    This song is full of Australian slang. "Chunder" means to vomit. ("Watch out under!" when you throw up over the balcony.) "A fried-out combie" - a Volkswagen bus with a bad engine. "Zombie" = weed. Vegemite is a yeast extract that's eaten in Australia, very salty and bitter, but good if you use just a little bit. (It's called Marmite in the UK.) The hippie trail was the journey that hippies in the thousands took across the Far East and into the Middle East in the 60's. The Land Down Under is Australia itself, because it's on the lower half of the world map. When they hop away from the camera, they're imitating kangaroos. :)

    The "Land Down Under" is Australia, where the group is from. The lyrics were written by lead singer Colin Hay, who explained in his Songfacts interview: "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the overdevelopment of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that."

    • @ronaldobrien6870
      @ronaldobrien6870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed : Colin Hay also said in an interview that the coffin at the end was meant to represent Australia itself.

  • @just4now492
    @just4now492 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    The song is a anthem for the land down under (Australia). Which is at the bottom of the globe. It’s about a Australian man that is travelling the world and meeting aussies or people who remind him of his home (Australia) wherever he goes.

    • @damienkakoschke3099
      @damienkakoschke3099 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm glad so many Aussies have already popped on here. Yes, this was Australia's unofficial anthem (mainly because our anthem is lame) at a time that Australia was finding and asserting it's identity on the world stage, politically & culturally. Also the phenomenon that apparently still occurs today, started around this time that Australian travellers were popping up in unexpected places around the world. Local people round the world started to have conversations about their night out, when half way through a mention of Australians turning up, the women being beautiful (the women glow) and the men are heavy drinkers & almost agressively cheerful & chatty (men thunder/chunder - chunder is Aussie slang for vomiting from over drinking), hence the narrator is in Bombay & Brussels, when he meets a man who's 6'4" & full of muscles & offers him a Vegemite sandwich (yeah, Vegemite is a yeast based spread that you put very thinly on bread or toast in Australia, all Australian children are brought up on it, therefore you have to be Australian not to find it utterly disgusting, so, don't feel like you have to try it). Most of us haven't heard it as anything other than in the background music to announce an advert break during the televising of a sports TV telecast for years, and the film clip even longer (in the 80's in Australia, there was a very much homemade and therefore cheap approach, very "can do" attitude to film clips, not so much yet the more polished MTV approach that was happening in America). It was very much a thing of cultural pride for many decades. Unfortunately there's a sad side to the song that came much later, in 2009. The flute tune in the song was deemed too close to the tune of the children's song "Kookaburra", something that the owners of the song hadn't noticed in the intervening decades & a copyright lawsuit ensued, which Men at Work lost. There was an understandable furor among the Australian public that the lawsuit was ridiculous & the untimely death of Men at Work flute player Greg Ham has been suggested to have been caused by the stress of the long lawsuit. - Oh, random side note re: the phenomenon of Aussies turning up in strange places around the world and being heavy drinkers, in the end credits of Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones), the man that Marion in her bar in, I think Tibet, wins a drinking match with during her introduction at the beginning of the film, he's listed as Australian Mountain climer. Liking your videos. I found it when I was watching another channel react to Gotye & Kimbra's Someone that I used to know, and after 2 verses they had no idea what the song was about, rather frustrated that the people on this channel apparently listen to songs but don't listen to the lyrics, then saw your reaction video on the youtube list on the side & of course, you got it because your great, so I've watched a few of you reaction videos, keep up the good work. May I suggest give Kate Bush, Bjork, Tori Amos & Sia a look, you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

    A bunch of years ago a comedy game show on Aussie TV mentioned that the little flute riff after the chorus was taken from the classic folk song 'Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree'.
    Immediately the rights holder to that song sued Colin Hay and wanted all of the royalties from the song. From what I remember the court awarded them a cut of the profits from the date they filed the lawsuit which got them only a couple hundred grand. But Colin Hay said he had to spend five million dollars in court defending it..

    An interesting bit of information about this song. The part in the song and video were the big guy offers him a Vegemite sandwich and it is a real sandwich in Australia. The company that owns the name Vegemite heard that the band had incorporated their sandwich into the song. They came to the band and ask if the band would want to promote the sandwich. The band surprisingly declined the offer.

    Fun Fact: the flute part was lifted from
    "Kookaburra [sits in the old gum tree]", a well-known children's song written in 1932 by Marion Sinclair
    The band didn’t have the rights - so they got sued.

    • @darkgaucho1514
      @darkgaucho1514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another fun fact... the song's original writer "did" give them verbal permission to use the Kookaburra melody in Downunder, but when she died, the rights to the tune passed to her descendants, who saw a goldmine. The descendants sued the band and won, which is why the band only had to pay royalties from the time the descendants gained ownership of the tune, and not the years prior to that.

    I have SO MANY songs I'd love for you to react to. I've been through your entire video library and I'm fairly confident that not only have you not heard these songs but, also that you have not reacted to them. Lemme compile a list lol.

    I doubt Colin Hay can still do those crazy dance moves, I loved his appearance on Scrubs performing Overkill.

    No, the land Down Under is Australia.
    He asks "do you speak-a my language?"... of course he does, it's English, just with a funny accent.
    "Gave me a Vegemite sandwich..." Vegemite is a popular spread in Australia made of yeast, it's very salty so a little is all you need. Try it on toast and butter. Like Marmite, but better.
    Those "dance moves" is them imitating kangaroos bounding away, which live in Aussie land.
    I recommend "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil, another great Australian rock band.

    Those aren't dance moves, they are kangaroo hops.

    India, i love you. You do such good input and comments on different musik. I would love to hear your input on Bob Marley and The Wailers. Often when a song is good, you need to "wait for it". Then it can floor you. Also a very good group is Boney M. Tragic history, althoug i've always loved the ladys in this group. If you find them, look at the apperance of the females. When in sweden, they had a good time, Germany not so good. Please try to give input on one of this. Lots of love and hug your kids as well. HAPPY DAYS

    If you like Australian 80's bands you may like Midnight Oil. They were most popular for the song that goes "How can you dance while the Earth is turning, how can you sleep while the beds are burning" My favorite is the song by them called "Blue Sky Mine"

    Men At Work were sued by the writer of Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree,written by Marion Sinclair in 1934,the flute section sounds very much the same.
