In a broad sense, you can call any old music "classical", which is what most people do. But if you want to be more precise, you need to know that the Classical period was (roughly) from 1750 to 1820, preceded by Baroque period and followed by Romantic period. However, exact years for these periods are not set in stone and some dates can overlap. That's why I said roughly.

Simone is a Siren straight from the pages of mythology and Odin himself would see Floor as a fine Valkyrie. There is a combination of strength and sweetness in both Floor and Simone's voices that causes even this ancient, sorrowful hymn to elicit a joyful response. And Elizabeth, well, joy is what she does!

@@rogeriopenna9014 oh I dunno, Dutch finish Nordic roots of a lot of metal music. Even Gothic style seems to be closer to Germanic / proto Norse than it does to greco roman.

This. This is why I'm here with Elizabeth, above all others. I want to her to dissect this gorgeous, haunting slice of the Sacred. I'm used to a soprano and either a mezzo or an alto taking the roles. Never heard Simone & Floor caress it before. This should be heavenly and instructive.
You'e going to watch a Disney/unicorn princess analyze a 13th century christian hymn that is being sung by a siren and a valkyrie. How could it not be awesome?!
I don't know if anybody's explained the full backstory here but it's really interesting.
So, Simone Simons was inspired to study classical singing after listening to Tarja Turunen on Nightwish's Oceanborn. At the same time, she was dating Mark Jansen, who was guitarist and growler in After Forever, Floor's first band. He quit AF in 2002 and started Epica with Simone (they broke up at some point after that but kept the band together), and then by the time this performance was recorded, Floor had started ReVamp and then taken over as Nightwish's lead vocalist.
Oh, and Simone was in a long-term relationship with Oliver Palotai of Kamelot and was pregnant with their first child when this performance was filmed (you can just see her baby bump in some of the shots). They have since married.
THis was recorded in March 2013 so 2 months before the legendary Nightwish Wacken 2013 concert.
Yup both of them were inspired by Tarja Turunen to train in classical singing
Epica is also inspired after one of Kamelot's albums
Simone was 15 weeks pregnant during this song. And as you know, Simone and Floor know each other very well and have been singing together a lot. Sadly for me as a Dutchie, they do not live in the Netherlands anymore. Simone lives in Germany and Floor in Sweden.

Ik wist van Floor vanaf After Forever en toen hield niemand echt van het gezang van haar. Wel het band zie je, maar dat zingen neeee zeg. Het gegil van dat meid, gossiemijnie astublieft niet. Het was echt een hilariteit toen, want iedereen hield van AC/DC en Guns und Roses. De fans onder wie mannen, houden echt van deze blerrende mannen maar wilden niks te maken hebben met dit zingende godin. En nu plotseling is Floor weer Nederlands icoon geworden. What is, in my mind, even more incredible than the performance itself is the reaction of the fans to this.
I mean, this is a metal concert and then they play something like this - and the fans love it.
Imagine a band in _any_ other genre doing something similar during one of their concerts and their fan's reaction...
Honestly, I can hardly imagine that this kind of appreciation is unique to metal. I'm no fan of pop, but I've seen plenty of instances where a pop oriented band/artist did a rock song or something else outside of their comfort zone and it being hugely appreciated.
That's because metal is the most classical-influenced musical genre, and normally metal audiences are the most open to other musical influences. There are probably more metal sub-genres than there are musical genres, with more diversity between them than diversity between whole genres. Metal opens your mind like no other music.
@@francescosirotti8178 there is definitely a lot of variety and acceptance within it, but I have a problem with the "like no other music" part in your comment. That kind of contradicts the entire point of metal being inclusive 😅

If group A likes things a, b, c, all the way to x, y and z and group B likes only things d, e and f, how is stating that group A is more inclusive than group B a contradiction in itself?
Now, if group A would shut out anything that group B likes, you would have a point, but if A _does_ accept more variants of music than group B, then _by definition_ A is more diverse/inclusive in their acceptance of music than B and stating that in no way diminishes A's diversity.

As someone who played brass for seven years, I like to imagine how cool it would be to be a classical musician in an orchestra and perform with a heavy metal band in front of a wild crowd lol
Classical singers seem to be able to just slay the metal genre as well I think a lot of people don't realize just how well trained some of these metal singers are....amazingly talented !! Its almost like the ying and yang of music!!
you really should ask Floor for an interview on your channel. would love to see you two talk about vocal technique, the close link between metal and classical music, nightwish, her side projects and anything that comes to your mind. go for it!

I would love to see a reaction to that! It was a great cover, and Simone did a lot of different things with her voice that we don't often hear in Epica like character voices and more usage of her lower register. Her husband, Oliver, has a surprisingly versatile voice as well.

In what other genre of modern music, would they stop the show, take a few minutes to perform a work from the 1700s. This is what I admire about the Metal genre.
I still think the most amazing thing about this performance is that it took place in the middle of a Heavy Metal concert

Love it! did not know Floor and Simone did a version of this song. Heard for the first time about Stabat Mater in a quiz when Astrid Stockman and Lieven Scheire did a wager if Lieven won "De slimste mens ter wereld" he and Astrid would learn and record the Stabat Mater. So he won and they did a wonderfull and funny job
As always, your observations are spot on. The composer lived in the early 1700s so Bel Canto was becoming a thing. The matching vibratos was very noticeable and beautiful. The composers use of dissonance and resolution was executed quite well and always on pitch. The scooping, you mentioned was noticeable at the beginning and marred the performance, bit not as noticeable later on. All in all, beautiful.
I think the scooping is deliberate, to lengthen notes and sound dramatic.
These two are not doing classical for a reason, they don't like the restrictions. It's not like they don't have the skills, they do.
They are wealthy beyond belief because of their talent. They made wise career decisions.

Hold on Liz! These two probably sound a whole better singing the old music than the old ones would sound singing metal! I could listen to these two singing this all day!!
I love that their different, almost contrasting singing styles brought out the musical tension the composer must have felt when he wrote this piece, the tension he felt knowing both sides of life, the beauty of living and the sorrow of death.
This presentation reminds me a little of how Sharon den Adel and Anekke van Giersbergen did their famous version of "Somewhere".
Elizabeth will obviously love this one. I can't wait.
Next to metal/rock I absolutely adore the baroque period where rock stars of the period like the castrato Farinelli wowed the audiences, composers like Handel, Bach, Mozart, Purcell to name a few packed halls just like today. My wish is to see Handels Theodora performed next being lovebites and Jinjer!! As for this performance/reaction and no matter who sings this ( Julia Lezhneva ( who is my fav Baroque singer) along Phillippe Jaroussky) makes ones eyes water!! Thanks for your reaction 😎🤟

It might interest you to know these two ladies were both taught by the same vocal coach early in their career. A lady called Amanda Someville. She also appears as backing vocals on a lot of epica's earlier albums. And even stepped in as lead singer for epica on tour for a while when Simone was unwell
I listen to Epica since ever, basically, when they started. And, it's amazing how good Simone became. I mean, it's always amazing to see how a singer grows. I also find that she has such a beautiful voice color. When you hear her, you always know it's her.
Someone compared her as a siren, I would compare her more like a Nymphe (personification of nature, js). A weightless creature that is in tune with the music, fine and gracious.
This gives me chills every time i hear this. First of all it is a beautiful piece of classic music it self, and hear tose two ladies singing it, is stunning. So now i'll have to search and find it sung by classic singers. When you described the background of this, it made sense. I have wondered if it was in that direction it was written. It made me in a way think of Mozart and his deathmass,wichalsoisabeatuifulpieceofmusic. .

Psst. Hey. Hey, you! Yeah, you. Diana Ankudinova's newest performance just dropped this weekend. She covers Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love. And it's possibly the first time I've ever enjoyed a cover of that song. It's on a new singing competition on the HTB (NTV) network with a new set of performances every weekend. The ten singers are also the judges. No buttons or anything, just a classic point system. Diana won the day, of course. Good thing they had her perform last. I would dread having to follow that act. Since it's on the HTB network you'll have to do that clever border crop using a glass-like transparency/blur effect along the edges to keep the algo away.
On this Epic performance; I think every song I've watched from this particular set was amazing. The live orchestra/choir really made the difference.

Reading the comments, ive realized most people dont really know metal lovers (specially those of us who love symphonic metal) ADORE classical music because it is the source of it all. See, a great part of metal revolves around reaching that musical virtuoso status, which is where the epic guitar solos come from, i.e.
So, yes, metal loves ADORE classical music and music as an ART, not as an industry (i.e. pop, reggaeton, latin pop, etc).

This is one of my absolute favorite classical pieces; heard it first probably 40 years ago as the orchestra my father played in performed it. Very brave of the two ladies to perform it, because it's not easy (and you can hear Simone has some small issues with the looooong lines), and both are sopranos. My favorite recording of this is the one by Emma Kirkby and James Bowman, one that can drive me to tears when I'm not in the right mood, but this is pretty special too
She was pregnant during this performance. Probably affected her ability to sing longer lines.

Isn't it interesting how, when showcased on the classical stage, the voices of the symphonic metal genre rise above the 'popular music' designation? Such beautiful voices they are...
Interesting for sure, but I feel like you're suggesting it should be surprising too, which it really isn't. Symphonic metal is classical with modern instrumentation. Pop is algorithmically proven to sell well. Very different musical approaches.
@@Merble Great point - the thing is, if you listen to classically trained singers do this piece, there is a certain rigidity in their performances that our metal performers lack.
After listening to several classical productions of this piece, the technical precision that classically trained singers have tends to overshadow some of this composer's message.
That is, the tension and emotion is easier to feel in Epica's video...

I was called upon to play lead violin for this way back in music school, as an accompaniment as it was an exam piece for singers.
I think at best they were ok, and certainly none even remotely this good. As a result I got a bit sick of it back then, but time heals that and now I love it as I'm mentally there with the violin, listening to these two lovely ladies wring the emotion from every note.
I think they chose their parts wisely, as Simone's voice has a brighter timbre than Floor's so although she can undoubtedly reach the notes for the alto part, it would lack some of the expansiveness of Floor's voice in that range, while that very brightness is more apparent in the higher range and gives the contrast between their voices.
I believe the earliest known copy is from a 13th century gradual in the archives of a Dominican nunnery in Bologna, which has cast doubt on its attribution to the Franciscan Jacopone Da Todi OFM in favour of Pope Innocent III, as to have been copied into a gradual in a nunnery of a different order shows it was probably in regular use before Jacopone was writing much of anything. So more likely 12th century than 13th. That was a relatively recent discovery though.

I love Simone's voice. I love the darker, alto soprano sound. Not taking anything away from Floor, she's a once in a lifetime talent but I've always preferred Simone. Sancta Terra and Unleashed are prime examples.

Omg I just thought of something! You should check out Dead Can Dance! They have such a unique, world music sound that is just so cool, plus they have both a male and female vocalist.

Pergolese's Stabat Mater is an absolute classical favourite of mine too (aswell as Orffe's Carmina Burana). My music tastes range from early classical all the way through to metal, rock, reggae, swing, edm, trance, drum n bass, folk, Americana, Dark Country, murder ballads (check out The Heavy Horses "Murder Ballads and other love songs"), a capella.... It's fairly well varied. Lol.

I have about 10 classical renditions of Stabat Mater.
This is superb,
if its missing anything, it is the intimacy allowed by venue.
Elizabeth, could you touch on what it is like for a soprano to sing low with power. Floor has said in interviews that to sing high was always a goal of hers, but Tuomas challenged her to sing low as well in the "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" album. She has since developed the low end of her range (not including her growls) so that she can project more like an alto. During "My Walden" at Wembley, Floor momentarily dipped down low and sounded like a baritone, then cheekily smiled to the crowd as if to say, "Bet you didn't know I could do that!"

Finally, I was so interested in your knowledgeable opinion of this performance. Next to this beautiful piece and the epic performance by Floor and Simone I've always been impressed that they had the guts to do this midway a full blown metal concert. And the public just loved it.
One of my favorite piece of music. Love Pergolesi. I also really like versions sung by men like Philippe Jaroussky or Samuel Mariño and Filippo Mineccia
12:40 about Floor pumping more sound into the lower notes: ofcourse singing with a microphone is an advantage here. You can see Simone holding the mic further from her mouth than Floor does, so Floor doesn't have to compensate for all of the volume difference with her own voice.
These are 2 of my favorite female metal singers together. I find that it seem to me that European musician have classical roots and they can go in there performance in more than one area of music at any time , something that is lacking in American musicians. thank you to the host to let me hear your views and help me learn to really hear the music .

I’ve heard Epica perform this song before, on their 2009 live album ‘The Classical Conspiracy’, but they didn’t have Floor for that performance. Lots of classical songs on that album. Pity that I literally slept through the live chat… I work nights.
