This album did a lot for indie rock and the “grunge” scene that would emerge in the early 90’s. Kurt Cobain even admitted to pretty much ripping off the Pixies when he wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit lol. No disrespect to Kurt. Still a legendary song

I would also say modest mouse. Especially in the vocal delivery, and hiw the music itself goes from soft to loud and soft again

It's got a lot of punk. Cobain was one of those guys who thought a lot about what he would make.

@@David-iv6jeExactly! Punk on the same level a band like Nirvana specifically would recognize- but I hate how Pixies are attributed to mainstream grunge (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots etc) with the exception of Nirvana bc Kurt REALLY got it & also Soundgarden bc they were doing their own thing around the same time tho NOTHING Pixies-inspired or drawn- but ANYWAY when folks attribute the Pixies to Grunge there is clearly NOTHING similar to the Pixies sound beside Nirvana at times. It’s pointless of me to hate on the Pixies / Grunge connotation as it’s annoyingly inextricably set in stone. But the Pixies / Nirvana link works & Pixies we’re def way more audibly inspiration to bands POST-grunge after it had been completely co-opted into WAY later. Just if anyone thinks Pixies have anything to do with AiC or Pearl Jam or Candlebox and shit🤢🤧

@@sizzlemeat Glad you get it my friend! There were a lot of hair metal bands that stopped with the hairspray and put on flannel to follow Nirvana (and Pixies before them.) But it shows in their music. As jazz great Charlie Parker said, "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." That's a statement about authenticity and commitment. Cobain got that. (No knock on the Foo Fighter and Grohl seems so likeable, but that claim he lays to punk is equally weak as the Pearl Jams of the world.)

Female vocals are Kim Deal, the bassist.
    She has leading vocals on
some songs on Surfer Rosa, their other classic album.
    Edit:
For Dead, the names are biblical references. It’s about the story of King David committing adultery with Bathsheba (aka Shebe in the song) and having her husband (Uriah) die at the frontlines of battle when she became pregnant so that he could marry her. Pretty dark.
Monkey Gone To Heaven isn’t satanic. It’s an environmental message about how man (the monkey) is destroying nature and in return nature destroys man (so the monkey goes to heaven). The underwater guy that dies in the first verse is presumably Poseidon being used as a stand-in for the ocean, in other words humanity is destroying the ocean. The 5-6-7 stuff is Hebrew numerology. Man is represented by 5, the devil by 6, and God by 7. That’s really it. Some have interpreted the increasingly harsh vocals as demanding and kind of sarcastic jabs at religious concepts, and this is perhaps supported by the track’s more naturalistic and fatalistic outlook. The monkey going to heaven is just what the monkey wants. By this interpretation, nature is all there is, and man deludes himself with an afterlife instead of accepting reality.
Also, Gouge Away is about the biblical Samson, and themes from that story are arguably present in many other songs (sexuality, shame, being chained, religion, etc).

"Un Chien Andalou" is an avant garde French film in which a woman has her eyeball cut with a straight razor(IRL)-not for the faint of heart.

If you like stuff that doesn't really sound like anything you've heard before, or even just the Pixies, I HIGHLY recommend Frank Black's solo album Teenager of the Year. Upbeat, gleefully manic, unapologetically weird, and brilliant composition & lyrics. It has enough great-from-the-first-listen songs to carry 2-3 different albums, somehow stuffed into one. Gives the impression he wrote the entire thing in a weekend while swept up in a wave of genius and inspiration.

You can mutilate anything. Any body part or even objects.
Bassist Kim Deal on female backing vocals (occasional lead vocals "Silver"). She later became the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for The Breeders.
"Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)" is a slower quieter version that appeared on the Pump Up the Volume movie soundtrack. I love that version.
This Monkey's Gone to Heaven. There was a hole in the ozone layer then. We phased out aerosol spray bottles/cans and the hole is recovering, but won't fully recover until about 2040.

Gouge Away: This song refers to the biblical story of Samson, who had his eyes gouged out by his enemies and eventually killed them all when he was chained to two pillars in their stronghold. He pulled the pillars down, bringing the building down and killing himself and his enemies.

In general, the album encompasses a series of dark thoughts, desires, aggression, and the grotesque.
It's the same feeling as a David Lynch movie to me.
Frank's harsh vocals are balanced only by Kim's lighter ones.
And the guitars are a highlight.
I've listened to the album 100's of times, and can live without "I bleed" "La La Love you" and "There goes my gun"
But my personal favs are "Hey" "Gouge Away" "Silver" "Dead" and "Wave of Mutilation" (find the UK surf version, it's really slow, but I love it more than the album version)
"Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Debaser" are also really great, but I just got tired of them eventually :(

You react to a lot of great albums. And I love your commentary! I would recommend some Bowie albums if you haven't heard them:
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - not my favorite but an essential listen
Station to Station - my personal fav; groovy, coke-induced art rock. he literally suffered from coke psychosis during this period of his life, only consuming hot chillies, milk and cocaine. he publically flirted with fascism. he doesn't even remember making this album, yet.. despite this, he has never sounded more urgent performance-wise
Low - often considered his experimental masterpiece, it's a collab album with Eno. Station to Station's sound with more bleeps and bloops and ambient soundscapes
He has many other classics obviously, but I would start with these.

The thing about Pixies songs is that so many of them are just great pop songs in that they are VERY melody-driven, have a verse, a chorus, maybe a bridge, and an original hook. It's just not necessarily obvious that they're pop songs. 'Here Comes Your Man' is the most obviously poppy track, I would submit. The thing is, that so many of the Pixies' songs are just fabulous pop songs. I remember getting to now Dolittle when I was doing a job that entailed a lot of driving. I challenge anyone to be driving alone, crank up 'Debaser' and not crack an immediate grin; the first few bars of this album are just so joyful!

Gouge Away is about the story of Samson (I'm pretty sure, like me, you'll be well aware of it... 'tied to the pillars, I'll kill us all' in temple of Dagon etc. The bits about his hair and having his eyes gouged out. I think the whole marujauna thing is about Samsom's supposed predilection to prostitutes and living through his senses etc, for which he loses his most treasured sense that makes him weak to women. That's how i read it anyway, although it is 100% a song about Samson as he's confirmed several times. In fact he takes a lot of his themes from the old testament especially.

Frank Black's economy of writing is a stellar feat, informed by pop records of the 50's and 60's. Also Pixies were greater than the sum of it's parts, each 1/4 being very good at their instrumental roles. A classic album, and my favorite band since '87 You might like their Bossanova album as it's more atmospheric and drawn out. It was my least favorite at release, but it's grown to be one of their best in my ears over the years. Cheers.

Really enjoyed this, definitely from my era though. Have you heard Nowhere by Ride? That’s worth a spin.
