This is crazy, i play those chords everyday with out even knowing they are called chromatic mediants😂, i need to learn theory! Thanks alot Warren! now I can play them more with some knowledge about what am playing
I’m mostly self-taught and I totally agree! I’ve been playing for 20 years, and I realize that a lot of what Warren has taught (as well as others) I’ve been doing for years, but I didn’t know the theory behind it.
I agree 100%! This is the best explanation of chromatic mediants on the net! He took it from classical to neo soul! Warren has a very wide background and understanding of music.
Thanx for your videos Warren!! The exemple on "amazing grace" is on point, i'm gonna do it as an exercice to practice all tones. Humbly, Ravel and Debussy are "impressionism music" (end of 19th century to 20th) and Tchaikovsky "romantism" as you said, at least it's what we learn in France. Much love, thanx for sharing knowledge !
I don’t understand how you went from the [Eb maj7 13 chord] to the [Bb maj7 13 chord] to the [Db maj7 13 chord] back to the [C major7 13 chord] in the Neo Soul chord progression. Could you explain how this works?
@@klevens5496 Neo Soul music isn’t based on tonality or traditional rule of harmony, which is why it’s considered vibe music. You can literally combine chords of any quality, from any tonality. It’s like impressionist music
Question for ya, please. For the chord of Cmaj, I go down two steps in the C major diatonic scale and get A. So, therefore, Amaj is a chromatic mediant chord to Cmaj. How then does Ab get to become also a chromatic mediant chord? Same idea with going up two steps to E makes the chord of E but also Eb. How does that work? What is the 'rule' there? PS, thanks and so glad I ran across this video. I've been studying modulations in general and have spent a good bit of time on specifically the Chromatic Mediant modulation. I am still struggling and waiting for that light bulb to come on. Thanks again!!!
These are the criteria for chromatic mediant 1. Both root chords are separated either by a major third or minor third. 2. Both chords shares at lease one chord tone.
Loud Production Gang give me a time stamp for the exact section of the video you’re referring to and I’ll check it out and respond. At the moment I don’t quite understand the question without know where you’re referring to in the video.
Loud Production Gang yes the home chord would be C, but Neo Soul doesn’t follow traditional rule of harmony and key. However if you want to create a relation, the Eb is the chromatic median for C, Bb is the b7 ( also the 5 of Eb) the Db is the b7 of Eb ( also the chromatic mediant for Bb). So overall, I’m just moving between the key of C to the key key of Eb.
I'm more an bassist/guitarist, not that good at keys/piano, but man - this video opened my mind! Thank you so much. Also that second keyboard visualisation and highlighting does a fantastic job to understand what you are doing! You have a new subscriber!
Hi Warren! Nice video! I learned the chromatic mediants that have no common tones to the original key as doubly chromatic mediants. Have you ever heard this?
Omg! Warren you just transformed my musicality and life experience exponentially! Now I have a deeper understanding of opera, classical gospel and neo soul! You da Man! I'll have to send you an Edmonton Alberta, sunrise or sunset. Where do I send the photos?
Hm, film composer Junkie XL enlisted examples of going Em → E and Em → Ebm as using mediant relations. And I wanted to ask what does term non-diatonic chords in this lesson, or maybe there's a lesson about that too? Quick search lead me to chromatic/diatonic scales, but that's probably a bit different topic. Great lesson btw, thank you :) You're amazing.
Alexey Filippenko non-diatonic chords are chord not belonging to the key. Example: if you’re playing in the key of C, Eb Major would be a non-diatonic Chord

Excellent explanation of a deep subject. Some of this was over my head (okay, half of it was over my head) but I think with some practice and several views of this tutorial I'll have an understanding of key modulations that I've sought for a long time.
This lesson was super helpful! I knew roughly "how" to use chromatic mediants, but this taught why it works, which better teaches how to apply the use. Thanks!
Nice vid, brother ❤ So these chr mediants are related by 3rds to a tonic, like: C A Eb C. That’s clear.. But what if I have: C A C# E C ?? Here C# is not from C, but it’s still related by 3rds to the neighbouring chords. So, is that C# still considered as chr mediant or what?? And Here’s an opposite ex: C F Ab G C. Here Ab is the only chord related by a 3rd to a tonic. So is this “insertion” still a chr mediant in theory?? And what if I use chords that have relationship of 3ds to their neighbours but not to a tonic: C Dm F# Dm B. Are they chr mediants still?? Can somebody clarify this sh.. Thnx. Cheers
In the key of C, E minor is the mediant and A minor the Submediant. However note that the term “Mediant” is used to describe the relationship between two chords. General when the chords are separated by a major or minor 3rd.
Really well explained. Made much more sense than there other videos on TH-cam about chromatic mediants. You are a fantastic teacher the way you describe things. I appreciate your skill.
