Thank you for this good analysis. This kind of deep diving into voices and music helps me to hear more nuances in my favorite songs. This way they are becoming better!
Charlie thank you for doing this! I absolutely love this vocal performance. I am completely untrained in music, but I have enjoyed good music for my whole life. This performance is among my favorites. Despite my ignorance, I also love hearing musicians nerd out about great performances. I've been looking forward to hearing a vocal expert and symphonic metal lover like you nerd out about this. Some day I hope you get to interview Simone.
Thank you! Would be a pleasure. I know Elizabeth has, and I love her perspective, but it would be great to get this channel to a point where I can have those conversations. Thank you so much :) at the end of the day I do this because it makes me happy to share
Charlie!! It was really interesting to hear the information on choir music and singing. Also, thanks for your input on my comment in the Twitch chat. I always enjoy hearing you talk about singing technique; I learn a lot!😅
Love the analysis. This song touches the heart and mind. A song you heard at the Symphonic Synergy concert was Sirens (of Blood and Water). I recommend analyzing the combination of Simone, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur as a trio in the music video.
Please continue the nerd analysis of this masterpiece that’s one of my top favorite pieces. Want to know everything about it and even cut in pieces here I still get goosebumps. I love all versions of this song, but this one gets under my skin thoroughly. Thank you Charlie for your worthy review ❤
Thx for analysis video, very interesting! A lot new info for me about a capella choral music. And about doing vocal cracks on purpose - Sia Furler immediately comes to mind. But i really love it, when it's done unintentionally live.
It's an interesting phenomenon across multiple genres, but universally, it's like I said, it's an act of pure expression. You get it in pop, opera, rock, symphonic metal ;) etc.
This choir has been working with Epica for many years, recording their albums. to be honest, not my favorite version of this song 😁 I love the studio version, it has a great mix and sound and I really love the live version with Apocalyptica live afas 2023, just a magical performance. But I understand that you are more interested in analyzing the voices. I am interested in your analysis of her performance on the song "Rise again" live in London, it seems to me that this is Simone's best vocal performance in the last few years and there is something to analyze there, considering they literally had one short rehearsal of this song in the dressing room before the concert
Totally understandable! I'd love to hear that version though. I like to focus on talking about the voices here, but who doesn't just love great music for great music's sake?
Oh my goodness!!! I'm at 2:24, and my whole body is vibrating and shaking, even after pausing. I'm still hearing the harmonics, and they're still traveling through me! Talk about awesome!!! SATB -- Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass. Before RA about broke me in half and I couldn't straighten up for over 12 years, I sang (from the age of two onward) solo and in choirs. By the time I was in my teens, I could soar through nearly six octaves, effortlessly. Then (for all of those years before getting both hip joints replaced in 2017) I could only sing bass. So I did that, because I cannot not sing. I just can't! It's all I ever really wanted to do. I've also played cornet/trumpet, piano, organ, accordion, acoustic guitar, recorders, penny whistles, and the willow whistles my dad used to make for us when we were little. I'm now back up to just over five octaves, and working on the higher notes and regaining fluidity. This song is so wonderful! You explained the differences in the tonal layering so well! "... Fighting in the darkness ..." I fell apart again! Wow!!! I'll take the nerd stuff any day! Go for it! 😀 At 13:02 (ish), I noticed her stance, and greatly approved. 😁🥰 The "crack" hit me hard. I totally agree about knowing when the singer is "feeling it." I had never heard this song before, but believe me, I will watch more of their stuff! I will also go check out "Roomful of Teeth." That sounds really exciting! Thank you very much for this wonderful reaction!!! I enjoyed and appreciated greatly! 🔥😲🤩
Thx Charlie, great reaction. FYI: Simone and Floor are bffs and when studying at the rock academy, they were roomies. Pleas also react to stabat mater dolorosa, from Epica and Floor, with a full orchestra and choir. You’ll be surprised. Have fun 😂😂
The singer by Epica Simone is one of the best sopranos in Metall She start her singing by Epica with 17years now she is 39years and one of the best sopranos in Metall 🤘 🤘 🤘 the singer by Nightwish Floor is her best frend in Metall is Simone Floors liddel Sister
with a lot of love (it also took me a while to realize that I was pronouncing her name wrong and you are not doing a bad job really) and without any intention to be mean or disrespectful, it's SimonE, with the stress in the O and a bit in the E. I will let her explain it herself in this video. PS just discovered your channel and subscribed!
A good choir can make a lot of sound. It might be suspended mics too? I feel like you couldn't get such a well blended sound with lavs, but I'm no tech expert
@@CharlieCalottaReacts i agree lavs normally wont sound that nice, but they all have a chain around there neck with something hanging around the chest area (or a little lower even). witch would make sense since they are all to far away from any mic. with drums playing etc. DPA lavs can sound as good as a regular condenser. problem often is clothing or they are to close to the neck area, making a nasty sound due to comb filtering. my guess is there mics are (lavs) hanging rather freely/lower then usual as you would do in movies or tv, witch make them sound better but with less direct sounds but im sure they sing loud enough to make up for it, lets not forget they blend 16 of them and use quite some reverb :) makes up for allot
This is a great point. I’m gonna have to look deeply and watch like 10 hours of reviews for the world’s best lavs 🤣 no but seriously their circular configuration also might have something to play into its effectiveness. Vocal ensembles are always better that way.
There is also a fantastic performance of this song by Epica with the marvelous strings of Apocalyptica
Yeah! I did a reaction to the studio recording but that would be sweet too!
@@CharlieCalottaReacts the way the song 'erupts' at the end with Apocalyptica is out of this world.
Ooohhh maybe a tryptic comparison then
@@CharlieCalottaReacts just do it 🤘😀
I agree, though I do also think that this version is very under appreciated

That’s a great call, I do have the footage ready to analyze now, so expect it :) thanks for the recommendation
Love your videos! I have no knowledge of music, but it's fascinating to see the passion and feelings this singers give to you. I feel it aswell 😢❤😊

great reaction,so much great songs from epica, you might like "Crimson Bow and Arrow"
Can’t wait to check it out!
I'm still adjusting to the "new you". But I'm here for it... love you man. Also, fuckin' Rivers by Epica? Just destroy me completely I love this song.
Hey I appreciate that a lot. We’re doing a reaction stream on Friday of all the New Nightwish. Viewer requests too! Touch of the old vibe ha
just amazing

I knew they studied together but not that they were ROOMIES. That’s really cool. I think I did react to this earlier in the catalogue
🎉🎉🎉
Whoever wrote, arranged and composed this is a genius. I assume it was Coen but don't know for sure.
You talking about the a capella group at the end reminded me of Clamavi de Profundis. It would be awesome if you checked out their Song of Durin.
Ooooh that’s a great call. Thanks!
