      Thanks for the detailed teaching here. I have a much more clear concept now! As a beginner, you have taught me a lot Warren. I always don't understand why O here a raised now in the minor scale. Now I know it is the harmonic one.
      I have learnt the minor chord progression now. Before then, I just know the major one. Thanks so much!!

    Thanks man very helpful and helped me to solve some confusion about minors.
    If I understood correctly then if you transpose from major to minor you completely change the vibe of the progression right?
    to the point some degrees combos wouldn't sound good at all in minor.
    That got me confused, after trying to transpose to natural minor, which I did correctly but its felt off, especially when 2 diminished was part of it
    Happy to find your channel - Subbed!

    So in the natural minor scale the 5 chord is minor (e g b)
    whereas in the harmonic minor the 5 chord is major (e g# b)
    got to wrap my brain around that.

  • @drzirkle

    This is what helps me to keep these straight. Almost always:
    (Upper Case = Major Chord, and Lower Case = Minor Chord.)
    I and IV (Major Key) or i and iv (Minor Key) match in quality.
    iii and vi (Major Key) or III and VI (Minor Key) are the opposite quality of the tonic.
    V is always Major/Dominant 7.
    Diminished chords have 3 options: dim triad/half dim 7th/or fully dim 7th. These can be freely chosen by the player/composer for any place that a dim. chord could go. (Usually vii° (on Ti in major or minor key) or ii° (in a minor key)).
    I'm a "Classical" theory teacher and I'm REALLY learning a lot from seeing how you process all of this information differently. I've been trying to figure out how popular musicians use theory topics for ages. These lessons are perfect. Thanks very much!

    And this chord progression(4516, 4516, 4561, 451) still on the same key c sounds like the song but different from yours so if there's any way you pick chord or rules in choosing chord like you pointed out in this video I'll like to know thanks very much Warren.

    Outstanding lesson. Thanks a lot!
    For me the last progression has to be considered in C major ending in A minor simply because the harmony gravitates (in an aural and emotional way) toward C major, and A minor in the end. Really strong and immediate feeling for that.

  • @0biwan7
    @0biwan7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    LOL about 15 minutes into this video I was thinking "Is El-shaddai in d minor or c major?" the A with a C# bass chord and the B-flat chord suggest d harmonic minor. but the G chord suggests C major. and the E chord doesnt belong in either. and then one minute later you played it!

    I have a question. So when you play a song using a progression (the verse of a song), how do you find out what progression a song is using (in the chorus) if it sounds different from verse to chorus? Will it change and why would it change if does?. This will help a lot. Thanks!

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remember music is art, there no specific reason why the chorus might have different chords or tonality, it’s just art and what sounds good. You use your ear and understanding of theory to figure the chords just the same.

      @@PianoLessonwithWarren for example: the song oceans (hillsong) is in the key of Em. The progression that they do in the verse is 1-3-7-6 (I’m using natural minors scale). In the chorus the first chord changes to a C mayor chord and the chords go C, G, D in the chorus. How is this possible or why is this? So let’s just say i was at a church to help play piano and the band started to play the ocean song and I had never played the song before, so I ask what key is it in and they say Em…then let’s just assume that they say the progression we are using is 1-3-7-6. So then I’m like cool got it. Then comes the chorus which is not 1-3-7-6 anymore obviously bc it’s starts with the Chord C and so on like I explained on top. How do I figure this out in songs that do that? Thanks a lot man, you are awesome for taking time to teach me something, it will go a long way!
