- Mike Patey describes how he adds Kevlar to his bush plane Scrappy. Mike uses not only carbon fiber on the fuselage and tail, but he is now adding Kevlar to the horizontal stabilizer to increase strength and prevent rocks from damaging the design.

When we got fron him that he was going crazy on the Carbonfiber i didn't expect this to become borderline morbid.

Logically, I watch your channel because I am a pilot, but your motivation encourages me every time and reminds me that I enjoy being a software developer as much as you enjoy building your plane.
Sure I would love to have a man cave hangar like you and build planes every day, but at least I fly in my spare time! So back to work.
Mike, I'm a master auto tech/shop foreman plus I build race cars, engine, wiring, etc etc. You have a great eye for detail and think way ahead of your work. Glad to see someone like me in a lot of ways. Keep up the great work..

I miss Draco so much, I never got to see it in person but it was a seriously amazing piece of engineering. I can't wait to see Scrappy finished. Love your excitement in what you do mate, it is inspiring to watch you work.
OK this is coming from a composites Engineer...I've been working with this stuff my entire life, and have some papers (certs and diplomas) saying I know the FRP world. I say this so you will understand the magnitude of my next statement. This man knows his stuff! I mean...REALLY knows what he is doing! There are some things that I would do different, but they are purely judgment calls, different ways of doing things.
I used to build RV sailplane models from vacuum bagged carbon, glass and Kevlar. I experienced this very phenomenon; Raw Kevlar cloth could not be torn and could only be cut with special scissors. However, once it was laid up with resin it could break and tear like glass. In fact, after a crash, you could take a piece of epoxy-impregnated Kevlar which had begun to tear and then continue tearing it with your bare hands.
I’m inclined to think that the carbon and steel will do the job of carrying aerodynamic loads and preventing flutter quite nicely, but the Kevlar will add some thickness and some resin and not much else. Laying up the carbon on a 45 degree bias would help immensely with torsional flexing, and I assume Mike did this. This is an amazing plane, and so overbuilt that I see little risk in the layup schedule, even if the strength to weight doesn’t quite work out as intended.
Just discussion points-not criticism. Mike has advanced the art and technology of home building more than any human in a very long time, and he he is rightfully assuming his place alongside Burt Rutan and Dick Van Grunsvan.

Hi I started flying when I was 18 years old I got my commercial licence (never used it much) now 72 I haven't pilot a plane since 1987 but always loved it. Because of high blood pressure and some other problems if I fly again it will be ultra light.
You and your brother have sparked my interest in aviation as you have done with many of us old farts just keep up the good work and inspire the youth. I don't have the budget on a pension to fly much again but I love you videos keep up the inspirational work and I hope you get your work of love flying soon ...PS Pray it will be VIRUS FREE
Scrappy as is an appropriate name for this Cub but not because of its make up of used parts but because of the character and attitude that it and it's owner exude. Neat airplane!

It’s 4:30 in the morning and I’m watching these build videos and feel so inspired by Mike . This is what so many kids need to see is his pride and dedication to his work followed up by his “BACK TO WORK”. I will have a back to work tshirt next week.
Back when I was in the Navy, I was an Aviation Structural Mechanic and I spent my entire time in the Navy painting aircraft ( S3 Vikings). We would have to sand around panels that were removed for inspections, then seal and paint the panels when the inspections were completed. On different panels we would have to feather the layers of paint. I remember counting one time and this one aircraft had 57 layers of primer and paint. I can only imagine how much that weighed. The book called for one primer coat and two top coats.... But the skippers had to have their birds pretty. A lot of them ended up going to NARF to get completely stripped. That's another interesting process....

i work at a mechanic shop and im the only AV nerd. when my co worker asked me about making a part from carbon for his project car i showed him the building of the dash panel and he was blown away. im sure you will have a new subscriber today. Also im a fan of the newer shorter videos its alot more in line with the format you see on youtube!

This is why kayaks are made of a combination of kevlar and carbon fibre, which is interwoven into the sheet, as opposed to separate layers, like Mike is using. And it's for the impact resistance, a sharp rock etc won't crack the boat.

I've never had a plane, watching your videos i sometimes have to rewind to play back to understand exactly what your trying to build. Your a genius at what you do. Thanks to you and the flying cowboys for sharing hours and hours of great amazing videos!
One of my favorite things about Kevlar is its abrasion resistance. I've used it for years on the wheel well's of dragsters and race cars. So when you blow a tire its less likely to go through the fiberglass.

There is so much carbon on this plane you should paint only some stripes or accents and then just clear the whole thing so show off the beautiful fiber
Keith Carlton and in the heat of Utah it melts like chocolate? If he would build everything in prepreg and postcure it then maybe but still.. a black plane will heat up like hell!
RV-8tor your correct 👍🤠 maybe not like chocolate 😂 but true. so in the areas like horizontal and others I need to keep the strength I will paint those areas with a light color. Yet, some portions of the tail section that holds its structure from the frame below, I will go ahead and show off some clear UV blocked carbon fiber and even as we know it does soften it’s still magnitude stronger than fabric. So In some areas that fabric is enough I’ll show off some clear carbon fiber just because 🤷♂️👍 🤠
@@Spinner1987CH I haven't seen that he's laying up CF over foam cores. I'm no expert in this kind of thing, but I believe the insulation value causes havoc as heat builds. He doesn't have that factor to contend with.
As an experiment try touching the black paint of a vehicle when its sitting in the scorching sun...then try touching the polished chrome trim. The black paint will be hot, but the chrome trim will make our fingers smoke.
Paul Slevinsky i know what you want to say but actually I was a structural test engineer for a aircraft project (Solarimpulse) which was entirely built out of CF and we did a lot of testing. The result was that we still needed to cover the top surfaces to reduce the impact of the heat (the hotter it gets the weaker the structure becomes)..

G’day Mike team & Co, there are lots of comments re heat effects on your chocolate bear cub.
There is a product made of super fine powdered ceramic that reflects heat. It can be added to all sorts of paint.
Mostly used for painting/ insulating roofs and works a treat, for hot and cold.
Love the Kevlar bulletproof strength, and keeping us all up to date with the informative vlogs.

A few propeller blade models made by Hartzell are made structural foam, Kevlar and then pre-preg E glass.

Yeah... I been suggesting it due to the finger of God wash on top of debris. Long shelf designing along with wedged plywood style skin toughness. To only have keyboard warring about weight and unnecessary. So glad Mike is about monster mechanics and designs. Murica!

Hello Mike. Glad you thought of Kevlar to this Project. I like to tell you about this material that could save you some time. Carbon Fiber Made with Kevlar Blue Fabric Plain Weave a Company sell it on EBay.Please look at it because you could clear coat it then done.They have Red for you. Don’t yell but we RC Sailplanes people don’t like black Carbon because of the heat on the Epoxy/Carbon. We try to paint them a color. But your a engineer and a awesome pilot and builder. Please keep the plane video coming. My last Comment to you. I hate to piss you off. God Bless. Just trying to help.

I fully understand the Kevlar idea. The leading edges of horizontal stabilizers get banged up something fierce when doing a lot of off airport work.
This plane is going to be the new bench mark in Cubs.Unique & unbelievable.
That light kevlar laminated on a flat caul plate and wrapped over an EPP foam wing and bonded with 3M77 will make an indestructible foam wing. Tough kevlar sheet over a flexible foam with a contact adhesive made wings on some research drones survive 90 mph crashes. Based on actual experience!

Thanks for making the videos and sharing your experiences. I am in the process of two airplane builds and information and learning on composites and carbon fiber is not easily found on the Internet. symetrical airfoil on the tail is used in the RC world for years (probably in general aviation too) looking great cant wait on the end result of the whole plane!!! Greatings from the Netherlands!

It's a little late now but you could have gone with one of the NACA 4 digit symmetric airfoils and gotten some cleaner (less drag) airflow over the horizontal and would still not have to worry about it being biased up or down. It's great to see all the progress you've been making on scrappy lately, keep up the good work!
Sometimes a caulk board drawing is much more informative than a thousand works and arm movements
