kim deal at the end of such an intense song...haha!
I alway say “You’re welcome” to her. They’ve come so far, I’ve lived so long, at least I can be polite.
They were incredible..
OP is a champ for splicing the two sources and producing superior content.
"Thanks a lot " at the end lol
Just when you think you figure out what PIXIES song best live .. You hear this and and start all over ... over and over.
Thank you for synching the sound with the video... This is one of the best, if not best, live youtube videos I ever, ever enjoyed!
I don’t know how this has happened - but I’m 50 and just discovered this brilliance. Dafuk was I doing?
you were drifting in space capsule
@@IvanIvanov-us1fb … no something different. I was living mainstream:-)
After the second verse with the guitar chugging hard, and then the explosion of vocals....one of my favorite parts of any song ever made. I will never get enough of it. Eargasm.
"I" have talked about brilliance before... But this my friends is absolute "Brilliance"
I saw them on this tour- it was life changing. Awesome live performance.
La même année je pense, ils étaient à Lille, même chemise, même déco, et mon premier concert marquant ! J'avais 22 ans à l'époque et je kiffe toujours autant !
No one could hah hah hah like Kim, that rasping quality in her voice. Love the pixies, irreverent, different and didn’t follow the rules. Where has music originality gone today?
Well, I was born 32 years before this concert! And, there ya go.
sweet ..I'm old ..58 :-)
How are your 60s treating you?
I was at this concert in Utrecht. So awesome. Still the best I've ever been to. Thanks so much for uploading!!!

I never seen them in their early years but waited for 15yrs to see them and did in August of last year and was mind blowingly good 👍
It's definitely their most chilling songs. the ending gives me goosebumps.
Have been & always will be my favourite band
I was 21 back then and it was rigth on time!
I could listen to this over and over!! Thank you!
Pixies look like if the people working at your local H&R Block formed a band.
that bass omg, love it so much
thanks! this is around the time i saw them. best concert i ever saw. i won't even go to these reunion shows because nothing will ever match that experience i had. if you don't like the pixies, you're just not cool. period.
It's awesome how the video completely fits the music... Like it's from the same concert... I know that the song is the same, but bands always do something different live and here it fit till the end.
Thanx for the post Einzack. I was there and it's great to see it once again!!
Well it's my favourite Pixies song. Love the hair Black francis!
That was a cute Thank You. Usually bands kinda yell it at you.
That bass....it never stops...the same the whole way through the song. Unreal!!
Thanks for this great Job you did, einzack! Utrecht Vredenburg 1990-09-25 is memory lane for me :-)
absolute genius. brilliant performance.
thank you.
I saw them in belgium , same period ! never saw an audience so excited for a band !
thank you so much man, best performance of one of the their best songs ive ever seen
oh now i see, there were performed even more songs than there are on death to the pixies, thanks for torrent link :)
These guys were so damn good back then...
Good job on the synching! Sounds and looks just fantabulistic!
Do kids start bands anymore in their garages...?
Just found these video - they are fucking awesome. Thanks a lot, einzack.
I doubt if they ever played a better concert.... would be a miracle... just music from another planet
This is absolutely epic footage.... Thank you VERY much for sharing...
Saw this tour. Highlight of my younger years
I miss this passion ….the absolute raw explosive of emotions infecting you … good shit …
Slow and haunting...perfect. Perfect.
This seriously is a great video. thanks for uploading it.
I love when kim goes "SHALALAAAA" such a fantastic song

Just , a Wow!!! Pixin awesome and never to be repeated, heavy and raw beyond others.
2019 Gouge Away! Long live the PIXIES..
Thanks a lot!
Kim is awesome!
Amazing performance!
wow the first person to comment from 2022
Love this song so much
Now this is what you call TIGHT! .... plus amazing individual note-play from joey, and some great lyrics
this bass, this voice...this band!! best version ever
thanks for posting!!!
I like to watch this once a day.
i got a woody right now watching this...wish i was there...one of the greatest rock acts to ever hit the stage
Essa música, em especial, essa versão, é uma das coisas mais perfeitas que já criaram.
Good god, they killed it.
Absolutely fantastic
Amazingly synced... Great work!
OMG I have been looking for this exact version for quite some time. This was the show that was used for the limited edition second disc to "Death to the Pixies," which is out of print and impossible to find!!!
Wow, that is... TIGHT! I think I like it better than the album version. This is such an amazing song.
Waaaay better !!!
Feckin well done uploader ! Superb !
good god where did this footage come from. sound quality is amazing. thank you so much
Gouge away "SHA LA LA!" If you want too.....
z baw I want to cry when she sings that.
I don't want...
@rlefaive you're absolutely right. I get goosebumps from Joey's plucking. He can be fatally aggressive one second, and the next trippy and soothing
Nirvana is the greatest Pixies Cover Band of all time!
Kurt said once they were just basically trying to be a Pixies rip off
@@tedkaczynskiwasright.985 fight club? or gun club?

mmmm no
30+ years of pissy Pixies fans shitting on Nirvana. Get over it. Grow up. Aren't you 55 by now?
No one can scream like Black Francis.

I can, in my car on the highway on the way to work doing 90 with this blasting loud enough to damage my hearing.
So fuckin true
This song is just perfect. A band playing at their peak. I think this is the tour when they played the Melkweg. Great days.
Perfect just perfect makes my soul roar
This is for me the definition of music
Thanks for awesome upload!!!
great job synching, thanks!
So simple, so awesome.... i love this song!
Dark very dark.... I love it
